THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY JANUARY 22, 2017

= 8:30 SERVICE ONLY

 = 10:30 SERVICE ONLY

_________GATHERING_________ Prelude

Welcome

Confession and Forgiveness Here and throughout the bulletin, “P” indicates the presiding minister, “C” the congregation, “A” the assisting minister, and “R” the reader. The “+” sign is an invitation to make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism.

P C P

Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the Word made flesh, the Lord and giver of life. Amen. Let us come into the light of Christ, confessing our need for God's mercy.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P C

God of peace, we confess that we are not at peace—with others or with ourselves. We bring to you all that tears us apart: discord in our families, violence in our world, our own conflicted hearts. In your mercy, mend us. Reconnect us to one another and to you. Let peace reign over all the earth, through the Prince of peace, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

P

In the Word who has come to dwell with us, God has given us grace upon grace: forgiveness that is stronger than our sins, love that can heal every broken heart. Hear this word of God's pardon and peace: in the name of + Jesus our Savior, you are free from all your sins. Rise, shine, for your light has come. Amen.

Prayer of the Day A Let us pray. Lord Jesus of fisher folk, you taught your disciples to cast a wide net not for fish, but for people. Teach us the fishing craft. Make our fingers nimble so we may handle hearts and hands gently; make our minds quiet and patient while we wait for those who are not yet ready to receive you; and make our hearts hungry for your word, for the sake of the one who has captured our hearts already, Jesus Christ. C Amen.

Please be seated.

_________THE WORD_________ Reading

C Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands— O prosper the work of our hands! R C

Gospel

Luke 5:1-11

Jesus teaches the crowds at Lake Gennesaret from a boat. Then he tells Simon to cast his nets for fish. Skeptical, Simon does what he says, and they haul in so much fish that the boats begin to sink. Jesus pledges that Simon and the other disciples will now “fish for people”.

P C

The Gospel according to Luke, the fifth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him. R C

This is the Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Please be seated.
