An Amazing Place 2008-2009 ANNUAL REPORT

Editor’s note: In 2008 and 2009, staff members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley created personal “storylines” to tell others about their day-to-day experiences and impressions working at the Club. We believe the following storyline says it all.

My Name is Loris Damerow I work at an amazing place in the Fox Valley. It is a place for kids, for youth. Everything we do is geared towards helping kids be kids. This includes having fun, learning, being responsible, caring, and becoming good citizens. The place where I work is not a school, although we work with teachers and provide tutoring and technology support. It is not a correction facility, even though we work with the police. It is not a mental health facility, even though there is a counselor here. It is not a city park, although there is lots of recreation going on. I work at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley … it’s a pretty amazing place. It is a unique setting, for kids and teens … especially those who need us most. What kind of kid might need us? Well … kids whose parents leave for work, before it’s time for school. There are hundreds of children who have to be up and dressed and out the door at an early hour. Where do they go?

They go to this amazing place in downtown Appleton or right at their school (there are six school-based locations). When they get there, they might find Eric, bright and early, tossing the ball around in the gym, or Kristin, in the library, helping someone finish homework. What other kind of child might need us? Michelle, a teen who is afraid and angry. She has left home and is on the roam, trying to figure out her next move.

She doesn’t know where to go; she just knows that home is painful; her father and his girlfriend argue all the time … drugs are passed around. Leah, one of the outreach workers from this amazing place where I work, has found where Michelle stashed her blanket and backpack in a park and will bring her food and supplies, and will listen to her. She will provide support, resources, and will do her best to help get Michelle off the street.

His Dad is gone.

Then there is Will. He is skipping school. Things are not so great at his home, either. His Dad is gone. His mom just lost her job. He has to take care of his younger brothers. He just can’t concentrate, and besides, he is flunking math. What good is school, anyway? Will has just been picked up by the Police school liaison officer and has been brought to the amazing place where I work. Kayla, one of our truancy counselors, greets him. Kayla clearly and firmly outlines what is required of Will. Kayla will work with Mom and Will and keep him on track for a minimum of three months, longer if necessary. Kayla wants Will to stay in school. She cares.

His mom just lost her job.

It is 3:30 p.m. now, and hundreds of kids come pouring into the afterschool programs at this amazing place. Kids could go home, but they’d rather do neat things with other kids. Some kids don’t want to go home to an empty house. Some have no other options. Kids here play basketball, trivia, board games, read stories, play table games, gather in small groups, do art projects, and tell jokes, but first, they go to Power Hour. All over town, in all seven sites, hundreds of kids are learning how to be a kid and get their homework done. Besides spelling, they are learning to be responsible, they are learning that someone cares. Mary is 11. She is quiet and has a learning disability. Her mother committed suicide a year ago. Before that, Dad took off. Mary can’t remember to bring home the right books from school. Each day, someone from the Club who she knows and trusts, goes over her assignments with her. And when she needs it, Mary can see Kathi, our youth and family counselor. Mary can sit in Kathi’s office and talk or cry about what it’s like to live with Grandma now, or sort out what happened with Dad. Maybe her nightmares will not be so bad.

Mary can sit in Kathi’s office and talk or cry about what it’s like to live with Grandma

Kathi is a good listener and suggests that Mary, Grandma and Grandpa and the rest of the kids at home would benefit from being with other families that are grieving. Perhaps Mary wouldn’t feel so different. So they come to our program night for grieving families. That’s where I come in, at this amazing place where I work, that’s the part that I do; talking with kids and grown ups who have a loss, a death in the family. We gather once a month, share a meal, and do memorial activities and talk about it. I hear things like, “I miss my Dad.” “My heart felt like a smashed pot.” “When I’m sad, I cry, but when I’m done, I feel better.”

The volunteers who also come to help the kids at this amazing place where I work say things like, “I feel as though I’ve made a difference. I get a lot of satisfaction from making a good experience for the kids.” Why make a good experience for the kids? Because that is our mission: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. It’s hard to believe that throughout our community, 800 kids a day are served by this amazing place. A place that costs members only $15 a year. Not $15 a day. Not $15 an hour. But $15 a year. Now, that is some kind of club. Actually, it is a Club. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley. The Club makes it happen for Michelle and Will and Mary and 12,000 other kids every year who live in the Fox Valley. That’s the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley. It’s a pretty amazing place.

Loris Damerow Director Center for Grieving Children

Dear Friends, Ten years – a short time and a long time, all at the same time. We celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley in 2008 – a time that seems to have flown by quickly, but also a time when tens of thousands of children and youth, those who have needed the Club most, have been served through hundreds of programs and services – that makes it also feel like its been a long time. But much less important really than the time, is the recognition for all of us at the Boys & Girls Clubs that this community deserves a great deal of thanks for having made the Club a reality. It’s another example out of many of the spirit with which this community rises to meet its needs and take care of one another. This community believes in itself and in its future – dare we say it hopes for a better day everyday and, most importantly, is willing to do what it takes to get there. On behalf of all of us at the Boys & Girls Clubs, especially on behalf of all those young lives we’ve been so happy and privileged to guide and nurture, thank you for helping us inspire and enable our community’s youth to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Thank you for 10 great years and for sticking with us as we look forward to an even greater next decade of service. Warmest a est Regards, ega ds,
