Borrowing NWRLS eBooks with your Nook and other EPUB or PDF compatible devices No Software to download! What you will need: • A Nook or other EPUB compatible device • A computer to checkout and download your eBook with Adobe Digital Editions software installed • A USB cable • Your NWRLS library card number and PIN • NookHD/Nook HD+ can complete the process wirelessly through the device, and do not require the use of a computer. NWRLS offers a collection of downloadable electronic books that are compatible with the Barnes and Noble Nook and other EPUB or PDF compatible devices. The Kindle eReader is also supported (see separate Kindle instructions). eBooks are hosted on the OverDrive platform. Follow the steps below to download your eBook to a computer, then transfer the eBook to your Nook via a USB cable.

Download and Install Adobe Digital Editions You must have free Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 software installed on your computer in order to download and transfer an eBook to your Nook or other EPUB or PDF compatible eReader. Adobe Digital Editions is available as a free download from their website, http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/. There is also a link in the “Getting Started” section of the OverDrive website. The software allows you to download and transfer digital content in the industry standard eBook formats PDF and EPUB. When you install Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 you are prompted to authorize and activate your computer in order to read protected items and transfer them to other computers and portable devices. You must have an Adobe ID to authorize your computer, and you are prompted to get one at no charge during the installation. Important Notes: a. If you want to transfer eBooks from your computer to a portable device, both the device and the computer must be authorized with the same Adobe ID. (All computers, laptops, eReaders, etc. should use the same Adobe ID). b. If you do not get your no-charge Adobe ID when you install Adobe Digital Editions, you can create an Adobe account and get an Adobe ID at the Adobe Sign-In Page, https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/index.cfm.

Step 1: Find and check out an eBook from our website. To start, visit our digital collection at www.nwrls.com Books, Etc. eBooks OverDrive Search for a particular title, author or subject using the search box, or browse by genre or format. When using the search box, type in your search term(s), then click the magnifying glass to perform your search.

When you find the eBook you want, click the book cover. Please note the upper right corner of each title shows whether the book is an eBook (book icon) or an Audiobook (headphones icon). If the icon is gray in color the item is currently checked out.

Step 2: Download and Transfer your eBook Click the “Borrow” button.

If you are not signed in you will be prompted to do so. Type your 14 digit library card number (found on the back of your library card) and your PIN. If you do not know your PIN or have any difficulty signing in please contact your local library. Some titles have the option of reading the eBook online, without downloading. You do this using OverDrive Read which allows you to read the book while online via your internet browser. Do this by clicking the “Read in your browser” button. Not all browsers are compatible.

If you want to read the book on your computer offline, or download and transfer to your Nook or other EPUB compatible eReader, click the “Download” button and select the appropriate format. Then click Confirm & Download.

Click “Open.” If your computer already has Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 installed, it should automatically launch and display your eBook.

3

The eBook is now saved to your computer via the Adobe Digital Editions software. You can read it on your computer now but if you want to transfer to a compatible eReader click the “Library View” button.

Plug in your eReader. After your computer recognizes that you have plugged-in your Nook, a small Nook icon will appear. Click and drag the book you want to transfer to the Nook icon until the red circle turns green, then “drop” the book. Your eBook is now on your Nook.

Please note there is a glitch in Adobe Digital Editions 2.0. Although the banner across the book cover shows an expiration date of 1 week, when you view the item info screen (right click on the book and select item info from the pull down menu) you can confirm that the actual due date is two weeks from the date of checkout. OverDrive eBooks and Audiobooks have a two week loan period. 4

To return an eBook early: Your eBook will automatically be returned when the loan period expires, however if you wish to return an eBook early you may do so through Adobe Digital Editions. We encourage this since it will allow the next person to borrow it sooner plus is will allow you to check out another item if you have reached your checkout limit. ☺

Right click on the book. The Item Options menu will appear. Click “Return Borrowed Item.” A dialog box will appear. Click “Return” to confirm you would like to return the book. The book is no longer checked out to you, and is available for another person to borrow. It will also be removed from Adobe Digital Editions.
