LECTIONARY TEXTS FOR TODAY’S CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you are not a communicant and would like to receive a blessing, please inform the clergy by bringing this leaflet to the Altar Rail.

COLLECT FOR THE DAY O God, the strength of all them that put their trust in thee, mercifully accept our prayers; and because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without thee, grant us the help of thy grace, that in keeping of thy commandments we may please thee, both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

NEW TESTAMENT READING – 2 Corinthians 4: 13 - 5: 1 Just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture - ‘I believed, and so I spoke’—we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

GOSPEL READING – Mark 3: 20-35 The Holy Gospel is written in the 3rd chapter of the Gospel according to Mark, beginning at the 20th verse.

The crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone out of his mind.’ And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.’ And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no

one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. ‘Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin’— for they had said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’ Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.’ And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord.

MOTET: O sacrum convivium O sacrum convivium in quo Christus sumitur, recolitur memoria Passionis eius, mens impletur gratia, et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur. Alleluia. O sacred and holy Banquet, wherein Christ is received; and we recount the memory of his bitter Passion, and the mind is filled with his heavenly grace, and the pledge of everlasting life is given. Alleluia. Music: Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992)

In these our days so perilous, Lord, peace in mercy send us; No God but thee can fight for us, No God but thee defend us; Thou our only God and Saviour. Text: Martin Luther (1483-1586) Music: Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

EVENSONG ANTHEM TEXT: Beatus vir Beatus vir qui timet Dominum: in mandatis ejus volet nimis. Potens in terra erit semen ejus; generatio rectorum benedicetur. Gloria et divitiae in domo ejus: et justitia ejus manet in saeculum saeculi. Dispersit, dedit pauperibus; justitia ejus manet in saeculum saeculi: cornu ejus exaltabitur in gloria. Peccator videbit, et irascetur; dentibus suis fremet et tabescet: desiderium peccatorum peribit. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he hath great delight in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the faithful shall be blessed. Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever. Unto the godly there ariseth up light in the darkness: he is merciful, loving, and righteous. A good man is merciful, and lendeth: and will guide his words with discretion. For he shall never be moved: and the righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance. He will not be afraid of any evil tidings: for his heart standeth fast, and believeth in the Lord. His heart is established, and will not shrink: until he see his desire upon his enemies. He hath dispersed abroad, and given to the poor: and his righteousness remaineth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour. The ungodly shall see it, and it shall grieve him: he shall gnash with his teeth, and consume away; the desire of the ungodly shall perish. Text: Psalm 112 Music: Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)

Sponsor a pipe for Father’s Day! The Cathedral organ is being dismantled in August 2015 before the building works start. Once dismantled, we need to carry out a much-needed renovation and enhancement to the instrument, which has been used daily for the last 50 years and has received little attention due to the

lack of funds. The organ plays a key role in delivering inspiring music in worship, events, concerts and our programme of first-class music education for local school children. You can help by sponsoring an organ pipe or stop for your father this Father’s Day. There are a range of pipes and stops at prices to suit everyone. Sponsors’ names will be recorded in the MAKE YOUR MARK Manuscript. Organ stops are available from various prices starting from £500. Pipe’s are available as follows: 32ft pipe - £250; 16ft pipe - £100; 8ft pipe - £50; 4ft pipe - £15; 2ft pipe £5. If you would like to sponsor a pipe or stop please contact [email protected] or www.guildford-cathedral.org/makeyourmark or 01483 547884. Join the People’s Cathedral Project - Saturday 11 July from 10am: An exciting and FREE oral history training session in the Chapter House, courtesy of support received from the Heritage Lottery Fund. We will give you the skills to interview, record and transcribe the memories of those involved in the construction and early days of Guildford Cathedral. Refreshments and lunch will be provided and travel expenses reimbursed. Please contact Helen Ellis at [email protected] or call 01483 547888 to book your place.

No expertise required! And no regular commitment expected.the more volunteers we have, the less you will be needed! Please email Gill Thorpe, The Cathedral’s Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected] or Helen Warren at [email protected], or speak to us during your next cup of coffee! Thank you.
