Coaching staff Bios In 2012, Spooner’s first as the leader of the program, San Jacinto College went 12-4-1 overall, and 6-2 in conference play. San Jacinto College didn’t make it past the regional tournament that season, but all was not lost. Three players earned NJCAA or NSCAA recognition, led by Jose Seoane, who was named a NJCAA second-team All-American, NSCAA first-team Allregion, and the team’s newcomer of the year. Pablo Vasquez also earned national recognition.

Ian Spooner Head Coach

Western Michigan University (2005) Overall Record: 53-22-2 (four seasons) Conference Record: 30-12 (four seasons)

Ian Spooner, now in his ninth season overall with the San Jacinto College soccer team, is beginning his fifth as head coach of the men’s soccer program. Spooner served four years as an assistant coach, was the interim head coach in 2012, and earned the top spot as head coach in the summer of 2013. Through all the transitions, the former collegiate goalkeeper has upheld the tradition of excellence that is San Jacinto College men’s soccer. Last season San Jac went 12-6-1 overall. At the end of the season San Jac was ranked second in the region. Five student-athletes – Roberto Diaz, Derick Gonzalez, Prince Ihencaho, Ricardo Olaya and David Koloko – signed National Letters of Intent to continue their collegiate soccer careers at four year colleges or universities. The 2014 season was full of ups and downs, but as a whole the team played hard and with a purpose. Three student-athletes earned postseason honors, led by Ian Barbosa and Prince Ihenacho, who were all-region selections. Roberto Diaz Fernandez was the team’s newcomer of the year. Two players signed National Letters of Intent to continue their education and soccer careers at four-year colleges or universities. Overall, San Jac posted a 9-11 record. The 2013 season was one for the record books for San Jac men’s soccer. Spooner guided his team to a third place national finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I men’s soccer championship, setting a new school record with 20 wins. The 2013 squad finished 20-2-0 overall, with just one regular season loss, en route to the national semifinal appearance. Six student-athletes earned NJCAA or National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) All-American honors, and 11 went on to sign National Letters of Intent at four-year colleges or universities.

Three players were named NJCAA and NSCAA All-Americans, and five others earned national recognition. Kieron Bernard, the team’s defensive MVP, signed a professional contract with the Austin Aztex FC. From 2009 to 2011, Spooner helped the Coyotes return to the regional championship. Spooner spent the 2005-06 season as the assistant coach at Cumberland University of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He holds a United States Soccer Federation National “C” Coaching License. He spent two and a half years working for the Challenge Soccer Club, and four years as a professional staff coach for Space City Soccer Club. Spooner hails from Houston, but played collegiately at Western Michigan University from 2001-2005. As a keeper for the Broncos, he was named the MidAmerican Conference player of the week in September of 2003. Spooner was the 2004 Western Michigan University Most Valuable Player and the 2001 newcomer of the year. He helped the Broncos to the 2003 MAC championship and the 2004 MAC runner-up. San Jacinto College Men’s Soccer Players in the Majors Soccer players of any age can gain inspiration from the tales of Dane Richards, Kieron Bernard, Francisco Calvo, and Mozesh Gyorio, former soccer stars at San Jacinto College who have taken their game to the next level. There is little doubt that they, and many of their peers, dreamed one day of making it to the big stage. Prior to the 2003 season, Richards might not have known exactly where Houston was on the map, but the San Jacinto College coach at that time, Ben Hunter, knew him. Hunter, who had developed quite a knack for recruiting players from Jamaica, brought Richards to San Jacinto College that season. The rest, as they say, is history. The 2003 team, the last to play for the now-retired Hunter, won 17 straight games before falling to rival Tyler in the Region XIV title game. Richards, displaying remarkable speed and ball handling skills, scored 20 goals that season. Playing for former head coach Dr. David Santesteban the following season, Richards scored 25 times, becoming the all-time career scorer at San Jacinto College. Along the way, Richards guided the team to a third-place finish at the national tournament. He went on to lead Clemson University to the NCAA College Cup, earning secondteam NSCAA All-American honors after scoring 11 goals and nine assists in 20 games as a senior. He was a Hermann Award Finalist that year, and also garnered a NSCAA All-South first team selection as well as a first-team All-ACC selection. After graduation, the New York Red Bulls drafted Richards in the second round of the 2007 amateur draft. Now, the Montego Bay native is living his dream and playing the sport professionally. The Red Bulls’ midfielder made his first professional start in April 2007 at Columbus and notched his first MLS point when he assisted on Clint Mathis’ goal on April 15 against FC Dallas. Richards scored his first career MLS goal on May 5, 2007, against Real Salt Lake. He was a finalist for the 2007 MLS Rookie of the Year, and is a member of the NJCAA Soccer Hall of Fame class of 2011. Bernard, who Dr. Santesteban recruited, followed much of the same path as Richards. He came to San Jacinto College from Spanish Town, Jamaica, and quickly made his mark on the San Jac program. A crafty defender, Bernard quickly established himself as a premier collegiate player. He captained the San Jac men’s soccer team to a second place national finish in 2008, and also

15

played for Portmore United in the Jamaican National Premier League in the 2008-09 season. Bernard turned professional on Dec. 15, 2008, when he signed with the newly established Austin Aztex in the USL First Division. He scored his first professional goal on Sept. 25, 2010 in a 4-2 win over AC St. Louis. Bernard was a two-time NJCAA and NSCAA All-American. Calvo quickly made his way up the professional ranks after returning to his native Costa Rica in the summer of 2011 to play for the national youth team. As luck would have it, one of Costa Rica’s senior professional players went down with an injury, and Calvo was asked by national head coach Ricardo La Volpe to play in a friendly game against Nigeria, an opportunity most young athletes only dream about. As the only non-professional player on the team, he got the opportunity of a lifetime when was called off the bench in the 59th minute. Calvo made such an impression that he was named a reserve call-up for the Costa Rica team at the 2011 Gold Cup, and later impressed coach La Volpe to win him a call-up for the Costa Rica squad at the 2011 Copa America. Calvo went on to play for Herediano before a stint at Perez Zeledon, where he scored give goals in 21 matches. In January 2015, Calvo joined Saprissa, and in 2016 he was also a starter for Costa Rica in the Copa America Centenario global soccer tournament. In February 2015, Gyorio signed with the Austin Aztex, after playing in the North American’ Soccer League’s Minnesota United FC. His rise to professional soccer began at San Jacinto College in 2008 when he helped the team finish as the national runner-up. That year, he was a NJCAA honorable mention all-American, allregion, team MVP, and NSCAA second-team all-region selection. In 2009, he played for the Houston Dynamo Academy, adding seven goals and six assists to his record. That same year, Gyorio represented Canada in the Francophone Games in Lebanon, earning him a spot on the Canadian U-20 Team roster. By no means are these the only San Jacinto College men’s soccer players to have made it to the big leagues. Others include Roy Hernandez (F.C. Excelsiro), Cyprian Hedrick (Sporting Kansas City), Carlos Villa (CSD Municipal), Ryan Maxwell (New England Revolution), Brandon Durden (River Plate Puerto Rico) and Ken Hoerner (Houston Dynamo reserves). These former players are living proof that hard work – on the field and in the classroom – can take you to where you want to be.
