Are you an active 4-Her who enjoys sharing your 4-H story to the public, explain your 4-H projects, and answer question? Are you an involved 4-H Adult Volunteer who loves to explain to others the meaning & values of 4-H and member’s projects? Consider becoming a member of the ASK ME Erie County 4-H Team at the 2016 Erie County Fair. Participants will be considered a “key” 4-H person to help answer questions in the 4-H Barns and 4-H Youth Building. Q: Q: What should I do if I cannot bring my 4-H Youth Development Building entry to be evaluated? A: You can have another person bring your entries if absolutely necessary. The 4-H Office strongly urges you to bring in your own entries because evaluators are able to offer constructive comments on the quality of your work. As noted, if not present, the exhibitor MUST answer questions about the entry on an accompanying 3” x 5” index card for quality.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR 4-H EXHIBITORS NOT TALKING WITH FAIR EVALUATOR For any 4-H member who is unable to bring his/her exhibits/entries to the 4-H Youth Development Building on Saturday, August 6, 2016, to speak personally with the evaluator, the following Exhibitor Information Statement is required to be completed for each exhibit/entry. The evaluator will require this in order to accept the exhibit/entry. (Cloverbuds should complete this information to the best of their abilities; regular 4-H’ers (ages 8-18 as of 1/1/16) should complete these statements fully in their own handwriting, if possible. Age and experience will be taken into consideration.) 1. What is the Kind _________ and V ariety ____________ of your exhibit (relates to vegetables, flowers, etc.) 2. Describe what you did to complete this project. Provide a list of materials, products and/or equipment used and why they were selected. Briefly explain your methods of construction process and your source of ideas (3-5 sentences is sufficient). 3. In approximately 3 – 5 sentences, describe your feelings about this project: what you learned, what challenged you, and /or how you would improve your exhibit in the future. 4. Additional information requested in the Section for this class (Be sure to read complete guidelines in each section) 5. Additional information or special needs to be noted by the evaluator. Q: Is it okay to put information on notebook paper or on a 4” x 6” index card instead of a 3” x 5” index card? A: Yes, another sized paper may be substituted for the 3”x5” index card. The answers should be in the child’s own words and handwriting when possible. Recipes may be photocopied.

What happens if I enter an item in the wrong class? A: The evaluator will ask you to have it corrected through the person in charge of entries, and the entry will then be evaluated but the premium will be reduced. If you have questions concerning the proper section/class, contact the 4-H office to arrange a time to bring the item to the office for help in answering your question. Q: When and where do I pick up my premium check? A: All premium checks (livestock & 4-H Youth Development Building exhibits) are available the last Sunday of the Fair, August 21, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the Showplex Office, or Monday, August 22 (the day after the Fair) in the Youth Development Building from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM. If you cannot make it to the Fair gr ounds during that time, checks will be available in the 4-H Office in East Aurora on August 24, between the hours of 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. All adjustments to premium awards must be made on Sunday and Monday during the hours noted. All checks must be cashed within 60 days of the check date, or they will be forfeited to the Erie County Agricultural Society after October 21, 2016. You MUST make arrangements to have your item(s) picked up by someone on Monday, August 22nd, if you are not available that day. If not, they may be left in an unsecured building, and neither the Erie County 4-H nor the Fairgrounds will claim responsibility for them. Thank you for your cooperation.

If you are an adult and interested in volunteering in any of the following capacities OR if you are a 4-H youth interested in signing up for any of the following, please visit our website to online. The needs are as follows: Evaluation Day Evaluators: Adults only Evaluator Assistants: Adults or 4-Hers over 14 Sunday, August 7 Set-Up Day Helpers: Adults & Youth Information Booth Workers: Adults 4-H Ambassadors: Youth 4-H Alive, Hands On, Mannequin Modeling: Youth Café Workers: Adults & Youth Recycling Team: Adults & Youth

Each sign-up acts as a Fair entry and Parking Pass reservation. Passes will be available beginning on Evaluation Day, August 6, and can be picked up at the Information Booth in the YDB.

Parents are STRONGLY encouraged to sign up to work alongside their child. In this case a parent/ child volunteer team will still only receive ONE Entry and ONE Parking Pass.

Here are a few points to note:

If you do not have Internet access please contact Tessa and she will sign you up manually.

In the event we run out of passes, we sincerely apologize. However, they are a gift to us – we are not entitled to them. In the event we have extra tickets, they will only be distributed to people who sign up for additional working shifts.

The May/June edition of the 4-H news provides even more thorough information about all of this. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call

Tessa Matuszak at 652-5400 x130.

ONE Fair Entry Pass and ONE Parking Pass will be given for a day, not for each activity registered for. For example: If an individual signs up to work in the café the same day as they work a recycling shift, they will still only receive ONE Entry pass and Parking Pass. Children under 12 who sign up for a shift, W ILL receive a Fair pass and Parking Pass, even though they enter the Fair for free. This is to allow their parent to bring their child into the Fair to fulfill their responsibility.

Each individual adult and youth must register separately. This can be done through Friday, July 22.

4-H Public Presentations Invitational On the Main Stage of the Youth Building, we have renewed the tradition of honoring our Public Presentations youth who excelled throughout the year and at the State campus event in May. This is a nice complement to the regular Horse Communications activities that Alycia just announced yesterday. Youth have been notified already, and we will have communications through the Public Presentations Committee to organize youth and discuss the opportunity. The 4-H Public Presentations Invitational at State Fair will be held as follows: 4-H Public Presentations Invitational (invite-only) Rotation 3: Date & Time TBD

4-H Robotics Challenge at the Fair! Rotation 3: Date & Time TBD The theme for the 2015 4-H Robotics Challenge events, is a Fiber Sciences Robotics Challenge. Proper Dress: Remember it is important to dress properly both in the show ring and out. Proper show ring attire is a shirt with a collar and correct neckline, proper fitting pants that are dark in color with no holes, a belt, closed toe shoes such as work boots to protect your feet and a nice hair cut or hair pulled back. Look at your show attire as if you were going for a farm interview and were starting your job that day, be ready to work. Presenting a positive image outside of the ring is also important, look neat and presentable when working with your projects and interacting with the public – you never know when you may be talking to a potential customer. Above all remember you are the ambassadors for 4-H and the link to agriculture!

Be sure that your goat will not eat your stall decorations, some members choose to put them above the pens so you need to plan accordingly. Meat Goats: Don’t forget to solicit potential buyers for your project, multiple buyers helps you get a better price. Working Goat members: Please make note that your show is divided into two different days. Your confirmation class will be Sunday, August 14 at 9:00 a.m. in Barn 11 and the Obstacle Course will take place on Thursday, August 11 at 6 p.m. in the Livestock Arena. CLYDE’S FEED AND ANIMAL CENTER IN HAMBURG WILL BE HOSTING THE HIGH FLYING ACTION OF

DOCKDOGS® JULY 22, 23 & 24 2016

HAMBURG, NY – For the first time ever the Clyde’s Feed and Animal Center in Hamburg, NY will be featuring the high flying action of DockDogs®, the independent governing and sanctioning body for dock jumping and dock diving canine performance sports. The exciting and crowd drawing action can be seen at Clyde’s Hamburg location, 351 Union Street, Hamburg, NY 14075 (716) 648-2171 so make sure to take advantage of this incredible attraction by experiencing the fastest growing sport for canines in North America. Throughout the Show, DockDogs® will present the Big A ir® W ave competition accompanied by an Extreme Vertical® and Speed Retrieve® competition for both competitors and spectators to enjoy. The Big Air® competition features dogs running down a 40’ dock and diving into a pool of water after an object, in which they are electronically judged for the length of their jump. The Extreme Vertical® competition is a “High Jump” for the dogs as they each lunge to snag a “bumper” suspended in the air. With each grab, the height increases in 2-inch increments until only one dog is crowned king. Rounding out the action is the newest form of competition known as Speed Retrieve® – where the dogs are put on the clock to see how fast they can run down the dock, jump into the water, swim to the end of the pool and retrieve an object which is held by a modified extender arm. The competitions are open to any and everyone. Teams are made up of one dog and one handler. Your canine must be 6 months or older to be eligible. Canines of any breed, size or shape are welcomed. Not only is the competition open to all types of canines, but also handlers above the age of 7 are welcomed. We even have a Youth Handler class for those who are between the ages of 7-14. So if you or anyone you know has a dog that likes the water, gets along with other dogs and enjoys a good “chew toy”, this event is for you! Pre-registration will be available until 1 week prior to the event by logging onto www.dockdogs.com, or you can register on-site at the beginning of the day. The website will also provide an up-to-date schedule and general information on all DockDogs® affiliated events.

4-Hers—Looking for some community service time? Clyde's has invited Erie County 4-H members to help with this great event. They are looking for volunteers to staff a food area colleting money and serving. The proceeds will then be donated to the Erie County 4-H Program. Youth CAN goes to Vive La Casa On Tuesday, June 7th, sixteen Youth CAN teen leadership groups from both Global Concepts and Tapestry Charter schools met at Vive La Casa, a refugee shelter in Buffalo, to lead activities with young children. They had four activity stations set up that the young children and teens staying at Vive could get involved with. The four stations that the Teen Leaders led were: cookie baking, taco making, drawing, and dancing. Over 25 refugee children participated in the activities, and they had a lot of fun learning new things! Vive La Casa, a program of Jericho Road Community Health Center, assists people wishing to make a refugee claim in Canada or who are seeking asylum protection in the United States, by providing safety, shelter, food and legal help. Youth CAN co-leader Mr. Kenny with teen leaders Kanu Kasonko, Erika King, Joedriel Rodriguez, and Gabriel Wooley show off the taco station at Vive La Casa.
