Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Ash Wednesday begins the 40-day penance in the Catholic church. It seems, however, that the word "repent" or "asce cism" disappeared from the everyday vocabulary of today's believers. Even in today's transla ons of the Bible we find the word "conversion", where formerly there was talk of "repentance". The first call of Jesus to repent, transmi ed by the Gospel of Mark, in former transla ons read: "Do penance, and believe in the gospel." Undoubtedly, the word "repentance" is loaded with medieval prac ces, o en showing a distor on of authen c Chris an piety. Can the word "repentance" righ ully be replaced by the word "conversion" in the current day? The true meaning penance however lies in the inner transforma on of human life a tude. The concept of "conversion" is typical of the Bible. It is expressed using the Hebrew term for "return". Conversion is the turning point in a certain direc on: at some point in our lives we stop and return back - to God. In the Gospel of Mark we hear the call of Jesus: "The me is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” In the second speech of Peter in the Acts of the Apostles, we find a similar appeal: "Therefore repent and turn back, that your sins may be wiped out ". The call to conversion is fulfilled by a call to repentance. In a sense the call remains the same: the need for a change of our mentality, the joy of returning to God and faith in the good news. Marthe Robin repented every Friday for 50 years .Not ea ng, not drinking, not sleeping, fed only the Eucharist. Devoted en rely to Christ took on the s gmata. Only with such great asce cism, can such a beau ful prayer be born: "O Jesus! Let my heart be the true altar of Your Love, and let my tongue always preach Your Mercy! Kindly, please, sanc fy all my words, all my ac ons, all my inten ons, all my desires! Be a true treasure for my whole soul. This I entrust to you.". Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele, Środa Popielcowa rozpoczyna w Kościele okres 40dniowej pokuty. Wydaje się jednak, że słowa „pokuta” czy „asceza” zniknęły z codziennego słownika ludzi wierzących. Dzisiaj nawet w tłumaczeniach biblijnych spotykamy słowo „nawrócenie”, tam gdzie dawniej mówiono o „pokucie”. Pierwsze wezwanie Jezusa, przekazane przez Ewangelię św. Marka, w dawnych przekładach brzmiało: „Czyńcie pokutę i wierzcie w Ewangelię”. Niewątpliwie słowo „pokuta” obciążone jest średniowiecznymi praktykami, często ukazującymi w krzywym zwierciadle autentyczną pobożność chrześcijańską. Może zatem słusznie zastąpiło je wyrażeniem „nawrócenie”. Istota pokuty tkwi przecież w wewnętrznej przemianie postawy życiowej człowieka. Pojęcie „nawrócenia” jest typowe dla Biblii. Wyraża się je za pomocą hebrajskiego terminu oznaczającego „powrót”. Nawrócenie to zwrot w pewnym kierunku: w jakimś momencie naszego życia zatrzymujemy się i wracamy z powrotem - do Boga. W Ewangelii św. Marka słyszymy dziś wciąż aktualne wezwanie Jezusa: „Czas się wypełnił i bliskie jest królestwo Boże. Nawracajcie się i wierzcie w Ewangelię”. Zaś w Dziejach Apostolskich (3,19 - druga mowa Piotra) spotykamy podobny apel: „Pokutujcie więc i nawróćcie się, aby grzechy wasze zostały zgładzone”. Wezwanie do nawrócenia uzupełnia wezwaniem do pokuty. Sens apelu pozostaje taki sam: potrzeba zmiany mentalności, radości powrotu do Boga i wiary w Dobrą Nowinę. Wielka pokutnica i mistyczka naszych czasów Marta Robin przez 50 lat każdego piątku przeżywała Mękę Pańską. Nie jadła, nie piła, nie spała, żywiła się wyłącznie Eucharys ą. Oddana bez reszty Chrystusowi przyjęła w swoim ciele stygmaty. Tylko z tak wielkiej ascezy może zrodzić się tak piękna modlitwa: „O Jezu! Niech moje serce będzie prawdziwie ołtarzem Twej Miłości i niech mój język zawsze głosi Twoje Miłosierdzie! Zechciej, błagam, uświęcić wszystkie moje słowa, wszystkie moje czyny, wszystkie moje intencje, wszystkie moje pragnienia! Bądź prawdziwie Skarbem dla mojej duszy i jej Wszystkim. Parish Transforma on, the process we began back in February 2014 to renew our parish’s sense of mission, con nues to unfold, focusing on the building blocks of Catechesis, Communio (a profound sense of community), and Missionary Spirit. In keeping with the Catechesis building block, the adult ed team is now pulling together their Faith for All Seasons program for Summer of 2015. Also in keeping with the Catchesis building block, our Children’s Liturgy of the Word ini a ve began at the 10:30 Mass on Sunday, 2/1/2015 and will con nue at the 10:30 Mass on Sunday, 3/1 (here, smaller children are invited to leave Mass when the readings begin to hear age-appropriate version of the Scriptures in another room led by Sister Kinga and her catechists; the children then return to rejoin their families following the homily for the remainder of the Mass). FESTIVAL OF FORGIVNESS — February 27-28 Pope Francis has described his vision of the Church as a field hospital in the middle of a terribly wounded world. During Lent 2015, the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago wants to bring the medicine of mercy not only to the Catholic faithful but also to anyone who stands in need of healing and forgiveness. Across two days February 27 and February 28, the Church in Chicago will offer special opportuni es for the celebraon of the Sacrament of Penance and for prayers of healing. But such matters are periphery on this First Sunday of Lent. Such matters are periphery all the time, true, but during these six weeks especially, the Church asks us to have a desert experience, to book some serious God-time. The Great Sunday will be here before we know it, so now is the time to really contemplate the cross. Still. Something happened to me two Mondays ago-when these six weeks had not yet begun--that may help me more than anything to have what we all hope to have: a good Lent. In an cipa on of spending some me this Lenten season in Eucharis c adora on, I found a church in Elk Grove Village not far from my work place that has EA every Monday. I learned about Queen of the Rosary church in December when I went there with my friend Daisy for the noon Immaculate Concep on Mass. I had it in my head to check QOTR out for adora on right a er the first of the year, but I had it in my head to put the tree stand and skirt away then, too. Hey. I’ve been busy. But I did make it there two Mondays ago, and guess who I saw? Nobody. Christ was present, certainly, in the monstrance posi oned on the altar and flanked by two lighted candles. But I was the only person in church. I walked up to Jesus, sat down, and said hello. Si ng there in that big church, in the quiet, on a gray, early February day, I had my own li le pre-Lenten desert experience. And here’s what I pondered: where is everybody? Mind you, I cast the first stone at no one but myself. Even when I was s ll working in Skokie, IL and my home parish wasn’t far away, I rarely made their Tuesday adora on. I had ample opportunity--for years--to do what I did two Mondays ago: just walk up to Jesus, sit down, and say hello. But I didn’t. So as I sat there, I thought of all the people in Skokie, Elk Grove Village, Chicago, and across the globe who mean well, but don’t follow through. Through Eucharis c adora on or prayer in general, God waits for us to stop by, and many of us intend to... Lent asks us to take a more proac ve approach to finding some God- me through prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving. These are Lent’s calling cards, in fact. But how o en do we accept them? At least, how o en do I accept them? I needed to get back to work that Monday two Monday’s back, so I told Jesus goodbye and headed out. But you know what? There was s ll nobody there. The church was s ll empty, and since I couldn’t bring myself to leave our Lord alone in that big space, I sat down again in a pew, talked with Jesus some more, and waited for someone else to come in and do the same. And when someone did shortly therea er, I le . Had I told Daisy all of this, she would have said it was my Catholic guilt ac ng up again. Maybe, but in that instant, I sensed it was the right thing. If we accept Lent’s calling cards--if we intend to, and actually do (even a li le)--it will be the right thing, too. Here’s to a good Lent.

INFORMACJE O SAKRAMENTACH ŚWI ĘTYCH

Bap sms… We celebrate Bap sms in the English language on the first and third Sundays and in the Polish language on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Parents must par cipate in a Bap smal prepara on mee ng before a date can be scheduled. To register for a mee ng call the rectory secretary. Weddings… The Archdiocese of Chicago requires arrangements for weddings be made four months in advance. We at St. Constance strongly recommend at least six months before the date of marriage. You will need to meet with our deacon / priest before any other arrangements are made. Call the rectory for an appointment. Sacrament of the Sick… Call the Rectory to make arrangements for a priest. Please do not wait un l the person is unconscious or near death. Communion Calls… If you or someone you love are ill or home bound and would like to receive Communion, call the rectory to make arrangements for regular visits.

Chrzty… Sakrament Chrztu Świętego jest udzielany w języku angielskim i polskim. Chrzty w języku angielskim są w pierwszą i trzecią niedzielę, a w języku polskim w drugą i czwartą niedzielę każdego miesiąca. Rodzice są zobowiązani do wzięcia udziału w spotkaniu przygotowującym do tego sakramentu przed planowaną datą chrztu dziecka. Prosimy o skontaktowanie się z biurem parafialnym, aby zgłosić dziecko do chrztu. Sakrament Małżeństwa… Archidiecezja Chicago zaleca, aby osoby, które planują zawarcie sakramentu małżeństwa zgłosiły się do biura parafialnego co najmniej cztery miesiące przed datą ślubu. Chcielibyśmy i usilnie zalecamy, aby w naszej parafii okres przygotowania trwać sześć miesięcy. Prosimy, abyście najpierw ustalili termin w kościele, a następnie w innych miejscach. Zapraszamy więc do naszego biura parafialnego najwcześniej jak tylko jest to możliwe . Sakrament Namaszczenia Chorych… Prosimy o kontakt z księdzem w celu ustalenia terminu przyjęcia tego sakramentu. Przypominamy, że nie wolno zwlekać z udzieleniem sakramentu chorych do momentu kiedy osoba będzie nieprzytomna lub bliska śmierci. Komunia Święta dla chorych… Jeśli ktoś z was lub waszych bliskich choruje i chciałby przyjąć Komunię Świętą, to prosimy o zgłoszenie osoby chorej do biura parafialnego, do osoby odpowiedzialnej za Duszpasterstwo chorych, aby ustalić datę odwiedzin w domu.
