School Presentations

Jean Uniek and Pete Sansone saw Pear Dec software at a conference. It takes presentations and turns it into a teaching/learning tool for real time. It gets students engaged and actively participating. Through a mini-grant, they were able to get a license for the software until February 2018. Twenty-one teachers are participating, with the hope to expand to the other buildings. Janna Canning, Kelly Lattyak and Eric Royer investigated curriculum placement for integrated math. The trio observed classes and had a dialogue with other high schools. They advised that reading would be more important and it would involve more critical thinking. The teachers are very excited about this program. Kathy O’Connor researched ADHD. Five students presented information. They talked about flash-card type exercises including items like breather reminders, kind wishes, making plans for things you’ve always wanted to do. Other high schools and colleges are using this. The program is called Mindful Moves. Keith Huhn, Jennifer Gleason, Erin Collins, D.J. Brown, Susan Kamp, Dori Nevin, and Nicole Walus, researched Discipline & Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS). Teachers visited other schools to observe. Cooperation from all teachers is needed to help identify patterns and behaviors with a teacher survey. They are looking at some grants for future use, and also rooms to have interventions, inschool suspensions, and advisory periods. Cassie Gaines and Jennifer Simak researched innovating curriculum (outdoor education = survival skills, outdoor cooking, teambuilding, etc.) The class will be offered in 2018. They also looked at how to use iPads in the Physical Education 2017-0221

classroom as well as an app for workout routines. Also, ProSports Performance has approached them about training, so it can be taught in the classroom. 1

Lisa Giglio-Byczek introduced interns Diamond Douglas (Tinley Park/Oak Forest) from Valparaiso University; Kathryn Walsh (Bremen) Loyola University; and Tyrone Wheeler (Hillcrest) Loyola University. Jen Lucas and Jen Castor stated that the traditional psychology route would be testing. The interns noted what they do in addition to testing.

Psychology Intern Program

Diamond has work with Positive Life Changes. It helps students work through any changes they may be going through. She is also part of the BRIDGES program at Oak Forest and Delta Night School at Bremen. Kathryn has been heavily involved with Special Ed testing and a response intervention process to identify anxiety and stress concerns. She is also working with the PALS program with behavior and social emotional needs, and Erica’s Lighthouse teen depression program. Jerome works with testing and also sat on Hillcrest’s Rising Star Team, and a social skills group for freshmen boys, which covers impulse control and emotional regulation. He also worked with a job skills group with CORE students, and collaborated with staff in the EXCEL program. He is a team member at Hillcrest/Tinley Park behavior supports program and RTI at Hillcrest. Ms. Giglio-Byczek noted that the students picked our District for their internships. 2

Ms. Stearns opened the floor to the public for comments. Joni Crosetto of the Oak Forest Lacrosse program, thanked everyone for the countless hours on the bond, as well as the time of the Board. There being no further communications Ms. Stearns closed the floor to the public.

The 43rd Annual District Fine Arts Festival will take place on Thursday, March 16 at Hillcrest High School. This event begins at 5pm with an exhibit of outstanding artwork created by art students from our four high schools. At 6:30pm, the concert will begin with guest conductors leading our band and choir students to entertain the crowd. Guest conductors include Dr. Robert Sinclair, Director of Choral Activities from VanderCook College of Music; Mr. Andy Hoefle, retired professor of music from South Suburban College of Music; and Dr. Ronnie Wooten, professor of music from Northern Illinois University. The evening will also include the Ferraro Scholarship, presented to a fine arts student and named after former Board member Eleanor Ferraro.

Mrs. Resler read a statement about a threat to her from Board Member Larry Canning.

Board Member Reports

Ms. Stearns reported that she attended parent teacher conferences, which were well attended. The presentations this evening are a fine example of why we do not have a volunteer requirement for graduation. Students volunteer out of the goodness of their heart, not because they have to. Ms. Stearns then reminded Board candidates that using the District logos for political purposes for election is forbidden, and also not to use student photos for election purposes. 2
