The City of Potsdam With its small city center and not even 200.000 inhabitants, Potsdam is often overshadowed by Berlin, the capitol of Germany that is adjacent to Potsdam in the Northeast. However, Potsdam was the city, where the Kings of Prussia built their palaces and parks and left the city many sights worth visiting.

Top 10 Sights in Potsdam

Sanssouci Palace and Park

1

The rococo Palace, the former summer residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, is the most famous sight of Potsdam. It is located in the West of the city and inside a large park, which is also worth a visit.

Orangery Palace

2

The Palace is north of the Sanssouci park, but just on the other side of the street that surrounds the park. It is a nice walk (about 1km) from the Sanssouci Palace through the park to the Orangery.

14

New Palace

3 1

4 1

The New Palace was built under Frederick the Great too and can be found inside the Sanssouci park, but on the west side. It would be a 2km walk through the park starting at the Sanssouci Palace. The Old Market Square into the city center The Market is a must-see sight for tourists. It is surrounded by the St.Nicholas' Church, the rebuilt Potsdam City Palace (since 2014 the New Parliament House) and the Old Town Hall (since 2012 the Potsdam Museum). New Garden with the Marmorpalais

5

That is another park in the Northeast of Potsdam, directly at the lake “Heiliger See”. The Marmorpalais is located in its middle with a great view over the lake.

1

Cecilienhof Palace

6

The Cecilienhof Palace was the location for the Potsdam Conference. At this Conference, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States decided about their future plans for Indochina and Europe after the Second World War.

1

15

The former Russian colony “Alexandrowka”

7

The colony was built as a monument for the friendship between the King of Prussia and the Tsar of Russia. The houses look like Russian block houses and were donated to the members of a Russian choir living in Potsdam. St. Peter and Paul Church

8

The Catholic Church is a huge building just 240m away from the NH Voltaire Hotel. The impressive inside space is designed in a rococo and baroque style. It is open to the public on Tuesday to Saturday, 4pm to 6pm. The Luisenplatz with the Brandenburg Gate

9

The Place “Luisenplatz” is the western end of the pedestrian area and shopping street Brandenburger Straße. The grand gate is the former town gate and freestanding since the town wall was demolished in 1900.

The Dutch Quarter

10 00 0

The Dutch Quarter in Potsdam is Europe’s largest collection of Dutch-style houses outside the Netherlands. There are many little cafés, restaurants and shops located into the red brick buildings.
