East Tennessee experiences bone-chilling temperatures BY MOLLY JOHNSON STAFF WRITER arsh winter weather welcomed the beginning of a new semester on Jan. 6, although Hamblen County schools were closed through Jan. 8 for extremely cold temperatures, icy roads and snow. The schools were also on a two-hour delay on Jan. 9. East High School was closed on Jan. 9 due to frozen waterlines. Ha mb l e n County wasn’t the only one experiencing such extreme conditions. Below zero temperatures blew through the entire nation. All 50 states dipped below 32 degrees on Jan. 7. At one point the tri-cities broke the record of 3 degrees set in 1959 and then set a new record at 2 degrees. On Friday, Jan. 10 the town of Dandridge asked its residents to conserve water for 24-hours because of several broken water lines. Dandridge was losing 200,000 gallons

of water a day on top of what they usually use. A non-profitable charity called “Food on Foot,” experienced a devastating loss to their donations when overhead sprinklers burst and flooded the building. The water was at least 3 feet deep. With the return of winter, students have missed seven of 13 stocked up snow days.

or all of you that are reading this article, can you think about the time you got rid of your girlfriend/ boyfriend? All of the anger, the rage, and finally the sheer joy that you are finally done with someone that you learned to loath. Finally just imagine you are done with that person and they show back up in your life. Well it has happened to UT fans and football fans in general; Lane Kiffin has returned to the SEC at a place none other than Alabama. Yes, you heard it right; Nick Saban has hired Lane Kiffin to a new job as offensive coordinator after former OC Doug Nussmeier left to take the Michigan OC job. Lane Kiffin has been dawn as the bad boy of college football, from allegations of Al Davis calling him a flat out liar to Kiffin leaving Knoxville in a 24 hour time period to become the USC head coach.

Soon after Kiffin left the Raiders, he headed to Knoxville and after one season with the Vols, Kiffin finished at 6-7 overall. Finally Kiffin returned to USC and after three seasons and many failed expectations, Kiffin finished 28-15. I think Lane Kiffin may be the only coach in the country that brought a football program to unbelievable heights and then put it back in mediocrity. Regardless of the perspective you or I have of Lane Kiffin, he will be put to the test on August 30th this year, when Alabama will face West Virginia in a season opener. Lastly, the day Lane Kiffin returns to Knoxville on Oct. 25th this year will be a day that lives in not only SEC football history but also college football history.

CBS news describes this project as “‘Octocopter’ drones that will fly packages directly to your doorstep in 30 minutes.” Even the 60 minutes producer Draggan Mihailovich was surprised when he first saw the drone. CBS news stated, “Mihailovich thought they resembled giant, flying tarantulas.” Although this technology does not involve spiders, some people might have similar feelings toward these drones if they do become a part of daily life. This 30 minute quick gift delivery is most likely not worth the extra $80 shipping fee. Beside the point, gifts most often take more than a few minutes to choose for each person. So, that leaves the question of what particular situation would call for a 30 minute delivery system called the Amazon Prime Air. Is there a need for this invention at this time? Amazon Prime air is a new way of shopping that the top inventors at the company will hope to reveal to customers in little as 4 to 5 years. If you had not received this award, who do you think would have? Cook: With out a doubt Megan Horner or Courtney Burgess. They are both extremely talented singers and performers. Wolfe: I believe any student in the band could have won. It takes serious talent to know how to play an instrument while marching in correct choreographed formation.

How long have you been in Choir? Cook: I have been a part of the West High Choir since my freshman year. Mrs. Bowen has helped me prepare to continue my singing career through college. Wolfe: Maggie and I have been apart of the West High Choir since freshman year. Getting to share the title of Choir President with her is an honor.

What is your talent? Cook: I am fairly good at juggling with my eyes closed. Wolfe: My talents are: singing, playing the drums, and sometimes I like to break dance!

Avery Wolfe and Maggie Cook were named Most Talented by the Senior Class of 2014.

Hayes said, “It’s been a privilege to educate all of the students who have walked in my door the past 12 years.” Students have enjoyed him as a teacher also. Junior Bailey Satterfield, a student new to the PreCalculus class of Mr. Hayes as of January, enjoys his teaching style.

“He is very interesting. He’s serious about teaching, but adds laughter to lighten the mood,” said Satterfield. Elizabeth Carroll, junior, took PreCalculus from Hayes last year and is now taking his year-long AP Calculus class. Long time student Carroll also had similar feelings toward Mr. Hayes and his teaching style. “He has a good mix of humor and se-

riousness. He knows how to make a boring class like Calculus kind of fun,” said Carroll. Hayes’ devotion to his students has proven a successful career. Hayes will continue in the competition against East High’s Teacher of the Year. He is honored to be voted as Teacher of the Year, but he says to always remember, “Never look down on someone unless you’re lifting them up.”
