Detroit Red Wings: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Jeff Blashill Blashill, 42, is the 27th coach in Detroit history and the first American to lead the Red Wings. He is in his fifth season with the organization, spending one season as an assistant for Detroit (2011-12) and three seasons as head coach of the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins (2012-15). With the Griffins, Blashill led the club to the three most successful seasons in franchise history, winning a 2013 Calder Cup and being named the 2014 AHL Coach of the Year. Twenty-four players who skated for him in Grand Rapids went on to play at least one NHL game. Blashill also won a championship during his first-ever season as a head coach with the USHL's Indiana Ice in 2008-09. He coached the Ice for two seasons before serving one season as head coach at Western Michigan. A former goaltender at Ferris State, he got his coaching start at his alma mater (1998-02) as an assistant and served in the same role for Miami University from 2002-08.
