Mr. O’Malley provided information about the 2013-14 budget, which is on the agenda for the regular Board meeting. Mr. O’Malley reported: The Board of Education’s main priority has been focused on students and academics without elimination of students programs or opportunities; the budget has limited the increase in overall expenditures to less than 2% compared to the FY 2013 budget; the District continues to operate soundly despite reductions to Mandated Categorical Grants, General State Aide and Transportation revenues; cut discretionary budget for the fifth straight year, resulting in a $164,000 plus reduction to the budget for supplies/materials compared to FY 2013; reduced the technology budget for the fifth straight year, saving $58,000 compared to FY 2013; a reduction of over $634,000 in the Operation & Maintenance Fund; and the Capital Fund was reduced by more than $335,000. No Illinois State Board of Education deficit reduction plan is required by the District for the FY 2014 budget.

Elijah Reed and Tiffany Jones provided the Good News Report for Tinley Park High School including: Four students were honored for their community service at the Acorn Public Library in Oak Forest; alumnus Tanejah Hicks won a $1,000 scholarship through CitiTrends; Homecoming theme for this year is “Glow in the Dark” and activities will include Spirit Week, parade, football games and a dance; the band is holding Bingo Nights several times this year; the Boys’ Frosh/Soph Cross Country Team won the District 228 Quad; the Girls’ Swimming Team is off to a great start recently setting three pool records; the Boys’ Soccer Team recently won over Richards High School; and the Boys’ Golf Team recently defeated the Oak Lawn Spartans.

Good News Reports

Erika Arias, Caitlin Chismark and Teagan Doyle provided information regarding the Oak Forest High School Ecology Club’s preservation projects, including: Restoring a portion of Yankee Woods, restoring grasslands at Bartel Grasslands, which was featured in a video shown in Washington D.C. at the National Bird Conference. The club also took wilderness excursions to Indiana Dunes and Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. They thanked the Board of Education for the opportunity to share their experiences. Claudia McGee-Morales provided the Good News Report for Hillcrest High School including: A Back to School Parade and BBQ was held for the community; members of the Girls’ Tennis Team volunteered at the Special Olympics of Illinois; the H.O.P.E. 2013-0917

Program has 33 upperclassmen mentoring freshmen; the Girls’ Tennis Team is currently 8-2; the Girls’ Volleyball Team opened their season with a win over Thornton; and the Boy’s Golf Team have won three consecutive matches. Jesus Benitez provided the Good News Report for Bremen High School including: Opening day for freshmen students was a success, with the Freshmen Advisory Group assisting freshmen in locating classrooms, opening lockers and answering questions; the first Braves Caravan was held with parents and community members taking a tour of the facilities; the Freshmen Leadership group participated in a hands-on teambuilding day at Iron Oaks in Olympia Fields; The Boys’ Cross Country Team won the District 228 Quad meet; the Girls’ Cross Country Team tied for First Place at the District 228 Quad meet; the Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team will host the Rucinski Cup charitable match on September 26; the football teams are performing strongly; and Bremen currently has eight former football players playing in the college ranks. 1

Mr. Kirkton opened the floor to the public for comments. There being no comments, Mr. Kirkton closed the floor to the public.

Superintendent’s Report

Freedom of Information Act Request Since the last regular Board meeting, the following Freedom of Information Act requests were received: Mr. George Gross, of Midlothian, requested all invoices for the last two years related to David Abler, IMSA and Aurora University’s business with District 228. This request has been filled. Ms. Lisa Searing, Assistant Professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, requested our nursing job description. This request has been filled. Salary and Benefits Report Dr. Kendall presented the 2013-14 Administrator and Teacher Salary and Benefit Report. Pursuant to Illinois School Code 5/10-20.47, each school board shall report to the State Board of Education, on or before October 1 of each year, the base salary and benefits of the district superintendent, all administrators and teachers employed by the school district. Prior to this annual reporting, the information must be presented at a regular School Board meeting and posted to the District’s web site. Superintendent’s Report 

Dr. Kendall invited everyone to attend the 2013 College & Career Expo at South Suburban College on Wednesday, September 25 from 5-7:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Career Development System and provides another tool for parents and students to prepare for the future.



Dr. Kendall and Ms. DeVos met with our newly formed group of Student Public Relations Interns. These students will be working with the schools and District Office to expand our Public Relations Department.



Dr. Kendall thanked the Tinley Park Arts Council for generously donating approximately $3,000. These funds will be split between the Band, Drama and Art Departments.



Dr. Kendall congratulated Dr. Williams and the JFA for their combined efforts to make the transition to the new evaluation model as smooth and as 2013-0917

valuable as possible. To date, Dr. Williams has led 11 training classes with over 360 teachers in attendance. Dr. Kendall also acknowledged the bravery of Mr. Dan Uniek, who has volunteered to have his entire evaluation process videotaped and analyzed as a training tool for both administrators and teachers. Dr. Kendall stated he is very impressed by the professional efforts of our staff to understand the process and firmly believes that we will be better teachers and learners because of the cooperative spirit that our staff has demonstrated. 1

Ms. Stearns reported that she met with a new transfer student from the Illinois Math and Science Academy. The student stated that academically we are probably in line with the academy, we provide a much better social experience, and have caring teachers. The student also said his parents looked into several communities before choosing ours and they couldn’t be happier.

Mr. Browne reported the Finance Committee met on September 9 to discuss the regular monthly items, the legal budgets for District 228 and CDS, the working cash abatement, and Tort Fund Re-Designation.

Committee Reports

Pastor Mensing reported that the Teaching & Learning Committee met on September 10 to discuss class size review, an additional section request, and an overnight field trip request. Mrs. Gleason reported the Personnel Committee met on September 9 to discuss employment, leaves and a resignation for certificated staff, and employment and leave for education support staff. 3

Mr. Canning stated he is happy to see the coaches and chaperones who will be attending. Discussion took place regarding transparency, committee work, costs involved and special presentations.
