October 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week! This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” represents the final year of our three-year effort to educate the public about basic but essential elements of smoke alarm safety. Why focus on smoke alarms three years in a row? Because NFPA’s survey data shows that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire. For example, only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced. As a result of those and related findings, we’re addressing smoke alarm replacement this year with a focus on these key messages: Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. Make sure you know how old all the smoke alarms are in your home.  To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date. Fall Pretend Play

Building a Healthy Start: Module 6: Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect of Infants and Toddlers in Early Childhood Setting

I am not a teacher, but an awakener. - Robert Frost

Each Building a Healthy Start module provides information specific to the care of infants and toddlers, and presents a developmental approach to promote optimal health outcomes during the first three years of life. Module 6: Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect of Infants and Toddlers in Early Childhood Settings focuses on strategies to recognize, appropriately address, and prevent abuse and neglect of infants and toddlers who participate in child care.

December 2016 Dance to the Tune of a Different Beat One of the elements of a quality early childhood program as well as an ITERS indicator is to promote acceptance and honor diversity in both centers and in the family-community arena. In this training, you will learn about a conglomerate of ideas, music, books, games and dramatic play which promote developmental appropriate practices where infants and toddlers are served. This training resource is aimed at building pride, showcasing respect for individual difference, and creating an appreciation for diversity and multicultural needs in your program.

You will need: - Fake fall colored leaves, a basket, a pretend rake, & leaf poem Start off the game by singing or reading the poem: “Red and Orange, Yellow, Brown, Leaves are falling on the ground, Red and Orange, Yellow, Brown, Leaves are falling all around” Toss all the leaves in the air. Have the child rake up all the leaves and place them back in the basket. Once all the leaves are collected you repeat the game.  

Preschool Track Welcome to the Preschool Page! Training Sessions offered this quarter: October 2016 A Joyful Journey to Literacy— The Great Debate This training will focus on the journey that literacy takes on for young children. We will focus on what makes sense developmentally and what happens throughout each stage of development. "We know in short, children need time. Time to experience language and time to practice and evaluate what they experience. Time to reflect. Time to develop and time to grow. Then, time to reflect and grow some more." (Karen Stephens, Parenting Exchange)

Finger Play: Ten Brave Firefighters Ten brave firefighters sleeping in a row (one hand in fist) Ding, ding goes the bell (pull a pretend cord or ring a pretend bell with other hand) And down the pole they go (pretend your hands are sliding down a pole) Over to the fire engine--go, go, go (have your arms make running movements) When the fire is out, they go back slow (make driving motion with hands) Then back to bed--all sleeping in a row!

November 2016 Essential Preschool Activities Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write, and count. Childhood is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace which is right for each individual child. - Unknown

This training will focus on activities to promote children’s learning, improve their functional skills, and encourage interaction in the classroom. We will look at adaptable, openended, developmentally appropriate preschool activities and strategies to complement and enhance any early childhood program’s core curriculum. We will explore ideas for creative centers, learning games, group lessons, art activities, as well as suggestions to involve families in children’s early learning.

December 2016 What You Say is What You Get This training focuses on learning how to talk to children so they will listen. The way we talk to a child teaches him how to talk to others. Together we will explore the many facets of how children understand language, whether through facial expressions, tone of voice and/or gestures.

Borax Snowflakes

No snow where you live? No problem! I want to show you how you can make beautiful borax snowflakes at home. Do you have boring old white snow lying around everywhere? You can make snowflakes in bright and bold colors to liven your mood. What you’ll need: Borax laundry detergent booster, Water, Pipe cleaners, String, Scissors, Measuring cup, Empty container, Food coloring (optional), Popsicle stick or pencil Directions: Step 1. Shape your pipe cleaners into snowflakes. You can be as creative as you want here but simple is lovely too. Keep in mind here to not make your snowflake wider than your container. Step 2. Use the string to tie your snowflakes and stick/pencil together. Make the string long enough to fully submerge your snowflake in the Borax. Step 3. Mix your Borax with boiling water. 1/3 cup of Borax to 2 cups of boiling water. Stir until the Borax has dissolved. To add color to the crystals you can add 15-25 drops of food coloring. Step 4. Submerge your snowflake in the Borax solution, resting the stick across the top of the container. Adjust string if needed to keep snowflake in the center of the container and not touching any side. Step 5. Place in a location where it won’t be disturbed and carry on with your day. Step 6. The next morning come back and you will have beeeaaaautiful borax snowflakes! Hang them on your tree, tie them to gifts, or hang them from the ceiling. To grow a second snowflake from the same solution, and trust me, you’ll want to, simply reheat the solution directly in the container in the microwave until all of the borax has redissolved {around 4-6 minutes}. Then, repeat the steps above. http://embracinghomemaking.net/2014/12/borax-snowflakesinspiring-monday/

Step Up to Quality!

October 2016 Inspiring & Improving Relationship Skills Between Families & Teachers According to Erik Erikson, “a child’s early learning is most successful when supported by high-quality relationships between families and teachers.” This training will focus on strategies a Director may employ to encourage positive connections between the staff and the families of the children in their care.

Turkey Baster Feather Race

D.A.P.- What You Should Know An effective teacher begins by intentionally thinking about what children of a certain age are typically like. This knowledge provides a general idea of activities, routine, interactions, and curriculum that will be effective with that age group. However, age appropriate activities aren’t the only factor. The teacher must consider what is individually appropriate for the child based on the child’s developmental level, learning style, personality, etc. This training will provide information on child development levels and activities that are developmentally appropriate to do with children ages birth -5 years old. Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be. - Rita Pierson

What you will need:  turkey baster & feather for each child Tape to mark a “Start” and “Finish” line Begin by making a start and finish line on a table or the floor. Let the fun begin! Have the children move their feather by blowing air on it using the turkey baster. The first child to get their feather to cross the finish line wins! http://theinspiredtreehouse.com/thanksgiving-activities-forkids-turkey-baster-relay/

Tissue Paper Fall Wreath

Reading Aloud: How it Helps with Brain Architecture The American Academy of Pediatrics has advocated the importance of reading aloud to young children birth through early childhood because it can improve language skills, foster literacy early development, and visual imagery. In this training you will learn how the brain architecture is influenced by reading aloud with young children and how to incorporate fun, developmentally appropriate activities to encourage a child’s love for books and reading.

What you will need:  paper plates (or cardboard cut into circles – the panels of a cereal box are great for this)  fall colored tissue paper  glue  brown construction paper or a paper bag  artificial leaves or flowers  ribbon Use paper plates with the centers cut out as the base for the wreaths. Have each child tear a piece of brown construction paper into strips. These strips are supposed to look like twigs or branches. Have the children glue the “branches” around the paper plates. Once the “branches” are glued around the wreath, crumple 3×3 inch squares of fall colored tissue paper and glued those where-ever they please. Next, using a low heat glue gun, add a couple of artificial fall leaves and a ribbon for hanging. Happy fall! http://happyhooligans.ca/tissue-paper-fall-wreath/

Training Track for ALL Ages Advanced Training

Basics in Child Care

Advanced training is training for professionals who have at least three (3) years of experience and 30 credit hours in child development. Advanced level training focuses on a more thorough knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice and high effective application and demonstration skills.

This training session covers topics required in the DHR Minimum Standards for new providers.

October 2016 The Brain: How We Develop Neuroscience research has supported several key factors that have a direct impact on how we interact with young children. The findings are simple, easy to understand, and for the most part, they reinforce what we have known intuitively, from our own experience, and what we were taught in child development classes.

November 2016 English as a Second Language

You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes. You can steer in any direction you choose! - Dr. Seuss

Early childhood education can play an essential role in preparing young English language learners (ELLs) for later success in school. Children who have an opportunity to develop basic foundational skills in language and literacy in preschool enter kindergarten ready to learn to read and write. But how can early childhood educators know if their programs are providing children with the skills they need?

December 2016 Conscious Discipline 101 Conscious Discipline shows significant positive changes across multiple measures in multiple studies, including improving the social-emotional skills of both students and teachers, increasing academic readiness and achievement, and decreasing aggression.

Through interactive activities and discussions, participants will explore the six developmental areas, including Child Development, Language Development, Positive Discipline and Guidance, Quality Child Care and Licensing, Child Care Professional and the Family, and Health, Safety and Universal Precautions.

This course is designed for NEW providers just entering the workforce.
