Location, location, location By Charles Norman

A

ny realtor will tell you that location is the single most important factor in the value of a property. It is especially true of Traverse Bay Corner at the intersection of Manitoba Highways 59 and 11. Nellie’s Corner 1972 When asked to advertise in the local paper the owner told the salesman; “My location is all the advertising I need” It has been that way since the beginning, but while location was important to the first owners of the land at Traverse Bay Corner, it was for reasons different from those usually recognized by real estate agents. Nellie and Leon Danwich were desperate to get away from Leon’s family. They lived along side them on the shore of Traverse Bay where they made a living from farming and fishing. “They were always telling us what to do, always, always telling us what to do.” Nellie Danwich said. But every time they tried to buy a parcel of Crown land someone else got there before them. They were half expecting the same problem when 240 acres at what is now the intersection of the two highways came up for sale. Leon Danwich decided to bid $300 for the property. Price was not the only factor the province took into consideration, the need of the applicant also had to be taken into account, but they were not giving the land away. Leon did not have $300. He borrowed it from fish buyer Mike Mackleson with a promise to repay the loan out of future catches. As Leon approached the desk of the official at the Land Office in Winnipeg, a pile of papers was accidentally knocked to the floor. Leon stooped to help pick them up and noticed that what he had picked up were other bids on the same piece of property. On the very top was a bid from the man Leon had borrowed the $300 from – Mike Mackleson. “I see my neighbour is bidding on the same property.” Leon said to the woman handling the registrations. “Oh, she said, “he doesn’t need it, he’s only got one Eastern Beaches

child. You need it more, I’m going to see you get it.” (Leon and Nellie had twelve children.). They got the land, in June 1952, and immediately started building a home for the family. Leon had a small sawmill and using lumber from the land they had just purchased, and with the help of the children, they built a home at the same location as the Plum Creek Gift Store now stands. At that time there was no Highway 59 – just a logging trail on the road allowance – but there was some traffic. They built a snack bar on their property and began selling hamburgers, pop and candy to help support the family. “Everybody liked Nellie’s Burgers,” Nellie told The Cottager, “they don’t make them like that any more. Then came highway construction crews, and soon Nellie was supplying meals to construction workers. With the completion of Highway 59, followed immediately by Highway 11, came the summer visitors and trade boomed. Traverse Bay Corner has changed hands four times since then. The original snack bar is now the convenience store. Later, Nellie’s son Ken Danwich, added the building additions now housing the Laundromat, Idle Thyme Restaurant and Traverse Bay Auto. Leon died in 1964. After selling the snack bar, Nellie purchased a Beaver Lumber package home and built her present home just north of the Traverse Bay Property. Nellie, who will turn 90 this summer, still lives there. Location! Location! Location! The property Leon Danwich purchased for $300 in 1952 recently changed hands for a substantial amount more!

LAKE WINNIPEG FOUNDATION

E

stablished in 2005 with a mandate to actively promote the health of Lake Winnipeg, the foundation is dedicated to achieve this goal through support for research, education, management and coordination. Lake Winnipeg is facing some serious health issues. One of these issues is the accumulation of phosphorous and nitrogen resulting in algal blooms which have the potential to kill fish as well as to produce algal toxins. Lake Winnipeg is the 10th largest lake in the world by surface area and drains more land area than any of the Great Lakes and it has been studied less than other large lake. Contact Information: Box 376, Matlock, MB. R0C 2B0

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE HEALTH OF LAKE WINNIPEG?

OPEN HOUSE Sunday, July 16th Time: 1:00 p.m. Victoria Beach Community Club Presentations will be made by Rev. Robin Mather, president of the LWF and Dr Lyle Lockhart, board member and well known Canadian scientist. There will be time for questions and to visit the information areas in the Community club. VICTORIA BEACH SNOWDRIFTERS SNOWMOBILE CLUB

I

t’s a snowmobile riders paradise! An abundance of nice white snow, good weather temperatures and great trails makes for another great season. We have the reputation of having some of the best-maintained trails in Manitoba! Our club grooms trails on the lake from Albert Beach to Hecla, the Shoreline trail to Belair, Traverse Bay, Hillside, Belair areas, Stead trail to Hwy 304 and the Northstar trail up to Pine Falls. So if you have enjoyed riding these trails this winter, you have our Groomer operators to thank for over 300 hours of volunteer work. Many more volunteer hours (probably another 100 hours) is spent annually maintaining the Groomer and maintaining/marking the trails. Our club received the distinction of having the Snoman ‘Groomer of the year’ being awarded to Norm Brunel at the annual Snoman meeting in October 2005. We want to thank our Snopass vendors, you did a great job and without your support we would not have the funds to keep the trails in such good condition. When buying your Snopass make sure the name of our club is on the pass so that we are the club that receives the credit. As well, we encourage snowmobilers who ride our trail system to support the club by buying their annual club membership. We cannot take it for granted that we will always have these nice trail conditions, if we do not have a club, we do not own a groomer, so no trails will be maintained. I’m sure many remember the condition of our trails prior to them being groomed! It is not a lot of money, only $35. per family or $20. single annually. Volunteers do all the work but we do require funds to keep the big yellow machine maintained and fuelled. Our club is only as good as its volunteers. To all who have worked hard to make our year a success..Thank You. The club executive has two vacant positions: Vice President and Events Coordinator. If anyone is interested in these positions, please visit our website at ww.vbsnowdrifters.ca or inform any club member who is active in the club. UnPhoto: Kaz fortunately, we were unable to hold any social functions this season due to lack of volunteers. The Kids Carnival was cancelled for the first time since probably 1962, which is unfortunate, as the children really enjoyed this event, held on Elk Island. The continued enjoyment of snowmobiling in our area is dependent on a very simple equation: Club membership + volunteers = Snoman funding = Great groomed trails. Our mailing address is Box 280, Traverse Bay, MB R0E 2A0 18

EAST BEACHES RECREATION & WELLNESS CENTRE

‘A

n ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ are the current “buzz words” we hear almost daily in the media and from our governments. The federal government speaks about the importance of focusing on healthy lifestyles to reduce health care costs. In March 2006, the provincial government Healthy Living Minister, Theresa Oswald announced that more than $1.5 million will go towards nutrition, physical activity and injury prevention programs to help build opportunities for healthier choices for Manitobans. A Government of Manitoba news release has quoted the Minister as saying “By working together, we can create communities where healthy choices are easier choices and work towards making Manitoba the healthiest province in the country.” The Manitoba in Motion program is part of a provincial strategy to increase the physical activity of Manitobans for improved health. Fortunately, for all permanent and seasonal residents of the East Beaches communities, there has been an active group of volunteers working together to build an affordable and accessible complex locally that would provide opportunities for active living with the outcome of improved health for citizens of all ages in our communities. The East Beaches Recreation and Wellness Coalition Inc. that was formed in 2002 consists of a Board of Directors and many volunteers actively pursuing this project. At this time we have a site, which was donated by the RM of Alexander (look for the sign on the west side of Hwy 59 at the Hwy 11 junction), there is a proposed architectural schematic plan, the business plan is being finalized and fundraising has been launched. Some bear facts

T

here were many bear/human encounters in 2005 within the R. M. of Victoria Beach. Council is concerned that these encounters will continue to escalate increasing the risk to public safety if some preventative measures are not taken. Council recognizes that it has a significant role to play in improving this potentially dangerous situation and has decided to take some steps to reduce the possibility of injury to residents and cottagers, as follows: 1. Passage of a By-Law prohibiting the feeding of wildlife, including birds, regulating the storage of feed, food and garbage and prohibiting the placement of refrigerators, freezers and other similar storage devices on open decks, screened porches and other unsecured locations

Photo: Kathie Fitzpatrick

2. Investigating ways to improve the efficiency of the garbage pick-up process 3. Encouraging and promoting the co-operation of cottagers/residents to properly store garbage and remove garbage from their property if they will be absent on “garbage day” – either to transport home or deposit in garbage cage at Municipal Public Works Yard 4. Closer monitoring and more aggressive enforcement of “Anti-Dumping By-Law” infractions by our Municipal Police The commitment of all stakeholders is necessary if the Municipality is to realize its goal of “improved garbage management” which should significantly reduce the occurrences of bear/human encounters. Cottagers and residents could play a major role in our success – we know that humans and wildlife can co-habit and flourish if there is a will to do so. Lets give it our best effort. More information will be provided relative to the implementation of items 2, and 3 via the Victoria Beach Herald and/or other suitable means of communication. R. M. of Victoria Beach Council 36

Maskwa Snowmobiles Clubs’ 40th Anniversary by Ian Cyr

T

his year has been a very trying year as far as grooming goes not only in the Eastern region but in the whole Province. The mild winter and no ice in the swamps, creeks and rivers make it difficult to get from point A to point B with the large groomers that are used today. The Maskwa presently maintains 180kms of trail, but this year our club decided to get out of the grooming business, so we sold our Massey groomer and let the neighboring clubs pick up the trails that connect to their trail system, which made total sense not only for us but for the neighboring clubs. Instead of the groomers operating 2 or 3 days a week they are now going 5 days a week maximizing their equipment usage. These clubs are also claiming the extra mileage to put towards the allocation of funding given to them next fall. The Maskwa still does all the signing, brushing and maintaining of the shelters. Now that we are not grooming we are spending more time on these club issues that have been neglected over the years, because our main priority was grooming and nothing else. We presently do not have any trails that do not go to a destination. In other words we have no feeder trails or as I like to call it, B trails in our system, so it is critical that these trails get maintained on a regular basis. You have to remember we are trying to sell the snopass and with no consistency with grooming the trail system, you are going to get a lot of angry snopass purchasers and possibly lose their business for good, we already have a lot of free loaders as it is, we do not want anymore. Our Club is presently working on putting a 40th Anniversary DVD together with memories from 1965 to present. The touching part of the DVD is the tribute to the members that have past away during the clubs existence. The DVD is in chapters so each club function will have its own chapter with a story behind every chapter from our more senior members who founded the club 40 years ago. The DVD will be for sale to the public this summer, so watch for it, I think it is a great way to restore memories while some of our senior members are still active members. 38

The Cottager

2006 Photo Contest

Win one of 3 great prizes!

It is time for amateur photographers to start snapping those memorable moments at the lake. The Cottager is seeking entries for its 2006 photo contest which will reward the first, second and third place finishers with valuable prizes (no substitutions). Deadline for entries is Dec. 31, 2006. The names of the winners will be published in our spring 2007 edition.

1st prize

Table & Chair set from sears home store not exactly as shown Sears Home Store Ellice Ave. at St. James Street Winnipeg MB (204) 779-1999

Here are the rules of the contest:

2nd prize

custom painted chair from cottage classics not exactly as shown

3rd prize

Fuji FinePix A400 - 4.1 mega pixel digital camera

1. Any cottager is eligible to enter, except for professional photographers and employees of The Cottager. 2. You may submit more than one entry, but each photo must be identified with your name, address, phone number and title even if all photos are sent in the same envelope. 3. All entries become the property of Cottager's Publications and will not be returned. Cottager's Publications will have exclusive rights to use the photographs for any purpose, including publishing your photographs in print or electronic form in future issues, for product reviews, or for promotional purposes without further notice or compensation. 4. To qualify, a photo must portray a scene or an event at a cottage or a lake.

Note: When choosing the winners of our contest we look for photos that “capture the moment” and provide an inside, personal look at cottage country. While our criteria is based upon content, we also have to consider the quality of the print submitted. This is becoming a bit of a concern with digital photography and at home printers. Low resolution of a photo and poor print quality deter from the photo itself. If you think you’ve got “a winner” it may be worthwhile getting it professionally printed.

Walter Whyte School:

A history of bringing students together

W

alter Whyte School is located at the junction of Highway 59 and Jackfish Lake Road. The school is steeped in a long and interesting history. Walter Whyte School currently boasts a population of 150 students from Kindergrten to Senior 1 (Grade 9). All of our students are bussed to Walter Whyte School from areas in the Eastern Beaches such as: Victoria Beach, Hillside, Belair, Lester, Grand Marais, Gull Lake, Beaconia and a small number of students from Brokenhead. Prior to the construction and opening of Walter Whyte Collegiate in 1960 students attended eight schools located from Brokenhead First Nations to Victoria Beach. These schools were located approximately 5-7 miles apart therefore some students did have to walk or horseback/sleighride up to seven miles to attend school each day. In speaking with some of the old timers here in the area these were tough times but also great times as they tell their interesting old stories. A book including their stories was published by the R.M. of St. Clements. These 8 school included: Stony Point, Beaconia, Balsam Bay, Grand Marais, Dunlop, Hillside, Belair and Victoria Beach. Some of these schools are still standing today. Grand Marais School and Victoria Beach School offered programs ranging from Grade 1 to 11 with 2 teachers and later with 3 teachers before the Walter Whyte Collegiate opened in the late fall of 1960. Prior to the opening of Walter Whyte Collegiate a 4 room school, there were a number of public meetings held along with the trustee, Mr. Walter Whyte. Beaconia School

At that time the 8 schools remained open and when students completed Grade 9 they would attend Walter Whyte Collegiate until they completed Grade 11. They would then finish their Grade 12 High School Diploma at Selkirk or any other high school within the Province of Manitoba. In 1967 the Lord Selkirk School Division formed and after numerous meetings it was decided to consolidate all 8 school into one – Walter Whyte School. The school was renovated and expanded to house students from Kindergarten to Grade 9. A grand opening took place ten years after the Walter Whyte Collegiate opened marking a new beginning in 1970.

Day Driving Tour Are you interested in taking a day trip from the beaches?

S

tart your day by taking Hwy #11 towards Pine Falls. Stop at the Hydro Power Dam in Powerview (one of the larger generating stations along the Winnipeg River system). Please phone 204-474-3233 and make arrangements for a free guided tour. Carry back on #11 to the community of St. Georges. It has retained its French culture. Visit the beautiful Fort Bas de le Riviere and Tea Room. There you can take part in mini-golf, swimming and a kid’s play area. The St. Georges museum contains artifacts dating back to the 1880’s. Follow along the Winnipeg River passing through Silver Falls and Great Falls on #11 to the town of Lac du Bonnet. There you will find a beautiful landscaped walkway along the river as well as a large public pier and sand beach for swimming. The perfect spot for stretching the legs and the kids to run off some energy. Several options are available to complete your day trip. Consider having dinner in Lac du Bonnet or the Dunlop Tourist Hotel in Seven Sisters has a Friday night smorg. You can then return home the way you came or continue down #11 to Hwy 44, and turn towards Beausejour. Turn off at Hwy 12 and continue back to the beaches past Gull Lake. Whichever way you decide to return home you’ll be ready, after your day of adventure.

Cottage association issues challenge to help Save Our Lake

T

he Grindstone Cottage Owners Association is getting serious about the deteriorating water quality of Lake Winnipeg and wants to challenge those who live, work and play around Lake Winnipeg to join with them in the fight to save our lake. Challenge #1: Kick the phosphate habit at your home or cottage: Buy only phosphate-free detergents or eco-friendly fertilizers. To wash your dishes mix 250 ml/1 cup of borax with 125ml/half a cup of baking soda. It’s simple. It’s cheap. And it’s clean…in every meaning! Thanks to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation for this easy recipe. Why is this important to do? Because algae blooms come earlier and earlier each year, in part because more and more phosphates that feed the algae are finding their way into the rivers that feed our lake. There’s lots of information out there from loads of different sources, says Mo Tipples, the driving force behind the Save our Lake working group of the GCOA, “but what we want to do is lead by example. We want to provide some basic ‘here’s what you can do advice’ to individuals.  Challenge #2: The GCOA has pledged $500 to the Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium www.lakewinnipegresearch.org for 2006. Scientists are studying the watershed that feeds the lake, as well as conducting three surveys this summer on the research vessel Namao. To stretch the impact of the GCOA’s donation further, the association is challenging other cottage owners, cottage associations, and lake-side municipalities and businesses to match – or exceed – their pledge. Get together with your friends and neighbours, pool your money and make a difference with a collective donation! “The GCOA has 230 members who are cottagers in Grindstone Park (just west of Hecla) and we care for Lake Winnipeg as part of a bigger and valuable ecosystem whose health must become our personal business,” says Mo. The Save Our Lake working group is preparing for a summer of awareness-raising and public education. “We hope many individuals and groups will rise to our challenge so that we have good news to report at the end of the season.” Every person, group or business who accepts the GCOA’s challenge to donate much-needed funds to the Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium is a valuable link in the chain of public action that is necessary to help turn around the health of Lake Winnipeg. Mail your cheque to the LWRC, 62-2nd Avenue, PO Box 1289, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0. Watch for more information in the July issue of The Cottager magazine. The Save Our Lake group can be contacted through Mo Tipples at [email protected]. 80

Spring Burning Notice Manitoba Conservation would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the need to have a burning permit when burning grass or debris. The Wildfires Act requires that burning permits be obtained from April 1 to November 15. These permits are available at no charge from your local fire department or at any Manitoba Conservation District Office. We are encouraging you to burn in a safe manner to ensure a fire will not escape onto surrounding private or crown land. Manitoba Conservation reserves the right to cancel burning permits during periods of extreme fire hazard.
