OverDrive Media Console To borrow library eBooks and read them on your Android device (Samsung, Sony, etc.) you must download the OverDrive Media Console app from the Play Store. The OverDrive app is used to browse for library eBooks, check them out, or place a hold, as well as read the eBook. This guide will help you install and use the OverDrive Media Console app so that you can enjoy library eBooks!

Download the OverDrive Media Console App Open the Play Store and search for OverDrive Media Console. Once you have found the app, tap on the word Install to start the installation process.

Authorize the App with an OverDrive Account The first time that you open OverDrive, you must authorize it with an OverDrive account. The OverDrive account is a free account you must create, as it is what manages the copyrights for the eBooks (this is what keeps track of which library user has the right to borrow the eBook at a specific time). Tap on the OverDrive icon in the top left corner of the screen to open the navigation menu for the OverDrive app, then tap on Settings to access the Settings menu.

Tap on Authorize to begin the process create and sign in with an OverDrive account.

Create a Free OverDrive Account To create a free OverDrive Account, tap on the blue button to Use OverDrive Account.

Tap on Sign Up at the bottom of the page.

Enter your name, email address and a password, and then tap on Sign Up to finish creating your OverDrive account.

The OverDrive Media Console app is now authorized with an OverDrive account and you are ready to borrow eBooks!

Get eBooks Add a Library Tap the OverDrive logo to go back to the OverDrive menu. Then tap on Add a Library.

Type in the word Whitby in the search box and then tap Search.

Tap on Whitby Public Library to select it.

Tap in the star to make sure that the app remembers Whitby Public Library as a favourite. From now on the OverDrive menu will show Whitby Public Library as an option. Tap on Whitby Public Library to go to the library’s eBook collection.

Sign into eBook Account Tap on the Account icon (shaped like a head) to sign into your Whitby Public Library eBook account.

Enter your library barcode number and your PIN, which is the last 4 digits of your phone number. If you check the box just under the red Sign In button, it will prompt your device to remember your log in information so you don’t have to enter it every time. Then tap Sign In.

Find an eBook to Borrow Tap on the Menu icon to browse through the eBook collection by genre or collection. Tap in the Search box to search for a specific title or author.

Available eBooks All eBooks are represented by a cover image. In the top right corner of the cover image is a small book icon. If the book icon is grey the eBook is unavailable. If the book icon is black the eBook is available to be checked out.

Check Out an eBook Tap on the title of the eBook to read a description of the book. Then tap on Borrow to check out the eBook. If the eBook is unavailable, this button will say Place a Hold.

The eBook is then added to your library account bookshelf. Tap on Download to download the eBook to the OverDrive app. Once the book is downloaded, you will be able to read it even if you are not connected to the Internet.

Read Your eBook! Once downloaded, the eBook has been added to your OverDrive Bookshelf. Tap on the Menu icon to open the OverDrive menu and then tap on Bookshelf.

Tap on the cover of the eBook you wish to read.

Returning eBooks All library eBooks will automatically return to the library at the end of the borrowing period.

Return an eBook Early You can return an eBook early if you wish to. To return an eBook early, press and hold on the cover image of the eBook, then tap on Return.

Library Lending Policies Check Outs You may check out up to 12 eBook titles. The lending period is 21 days.

Returns and Renewals All titles will automatically return at the end of the lending period. Titles can be returned before they expire. Titles can be renewed if they are not on hold for another patron. Please note that when renewing titles, you must re-download the eBook to complete the renewal process.

Holds If an item is not available, it is possible to place a hold on the item. Up to 12 items can be placed on hold. When the title becomes available for you to check out, you will receive an email notification with a 72 hour period in which you must check out the eBook. To check out your available eBook, sign in to your Whitby Public Library eBook account and visit the Holds page. It is possible to turn on Automatic Holds. When Automatic Holds is on, eBook holds will automatically be checked out to you as soon as they become available. You will receive an email notification when this occurs.

New Library Card Numbers If you are issued a new library card and need to transfer your eBook checkouts and holds to your new account, please contact support at [email protected]. Be sure to include your new library card number, your old library card number and your email address.
