Borrowing Library eBooks using the Overdrive App for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch For devices running iOS 8 or later

You need to install the free OverDrive App to download EPUB eBooks.
1. Install and download the OverDrive App from the Apple App Store:
You can find the link to the store on the Home screen of your device. You may have to scroll across the screen to find the app. Your device needs to be connected to the wi-fi before you download the app.

Type “OverDrive” in the search box. Tap the “GET” button on the right side of the OverDrive app title. Tap the “INSTALL” button. Type in your Apple ID and password, then click “OK”. The app will start installing on your device. When the installation finishes, tap the “Open” button.

2. Create an OverDrive account a.
Tap the “SIGN UP” button on the screen to continue.
b. Fill out the online form (see the image below) by typing your Name, Email address and creating a password or choose one of the other sign up options above the form.

Tap the “Sign up” button to continue. The OverDrive app will open on your screen.

3. Access Northland’s OverDrive digital catalog a)
Tap inside the “Add a Library” box.
b)
Type Northland Public Library inside the Search box. Then press the Search button below it.
c)
Tap the “Northland Public Library” title in the list.

d)
Tap the “Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh” title within the “Library Systems” list.
Tapping the title will bookmark the website for your future use.
The OverDrive digital catalog should appear on your screen (see the image below.)

4. Find an EPUB eBook to borrow * The following instructions describe one of a few different ways to search the OverDrive digital catalog. a)
Tap the word “Search” to the right of the magnifying glass icon.

Tap the word “Advanced” under the magnifying glass icon.

If you would like to search for a specific title or author, type your search terms in the corresponding boxes (see the below image.) To conduct a general search, leave those boxes blank.

Tap to choose “EPUB eBook” from the “Formats” drop-down menu.

Tap to choose “Available now” from the “Availability” drop-down menu if you would like to find items that you can check out immediately. Otherwise, you can choose a different option.
f)
Tap the “Search” button at the bottom of the screen after you finish making your choices.
A page with EPUB eBooks will appear on your screen (see the image below).

A purple banner with the word “AVAILABLE” across the top of the ebook cover indicates that the item is available for immediate check out.
A white banner with the words “Wait List” across the top of the ebook cover indicates that all of the available copies of that item are checked out. You may click the “PLACE A HOLD” link to place a hold on any of these items.
5. Check out (“borrow”) an EPUB eBook a)
Tap the word “BORROW” at the bottom of the eBook cover.

If you are not already signed in, type your library card number in the white box. For extra convenience, tap the checkbox next to the “REMEMBER MY CARD NUMBER ON THIS DEVICE “option. Then tap the “SIGN IN” button below it.
c)
Tap the set of books icon to view your checked out items on your Loans page.

6. Download the eBook to the OverDrive app a)
Tap the “CHOOSE A FORMAT” drop-down menu. Then tap EPUB eBook.
b)
Tap the “Add to App” button.
Your eBook should begin to download immediately.

Tap the OverDrive app Home menu button
in the top left corner of your screen.

Tap the “BOOKSHELF” option in the Home menu.

Tap the eBook cover to open it on your screen.

OverDrive app reading features After you open your eBook, you can tap in the middle of your device screen to access the following features:
Access the OverDrive Home menu View the Table of Contents
Tap in the upper right corner of the page to add a bookmark.
Adjust screen brightness and lighting
Move Forward or Backward
Adjust Page Setupcolumns, text alignment, line spacing, margins, etc.
Adjust font size and type

How to return an eBook early:
1. Swipe across your screen from left to right OR tap the Home menu icon top left corner of the screen. Then tap the “Bookshelf” option.

2. Press and hold your finger on the eBook cover for about two seconds. Tap the “Return to Library” option.
c) Tap the “Return” button to complete the process.
Returning an eBook brings it back to the library collection, as well as removes it from your device.

How to search for additional titles:
a)
Return to your Bookshelf screen by tapping the Home menu icon corner of the screen. Then tap the “Bookshelf” option.

The main OverDrive catalog page appears on your screen (see the image below). Tap on the word “Search” to begin your search for another item.
