QUICK HITS • The Cornell football team will look for its first 3-0 start since 2008 when the Big Red visits Central New York rival Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. at Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y. • The contest will be televised by Time Warner Cable and can be heard locally on WHCU 95.9 FM/870 AM, with Barry Leonard and Jason Weinstein on the call. • The Big Red, picked to finish eighth in the Ivy League preseason poll, has exceeded all expectations with wins over Bucknell (24-16) and Yale (27-13) to kick off the season, matching the program’s win total for the previous two seasons combined. • Dating back to last year, Cornell has gone 3-1 in its last four contests. • Cornell opened its Ivy season with a dominant victory over the Bulldogs in front of 15,493 fans celebrating Homecoming at Schoellkopf Field this past weekend. • The home team took a three-score lead into halftime (24-3) and was never threatened after the break. • Sophomore quarterback Dalton Banks, making his second varsity start, had his first 300-yard passing game after completing 23-of-32 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns without committing a turnover on his way to earning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week. • In two games, Banks has completed 40-of-56 passes (.714) for 466 yards and three passing touchdowns to go along with two more rushing scores. • Defensively, the Big Red has cut its scoring defense in half (14.5 in 2016, 29.6 in 2015) in large part due to its ability to create turnovers. • Cornell has intercepted five passes and forced seven turnovers a year after picking off just four passes with nine total turnovers caused in 10 games. • Special teams has also been a strength, with two-time Ivy Special Teams Player of the Week Zach Mays (3-of-3 field goals, 6-of-6 PATs, 9-of-10 kickoffs for touchbacks) and preseason first-team All-American Chris Fraser (40.7 yards per punt, five downed inside the 20) leading the way. • In order to go to 3-0, Cornell will have to pass its biggest test of the season to date — a matchup with 2015 Patriot League champion and FCS quarterfinalist Colgate. • The Raiders (1-2), ranked in the FCS top 25 as recently as last week, have losses to BCS Syracuse (33-7) and FCS No. 7 Richmond (38-31), along with a decisive win over Yale (55-13). • Third-year head coach Dan Hunt sports a 15-14 record on the sidelines after nearly two decades as an assistant coach for the Raiders.

ABOUT COLGATE • Colgate has opened its season with a 1-2 record into its Homecoming, with its two losses coming to BCS foe Syracuse (33-7) and No. 7 Richmond (38-31) on the road. • The Raiders and the Big Red have one common opponent, with Colgate blasting Yale 55-13 on Sept. 17 before the Big Red upended the Bulldogs the following weekend, 27-13. • Colgate, a FCS quarterfinalist a year ago and ranked No. 22 last week, fell out of the national polls after the loss to Richmond.
