Meet the Opponent – Southwestern Oklahoma State – Head Coach: Ryan Held – Colors: Navy Blue and White – 2007 Record: 5-5 – Series Record: A&M-Commerce leads 7-2 Tradition Texas A&M University-Commerce is the only original member of the Lone Star Conference. With an overall record of 464-377-31--the 463 wins are the 21st most in NCAA Division II. The Lions have posted 20 conference titles and finished second on 13 occasions in 75 years. Four-Straight Wins With the 20-17 homecoming victory over Angelo State on Saturday, the Lions have won three straight for the first time since the 1996 season. In 1996, during that stretch, the Lions posted wins over West Texas A&M (31-0), Eastern New Mexico (42-10) and Abilene Christian (17-0) before Angelo State snapped the winning streak with a 35-32 victory in Commerce. The last four-game winning streak came in 1995 when the Lions won five straight before dropping a 56-35 decision in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. On the Horizon A win on Saturday over the Bulldogs and a loss by Central Oklahoma to Northeastern State will give the Lions their first-ever Lone Star Conference North Division title. A&M-Commerce joined the North Division prior to the 2005 season. 40-Point Club With a 43-point output against East Central and a 41-point effort against Southeastern Oklahoma State, it marked the first time that an A&M-Commerce offense has recorded two 40-plus point games since the 1996 squad recorded three. Century Mark Lions’ running back Nabil El-Amin has rushed for over 100 yards in the Lions’ last four games against Southeastern Oklahoma, Northeastern State, Angelo State and East Central. El-Amin ran for a season-high 138 yards on 24 carries against East Central, two weeks ago. He totaled 120 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries against the Rams last weekend. He broke a season-long 64-yarder, as well. On Oct. 13 against the RiverHawks, El-Amin totaled 120 yards on 27 carries. El-Amin nearly had his first 100-yard game against Central Oklahoma, when he rushed 24 times for 80 yards. More than Just a Running Back Junior Nabil El-Amin has proved to be valuable on kickoff returns in 2007, in addition to his success out of the backfield. The Rochester, New York native has ran two kickoffs back for touchdowns during the season. Most recently, a 90-yard return to start the second half against East Central. His 527 kickoff return yards are nearly an A&M-Commerce single-season record as Marvin Brown in 1951 ran 20 kicks back for 547 yards. It is the oldest single-season record in the A&M-Commerce Record Book.

It is the lowest total allowed by an A&M-Commerce defense since 1992 when Angelo State was held to 83 yards of total offense. Roar of the Defense In eight games, in 2007, the A&M-Commerce defense has held their opponent to under 125 yards rushing. Last year, the Lions held six opponents under 100 yards and the most that the Lions gave up was 179 to Tarleton State. No Fishin Around Sophomore defensive back Mark Fisher forced a fumble late against Angelo State to preserve the Lions’ 2017 win. He also picked up a fumble and ran it 16 yards out for the first player since Anthony Fisher picked up a West Texas A&M fumble in 2004 in Canyon. Against East Central, Fisher greeted East Central wide receiver Larry Carter in the end zone on a hitch pass for a safety. It is the first safety recorded by the A&M-Commerce defense since Lions tackled Abilene Christian’s Rashon Myles in the end zone on Sept. 17, 2005. Marcus the Menace Junior defensive end Marcus Smith has emerged as a menace to opposing offenses. The Conroe, Texas native is tied for second in the Lone Star Conference with 15 tackles for loss. He is only four shy of the school record of 19. Big Sandy Redshirt sophomore Andreé Smith, who hails from Big Sandy, Texas (the same hometown as Chicago Bears head coach - Lovie Smith) has worked his way into the starting lineup at the defensive end position. He leads the team and is second in the LSC with six sacks. Smith also ranks second on the team with 10 tackles for loss for minus 84 yards. Taking it to the House The 97-yard kickoff touchdown return by Nabil El-Amin against Angelo State is the longest kickoff return by an A&M-Commerce player in school history at Memorial Stadium. The last time that A&M-Commerce ran back a kick for a touchdown was on November 16, 1995 when Jason Smith ran a Tarleton State kick back 94 yards. The longest return all-time by an A&M-Commerce player are a pair of 100-yard returns by Bob Sloan in 1950 and Marvin Brown in 1951. Both came against Midwestern State.

Hauling It In With a new look to the Texas A&M-Commerce offense, wide receivers Meldrick Grice, Orlando Hernandez, JaMichael Palmer and David Wofford, have all nearly doubled their career totals in receptions in 2007. • JaMichael Palmer – Career (heading into 2007 season): 2 | 2007: 36 • Meldrick Grice – Career (heading into 2007 season): 16 | 2007: 27 • Orlando Hernandez – Career (heading into 2007 season): 12 | 2007: 20 • David Wofford – Career (heading into 2007 season): 9 | 2007: 16 Spreading the Wealth 11 different Lions have scored touchdowns in 2007, including a career-high five from senior wide receiver JaMichael Palmer. Last season only five players found the end zone. Setting New Marks Against the Savage Storm The 410 yards of total offense against Southeastern Oklahoma are the most by an A&M-Commerce squad since Oct 30, 2004 against Angelo State (462) and the 41 points are the most scored by a Lions team since a 1998 squad put 52 on the board against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Lions Kickers Not appearing in the 2007 football media guide are kickers - Chris Quiroga (#23) and Daniel Swaim (#16). Quiroga handles the field goal and extra-point duties for the Lions. Quiroga, who is originally from Simi Valley, California, was a three-year letterwinner in football and in soccer in high school. Last year, as a freshman, he made seven of 10 field goals at Moorpark College. His father, John was a soccer player at UNLV. Swaim is battling with #39 Berat Kllapija for the punting duties. For the last two years, Swaim has been a defender on the Lon Morris College soccer team. A graduate of Kilgore high school, he was a three-year letterwinner in soccer, twice in football and in baseball. On the gridiron, he was not a kicker; he was a defensive tackle and offensive guard as a two-year starter and letterwinner. His brother, Dustin was a four-year member of the football team at Mary Hardin Baylor. Close Games Under Conley (games decided by three points or less): The Lions have played in 12 contests - including eight in the last two years - decided by three points or less since 2004. A&M-Commerce has posted a 5-7 overall record in those ‘nail-biting contests.’ 2004: 0-3 2005: 1-2 2006: 3-1 2007: 2-2 New Staff There are six new coaches for the Texas A&M University-Commerce football team as they head into the 2007 season. Jamie Critchlow is the new offensive coordinator after spending the last two years as the head coach at Tyler Junior College. David Gibbs is the defensive coordinator after spending the last nine years as a defensive coordinator on the high school level. On the offensive side of the ball, Kevin Barbay will serve as the quarterbacks/wide receivers coach after spending the last two years at Baylor University. On the defensive side of the ball, Randy Wilkins joins the Lions coaching staff after being a graduate assistant coach at Troy University for the last two years and Cedric Dickerson will coach the secondary. After playing the last two seasons at linebacker, JR Satchel will serve as a graduate assistant. New Leader In addition to the new coaches, Texas A&M University-Commerce named Carlton Cooper as its new athletic director in a press conference on June 19th. Cooper, who has spent the last nine years working for the athletic department at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, comes with an extensive athletic background as a former student-athlete and as a supervisor of internal and external affairs within intercollegiate athletics.
