Annual Report

As you can see from the financials presented in these pages, Marshall is in fine fiscal health. We strive to offer a top-notch program within the economic realities present in our smaller market in northern Minnesota. We remain frugal in our efforts to keep the school tuition well below those charged at similar independent schools in the Twin Cities. At the same time, we allocate a healthy portion of our budget to financial aid, recognizing that a Marshall education should not be limited to only those who can afford to pay full tuition. We believe our community is stronger with a healthy mix of socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity. As is the case in other independent schools, tuition at Marshall provides only a portion of the costs to operate the school. Much of the innovation in the Marshall program is made possible through additional contributions of trustees, faculty and staff, parents, alumni, and long-time friends of the school. This giving provides the extra programming that so many of our students will remember as the defining moments of their school experiences. You will also find the most recent Marshall Strategic Plan placed into the pages of this Annual Report. This plan was approved by our Board of Trustees in May 2011 and provides a vision for the next three years at Marshall School. There are bold initiatives present in this plan, and achieving these goals will require much hard work.

Dear Friends of Marshall School, We are delighted to share with you our 2010-2011 Annual Report. We had much to celebrate last year. Many of our initiatives and programs would not be possible without the dedication and support of so many in our community.

We believe our students are worth it. Furthermore, we believe that the Northland deserves strong educational options for our children, and that includes an innovative and thriving independent school. A heartfelt thanks to everybody who contributed to make 2010-2011 such a wonderful year. We are grateful for your support. Sincerely,

Michael Ehrhardt, Ed.D Head of School

FUND-A-NEED

Advances Instruction With Introduction of Smart Boards “I can’t imagine not having one!”

M

arshall teachers echo these words in praise of the new Smart Boards— electronic, interactive white boards. Thanks to the 2010 Fund-a-Need, Marshall’s classrooms have been revolutionized by this technological teaching tool. The Smart Board projects presentations and videos while enabling students and faculty to write on the screen and digitally navigate the system like a computer. Smart Boards are changing the face of instruction. They have increased efficiency and instructional time on task; augmented instruction by enabling multi-media presentations of information; enhanced active student interaction with material; and served as a valuable communication tool. Middle School teacher Wanda Birmbaum credits the Smart Board for her efficiency in preparing for instruction and transitioning smoothly through material. She has witnessed an increase in student participation as students respond to material on the Board and create

their own presentations. “We are speaking their language,” reports Birmbaum. “They have an intuitive sense of how to operate the Smart Board and feel at home navigating it.” Amazing creations emerge from the active exchange of ideas and acquisition of knowledge through this interactive tool. Ann Castle, Middle School Math teacher, can’t fathom teaching without it. Castle and students solve equations on the board and Castle stores the lessons for later reference. Three dimensional depictions of abstract concepts are portrayed on the Smart Board, providing a newfound visual clarity. Class notes are saved and shared on teachers’ websites, immediately available to students and parents. Thank you to the contributors to the 2010 Fund-a-Need for supplying Smart Boards in many of our classrooms, enabling teachers and students to maximize instructional opportunity.

Building a Community

Rich With Human Experience

M

arshall’s greatest assets are its students, past and present. We celebrate, daily, the eclectic body of students who walk our halls, play on our fields, sing, act and debate on our stages, and create digital and artistic magic. Stories abound of individuals, lonely in their brilliance, finding a place at Marshall where they belong and matter. Marshall provides an environment for kids to be different and find others with similar passions, building meaningful relationships and growing together. The diversity of the student body is directly affected by the accessibility of the Marshall experience. Forty percent of Marshall’s students receive financial aid. We salute the Big Circle Fund, the endowed funds, and the many donors who support financial aid at Marshall, enabling us to foster a community rich in human experience. While these funds directly assist students who receive the financial aid, the entire community benefits from the unique students who join the community as a result. One student describes his transformation from a lonely introvert to an active member of an extracurricular club, “Recomp (gaming club) changed my (antisocial) perspective. When I joined the club, I met and played with a variety

of people from a variety of backgrounds and mentalities, and this changed me. It didn’t happen overnight, but gradually over the years. I started to open up more as I met person after person and found that I was okay with them, and even more to my surprise, they were okay with me.” While this student did not receive financial aid, those near him did, and they made a positive and permanent mark on his spirit. One recipient of assistance from the Big Circle Fund describes his Marshall experience as a “change for the better.” He describes the initial shock and sense of betrayal felt when his father announced his transfer from a public high school to Marshall. He tracks his path to becoming a strong leader and credits the transition to Marshall for his social and

emotional development. “I was once against the idea of going to Marshall, but now (Marshall) has helped me to become a leader and it has sharpened my people skills. The change was right for me.” Another fund recipient credits his involvement in six Marshall clubs with a transformation from being a shy kid to an outgoing leader, “As a result of this immersion into my experience, I make more friends, have a tendency to involve myself more in life, and appreciate school as a place to enjoy oneself. These each, in turn, have even more influences in my life.” For these stories and more, we give thanks for the generous contributions of the funders who support Marshall’s financial aid program, thereby enriching the lives of its recipients and the entire community at large.

Rosemary Feriancek: Legacy Gift in Celebration of a Grandchild

Marshall School thanks the Feriancek family for their generous Legacy Gift in celebration of JD’s mother and Cole’s grandmother, Rosemary Feriancek (1939-2011). Family, education, and community involvement were Rosemary Feriancek’s defining values. She was a teacher for 40 years at the Harrison School in Brainerd, Minnesota, an advocate for the advancement of education, a supporter of the local community college and her grandson’s greatest fan. During her final days, she desired to leave a gift to Marshall School to benefit her grandson’s educational community. Appreciating that education extends beyond the walls of the classroom, and character education happens in athletics, the family targeted Marshall’s basketball teams as the recipient of their generous gift. Thanks to the Feriancek Legacy Gift, the Marshall basketball program joins the ranks of collegiate and professional teams using an innovative training tool called “The Gun” to maximize shooting practice and build endurance. A massive net extends below the hoop, rebounding and filtering the ball into a machine (the Gun), which then passes the ball to the shooter. It counts and tracks each shot for accuracy and location. Through the summer and fall, Eric Miklausich, Marshall’s

senior center, took over 16,000 shots. When asked about the impact of the Gun on his game, Eric replied, “My game is already better. My shooting stamina has increased. I can put up 1,000 shots in a third of the time it took me before. I can come in at any time of day to shoot. It’s awesome!” The Gun also provides a website where students can track total shots taken and their accuracy based on shooting location. In addition to two shooting Guns, the gift enabled the Athletic Department to erect a screen in the gymnasium separating the upper court from the lower court, replacing the ancient wooden and metal doors. The screen proudly displays Marshall’s logo and modernizes the gymnasium’s appearance, as well as increases athlete safety. The purchase of moveable bleachers enables basketball practices and games to run on the upper court simultaneously with games on the lower court. We extend a special thank you to the Feriancek family for their support of Marshall School. Marshall’s basketball players look to honor Rosemary Feriarcek in their commitment to hard work, sportsmanship, and excellence.

Annual Report

The mission of Marshall School is to educate students to become global citizens who demonstrate strong academic habits, respect, compassion, integrity, self-discipline, and intellectual curiosity.

Student Art Collection We are thrilled to announce the inauguration of a permanent Marshall School Art Collection comprised exclusively of student work. In May of 2011, after careful review, two pieces were selected to launch the collection. The first piece is an abstract painting by Losa Jung (’11). The second is a vase by Killian McKee (’11).

Each year, students will receive the opportunity to submit work to a panel of reviewers for selection. The winners will be announced at the National Arts Honor Society banquet in the spring. The collection serves as another showcase of our students’ extraordinary talents.

Annual Giving

Current Endowed Funds

Gifts to the Annual Fund provide the extra margin of excellence that makes the Hilltopper experience the best it can be for our students. Annual Gifts are comprised of the Hilltopper Fund and the Big Circle Fund.

Marshall School is grateful for the generosity of our Hilltopper community. Alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends of the school have established and provided support to these endowed funds to provide need-based financial aid to students and their families.

Hilltopper Fund Contributions to the Hilltopper Fund provide direct support to Marshall’s students, faculty, and programs for the current year. Big Circle Fund Contributions to the Big Circle Fund provide need-based financial aid to talented, qualified students who otherwise could not afford tuition.

Benedictine Community Scholarship Fund As part of Marshall School’s Our Second Century Campaign, Duluth’s Benedictine Community established this need-based scholarship for upper-school students and their families. Members of the Benedictine Community guided the school for many years when it was known as the Duluth Cathedral High School. George Feiro Scholarship George Feiro was responsible for the operation of the school facility from the time the school was built in 1963 until he died suddenly in 1978. John Sorman, Frank Napoli, and a few Benedictine Sisters who taught at the school in the late 1960s and early 1970s initiated the endowment fund. LaVerne M. Fryberger Scholarship An anonymous friend of the school established this scholarship to honor Mrs. Fryberger who was a member of the founding board and a constant supporter of the school until her death in 2002. Katharine J. Gibson Fund The Katharine J. Gibson Fund was established in 2010 as a bequest. This gift will support the

Marshall School endowment, providing lasting support for financial aid, faculty professional development, academics, and capital projects. Katherine Gibson’s gift to the school was made possible by the strong support of a long-time friend of the Hilltoppers. Alfred Gregoire Scholarship Alfred Gregoire accumulated wealth in his years of working the Great Lakes boats. His inclination to support the school was inspired by the students he came to know through the Cathedral Community Commitment Program. Mr. Gregoire asked that the fund be used to “support scholarships for needy students of good character.” MARSHALL Hilltopper Alumni Scholarship Fund Contributions from Hilltopper alumni, family, and friends support this fund. Proceeds are used to provide financial aid to current and future Hilltopper students. Syl Laskin Scholarship Fund Syl Laskin was a Minnesota Power executive and trustee of the school. Many generous friends of Mr. Laskin established this fund to honor him and his commitment to Marshall School.

The fund is designated for use by families from the Lincoln Park or West Duluth areas of the community. Irene Oswald Scholarship Fund Mr. and Mrs. Oswald had no children of their own but helped a number of their nieces and nephews with tuition at the school. This scholarship was established with a gift from Mrs. Oswald’s estate to help needy students. It is awarded to a sophomore or junior who displays initiative, reliability, and volunteerism and has demonstrated that he or she is taking

full advantage of the opportunities offered at the school. This scholarship is funded with the proceeds from the annual Frank Napoli Spaghetti Dinner. It was Mrs. Peterson’s desire to give a gift to education by assisting a Marshall student in need of financial aid. The William S. Pollard Scholarship Fund This scholarship is intended for a Marshall student with a passion for foreign language. Dr. William S. Pollard (1925-2003) was a gifted neurosurgeon in the Duluth/Superior community for more than 40 years. His belief that “knowledge is the finest gift one could give himself or another” has been the founding principle for this scholarship, established in his memory in 2008. Scholtes established this scholarship in honor of her sister, Lucia, and brother-in-law, Eugene, who was an alumnus of Cathedral High School. Rob and Dianne Link endowed this fund to provide support for students who have financial hardship, academic potential, a strong commitment to and involvement in the community, church, and other organizations.
