SETTING THE SCENE • Syracuse is making its fi h NCAA Tournament appearance and fourth in the last five years. • The Orange and Big Green are mee ng in the NCAA Tournament Second Round for the second consecu ve season. • Syracuse dropped one spot in each poll this week to No. 8 in the NSCAA rankings and No. 10 in the Soccer America top 25.

THE DARTMOUTH SERIES • Sunday’s match marks the eighth all- me mee ng between Syracuse and Dartmouth. The Orange hold a 4-3 advantage in the series. • The squads met last season in the NCAA Tournament Second Round at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Big Green took the lead in the 30th minute, but a Ben Polk goal less than four minutes later ed the score at 1-1. Louis Cross scored the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute on an assist from Julian Buescher. The Syracuse defense withstood a late offensive push by the Big Green to record the 2-1 victory as it advanced to the NCAA Tournament Third Round for the second straight season and the third me in three years.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN • Dartmouth defeated St. Francis (Brooklyn), 1-0 in double over me, on Thursday in the opening round of the tournament. The win improved the Ivy League champs’ record to 9-4-5. • Three members of the Big Green have 10 or more points this season, including leading scorer Matt Danilack. He has scored four goals and recorded a team-best five assists for 13 points. Noah Paravicini (4g, 2a) and Justin Donawa (3g, 4a) have 10 points each. • James Hickok is Dartmouth’s starting goalkeeper. He has a 0.60 goals-against average and an .843 save percentage. Hickok has recorded seven shutouts this season. • Coach Chad Riley is in his fourth season at the helm of the Big Green program. He has guided Dartmouth to three straight Ivy League tles and NCAA Tournament appearances. Previously, Riley served as an assistant at Notre Dame, which is his alma mater.

SYRACUSE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT • The Orange are making the program’s fi h appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse has an all- me record of 6-2-2 in the na onal tournament. • The Orange have earned a first-round bye in each of the last three years. Syracuse has won its last three second-round matches. • Syracuse made its first appearance in the tournament in 1984. The Orange recorded its first win in 2012, a 1-0 victory at Cornell. • Syracuse recorded its first win in the Sweet 16 in 2015 against Sea le and defeated Boston College in its first Elite Eight contest. The Orange advanced to the na onal semifinals for the first me where they ed Clemson, 0-0. The Tigers won the penalty kick shootout, 4-1, to advance to the tle game.

ORANGE EARN ACC HONORS • Three members of the Orange were honored by the ACC for their play this season. The all-conference teams and player of the year honorees were selected by a vote of the head coaches. • Sophomore Miles Robinson earned the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. award He is the second member of the Orange to receive the award in the last three years, joining Alex Bono in 2014. • Robinson was also voted to the All-ACC First Team, as was senior Chris Nanco. • In addi on, Mo Adams earned a spot on both the All-ACC Third Team and All-Freshman Team. Syracuse has now had at least one selec on to the ACC All-Freshman Team since joining the league prior to the 2014 season.

NANCO LEADS ORANGE OFFENSE

• Several members of the Orange have been recognized for their success in the classroom. • Senior Oyvind Alseth and sophomores Jonathan Hagman, Hendrik Hilpert and Miles Robinson have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. It marks the second consecu ve year that Alseth has earned the honor. The group is now on the ballot for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team. • Hilpert was also honored as Syracuse University’s Mar n J. Whitman School of Management’s Freshman of the Year. • Syracuse was recognized by the NSCAA with its 2015-16 Team Academic Award, which goes to squads that have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher for the en re year.

• Senior Chris Nanco sparked Syracuse’s offense in its victory against Pi sburgh. He scored twice in the first half to lead the Orange to a 4-0 win. • It marked the third me Nanco has scored two goals in a game in his career. • He leads the team in points (13) and goals (6), which are both career highs.

ALSETH CANDIDATE FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD • Senior Oyvind Alseth was named one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. • The finance major is a four-year starter for the Orange. He was an All-ACC Third Team selec on in 2015 when he ed his career highs in points (11), goals (3) and assists (5). • Academically, he earned a spot on the ACC All-Academic Team and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selec on last season. In addi on, the two- me team captain has been a member of the Athle c Director’s Honor Roll each semester.

MILLER EARNS ACC HONOR • Sophomore Kamal Miller earned the final ACC Defensive Player of the Week award. It is Miller’s first career Player of the Week honor and the first for a member of the Orange this season. • Miller played a key role on both ends of the field in Syracuse’s 1-1 e against No. 2 Wake Forest. A er the Demon Deacons took a 1-0 lead, Miller scored his second goal of the season at the 35:00 mark to e the score. • He also anchored the Orange’s defense, which held Wake Forest to just one goal despite playing a man down for more than 104 minutes. • Miller was named to the Canadian U-20 squad for an interna onal series with Honduras earlier this month.

ROBINSON RETURNS FROM U.S. U-20 CALL UP • Sophomore Miles Robinson returned to the Orange against Virginia Tech a er spending a week with the U.S. Under-20 squad for the 2016 Four Na ons Tournament. He was one of only three collegiate players on the roster. Last summer, he played with the Under-20 squad, helping the team to the NTC Invita onal tle. • Robinson has become a key contributor on both offense and defense for the Orange this season. • He has helped Syracuse record nine shutouts this season. • Robinson scored his fourth goal of the season against Notre Dame, matching his total from last season. • He played a role in all three of Syracuse’s goals against St. John’s. He scored the first two goals against the Red Storm and had an assist on the game-winning goal. • The two goals and five points were both singlematch career highs. • Robinson is ed for third on the team in points (9) and is third in goals (4).

HILPERT CLIMBING THE LADDER • Sophomore Hendrik Hilpert is pu ng his name among the all- me leaders on Syracuse’s career records list despite playing in just 34 matches. • He recorded his 10th shutout of the season against Pi sburgh, which es him for third place on Syracuse’s single-season record list. It was his 16th career shutout, which puts him in sixth place on the school’s career leader list. • In addi on, Hilpert has 21 career wins, which gives him sole possession of seventh place on Syracuse all- me leader list.

CENTRAL NEW YORK CHAMPS • Syracuse claimed its third consecu ve Central New York Classic tle last weekend. The Orange and Colgate both finished 2-0 in the tournament, but Syracuse won the e breaker to earn the tle. • Freshman Johannes Pieles was named the tournament’s Offensive MVP, while sophomore Miles Robinson earned the Defensive MVP award for the second straight season. • Pieles and Robinson were joined on the AllTournament team by Chris Nanco and Louis Cross.

ORANGE DEBUTS • Seven different players made their Syracuse debuts in the opening weekend of the season. • Senior Sergio Camargo, a transfer from Coastal Carolina, and freshmen Mo Adams, Johannes Pieles and John Aus n Ricks were in the star ng lineup in the season opener against Massachuse s. • Freshmen Hampus Bergdahl and Jan Breitenmoser also made their collegiate debuts against UMass. • In addi on, junior Kalifa Sylla, a transfer from Monroe Community College, saw ac on for the first me against Loyola Marymount. • Kyle Gurrieri made his Syracuse debut at Cornell. He made his first career start at Albany.

MAGIC NUMBER • Syracuse is 242-16-7 (.926) all- me when scoring at least three goals in a game, including a current streak of 55 straight wins. • The last me SU lost when registering at least three goals in a game was on Oct. 18, 1998 when it fell at No. 11 Georgetown, 5-4, in over me. • The Orange was 5-0-0 last season when scoring at least three goals a er going 6-0-0 in 2014.

TEAM CAPTAINS • Redshirt senior Liam Callahan and senior Oyvind Alseth were voted team captains for Syracuse in 2016. Both served as captains last season.

ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE • Three of the 10 largest crowds in the history of the SU Soccer Stadium have been recorded this season. The Orange is averaging 1,570 fans per match in 2016. • Last season, Syracuse drew a crowd of 2,237 that watched the Orange e No. 23 Louisville on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015. It was the third-largest crowd in SU Soccer Stadium history. • It marked the second consecu ve game in which Syracuse drew a crowd of more than 2,000 fans. LAST TIME THEY MET SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 6 Syracuse will play in the 2015 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament third round for the second consecu ve year and for the third me in the last four years a er defea ng Dartmouth, 2-1, at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Orange overcame an early deficit and had a late defensive stand in the victory. Syracuse (14-5-3) immediately applied offensive pressure but couldn’t connect its passes in the final third. Although the Orange was domina ng possession, Dartmouth (12-6-1) was the first to get on the scoreboard when Ma Greer played a through ball to Jus n Donawa, who put his shot into the back of the net in 30th minute. It was the first goal Syracuse had allowed in more than 245 minutes of ac on and it marked the first me the Orange trailed in a match since the season finale on Oct. 30. Junior Ben Polk answered for the Orange less than four minutes later. He took a pass from sophomore Julien Buescher with his back to the goal. Polk turned and fired a shot, which went off the crossbar and landed past the goal line for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. The Orange tallied the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute. The play started with a free kick by Buescher, but his shot was blocked. He eventually took possession again on the right side, where he worked along the end line, spun and slid the ball to junior Louis Cross. Cross put his shot past Dartmouth goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland to give Syracuse a 2-1 lead. For Buescher, it was his team-best 10th of the season, which is the fourth-highest singleseason total in school history. Syracuse con nued to send numbers forward to try to add to its lead, and Dartmouth was able to get quality scoring chances on the countera ack. Donawa had a chance on a breakaway, but his shot went just wide of the le post in the 66th minute. The Big Green’s best opportuni es came with less than five minutes remaining. Donawa had a shot that was stopped by freshman defender Miles Robinson. The ball deflected to Amadu Kunateh, who put another shot on goal. This me it was Cross who was there to knock it away. Dartmouth had one more chance during the sequence, but Yima Asom’s shot went wide to end the threat. One of the brightest head coaches on the college circuit, Ian McIntyre has led Syracuse to unprecedented heights in his first five years at the helm of the program. A 1996 Hartwick graduate, McIntyre owns a 152103-41 (.583) record in 16 seasons as a college head coach. He’s been honored with mul ple coaching awards, including the ACC Coach of the Year Award in 2014.

Elite-level players have keyed the Orange’s success as McIntyre’s recrui ng classes have consistently been ranked in the top 40 by College Soccer News.

REVIVING A SLEEPING GIANT

DONNING ORANGE McIntyre became the 15th coach in Syracuse soccer history on Jan. 6, 2010. During his me in the Emerald City, McIntyre has gone about the task of building the Orange into a na onal contender. That effort began paying dividends in 2012 as Syracuse won 14 games, more than twice the number of victories in McIntyre’s first two years with the Orange, and the most victories for the program since 1986. Overall, Syracuse finished 14-6-1 in 2012 and was the most improved team in the na on, pos ng a win-loss improvement of +8.5. The Orange nearly doubled its number of goals (39) from the previous year and the defense posted 12 shutouts, ed for the third-most in the country. As a result, Syracuse finished second in the BIG EAST Red Division and earned a berth in the 2012 NCAA Championship, just the second me in program history the Orange advanced to the na onal tournament. Syracuse con nued to perform upon reaching the na onal stage, knocking off Ivy League champion Cornell and VCU in the opening two rounds to notch the first NCAA Tournament victories in team history. In the third round (Sweet 16), the Orange ed eventual na onal finalist Georgetown, 1-1, before being eliminated on penalty kicks. McIntyre and his assistants were rewarded with 2012 BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors for authoring the breakout campaign. In 2013, Syracuse’s first year in the Atlan c Coast Conference, McIntyre led the Orange to a 10-7-1 record, marking the first me in more than a decade that the team posted double-digit wins in consectu ve years. Along the way, the Orange went undefeated in non-conference play (7-0-0), beat two ranked teams (#12 Connec cut and #19 Clemson) and earned its first ACC win, a 2-1 victory at Duke. The Orange reached unprecendented heights in 2014 when it climbed to No. 1 in the na onal rankings for the first me in school history. Syracuse won a share of the ACC Atlan c Division and earned a program-best No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange defeated Penn State on its home field before its season came to an end in the Sweet 16 in a 2-1 over me loss to Georgetown. Syracuse posted a 16-4-1 record, finishing just one win shy of the single-season school record for victories. The 2015 squad produced the most successful season in school history. Syracuse, which had to replace seven starters, became the first No. 10 seed to win the ACC Tournament, the first in school history. The Orange earned a program-best sixth seed in the NCAA Tournament. A er a first-round bye, they defeated Dartmouth, Sea le and Boston College to advance to the College Cup for the first me in school history. The Orange faced No. 3 Clemson for the third me that season and were ed with the Tigers, 0-0, a er 110 minutes of play. Clemson won the penalty kick shootout to advance to the na onal final. Syracuse ended the season with a 16-5-4 record and was No. 4 in the final NSCAA poll, its highest final ranking in school history.

IAN MCINTYRE

HEAD COACH SEVENTH SEASON ALMA MATER: HARTWICK, 1996

Prior to taking over the Orange, McIntyre spent seven seasons (2003-09) as the head coach at his alma mater, Hartwick College. He guided the Hawks to four 10-win seasons and a 2005 NCAA Championship appearance. McIntyre succeeded the legendary Jim Lennox in 2003 and promptly led the Hawks to 15-2-1 overall record, the most wins for the program since 1993. The next season, McIntyre was named the regional coach of the year a er presiding over a 13-3-3 campaign that featured a nine-game winning streak and an Atlan c Soccer Conference runner-up finish. In 2005, McIntyre guided the team to another 13-win season and the Atlan c Soccer Conference regular-season and tournament tles. For his efforts, McIntyre was rewarded with 2005 Atlan c Soccer Conference Coach of the Year honors, and by virtue of its conference championship, Hartwick earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in a decade. Two years later, McIntyre was the driving force behind Hartwick’s successful move from the Atlan c Soccer Conference to the MAC, qualifying for the league’s postseason tournament in all three seasons (2007-09) he was at the helm.

Before becoming Hartwick’s sixth head coach, McIntyre was a standout player for the Hawks, earning NSCAA First Team All-America honors as a senior in 1995. He helped the program to two NCAA Tournament berths and a 52-20-7 record in his four seasons (1992-95). McIntyre scored 18 goals and had 10 assists in his career and developed a reputa on for clutch goal-scoring. He tallied game-winning goals in NCAA Tournament victories against Rutgers and Boston University in 1993, and the Hawks were 16-0-1 in his career when he scored a goal. McIntyre was named the Hartwick Male Athlete of the Year in 1995-96 and earned the President’s Scholar-Athlete Award. In addi on, he was enshrined in the Hartwick College Athle c Hall of Fame in 2001, his first year on the ballot.

CLIMBING THE COACHING LADDER A er his college playing career, McIntyre served as an assistant coach at Fairfield from 1996-98 under former Hartwick assistant coach Carl Rees. He helped Rees lead the Stags to a pair of Metro Atlan c Athle c Conference (MAAC) championship game appearances. In 1998, Fairfield went 15-4-1 and earned the program’s first na onal ranking, checking in at No. 24 a er a 10-0-1 start. In addi on, McIntyre coached the Region I amateur team to the gold medal at the 1999 U.S. Soccer Fes val in Portland, Ore. Following his s nt at Fairfield, McIntyre returned to Oneonta, N.Y. to become head coach for the former Division I program at Oneonta State. He posted a 36-28-7 record for the Red Dragons from 1999-2002. He led them to three straight doubledigit win seasons and was named Independent Coach of the Year in his debut campaign a er leading Oneonta to a 10-6-1 record and an upset of Hartwick in the 1999 Mayor’s Cup tle game.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 6 Syracuse’s offense scored three mes in the second half while the defense allowed just three shots in a 3-0 victory against Massachuse s in the season opener for both teams. The match was the first round of the Central New York Classic.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Johannes Pieles scored in the second over me period to give the No. 6 Syracuse men’s soccer team a 2-1 win against Loyola Marymount at the SU Soccer Stadium. With the victory, the Orange claim the Central New York Classic tle for the third straight season.

The Orange have now won their first match of the season four mes in the last five years. Overall, Syracuse is 42-35-5 all- me in seasonopening games. Syracuse dominated play in the first half and created several quality scoring chances. Redshirt senior Liam Callahan had the first scoring opportunity in the 10th minute, but his shot from the le side of the box went just wide. Senior Chris Nanco put together a nice run at the goal, but couldn’t get off a shot. The Orange also had opportuni es off free kicks, but one shot went off the crossbar, and senior Sergio Carmargo’s try in the final minute of the first half was high. Syracuse con nued to apply pressure and broke through in the 49th minute. Senior Louis Cross played a long ball to Nanco, who beat two Minutemen defenders and put his shot in the bo om right corner of the goal. Callahan added to the lead in the 59th minute. Freshman Johannes Pieles faked a shot and played the ball to Callahan down the le side of the box. He blasted his shot into the back of the net off the le foot to extend the Orange’s lead to 2-0. Redshirt junior Kenny Lassiter added an insurance goal in in the 80th minute off an assist from Camargo for the 3-0 final. Syracuse outshot Massachuse s, 21-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert was never really tested as he made one save in his seventh career shutout. GAME NOTES: The crowd of 1,709 was the ninth-largest crowd in SU Soccer Stadium history.

The game-winning goal came off a corner kick. Senior Oyvind Alseth served the ball into the box and Pieles headed the ball inside the far post for his second goal of the game in the 102nd minute of play. Pieles’ first career goal gave the Orange (2-0) the early lead when he scored in the 22nd minute. Sophomore Jonathan Hagman had the ini al shot, which was deflected by a Loyola Marymount defender to Pieles, who put his shot in the back of the net. The Orange were the more dangerous team throughout the first half. Syracuse recorded five shots, while the Lions were not able to get a shot off against the Orange defense. The Lions (0-2) ed the game up in the 68th minute when Adian Perez scored from 25 feet out for his first goal of the season. The Orange con nued to put pressure on Loyola Marymount, but couldn’t take advantage of their opportuni es. Syracuse had the final chance in regula on with a corner kicks with 39 seconds remaining, but couldn’t get off a shot. The Orange dominated the first over me session as senior Chris Nanco, redshirt junior Kenny Lassiter and Jan Breitenmoser got off shots, but Lions’ goalkeeper Collin Partee was up for the challenge. Syracuse finally broke through in the second extra session on its 12th corner kick of the match. Syracuse recorded 15 shots to five for Loyola Marymount. SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Jonathan Hagman picked an opportune time for his first career goal. He found the back of the net in the 105th minute for the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to give the No. 6/8 Syracuse men’s soccer team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against St. John’s. The win keeps the Orange perfect this season with a 4-0 record.

Nanco registered his second career mul ple-goal match in the victory. He also had two goals against Manha an during his freshman season. Nanco leads the team in goals (3) and is ed for the team lead in points with freshman Johannes Pieles with six points apiece. Pieles had an assist in the match and has had at least one point in every game this season. The Orange took the lead in the 23rd minute when Nanco was taken down in the box by a Raiders’ defender, resul ng in a penalty kick. Nanco took the penalty kick and put his shot past Raiders’ goalkeeper Ricky Brown. It was his second goal of the season and first goal allowed by Colgate in 2016. The Raiders’ Tim Oberg tried to even the score in the 41st minute, but his shot went off the post and the Orange took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at hal ime. Syracuse added to its lead in the 56th minute when Pieles slid the ball to redshirt junior Kenny Lassiter, who put his shot in the back of the net for his second goal of the year. The Raiders increased the pressure a er falling behind by two. But Syracuse’s defense successfully defended against six corner kicks and allowed just two shots on goal in the final 35 minutes as the Orange recorded their second shutout of the season. Nanco scored the final goal of the game in the 85th minute. Freshman John Aus n Ricks crossed the ball into the box where a Colgate defender intercepted the pass. He couldn’t control the ball and Nanco knocked the rebound into the corner for the 3-0 final. Syracuse outshot Colgate, 9-6, while the Raiders recorded eight corner kicks to four for the Orange. The game-winning play started with a throw in by sophomore Miles Robinson. Freshman Johannes Pieles headed the ball to Hagman, who put his shot past Michael Bernardi to give Syracuse the victory. Robinson played a key role in the win as he scored the Orange’s first two goals of the match for the first multiple-goal game of his career. The first half was highly contested as neither team was able to apply much pressure until the Orange broke through in the 44th minute on a set piece. Senior Oyvind Alseth served the ball into the box on a corner kick where he connected with sophomore Kamal Miller. Miller’s shot toward the left corner of the goal deflected off Robinson’s shin into the back of the net to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. St. John’s (1-1-1) tied the score in the 56th minute on a corner kick. Alistair Johnson recorded his second goal of the season off an assist from Harry Cooksley. Cooksley then gave the Red Storm the lead in the 65th minute on a goal from 25 yards out. It marked the first time Syracuse has trailed this season. The Orange continued to apply pressure and evened the score in the 82nd minute when Robinson and Miller teamed up again as Robinson scored his second goal of the night. Syracuse produced more scoring chances in the final eight minutes of regulation, but couldn’t take advantage of its opportunities, sending the game to overtime. Hagman had a chance to end the match in the first overtime, but his shot went just wide in the 94th minute. That was the only shot either team could get off in the session, sending the game to a second overtime. He also had the first and only shot in the second overtime, which gave the Orange their second overtime victory this season.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Johannes Pieles scored on a header with 2:50 remaining in regula on to give No. 5/3 Syracuse a 1-0 victory against Hofstra on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The Orange remain undefeated this season with a 6-0 record.

Syracuse’s first goal was set up when sophomore Jonathan Hagman was taken down in the box by a NC State defender. Senior Chris Nanco converted the resulting penalty kick for his team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the Orange a 1-0 lead.

Pieles’ goal came on a set piece when Syracuse was awarded a corner kick a er senior Sergio Camargo’s shot was deflected by a Hofstra defender over the goal line. Redshirt senior Liam Callahan served the ball into the box where he connected with Pieles, who headed the ball into the net for his third goal of the season and his second game-winner in 2016.

The score stayed that way until the 74th minute when senior Oyvind Alseth scored directly off the corner kick for his first goal of the year. Syracuse also improves to 2-0 in ACC play, while the Eagles are now 4-2-1 overall, 1-1 in league ac on.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Redshirt senior Liam Callahan scored the go-ahead goal less than five minutes into the second half to lead the No. 2 Syracuse men’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory at Cornell on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Orange improve their record to 8-0, which is the best start in program history, bettering the mark of the 1984 squad that began the season with seven consecutive wins.

Syracuse applied pressure early on the Eagles, earning two corner kicks in the first 11-plus minutes of play. But the Eagles regained the momentum and had their best scoring chance of the night in the 16th minute when Isaac Normesinu got off a shot on goal, but goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert was there for the save. It would be Boston College’s only shot on frame in the match.

Syracuse applied pressure early and had a scoring chance in the eighth minute when Liam Callahan crossed the ball across the box, but the pass was just out of the reach of senior Oyvind Alseth. While the Orange continued to be the more dangerous team, it was Cornell that got on the scoreboard first when George Pedlow broke into the box and put his shot in the back of the goal to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. The goal was the first Syracuse had allowed in more than 340 minutes of play.

The Orange were able to connect their passes late in the half and senior Sergio Camargo had a chance to get Syracuse on the scoreboard, but Cedric Saladin made the save as the teams were ed, 0-0, at hal ime. Syracuse came out strong a er intermission and sophomore Jonathan Hagman recorded his second goal of the season from 25 feet on an assist from freshman Johannel Pieles. The Eagles responded by earning back-to-back corner kicks in the 59th minute, but didn’t get off a shot on either a empt. Callahan gave the Orange the lead for good in the 51st minute when he scored off a pass across the box from Alseth. Hagman added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute. Senior Sergio Camargo tried to lob the ball over Cornell goalkeeper Ryan Shellow, who was able to get his fingertips on the ball, deflecting it to the left side where Hagman collected the ball, shot and scored for his third goal of the year. NOTRE DAME, Ind.– Notre Dame’s Jon Gallagher scored with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to give the No. 3 Fighting Irish a 2-1 win over No. 2 Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 23. The loss snaps Syracuse’s eight-game winning streak, which was the best start in program history.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Two of the top teams in collegiate men’s soccer battled at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday night when No. 3 Syracuse hosted No. 4 North Carolina. The Orange held the advantage in shots and corner kicks, but couldn’t take advantage of their opportunities as the match ended in a 0-0 tie. Sophomore goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert posted his 12th career shutout in the tie, which tie him for sixth place on Syracuse’s career record list.

The first 20 minutes featured back and forth action between two of the top defenses in the league. Notre Dame (7-1-0, 2-1-0) was able to gain the momentum and controlled possession, putting pressure on the Orange. Syracuse continually turned the Fighting Irish away, but couldn’t get the ball into its offensive third. Notre Dame finally broke through with less than a minute to go in the first half when Evan Panken served the ball into the box where he connected with Jack Casey, who was making a run toward the goal. Casey put his shot in the back of the net for his first career goal and the Fighting Irish led 1-0 at halftime. After Notre Dame had the first scoring opportunity after intermission, the Orange (8-1-0, 2-1-0) were the more dangerous team throughout the second half. All eight of Syracuse’s corner kicks came in the second half and it was a set piece that led to Syracuse’s goal. Senior Oyvind Alseth served the ball into the box where sophomore Miles Robinson knocked the ball into the net on a header in the 79th minute. The Orange had two more corner kicks following the goal, but couldn’t get off a shot on either attempt. The game-winning play started on a Notre Dame free kick around midfield. Syracuse caused a turnover just outside the box, but its clearing pass was intercepted. Gallagher took possession of the ball and worked his away around the Orange defense to get a shot off from 20 yards out that Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert got his hands on, but couldn’t stop as the ball went into the left corner of the net for the game winner. Notre Dame finished the match with 14 shots and five corner kicks, while the Orange had 12 shots and eight corner kicks. Hilpert recorded three saves, and Notre Dame’s Chris Hubbard had two.

Nanco again was causing problems for the Tar Heels in the 80th minute. He had a shot blocked and then hit the crossbar. His shot off a corner kick in the 82nd minute went wide on what was Syracuse’s final scoring chance in regulation. ALBANY, N.Y. – No. 3 Syracuse gave up the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute in a 2-1 setback at Albany on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The Orange are now 8-2-1 overall.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Louisville goal in the 23rd minute was the difference in the game as the No. 8 Cardinals defeated No. 3 Syracuse, 1-0, on Friday, Oct. 7. The Orange go to 8-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 in ACC play, while Louisville improves to 9-1-2, 4-0-1 in league action.

Albany took an early lead in the third minute. The Great Danes (5-32) crossed the ball into the box where Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert blocked it, but couldn’t control the ball. The deflection went to Leo Melgar, who put his shot high in the center of the net for his second goal of the season. The Orange had a chance to even the score in the 33rd minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box. But freshman Johannes Pieles’ shot sailed over the crossbar. Syracuse didn’t miss in the 38th minute. Senior Chris Nanco’s aggressive play led to a corner kick. The Orange’s initial shot went off the crossbar and deflected to sophomore Kamal Miller on the left side of the box. His first shot was saved on the goal line, but again deflected back to him. He buried his next shot in the back of the net for his first goal of the season to even the score at 1-1. The Great Danes recorded the game-winner at the 74:12 mark. Keith Traut served the ball to the far post where he connected with Jonathan Interiano. Interiano put his shot in the left corner of the net for his first goal of the season. Syracuse outshot Albany, 12-9, and had seven corner kicks to one for the Great Danes. Hilpert recorded three saves, while Lucas Vallilo made six saves for Albany.

The Orange regrouped, were more organized and controlled possession for the remainder of the half, but couldn’t get off a shot on goal as they trailed, 1-0, at intermission. Syracuse was the more dangerous team throughout the second half, recording eight shots while allowing just three. A free kick in the 47th minute resulted in a shot by Camargo that went high. The Orange’s best scoring chance came on a corner kick in the 66th minute. Senior Oyvind Alseth served the ball into the box, but freshman Johannes Pieles’ header went over the crossbar. Louisville goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland kept Syracuse off the scoreboard with a save on sophomore Jonathan Hagman’s hard shot from the right side in the 84th minute. SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Sergio Camargo scored an unassisted goal in the 64th minute to give No. 10 Syracuse a 1-0 victory against No. 15 Virginia Tech on Friday, Oct. 14. The win snaps the Orange’s two-game losing streak and improves their record to 9-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the ACC.

HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshmen John-Austin Ricks and Mo Adams each scored their first career goals to lead No. 6 Syracuse to a 2-0 victory at Hartford on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The win in their final non-conference match of the season improves the Orange’s record to 10-3-1. It marks the fifth consecutive year Syracuse has reached double figures in victories.

The game-winning goal was set up by a shot by sophomore Jonathan Hagman. His hard shot was blocked by a Virginia Tech defender. The ball bounced off another Hokies player to Camargo on the right side of the box. He got off a sliding shot that got by Virginia Tech goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard for the only goal of the match. It was the first goal as a member of the Orange for Camargo, who transferred to Syracuse from Coastal Carolina. Camargo nearly gave the Orange the lead in the eighth minute, but his shot went off the post. Syracuse had several scoring chances in the first half but couldn’t take advantage of its opportuni es. Camargo tested Ben Lundgaard late in the half, but the Hokies’ goalkeeper made one of his six saves on the night as the teams went into the locker rooms ed at 0-0. The Orange con nued to apply pressure in the second half as they recorded two shots and earned a corner kick in the first 10 minutes. A er Camargo gave Syracuse the lead, the Orange con nued to press forward and controlled possession for the remainder of the half. CLEMSON, S.C. – Syracuse sophomore goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made a save in each of the overtime sessions as the No. 6 Syracuse men’s soccer team played to a 0-0 tie at No. 8 Clemson on Friday, Oct. 21.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 6 Syracuse men’s soccer team overcame playing a man down for more than 104 minutes to e No. 2 Wake Forest, 1-1, on Friday, Oct. 28 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange end the regular season with an overall record of 10-3-3 and a 3-2-3 mark in ACC play.

The first half was evenly played as neither team could break down the other’s defense. The Orange earned a corner kick in the first minute, but couldn’t get off a shot. Sophomore Jonathan Hagman had Syracuse’s first scoring chance, but his shot in the 22nd minute went wide. Syracuse was able to get a couple of shots off on corner kicks, but neither were on frame. The Tigers were not able put either of their two shots in the half on goal, the first of which didn’t come until the 32nd minute. The Orange outshot Clemson in the second half, 6-3, but it was the Tigers that had the best scoring chance when a wide open Trey Langlois had a shot from inside the box, but his attempt sailed over the crossbar in the 80th minute. Senior Chris Nanco had the final chance in regulation, but his shot went wide as the game went into overtime. Both teams came out aggressively in the first extra session. Hilpert was tested for the first time 38 seconds into overtime as he recorded a save on Grayson Rainer’s shot. Syracuse was the more dangerous team the remainder of the first overtime. Hagman put his shot on goal in the 95th minute, which Ximo Miralles stopped for one of his two saves. A Tiger foul in the 96th minute led to another scoring opportunity. Senior Oyvind Alseth placed his free kick perfectly into the box, but a Clemson defender got around sophomore Miles Robinson enough to deflect the ball out of bounds.

Syracuse earned a corner kick in the sixth minute, and senior Oyvind Alseth served the ball into the box. As the players from both teams ba led for the ball, sophomore Miles Robinson was assessed a red card at the 5:15 mark, forcing Syracuse to play with just 10 players on the field for the remainder of the match. The Demon Deacons (12-2-3, 5-1-2) took the lead in the 23rd minute. Kevin Politz fought off an Orange defender and passed the ball to Jon Bakero, who put his shot in the le corner of the net for his fourth goal of the year. Wake Forest con nued to apply pressure on Syracuse, but it successfully defended against two corners and goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made two saves to keep the Orange within striking distance. Syracuse ed the score at the 35 minute mark. Senior Liam Callahan served the ball into the box where it bounced off a couple of players before sophomore Kamal Miller gained possession. His shot deflected off a Wake Forest defender into the le corner of the net to even the score at 1-1. The Demon Deacons were the more dangerous team for the remainder of the half, but couldn’t solve the Syracuse defense.

Hilpert kept the game tied with his diving stop on Michael Melvin’s shot from the left side in the opening minute of the second overtime period. Neither team could get a shot off for the remainder of the game for the 0-0 tie.

Wake Forest outshot the Orange, 10-2, in the second half, but only two of their shots were on target, which Hilpert handled to send the game to over me. The Demon Deacons earned a corner kick in the 98th minute, but couldn’t get off a shot as the teams headed to a second extra session. Hilpert stopped Wake Forest’s only shot on goal in the second over me as the match ended in a 1-1 e.

The shutout was the third straight for the Orange. Overall, Syracuse’s defense has posted nine shutouts this season, including five in ACC play.

Wake Forest held a 21-6 advantage in shots and earned 10 corner kicks to three for Syracuse. Hilpert recorded a career-high six saves for the Orange, while Alex Ferrell had one save for the Demon Deacons.

The Orange advance to the quarterfinals where they will face Clemson, which is No. 1 in this week’s RPI, on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in South Carolina.

CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 7 Syracuse lost a penalty shootout, 4-2, at Clemson in the quarterfinals of the ACC Men’s Soccer Tournament. The match officially ended a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of play.

The Orange, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, were the aggressors from the opening whistle. Nanco gave Syracuse (11-3-3) the lead in the 11th minute when he pressured a Panthers’ pass back to goalkeeper Jacob Rooth. Rooth didn’t control the ball and a charging Nanco deflected the ball into the le corner of the net. Nanco added to the lead in the 21st minute. He took the ball down the le side and crossed the ball into the box where it deflected off a Pi sburgh defender into the goal. It marked the third me Nanco has scored twice in a game in his career. He now leads the team in goals (6) and points (13). A er a delay to the start of the second half due to a power outage, the Orange successfully defended against two Pi sburgh (2-13-3) corner kicks in the first 11 minutes of play. Syracuse con nued to send numbers forward and added to its lead in the 64th minute when Hagman collected a loose ball in the box and put his shot inside the near post. Hagman found the back of the net again less than seven minutes later. The play started with a hard shot by senior Sergio Camargo that hit the crossbar. The deflec on came to Hagman, who scored his fi h goal of the season and recorded his first mul ple-goal game of his career as the Orange posted a season high in goals. Syracuse outshot Pi sburgh, 18-8, and recorded six corner kicks to four for the Panthers. Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made two saves and posted his 10th shutout of the season, which e him for third place on Syracuse’s single-season record list.

It marked the third straight meeting between the two teams that went to overtime and the second time in the last two years that a shootout decided the advancing team in tournament play. The Orange (11-3-4) went first in the shootout and Kamal Miller converted his penalty kick to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. Clemson goalkeeper Brady Allardice, who did not see any action during the match, stopped the Orange’s next two attempts as the Tigers took a 3-1 lead in the round of five. Kenny Lassiter converted his shot to cut the lead to one, but Diego Campos put his attempt in the back of the net to clinch the shootout victory. The first half was a defensive battle as neither team generated many scoring chances. Syracuse’s first chance came in the 15th minute when Chris Nanco played the ball out to Oyvind Alseth. Alseth crossed the ball into the box to Johannes Pieles, who was making a run at the net. Pieles got a shot off that went over the cross bar. Nanco had another chance in the 42nd minute when he received a through ball, but his shot went just wide as the teams were tied at 0-0 at intermission. Both teams were more dangerous in the second half. Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made two of his three saves in a span of 10 minutes to keep Clemson off the scoreboard. Kalifa Sylla got a shot off in the 66th minute that was saved by Tigers’ goalkeeper Ximo Miralles. On the rebound, Patrick Bunk-Anderse played the ball long to Campus, who took control of the ball with a Syracuse defender on him, and scored from 22 yards out to give Clemson a 1-0 lead. The Orange continued to apply offensive pressure and were awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute when the Tigers were called for a handball in the box. Sergio Camargo converted the penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1 as the match went to overtime for the third straight meeting between the two schools.
