THE NATIONAL BUSINESS REVIEW

Your self-driving car is already waiting

THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF TALK about autonomous vehicles of late. The jellybean-shaped Google self-driving car has stolen a lot of column inches but that’s mainly because Google is inescapable, even for people who have no interest in cars. If you’re using a computer, chances are you’ll come across Google – and all its many splendid projects – eventually. Away from Silicon Valley, mainstream car manufacturers are already well ahead with autonomous vehicle development projects. Volvo has been working on its IntelliSafe system – which among other things will allow you to commute to the office while perusing the morning’s news on your tablet device – for some time. PSA Groupe, which owns Citroen and Peugeot, ran a self-driving car for 580km between Paris and Bordeaux without incident. Meanwhile Mercedes-Benz’s F 015 project takes the self-driving philosophy and adds a whole lot of luxury to appeal to those more

used to a human chauffer. But outside the laboratory, think about the safety features already appearing in cars like the ones on the following pages. Adaptive cruise control uses stereo camera technology to watch the speed of the vehicle in front in heavy traffic and slow down or speed up accordingly. Under certain circumstances, many cars will even come to a full stop – completely autonomously – if traffic ahead grinds to a halt. Adaptive High Beam technology automatically dips your headlights on back country roads if it detects an oncoming vehicle, before the driver is dazzled. Lane departure warning systems give you an alert if you stray across the white line. Many vehicles – even $40,000 hatchbacks – will scan a parking space, decide if the car will fit into it and self-park, with minimal interaction from the driver. Autonomous vehicles in the future? In many respects they’re already here.

NBR SHOWROOM AUTUMN 2016

It’s just as well Mazda’s line-up of CX crossover and SUV models feature plenty of boot space, because the manufacturer has certainly been tasked with collecting numerous global awards lately. The Mazda MX-5 has won the World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year (the first time a manufacturer has won both at the same time) and the CX-3 has also won plenty of silverware, including the National Business Review’s crossover of the year award for 2015. The brand has plenty of depth to its range, possibly best exemplified by the CX-3 and CX-5 crossover vehicles, with the highly-anticipated new CX-9 on the horizon too. Mazda’s hallmark attention to detail and impressive standard specification offering is immediately evident in the CX-3 range of compact crossovers. For example, every CX-3 receives MZD Connect; this system seamlessly interacts with your mobile devices to ensure your contacts, music, navigation and social networks are safely at your fingertips via intuitive touchscreen while on the go. Clever technology, a well-crafted cabin environment and brilliant packaging are highlights of the larger CX-5 range too. Naturally there is plenty of room for five people and their gear in the CX-5, augmented by a decently-proportioned cargo area. There’s even a trick ‘Karakuri’ tonneau cover which moves with the opening bootlid. Mazda certainly isn’t resting on its laurels with these two model lines, however. Later this year New Zealand will see the all-new seven-seat Mazda CX-9 SUV. This full family-sized premium-level addition to the CX range will incorporate the latest Skyactiv technologies, including an all-new 2.5-litre Skyactiv petrol engine with dynamic pressure turbo (the first turbo petrol in the Skyactiv-G line-up) and Predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive to help tackle the back-roads of New Zealand with confidence and stability. Engineered with family comfort and recreation firmly in mind, the Mazda CX-9 will also feature the full suite of i-Activsense safety technology, including high beam control, Mazda radar cruise control, advanced blind spot monitoring, smart brake and smart city brake support.

SPECIFICATIONS Engine: 5.0-litre V8 petrol Power: 351kW Torque: 530Nm Fuel Consumption: 11.3L/100km Price: $174,900 display instrumentation giving the driver all manner of vehicle data and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system. As much as it’s styled to look aggressive, it sounds appropriately ferocious too. Hit the starter button and the GS F fires up with a throaty roar which settles to a burble. It’s as much a statement of intent as those phenomenal performance figures allude to.

From Lexus comes a new highperformance model that should have the German manufacturers looking over their shoulders. The rear wheel drive GS F sedan is the latest addition to the ‘F’ performance range following the arrival of the similarly-themed RC F coupe last year. The numbers are diverting; 351kW peak power and 530Nm of torque, a zero to one hundred sprint of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 270km/h. The GS F sedan features an eightspeed automatic transmission, a torque vectoring rear differential and Lexus’ drive mode select system which allows the driver to modify engine, acceleration and steering response through selectable modes (eco, normal, sport and sport+ for the full track day experience). Stopping is aided by high performance grade Brembo brakes, front and rear. Lexus’ new sports sedan also looks as dramatic and aggressive in person as the photos suggest. It sits low and wide on premium 19” alloy wheels. The ventilation indentations behind the front wheel arches are a particular highlight, as are the deep sills, ‘spindle’ grille, carbon fibre

It’s powerful, exhibits all the hallmark stability and sure-footedness of Subaru’s exceptional Symmetrical All Wheel Drive technology, is generously proportioned for the family and is packed with premiumlevel specification for an impressive price.
