Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 19 shots he faced in relief during the third period to preserve the 3-2 victory. -Six of the last nine games between the Penguins and Hurricanes have been one-goal affairs. -Matt Cullen will miss 3-4 weeks after taking a shot off the foot against Washington. That ended a streak of 149-straight games played (regular season and playoffs) for Cullen since joining the Penguins last year. -Fans coming to Sunday’s Penguins-Bruins game are encouraged bring their Terrible Towels or Penguins playoff rally towels to show support for the Pittsburgh Steelers (more on this game in a blurb below). QUICK HITS 1) Evgeni Malkin has a five-game point streak (5G-2A-7PTS). If he gets a point tonight, he’ll equal his season-long streak of six games established between Nov. 25-Dec. 5 (2G-9A-11PTS). 2) Justin Schultz notched a career-high four assists against the Capitals on Monday, including his 100th NHL helper. Schultz leads all NHL blueliners since Nov. 30 with 25 points (7G-18A) in 22 games, tied with San Jose’s Brent Burns (as of Jan. 19). 3) Pittsburgh is 10-2-2 this season without Kris Letang. 4) The Penguins have scored at least once on the power play in 12 of their last 17 games (19 for 60; 31.7%).

5) Sidney Crosby sits 12 points shy of joining the 1,000-point club.

PENGUINS vs. HURRICANES: Pittsburgh’s All-Time Record vs. Hurricanes: 68-54-17 In Pittsburgh: 37-25-7 In Carolina: 31-29-10 OT Record vs. Hurricanes: 10-6-10 Shootout Record vs. Hurricanes: 5-1 2016-17 Results: Penguins lead 1-0 TEAM NOTES: DON’T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED As the NHL All-Star Break looms in a couple of weeks, it’s a good time to delve deeper into the numbers being produced by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin this season. Both are having MVP-caliber years, and they are playing arguably the best hockey at the same time in their 11 years together. Heading into tonight, Crosby and Malkin are two of just three NHL players (Connor McDavid is the other) to reach 50 points (as of Jan. 19). In the 38 games they’ve skated together, at least one has recorded a point in 36 of the 38 games. They are on pace to combine for 93 goals and 193 points this year. Those totals would represent (by far) the highest goal totals they’ve posted together, and the third-highest point total (highest since 2008-09). Below are the highest combined single-season goal and point totals they’ve produced since joining forces: Year Goals Year 2016-17 93* 2008-09 2009-10 79 2006-07 2007-08 71 2016-17 2006-07 69 2009-10 *Projected ***Only season both topped 100 points together

Points 216*** 205 193* 186

As things stand now, it appears as though both players will score 30 goals in the same season for just the third time together, and the first time since ’08-09. MALKIN A DIFFERENCE Evgeni Malkin tallied his 11th career hat trick against the Capitals to spur the Penguins to an 8-7 overtime win. By scoring three times, Malkin was able to move into a tie with Jean Pronovost for fourth place on the team’s all-time goal-scoring list with 316 goals. When Malkin notches his next tally, the quartet of Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and Malkin will rank Nos. 1-4 in goals, assists and points in franchise history. Malkin and Sidney Crosby (27 goals) joined the Winnipeg Jets duo of Patrik Laine (21 goals) and Mark Scheifele (20 goals) as the only ones in the NHL with a pair of 20-goal scorers. Malkin’s second goal of the game against Washington allowed him to reach 20 goals for the fourth-straight year and the ninth time overall. SEASON HIGH FOR SID Captain Sidney Crosby ended his season-high five-game goalless drought in dramatic fashion, scoring once and adding three assists for a season-high four points against Washington on Monday night. Crosby, teammate Evgeni Malkin and Edmonton’s Connor McDavid are locked in an intense battle in the NHL scoring race. McDavid currently paces everyone with 54 points in 47 games, four ahead of Crosby and Malkin, who each have 50. McDavid’s Oilers have three games in hand on the Penguins. If you take their current averages and project them over the remainder of the season, Crosby will net 100 points, McDavid 94 points and Malkin 93 points.

DEFENSE! DEFENSE! Two days after giving up a season-high-tying seven goals in an 8-7 OT win against Washington, the Penguins put together a stifling defensive effort against the Canadiens that would make James Harrison and the Steelers’ defense proud. Pittsburgh gave up just 20 shots to the Canadiens, the second-lowest number of shots given up by the Penguins this season behind the 17 they allowed in a 6-1 win at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 23. BOUNCING BACK Goalie Matt Murray recovered from the toughest start of his NHL career (7 goals allowed in an 8-7 win vs. Washington) to stop 19 of 20 shots to pick up his 15th win. During his regular-season career, Murray is 5-1 with a 1.98 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage following a regulation loss. Last year, during the playoffs, Murray went 6-0 with a 1.63 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage after a loss. PITTSBURGH-NEW ENGLAND SHOWDOWN Pittsburgh and Boston take center stage in the sports world on Sunday, as the Penguins host the Bruins at 3 PM at PPG Paints Arena, followed by the AFC Championship Game between the NFL’s Steelers and New England Patriots at 6:40 PM. During the last two seasons, the Penguins are 3-0 in games played on the same day that the Steelers play a playoff game (1-0 this year; 6-2 win on Jan. 8 vs. TBL). STELLAR SID STATS Sidney Crosby has been the NHL’s best and most consistent player since the calendar flipped to 2016 last January. Here are some Crosby facts from his run: *He hasn’t gone back-to-back games without a point since Feb. 24-27 of last season (needs a point tonight to keep this going). During that span, he has accumulated points in 50 of 59 games, amassing a total of 79 points (38G-41A). *Pittsburgh is 18-2-2 this year in games when Crosby scores a goal. *Since Crosby returned from missing the first six games of the season with a concussion, he has points in 30 of 38 games. The Penguins are 22-5-3 when he records a point and 3-4-1 when he does not. FAST FACTS FROM #PITvsMTL *Eric Fehr returned to the lineup from a two-game absence and promptly scored the game-winning goal. In his two seasons with Pittsburgh, Fehr has scored a combined 17 goals between the regular season and playoffs. Seven of those tallies have been gamewinners. *This season, three of Fehr’s six goals have been game-winning tallies. *Cameron Gaunce made his Pittsburgh debut (had played 20 career games w/DAL & COL), collecting his first NHL assist on Jake Guentzel’s goal. *Speaking of Guentzel, the AHL’s leading goal scorer (21) has points in both games since returning to Pittsburgh (1G-1A). He has points in five of seven career NHL appearances. *Olli Maatta’s goal was his first of the year, and first since Feb. 8, 2016 at Anaheim. Maatta has four points (1G-3A) in his last seven contests. *Patric Hornqvist had two assists, equaling a season high. He has three helpers in his past two games. 2016-17 REGULAR-SEASON SPECIAL TEAMS BREAKDOWN Power Play Overall: 35-152, 23.0% 5-on-4: 33-146, 22.6% 5-on-3: 1-4, 25.0% 4-on-3: 1-4, 25.0% Penalty Kill Overall: 119-152, 78.3% 5-on-4: 104-133, 78.2% 5-on-3: 9-12, 75.0% 4-on-3: 5-6, 83.3%
