advocacy in action - the year in review

ver the past year it has been rewarding to see the advances that have been made across the country to promote bike use. The launch of bike share programs in places like New York and Chicago hint that bicycles and bicyclists have begun to reclaim their place in our urban landscape. Our mission to give back to bicycle advocacy continues and our partnerships during the past year have included key national initiatives as well as many locally-targeted programs that focus on transforming our cities and towns into safe and convenient places to bike.

On the national level, we have continued our long-standing financial support of the Alliance for Biking and Walking, a coalition of 160 local and state bike and pedestrian advocacy groups. We worked closely with the League of American Bicyclists and again helped to sponsor the National Bike Summit in Washington D.C. and the League’s second annual National Bike Challenge which aimed for 50,000 riders to pedal 20 million miles throughout the summer months. Equally inspiring was our sponsorship of the third annual Youth Bike Summit which attracted spirited participation from over 360 youth and adults from 22 states and four countries who are at the center of a growing movement that is developing and inspiring the next generation of bicycle advocates. Additionally, we sponsored a day of Adventure Cycling Association’s “Build It. Bike It. Be a Part of It.” campaign that raised over $128,000 for the U.S. Bicycle Route System. On the local level, we are energized by the fact that communities across the country are embracing bicycles and building infrastructure to make our cities and towns more livable. In an effort to support this progress, we supported seventeen Earna-Bike programs across the country helping to empower kids to fix, earn, use and enjoy bicycles. Our support of WE Bike NYC helped to get more women biking. We provided lights to seven “Be Bright” initiatives which raise awareness about safe cycling and provide free lights to those in need. Speaking of people in need, it was evident that bikes were the best mode of transportation in the Big Apple when the city got swamped by Hurricane Sandy. To help get citizens moving safely again, we worked with Transportation Alternatives to hand out lights so that residents could put their bikes to work in the days and weeks following the big blow. For the past sixteen years we are proud of the part we have played to help make our communities more bicycle-friendly. More importantly, we are continually fueled by the energy, commitment and intelligence of the countless individuals and organizations who work tirelessly to improve conditions for bicyclists and, as a direct result, improve the health of individuals, communities and the planet.

or nearly a decade, Planet Bike has honored the less celebrated heroes of biking: the bicycle SUPERCOMMUTER. A SUPERCOMMUTER has made the bicycle an integral part of his or her life and chooses the simplicity, vigor and pleasure of bicycling when heading off to work, the grocery store, a concert or the cafe. Here is a look at the four Planet Bike SUPERCOMMUTERS from the past twelve months. Although the esteemed group has widely different backgrounds, they all share a deep passion for the bicycle and ride through every season, in all types of weather, day and night. We hope their stories inspire you about how life can be better by bike. Dr. Julian Shepard is an Associate Professor of Biological Science at SUNY-Binghamton specializing in the behavior and ecology of arthropods. He started biking in 1964 as an easy and inexpensive way to get around while in grad school and he has never stopped. That’s right, Dr. Shepherd has been commuting by bike for 49 years! No matter if it’s a cold and snowy winter’s morning or a warm and wet summer evening, the ride remains invigorating for the good professor. Medical student Christian Beuschel has called Indianapolis home long enough to have experienced the capricious cycles of Midwestern weather. Nevertheless, he is committed to commuting by bike even at 4am straight into a 25 mph wind, through swirling

snow on his way to a 24 hour shift. Christian’s prescriptions for commuting success include setting a comfortable pace, obeying the rules of the road and refraining from bike snobbery. We’d like to add one more bit of healthful advice -- “A bicycle commute a day keeps the doctor away.” For the past 3 years, Mary Beth Brown has been living car-free by pedaling herself around the streets of Louisville, Kentucky. She’s also invested in making bicycling safer, more popular and more fun for the citizens of the Derby City. She has served on the board of Bicycling for Louisville, plans group rides to introduce people to bicycle commuting and even leads a group of fancily-dressed cyclists to Churchill Downs during the lead up to the Kentucky Derby. Mary Beth says, “I am dedicated to bicycling as a legitimate means of transportation, and will talk about it to anyone I meet.” You won’t find anyone as passionate about recumbents as Josh Sims. As an eight year old boy, he booked 1000 summer time miles. Now he logs over 150 miles per week commuting and riding around San Francisco on his VeloKraft VK3. Additionally, Josh is eager to share his knowledge by teaching others how to ride recumbents. In Josh’s mind, commuting by bike is a piece of cake when compared to the hardships brought on by navigating the streets of San Francisco in a car. Josh’s advice for new commuters is that, “the right bicycle and gear can make all the difference. If you’re comfortable, you’ll choose to ride.”
