Term 4

Issue No. 5

December 2016

Term 4 is a complex term for boarders and boarding staff. There is the anticipation for the boarders of Christmas, holidays, time at home with family and friends and the chance to unwind. Before any of this can be enjoyed, the boarders face a number of challenges: end of semester assignments, final exams, the stress of being in the boarding house 24/7 during swot vac, cleaning, packing, farewells. It is a privilege to help steer the boarders through those challenging weeks. We are privileged to have talented supervisors/carers who do all that they can to create a climate where effective study can take place as well as encourage the boarders to be active at times, and to relax at times. Lisa Harvey, who is the Manager of the College Uniform Shop, has worked in the girls boarding house during this year and has been a very positive influence in our boarding community. We wish Lisa all the best as she concentrates on the College Uniform Shop at its new venue in 2017. We wish all members of the boarding community a happy and holy Christmas period. Shane Hennessy, Director of Boarding

“What do the boarders do in the holidays?” Gemma Thomas (Roxby Downs), as 2017 College Captain, will be travelling to Melbourne for a Leadership camp. She will be joined by Marist School Leaders from all over Australia.

Jock Bates (Streaky Bay) is going on Immersion to India these holidays. After, he plans to relax and take in the sights of Streaky Bay.

Annie Kellock (Farrell Flat) is a part of the Immersion team travelling to the Philippines.

Matt Schiller (Minbrie) is going on Immersion to the Philippines. He is looking forward to spending some down time at his family’s shack at Lucky Bay when he returns.

Declan Redden (Riverton) is looking forward to going to the Philippines these holidays. When he returns, he will spend his time at Riverton and Port Neill with family and friends.

Coordinator of Girls Boarding, Caitlin Brown, is leading a team of SHC Year 11 students as they visit the Philippines.

Bec Allchurch (Tothill Creek) is a member of SHC Immersion team working in Fiji.

Matt Ramsey (Waddikee) is going to Cairns for the Marist Cricket Carnival. He also intends to wind down with a spot of fishing as well as making a considerable start on his Year 12 Research Project. YEAR 12 BOARDERS’ GRADUATION DINNER On Thursday 27 October, the graduating Year 12 boarders and their families joined together for their Boarding Graduation Dinner at The Glenelg Club, Glenelg East in the Main Room upstairs overlooking the Glenelg Football oval. 140 people attended the dinner, which included 34 Year 12 boarding Graduates. Amongst the invited guests were Br Paul Gilchrist from Aquinas College, Br Jordan Redden, Br Joe Hughes and Br Patrick McInerney from the Marist community, Sr Liz Tham and Paul Teisseire (Chair College Council). Our guest speaker on the night was Caitlin Galpin. The girls boarding house at SHC was blessed to have had Caitlin Galpin as a supervisor/carer and tutor for the last four years. Caitlin has combined her work in the boarding community with the completion of her university studies and she has excelled in both areas of endeavour. Caitlin was loved and respected by the girls and she always, in carrying out her duties, went above and beyond the call of duty. Many nights, when Caitlin was tutoring, she would stay for an hour or more beyond her rostered time. Caitlin made a significant contribution to our community in the time she was with us. The dinner was a great occasion and the boarding families appreciated the opportunity to be together as a community and to celebrate the completion of the SHC boarding experience for their daughters and sons.

Boarders Parents’ Association News Welcome Meeting 2017: The Boarder Parents Association is governed by the boarders’ parents. It allows us to meet other boarding parents and to be in touch with what is happening in the boarding houses. Our first meeting for the year will be on Monday 30 January commencing at 4.00pm in the Stephen DeBourg Centre. This meeting will be an informal get-together to welcome new parents and also to welcome back our continuing parents. Staff will be available at the meeting to answer any questions you may have, as well as to outline the boarding and school’s plans for 2017. We hope to have a parents weekend get-away again in 2017. Everyone that has participated previously had a great time. This is a great way to become involved more in your child’s/children’s lives in the boarding house. Please feel free to contact myself or Leo for more information either by email or mobile. We look forward to catching up with you all soon.

Boarders Parents’ Weekend 2016: We had an overwhelming response to our parent weekend away in October. In total 46 parents got together in Hahndorf, at first not knowing each other, but by Sunday morning friendships had been made. One of the highlights was the winery tour. We had tastings at ‘Shaw and Smith’ and ‘Nepenthe’ wineries where we were guided through the different wines while sampling local cheeses. A big ‘thankyou’ to the College for donating towards the cost of the bus hire, and to Jo Allchurch for helping with the organisation of the weekend. Congratulations to all that came along with the intention to have fun and meet new people. It made our job a lot easier!

Merry Christmas! Leo and Jenni Redden Leo - 0408 806 021 Jenni - 0400 072 143 Email - [email protected]
