PLC versus Integrated Life and Process Safety Systems

Integrated Fire & Gas and Life Safety System

Safety PLC • SIL 2 / SIL3 • Inputs, processing and outputs • Open protocol communications • Hardware is generic and designed for various input and output functionality • All logic and functionality is programmed for a project. • Not designed or certified for fire service 7

• SIL 2 / SIL 3 • Inputs, processing and outputs • Open protocol communications • Hardware is purpose built for fire and gas detection service. • The program’s logic and functionality are preengineered for fire and gas detection applications. • Certified to multiple standards for fire service

Examples of Safety Equipment Standards and Certifications

• TUV Certification – Verifies equipment meets Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) on a scale of 1 to 4. Reliability is mathematically measured with four being the highest • GOST R – This certificate assures imported products comply with Russian standards, quality and safety requirements. The GOST R certificate is mandatory for customs clearance in Russia • UL 864 – The UL Standard for Control Units and Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems. The focus is compliance with NFPA 72 standards. • ABS – The American Bureau of Shipping establishes standards for maritime fire safety in the United States. • EN-54 – The European Union standard that specifies requirements and laboratory test for fire alarm equipment.

• CE – A conformity marking for products sold in the European Union. 20
