About Newcastle Business School In today’s global economy all organisations, no matter how large or small, operate in a dynamic and complex environment. Because of this, we ensure that everything we do at Newcastle Business School has a strong international focus. We have 20 years experience of delivering international programmes and recognise that international exposure, international culture and international experience are all part and parcel of the multiplicity of the postgraduate provision at Newcastle Business School.

International means real engagement with partners and institutions overseas. We enjoy established links with leading education providers and organisations all over the world. For example, we were the first British Business School to offer a joint degree in Russia in 1993 with the State University of Management in Moscow. We also began our first overseas franchise in 1994 and were amongst one of the first universities in the UK to offer dual degree programmes with European partners. Our programmes are delivered in countries as diverse as France, Russia, Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong, China, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. At every level of the curriculum and in day-to-day university life, our students are constantly exposed to international influences. On a social level, the rich diversity of our student nationality mix at Northumbria University can have a lasting and positive impact on our students’ understanding and development. Today Newcastle Business School is the largest centre of Business and Management education in the North of England, and one of the largest

4

Business Schools in the UK. It has been ranked in the top quartile for business in the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2011. It has a student population of 3,800 with a further 2,200 students studying its programmes at partner institutions most of which are overseas. Of those studying at Newcastle Business School, 25% of the students are from countries outside the European Union. The School employs 191 staff, of which 120 are academic faculty. On a business level, our wide-ranging international presence opens up exciting career opportunities for our students. And, of course, with such a strong international emphasis across the entire Newcastle Business School experience, our graduates emerge as business-ready and highly employable, wherever in the world they want to live and work.

Today Newcastle Business School is the largest centre of Business and Management in the North of England, and one of the largest Business Schools in the UK.

Newcastle Business School is recognised as a world-class postgraduate learning institution. We offer a wide variety of generalist and specialist postgraduate programmes, and we continually update our portfolio to meet the challenges of today’s rapidly changing and complex economy.

News stories Vipers on course to score in Classroom Professional ice hockey players are swapping the rink for the classroom to perfect their business skills. Newcastle Business School has had a special relationship with the Mobilx Newcastle Vipers professional icehockey team for the past few years. The relationship has seen seven players move from the ice into the classroom to study for The Newcastle Business School MBA, and one player embark on the BA (Hons) Leadership and Management degree.

Prestigious Awards for Journal Achieved A journal co-edited by Newcastle Business School’s Professor Joanne Roberts and Professor George Cairns, RMIT University, Australia, has won two prestigious awards, just five years after it was launched. This year the educational publisher Emerald has awarded Critical Perspectives on International Business its Best New Journal Award and its Outstanding Special Issue Award.

Staff from Newcastle Business School, have devised a new pedagogical learning model to help international students get to grips with the often complex use of English language in academia. Programme Director of Learning Support and Enhancement in Newcastle Business School’s postgraduate area, Dr Diane Sloan, and senior lecturer Elizabeth Porter are rolling out their ‘CEM’ model to meet the academic literacy needs of overseas students. The CEM model has been developed following rigorous research among all the Business School's international postgraduate students and international programme directors, undertaking both focus groups and questionnaires. The model draws on a combination of ‘contextualisation’: making the academic literacy programme more subject-specific, ‘embedding’ the positioning of the programme within the overall academic study programme, and ‘mapping’ the timing of language support to take into account the needs of both tutors and students. The model is now being advocated as an example of good practice within Northumbria University, and trialled at Heriot Watt University with the support of a teaching research and development grant from the Higher Education Academy’s Subject Centre for Business Management, Accountancy and Finance.

programmes. Students also undertake directed study and are expected to develop independent learning skills in order to pursue their own area of academic interest.

The postgraduate experience Our vision for you We are a business school committed to the development of business practitioners and individuals capable of contributing to organisational effectiveness. Underpinning this commitment is an approach of ‘theory into practice’ – we don’t just want you to know more, we want you to be able to do more. Our vision of what we want you to achieve is enshrined in our postgraduate teaching and learning philosophy. At the heart of this is your development as a ‘reflective practitioner’, acquiring a range of critical thinking skills, a high degree of self

8

awareness and a capacity for independent learning. To help you achieve this, we provide a range of learning experiences through the programmes – the management development residential, group work, study trips, a business simulation exercise and all the ongoing learning processes embedded in the day to day study of the subject modules on your programme. In addition to our learning and teaching philosophy we have established a number of goals that we hope you will achieve by the end of the programme – in summary these are that you will be highly knowledgeable about the

theory and practice of international business; that you can think and act strategically; that you have developed a range of leadership skills and knowledge and finally that you have acquired a high level of competence in research and scholarly application.

How we do this We ensure that all our programmes are delivered by professional people – highly qualified academics, many of whom bring significant business management experience to the classroom. This is important in the context of theory into practice.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment – You will experience a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, workshops and presentations. These sessions are designed to help you apply theory to ‘real life’ and be able to critically analyse and make recommendations for appropriate ways forward – for yourself and your organisation. Classroom sessions facilitate knowledge generation, peer interaction, communication and contextual application. Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching process on our

E-Portal and Customised Learning – The e-portal system provides you with electronic access to lecture, seminar and workshop activities, directed learning materials and tests, up-to-date programme announcements, online discussion groups and bulletin boards. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all materials are regularly updated by module tutors and programme leaders and are a valuable source of learning support. For some modules the student learning process is supported by a customised text designed in conjunction with McGraw Hill. Customised texts and learning materials are provided free of charge, and are tailored to meet the needs of our programmes and students.

Induction and Academic Skills Support – You need to be effectively engaged in the learning processes of your programme from day one. Therefore as well as the initial induction at the start of the programmes, we provide ongoing information sessions as the programme progresses as well as academic skills support sessions looking at issues such as report writing, preparing for assignments and exams, presentation skills and getting the most from seminars and lectures.

Management Development Residential – Within the first few weeks of the programme you will attend a weekend residential at a hotel near to Newcastle. The residential provides an opportunity for you to mix with and get to know other students, but the primary focus of the residential is to provide you with opportunities for learning about yourself and identifying a set of personal objectives and learning areas for your future development.

Guest Lectures – In addition to our full-time staff, we regularly invite senior business leaders and academics to the business school to share with you their contemporary experiences of managing and the latest management thinking.

Business Game – Most programmes incorporate a business simulation exercise. In a small team of your fellow students you will take the role of a senior management team running a car manufacturing business in competition with other teams. The decisions you make about product choice, strategy, finance, human resources, research and development, pricing etc will determine how successful your business is. The simulation takes place over a period of weeks allowing a number of key decision points that affect the business outcome. As well as bringing together a wide range of subjects the simulation requires that you work effectively as a member of a team – a crucial skill in management.

Dissertation – The final third of most of our Masters programmes is taken up with a Dissertation. You will explore a contemporary management issue in depth combining academic theory with a real life investigation, using a range of appropriate research skills, culminating in a 15,000 word report. This is a powerful learning experience and demonstrates to us and any future employer, your ability to take a problem, understand it, analyse it, summarise the issues, identify appropriate theory and provide a critical synthesis of the subject.

Postgraduate Student Society (PGSS) – The aim of the Newcastle Business School PGSS is not only to enhance the overall educational experience, but also to facilitate cultural friendships and exchanges. There is a varied programme of social activities and events including field trips to York and Edinburgh plus countryside walks, student presentations and a debating society. All present excellent opportunities not only to build a wide range of social contacts, but also to develop a network for future business. Many of the events and activities are organised by the students themselves.

New Building – September 2007 saw the opening of our new £70 million iconic state-ofthe-art building in the heart of Newcastle City Centre. Known as ‘City Campus East’ and shared with the Schools of Law and Design, this futuristic development comprises 24,000

square metres of purpose designed academic accommodation including classrooms, lecture theatres, hub areas and exhibition space all of which are at the cutting edge of design and technology. You will be studying in one of the best learning environments in the UK. In 2007 the building won The Journal ‘North East Landmark of the Year’ award.

Newcastle Business School Facilities – You will enjoy a dedicated postgraduate suite with teaching rooms, IT labs and a comfortable lounge area where you can work in groups, independently or simply relax over a coffee. If you have your own laptop there is free Wi-Fi throughout the University. In addition there are plenty of desktop PCs available for you to use and the University replacement policy mean that none of the PCs used by our students are more than two years old.

Professional Body Accreditations – We have links with professional bodies and accreditations, which are very important to us. Where possible our programmes are recognised by these professional bodies which gives you the potential for exemptions and fast-track membership when applying for professional qualifications later. Examples include CIM for Marketing and CIPD for Human Resource Management, amongst others.

Newcastle upon Tyne ‘Student City’ Nothing compares with being a student in Newcastle upon Tyne. With two famous universities and a number of further education colleges, there are over 42,000 students in the city. In fact one in every seven people in Newcastle is a student. Northumbria University is located right in the heart of the city. Newcastle Business School, with its state-of-the-art new campus, couldn’t be more central. It’s right on the doorstep for everything – some of the best shopping, dining, nightlife, sport and culture in Britain. And with plenty of good, cheap accommodation within easy reach of the universities, it’s no wonder Newcastle is known as ‘Student City’!

Stunning location – in and out of the city In Newcastle, you really feel you’re part of a vibrant and colourful history that stretches back 2,000 years. This is no bland ‘middle England’ city; it’s the proud capital of the North East of England located on the banks of the legendary River Tyne. In recent years, Newcastle has seen unprecedented growth and regeneration with £170-million invested in the city’s Eldon Square shopping area alone. Newcastle is regularly voted the nation’s ‘Favourite English City-Break Destination’ and the Readers Digest has voted Newcastle ‘Britain’s Friendliest City’. Beyond the city you’ll find some of the most breathtaking and remote countryside and coastline in Britain. To the West and North lies the huge and diverse county of Northumberland with its stunning beaches and wealth of history. Conquered in part by the Romans, Vikings and

12

Normans, Northumberland boasts the world-famous Hadrian’s Wall, part of which runs through Newcastle itself. If you’re hungry for more history, Newcastle is just a short 15 minute train journey from Durham famed for its 900 year old cathedral. The famous historic cities of York and Edinburgh are also within easy reach by direct train.

A great place for... just about everything In a city that never stops, it’s impossible to get bored. In fact you could spend every day (and night) for a month doing something different and still barely scratch the surface. Newcastle is packed with culture – several theatres and museums, the oldest ‘arty’ cinema outside London, classical music, opera and dance. You’ll find numerous art galleries like the international centre for contemporary art, the BALTIC, with its bars, cafés and bookshop. Right next door is the purpose-built music and arts centre, the Sage Gateshead, with its indie, country, folk, jazz and classical music. Newcastle has been voted the 8th Top City for Night Life… in the world! There’s a plethora of pubs, bars, bistros, restaurants and clubs. As you’d expect, the city also supports a thriving live music scene from jazz through to indie and folk. Or for bigger acts, head for the impressive Metro Radio Arena.

Newcastle is shopping heaven, rivalling anywhere in the UK for the sheer variety and quality of its shops. In the city centre there’s a huge choice – from famous chain stores and designer boutiques through to an elegant Victorian arcade, art and craft markets, even a monthly farmers’ market selling delicious local produce. And of course just over the Tyne in Gateshead, there’s the Metro Centre, one of Europe’s largest and most impressive shopping malls and leisure complexes.

In a city that never stops, it’s impossible to get bored

North Run, which attracts over 50,000 participants every Autumn. Only 12 miles from Newcastle is Durham’s Cricket ground, the Riverside, home to several international test matches and fans of ice hockey and basketball won’t be disappointed either.

Getting around

As you’d expect in a city dedicated to sport, Newcastle has a wide range of leisure centres and other sporting facilities. The city is just a 20 minute drive from the coast making it easily accessible for water sports like kayaking, surfing and sailing.

Newcastle also has a modern metro rail system which is the envy of the rest of the UK. Linked with a reliable and regular bus network, getting around Newcastle is cheap and fast. Newcastle Business School is located right next to Manors Metro stop.

Newcastle is very easy to get to. It’s under three hours from London by train and just an hour from Edinburgh. Newcastle has its own international airport and regular ferry services to and from Northern Europe.

Winning sport Newcastle lives and breathes sport. The city is the home of Newcastle United. Sunderland and Middlesborough football clubs are not too far away. Rugby fans are also well catered for with the Newcastle Falcons rugby ground nearby. Newcastle plays host to one of the largest half marathons in the world, the Great

accommodation

Home away from home Northumbria has a wide range of accommodation to suit the needs of our diverse student community, available to most first year students who apply in good time. Most University accommodation is selfcatering and many residences include internet access in study bedrooms. The most common type is where you have your own bedroom and share a kitchen/living room and bathroom with three to six other students. Residences are situated on or near the University campuses. The newest residences have bedrooms with private bathrooms and account for about 45% of accommodation. In addition, there are a smaller number of traditional halls with single rooms on each floor. Some halls are self-catering with shared kitchens, while others have meals provided.

If you prefer to find your own accommodation, there are various options close by, from upmarket Jesmond, with a wide range of bars and eateries, to the less expensive but equally popular Heaton and Sandyford. There are also lots of flats and flat-shares available in the City Centre and less expensive lets in many other parts of Newcastle.

Meet the team Representatives from the Newcastle Business School postgraduate team.

Newcastle Business School’s postgraduate programmes are delivered by a team of highly qualified academic staff with considerable professional experience in management practice and management education. Our staff are also actively engaged in research, consultancy and training activities with leading organisations.

“The tutors were great in mixing their practical and academic knowledge in the subject area. They were very supportive and easily approachable throughout.” Dipen Majmundar

Our staff portfolio has an increasingly international feel with staff from a number of different countries employed by the Business School and bringing to their teaching a range of different cultural perspectives and international knowledge. Most of our staff are involved in our international partnerships and have an empathetic understanding of the needs and challenges of our postgraduate students, particularly those from overseas. As a result teaching is always relevant and current. Being a large Business School there’s always someone to turn to – Programme Directors who look after clusters of programmes, the Programme Leader for your course,

individual Module Tutors and the administrative support team, particularly the dedicated Programme Administrator. You will be supported by a personal tutor, normally your programme leader, who has the dual role of advising on academic matters and offering pastoral support. In addition, the administrative team offers a dedicated call in and support service which means that on a day to day basis you can be assured that there is a source of advice, help and information as required, whether it’s to deal with personal issues or academic processes. We want you to get the most from your time with us and the support mechanisms available are one way of ensuring that happens.

Careers & Employment Service

The service advertises graduate vacancies with local, regional and multi-national firms. Many companies regularly visit the campus and Newcastle Business School graduates are in high demand – part of the reason for our impressive statistics of our students finding appropriate employment soon after graduating, and sometimes even before! A wide range of graduate positions are advertised on www.northumbria.ac.uk/gradvacs. The Careers & Employment Service provides practical advice on job search strategies and offers support for each stage of the selection process with a range of multimedia resources and individual guidance sessions.

Whether you’re looking for part-time jobs while you study, or to set your career on the path to success, you’re well looked after at Northumbria University Careers & Employment Service

18

Northumbria’s Careers & Employment Service offers first class help with career planning, CVs, job applications and interview techniques. There is a team of Careers Advisers, (with a dedicated Careers Adviser for international students) on hand for you to consult. Advisers can help all students and graduates with choosing a career and understanding the labour market. There is also information and

support for international students who are either considering staying in the UK after graduation or returning to their home country or elsewhere. The Careers Centre is a well-stocked facility with a full range of information resources for students and graduates to support researching career options. There are also job search related workshops as well as an employer events programme.

The Careers & Employment Service advertise a wide range of jobs suitable for students in term-time and vacations – the University recommends students do not work more than 15 hours per week during term time as research suggests this may damage the student’s study experience and all jobs pay at least the national minimum wage – and many pay considerably more. Recently advertised student employment opportunities include: Student Mailing Assistants £6.61 per hour Market Research Interviewers £5.80 - £7.25 per hour Interpreters and translators at £8 - £10 per hour Office Assistant £10 per hour

Some employers give presentations on campus about the opportunities they offer, recent visitors included KPMG, IBM, the NHS, Hewlett Packard, Cap Gemini and others including firms from the legal and construction areas.

Collections Assistant £6.82 per hour

Many students also want to work part-time during their studies, whether to improve their language and communication skills, to gain experience in a UK business setting, or simply to earn a bit of extra money so that they can travel and explore the region.

£7.56 per hour

Newcastle upon Tyne is relatively unusual for a large UK city in that during term-time one in seven people living within the city centre area are students. As a result many businesses have come to depend on students, not just as customers, but as valued employees.

Bar, waiting and front of house staff £6.00 per hour Student Marketeer £8.00 per hour Multilingual Outbound Customer Service Executives

Jobs are frequently advertised in retail work, and for bar and waiting staff as well as many other opportunities. Positions are also advertised on behalf of Northumbria university departments including sports assistants, assisting at University events such as open days and administrative posts. Opportunities may be for regular on-going work whilst some are one-off jobs and there is also information on volunteering opportunities available.

admissions

Admissions Information We accept students from a variety of backgrounds and for many of our programmes it is not necessary to have studied business before. In general we are looking for students who have demonstrated the academic ability to study at postgraduate level. Usually this will be by means of having a good undergraduate degree. Students who have such a degree from a UK university will usually be expected to have achieved at least a second division honours degree. Students with degrees from other countries will be expected to have achieved a similar level of attainment through whichever system they have studied under. On occasions we will accept students with slightly lower qualifications where they can demonstrate through relevant work experience that they will be able to cope with this high level of academic study - such applications are assessed on an individual basis. The Newcastle Business School MBA accepts students with a good degree in any subject but has the additional requirement of requiring students to have a minimum of three years work experience after their degree where they can demonstrate that they have had a supervisory or management role. Students who want to obtain an MBA, but who don't currently have sufficient appropriate work experience, can undertake an MSc programme and then complete the conversion programme detailed on page 27 at a later stage when they have the work experience. Note that this conversion is not available to graduates of equivalent masters degrees from other universtities.

English Language Ability to study and communicate in English is one of the most important factors in the successful completion of these programmes. Students for whom English is not their first language will be required to demonstrate a sufficiently high level of English to be able to study at this level. This will usually be by means of a recognised English qualification such as IELTS (to an overall level of 6.5 with normally not less than 6.0 in any element) or TOEFL (575 paper-based, 90 internetbased). Northumbria University has provision for students who need to improve their English language prior to study with courses ranging from summer schools to full year long programmes and assessments from those programmes are accepted as an alternative to IELTS or TOEFL.

Application Procedure

Scholarships

Applications should be made directly to the University and can be made online by following the links provided at www.newcastlebusinessschool.co.uk. UK and EU applicants can apply to the central University Admissions office. Other applicants can apply either to the University International Office in the UK or to one of our international offices abroad. Details are on the back of this brochure.

International students are automatically considered for scholarships on the basis of their application. These are allocated primarily to students from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal and PR China although some are also given to students from other countries. In almost all cases the maximum scholarship offered is £1000 and the criteria are that the applicant shows particularly strong academic potential (i.e. beyond meeting minimum entry standards).

Most of the courses in this brochure last for one full year - for example a student commencing in September will complete their studies the following August. There is a process available to convert an existing NBS Masters to an MBA, please see page 27 for more details. All courses in this brochure offer a September start; a reduced range of programmes offer a January start. See www.newcastlebusinessschool.co.uk for details.

The MBA Difference

“The Newcastle business school MBA is not just about excellence in business education, it is also about developing an individual’s personal and professional skills within an international context. We build upon your previous education and work experience and enable you to develop your career not only with a highly regarded MBA, but also as a confident and independent manager.”

“Newcastle Business School offers you the chance to study a Masters in Business and Management in the company of a truly international group of students and academic staff providing a diverse and interesting learning environment that equips you particularly for management careers in today’s global market.”

An MBA is the world’s most widely recognised business and management qualification. However it is often misunderstood, so it is important that you make the right choice when considering the range of postgraduate management qualifications on offer. There are many MBAs offered around the world that are just another master’s degree in business. We believe our MBA is different and offers a development experience that helps you to prepare for the next phase of your career and to give you the skills and confidence to progress to high levels in your chosen career. We offer different ways to help you achieve your objectives, but all are designed around this core philosophy. Our MBA requires you to already have a minimum of three years work experience to ensure you can maximise the learning opportunities available and be in a classroom with like-minded people. We use a variety of learning and development methods including seminars, tutorials, visits, residentials and guest lectures. You bring your own experiences in business to the learning process, and have the space to reflect and develop your strengths and eliminate your

weaknesses, and in the process establish a personal development plan for the future. We offer alternative routes to an MBA for different types of students. The main programme is the one year full-time Newcastle Business School MBA for those who already have the experience. There is also a European MBA that gives you the chance to broaden your international awareness by studying part of the programme in France and to gain two separate MBAs in the process. For those who aspire to an MBA but don’t yet have the relevant work experience we also offer the opportunity to take any of our MSc programmes and at a later stage undertake a conversion programme to MBA by online support. This is a great opportunity to boost your career after a few years of experience.

“The first thing I appreciated about the Newcastle Business School MBA was its great cultural mix. Students from a variety of different countries participate in the MBA programme. I really enjoyed this aspect of the programme as it allowed me to learn how business is dealt with on an international level. Secondly, Northumbria University has fantastic infrastructure and students have access to teaching facilities, an 8 storey high library with numerous books available on almost every topic you can think of and great recreational facilities such as the Students’ Union and the gym. Newcastle Business School itself gave me a sense of belonging which I appreciated. The MBA programme really enhanced my analytical and research skills and I feel has really helped me in my career. I am now running four private limited companies as a Director engaged in sectors such as Building and Construction, Manufacturing and Marketing. In a nutshell, I found that the Newcastle Business School MBA programme enhanced my ability to understand complex business issues and helped my understanding on how best to effectively manage different business functions such as finance, marketing and human resources.” Sid Sharma MBA, Graduate

The overall aim of the programme is to enable you, through the development of your managerial and leadership capabilities, to assist or direct your organisation to become more effective and efficient in a rapidly changing, complex and knowledge based economy. The philosophy of the programme derives from the principles of reflective practice and experiential learning. You will engage with principles and theories of business, management and organisation, which will provide you with frameworks for reviewing, reflecting, analysing and critiquing existing individual and organisational practices. The outcome of this process will be a critical appreciation in building strategic capabilities and to understand contemporary management and organisational issues in a context of change. As a Newcastle Business School MBA student you will diagnose problems, research and retrieve information and apply the insight from powerful conceptual models to develop and evaluate solutions. By the end of the programme, you will have become a reflective and strategic thinker with an international outlook and a body of contemporary knowledge in skills relating to business and organisations, organisational research and change management.

24

The final third of the programme consists of a supervised individual research study in the form of either a dissertation or a work-based action research project undertaken on behalf of an organisation. In addition, induction, academic skills support and dissertation preparation sessions are provided alongside the programme to support your learning. Newcastle Business School will pay for participants enrolling on this programme to become studying members of the Chartered Management Institute (for the duration of the programme). This includes access to extensive business/management information covering theory and practice, personal/career development guidance, autorecording online CPD Scheme, a team of professional research staff and much more. Graduates from this programme will receive professional recognition at a minimum Associate level (ACMI), or with 3 years practical managerial experience at full Member level (MCMI), subject to the individual paying an annual fee. Those able to achieve Member status may also progress to Chartered Manager (CMgr) status.

Alexey Mordashov – CEO Severstal “My own experience on the Newcastle Business School MBA and subsequent management development training programme has been a major factor in modernising the Severstal Steel Company into one of the largest and most profitable organisations in Russia”

The MBA remains the best-known management qualification in the world. It has the potential to help you get that new job, accelerate your career, prepare you for promotion, or take a significant career change. The opportunities are endless. Recent graduates have often returned to their home countries to senior management positions (including General Manager and Managing Director). Alternatively graduates have started academic careers in the area of business and management or undertook further study at doctoral level in the form of PhD or DBA qualifications. However, it is not the MBA on its own that will open doors for you. It is the combination of the programme and your own personal characteristics that will make the difference, which is why we combine academic rigour with a focus on personal awareness and personal development on our MBA programme.

PROGRAMME CONTENT AND STRUCTURE

“Studying for the Newcastle Business School MBA was a great learning experience, as it was a privilege to be taught by well renowned subject experts and teachers who possess impeccable knowledge and expertise. In addition to the training sessions within the classroom, the external company visits played a very important role as they enabled us to relate theory taught in class to the practices and procedures carried out by various multinational organisations in the real world. This ultimately made studying very enjoyable and educational at the same time.”

Dual European MBA WHO IS THIS PROGRAMME FOR?

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The Dual European MBA programme is designed for those students who wish to work towards an MBA that incorporates academic study in two European locations: the United Kingdom and France. Newcastle Business School and IDRAC have had 19 successful years of working together at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Students will study modules that comprise the respective MBA programmes at both partner institutions.

Newcastle Business School’s MBA conversion is specifically designed for students wishing to top up from their existing NBS Masters qualification to the Newcastle Business School MBA. With a Masters degree from Newcastle Business School complimented by a minimum of three years post-masters work experience are able to apply.

IDRAC, France

PROGRAMME CONTENT AND STRUCTURE The overall aim of the programme is to enable you to develop your managerial and leadership capabilities to help your organisation in becoming more efficient and effective within an increasingly competitive and dynamic economy. The Dual European MBA lasts twelve months, covering three academic semesters. The first two semesters comprise the taught component of the programme with the final semester covering the dissertation/project element of the programme, which completes the MBA. Depending on which route you decide to take, the first semester will either be spent at IDRAC, Lyon or Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University. The second semester and dissertation period will then be spent at the other institution. You will spend approximately 3-4 months in the first location and the remainder of the year in the other, thus providing a flexible and tailored education that is appropriate to your career choice. This programme is taught in English throughout. The Dual European MBA is driven by the principles of reflective practice and experiential learning. It is designed to engender deep learning that uses innovative delivery methods, combining an academic and professional approach and one that is rooted in critical thinking. To achieve this, the Dual European MBA award is structured to encourage thinking that is based upon reasoning and evidence rather than inference and assumption. You will be encouraged to embrace the twin approach of learning-for-life and lifelong learning. You will be intelligent, articulate, confident, and motivated to share your experiences with others and commit to a challenging educational experience that will help you understand your strengths and weaknesses and what you have to offer as a future manager. You will engage with the principles and theories of business, management, leadership and organisations to develop frameworks for reviewing, reflecting, analysing and critiquing existing individual and organisational practices. The outcome of this process will be a critical appreciation, in building strategic capabilities and to understand contemporary business and management issues in a context of change. It will develop participants as leaders and managers to add value to the organisation. The programme, in terms of its underlying postgraduate goals embodies the principles of reflective practice, critical thinking and reflexivity.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The MBA remains the best-known management qualification in the world. It has the potential to help you get that new job, accelerate your career, prepare you for promotion, or take a significant career change. The opportunities are endless. However, it is not the MBA on its own that will open doors for you. It is the combination of the programme and your own personal characteristics that will make the difference, which is why we combine academic rigour with a focus on personal awareness and personal development on our MBA programme.

DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS Students on the MBA programme enjoy all of the generic aspects of the Newcastle Business School postgraduate experience. In addition, the European Dual MBA programme has a number of distinctive features: • The core aspects of the programme comprise of a range of subject modules, the majority of which are unique to the suite of MBA programmes in Newcastle Business School. The MBA students are taught as a standalone group of students. • The opportunity to study in two desirable European locations – Lyon and Newcastle upon Tyne.

From 2008, we have offered the MBA conversion to students from our ‘MSc Business with suite’ of programmes and our MA IBA (now MSc Global Business Management). From 2011 it is planned to offer an MBA Conversion Programme to all of our Masters programmes*.

STAGE 1 – STUDY THE RELEVANT MASTERS PROGRAMME For those students wishing to undertake this route you must first successfully complete any of the Masters programmes in this brochure, with the exception of the MA MSc Multi-Disciplinary Design Innovation. There are two routes to convert your programme to an MBA. The first is for those students who have completed a Generalist Masters, that is the MSc Business with Management or the MSc Global Business Management (and its predecessor MAIBA). The second is for those who have completed any of the specialist MSc programmes.

STAGE 2 – RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE At Newcastle Business School, the emphasis has always been about putting business theory into practice. As a result all our programmes are designed to make the transition from study to the real world as seamless as possible. Previous Masters graduates have gone on to work in the pharmaceutical, banking and retail industries as well as management positions all over the world, in

both the public and private sectors. For our MBA programme there is a requirement that students should have achieved exposure to a range of management and supervisory activity, normally a minimum of 3 years from completion of the taught programme.

STAGE 3 – THE MBA CONVERSION PROGRAMME – ONLINE STUDY Once you have completed stages 1 and 2 you can apply for the MBA conversion. Entry to the MBA is simple and flexible. As soon as you feel ready, just let us know. If you originally studied the MSc Business with Management programme or the MSc Global Business Management (MAIBA), the MBA conversion comprises a 60 credit Continuous Professional Development (CPD) portfolio based on your managerial experiences since graduation and provides linkage between the academic theory developed on your Masters and your current practitioner experience. This must be submitted within one calendar year of enrolment on the programme. The CPD portfolio can be completed with no need to attend campus lectures or seminars, but we would encourage you to visit us at some point in your study period. Because your supervisor is online you can study anywhere, at anytime and at your own pace. So it fits perfectly around your work and leisure commitments. All guidance material for the portfolio is provided. If you originally studied one of the specialist Masters degrees then the process of completing an MBA is the same as above but will require a preceding period of study in the UK based on a mapping exercise to determine if, and which, additional modules from the MBA will need to be completed. Once we have our Distance Learning MBA completed (see page 41) it will be possible for those with Specialist Masters to complete the whole of the conversion programme at a distance.

• The management development residential is shared with the part-time MBA programme, thus allowing the full-time MBA students an opportunity to meet and study alongside their British counterparts who are employed locally to Newcastle. • An International Study Mission, which in recent times has taken place in South Africa and in locations in Central Europe, allowing the students to visit a range of multinational organisations. Students participate in a series of guest lectures, which provide the basis for group work and primary research involving the participating organisations. • Students can undertake a group consultancy project, in a “real organisation” and supported by Newcastle Business School as their programme option, thus permitting access to, and work with a host local organisation. • For students with appropriate organisational contacts, the MBA has an alternative to the traditional Masters dissertation, in the form of a Work-Based Action Research Project.

which developed my self-awareness and encouraged me to reflect on my personal approach to group work and leadership. Setting personal objectives encouraged me to focus on the areas which would help me to develop as a manager and I was able to achieve most of these during the course of the programme.

Dr Gregory Ludwig joined Newcastle Business School in 2005 and teaches Strategic Management and International Business, both at Postgraduate and Undergraduate Levels. His current role is Senior Lecturer in Strategic Management and as one of the two Programme Leaders of the MSc Business with suite of programmes he has the joint role of the operational manager responsible for the largest Masters Programme at Newcastle Business School. Prior to his academic career at NBS, he gained management work experience in Europe (HWS/Terex). Gregory is an active researcher and his papers on Dynamic Capabilities have been disseminated at some of the most prestigious International Conferences in the field, for example at the British Academy of Management (BAM) and Strategic Management Society (SMS) Annual Conferences.

A The residential weekend was a really worthwhile experience

Q Why did you choose to study at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University? A I chose Newcastle Business School for a number of reasons: the fantastic facilities; the opportunity to convert to an MBA and the constant focus on applying theory to practice throughout the course.

Q If you had one piece of advice to give to prospective postgraduate students thinking of studying at Newcastle Business School what would it be? A Be prepared! Good time management is essential as it can be difficult to catch up if you fall behind. Always try to stay one step ahead so that you can cope with last-minute setbacks or additional work you weren’t expecting. I can honestly say that the more effort you put in from the start, the easier and more rewarding it is.

NEW PATHWAYS FOR 2011 – SEE PAGE 41

Working in a large, modern, international organisation, a mediumsized company or even a small start-up firm requires a range of business capabilities. The most valuable employees are those who have not only a sound knowledge and understanding of the various parts of a business but those who are quick learners and team players with leadership potential. The MSc Business with Management programme will give students both the general business knowledge and understanding as well as the personal skills needed for a wide variety of roles.

WHO IS THE PROGRAMME FOR? The programme has been developed for recent graduates in non-business disciplines who want to add a business dimension to their undergraduate specialism. This programme has been very popular and has recently been extended by the addition of several pathways. Students can now choose between a general pathway with a wide variety of optional modules and a specialist pathway in which around half of the programme is concentrated on one functional area. This is very attractive to students who are interested in a particular area of business (e.g. marketing) but who need a more general introduction to business than is available in a specialist Masters programme. Students choosing one of the pathways have the opportunity to carry out independent research in their preferred specialist area.

Business Environment and Strategic Management 20 credits

PROGRAMME CONTENT AND STRUCTURE The programme is designed around a set of modules that are common to all pathways. Students study alongside their peers by pathway throughout the Programme. These modules cover general business functions, strategic management and organisational analysis. These modules also guide you towards the achievement of the generic postgraduate goals of strategic awareness, developing leadership potential and understanding the theory and practice of international business. In the second semester you will be given the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of business by choosing one of the pathways. If you prefer to maintain as wide a choice of subject areas as possible, you can choose the Business with Management pathway. In the remainder of the programme you will complete your research and writing up of your dissertation. Every student has a personal research supervisor and will be required to submit an assessed research proposal prior to embarking on the dissertation itself.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates on the programme have joined a wide range of businesses, including graduate training schemes. A significant number of graduates have gone back to work for a family business or even started up their own businesses.

DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS The most distinctive characteristics of the programme are the wide range of backgrounds that we can accept and the great flexibility of choice offered to students on the programme to suit individual preference. it’s all about taking your studies into your own hands and deciding the amount of hard work you want to put in. A I found the atmosphere at Newcastle Business School very professional and friendly. I especially enjoyed working in seminar groups which allowed us to discuss our thoughts with fellow students and analyse theory learned in lectures. The discussions in lectures and seminars also raised my awareness of cultural differences and I am much more critical than I was at the beginning of my studies. I challenge views much more than I used to.

Q How did you find the Management Development Residential benefited your overall learning experience? A The Management Development Residential was a wonderful new experience and allowed everyone to get to know each other more. For me it was especially interesting to work in groups and find out how people perceive me. I also learned during group tasks how I react in challenging situations. I discovered several opportunities to improve my academic performance and identified personal and academic strengths.

“As we move towards an ever more demanding low- carbon global economy where organizations will be required to carefully monitor their carbon output, much greater emphasis on the manufacturing and supply chain processes will be needed in all types of industries – manufacturing, retail or service. Students graduating from the continuously evolving and ‘real world’ focussed MSc GLSCM at NBS will therefore be well placed to take advantage of these opportunities.”

WHO IS THE PROGRAMME FOR?

This programme is designed to focus on specific issues recognised within the industry to be the main challenges and is supported by a range of core NBS management modules that facilitate research and personal skills development. Prof David Oglethorpe

David’s main research interests and knowledge lie in the food sector and prior to joining NBS, David worked in the City as Director for Economics and Research for company delivering supply-chain solutions to the food sector.

David joined NBS in 2002 with lecturing responsibility for Logistics and Supply Chain Management and currently holds the position of Programme Leader for the MSc Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management programme. Organisations have focused on the area of logistics and supply chain management to gain greater competitive advantage through faster delivery and operational efficiencies often through strategic partnerships and alliances. The modern consumer not only wants high quality goods at the right price but also at the right time. With greater customisation and the growing demand to meet diverse customer preferences and tastes, the need to balance high levels of customer service against the cost and performance of the distribution function is of paramount importance for any commercial organisation.

PROGRAMME CONTENT AND STRUCTURE

Semester 3

Semester 2

Semester 1

The programme will develop each student’s creativity, teamworking and leadership skills as well as their knowledge of the core activities of the complimentary disciplines. There are three 20 credit contextual modules running through semesters one and two

and students are directed to take the two of these that complement their existing knowledge. (e.g. a Business graduate joining the programme would be directed to take the Technology Context and Design Context modules). All students engage in the semester one and two module Developing the Interdisciplinary Self (20 credits) which is designed to encourage a reflective practice approach to learning throughout the multidisciplinary programme. The action learning based ‘problem/solution’ modules provide the basis for undertaking increasingly complex team-based projects working with, and supported by, external collaborating organisations. The overriding ethos surrounding these modules is one of exploration and experimentation in which individual students will mix within the cohort community to ensure that they work and share learning with a wide variety of their peers. The Integration Project is a major piece of work and whilst this project is undertaken collaboratively, each individual will produce a supporting document that outlines, and reflects upon, their individual contribution.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Students who have graduated from this programme have been successful in establishing their own enterprises, whilst others have gained employment in product development, innovation research and marketing design, both in the UK and international organisations. Furthermore, some students have successfully gained funded PhD studentships in UK universities.

DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS The host schools have a long established track record of working collaboratively with industrial, commercial and public-sector organisations. This close partnership brings together a new broad community of students, academics and client organisations working on projects that promote creativity and innovation in solving real business issues.

STOP PRESS!!! At the time of going to print a number of new programme developments are underway in the business school and we want to take this opportunity to tell you about them. At the moment they are in the planning stage but we hope to have them up and running by September 2011, so if you like the sound of any of these please register an interest by contacting [email protected] and we will keep you updated on progress.

MSc Sustainable Business The sustainability agenda is wide ranging and far reaching. In the business world sustainability can refer to financial and economic viability, but also increasingly it relates to how to operate and manage to achieve competitive advantage across a set of emerging environmental and social pressures. There is a need for graduates equipped to work with these pressures and operate in a significantly different business world where environmental and social compliance and performance are central to business strategy. This new degree offered by Newcastle Business School provides the opportunity to examine how to deliver Sustainable Business by understanding the synergies between good business practice and positive environmental and social responses. It will allow students to appreciate the complex pressures facing business and how to achieve results across the triple bottom line of economy, environment and society. The course will introduce students to the global business sustainability agenda taking an international perspective on sustainability policy, regulation and business practice. It will then move through a series of specialist modules introducing concepts of sustainable systems, understanding environmental decision support and scenario planning, evaluating the meaning and nature of business ethics and corporate social responsibility and focusing on the business to consumer relationship as a key driver for responding to the market.

The course will also include specialist modules allowing students to focus on business functions in more depth. Students will get the opportunity to study Sustainable Finance, Sustainable Supply Chains or Sustainable Marketing where core competencies in each area will be combined with the central focus of managing sustainability. This new degree offers an exciting and forward looking opportunity, which will equip students with the skills to deal with and compete in a future business environment that will have to deliver a range of sustainable outcomes. A range of management roles will increasingly require the skills provided by this exciting new programme.

Leaving the last word to our students

Mohit Gupta – India I chose to do an MBA to aid my future career prospects but also to aid my personal development. The experience of studying the Newcastle Business School MBA was not only a great experience but it has helped encourage me to reflect on my managerial and leadership skills. The programme has challenged me and helped me understand contemporary management and organisational issues.

Polina Elagina – Russia I have really loved every minute of my postgraduate course. It is a much higher level of study to that of an undergraduate degree, which brings you to a new level of thinking. The academic staff are great; they always guide and consult you. They are really very supportive during lectures, seminars and workshops, and they are also glad to meet with you if you have a query, which is very helpful. I would really recommend trying to gain all that you can from Newcastle Business School. It is an amazing place with amazing people and many opportunities around. So be active and involve yourself to the maximum level, you have no idea what a great journey you will then engage in.

Vishveshwar Gaddam – India Prior to moving to UK for further education I was working for Dell. When I left my job to come to the UK to study, I was given the opportunity to go back to Dell at any time. However since coming to the UK, I have started working parttime for T-Mobile as an IT helpdesk coordinator. As a direct impact of being a student at Newcastle Business School I’ve begun to see the bigger picture of business needs and understand the necessity and importance HR policy has within large organisations.

Teddy Rabida – Philippines Newcastle Business School has very welldesigned and organised teaching methods supported by state-of-the-art facilities and learning resources. Right at the beginning, from enrolment, the administrative staff and academics were consistent in their efforts to offer every student a great learning experience. Staff were very helpful to international students. The Postgraduate Student Society (PGSS) is a great way of meeting other likeminded people and make some excellent friendships. The PGSS includes current students as well as Newcastle Business School Alumni. It opened the door to a wide network of successful graduates.

Andrew Stevenson – UK Come ready to meet new people from different backgrounds. Organisations have employees from different cultures and so do universities. Coming to university is an excellent opportunity to learn about other cultures. Students who communicate with students from other cultures and countries leave the course with a higher standard of English. Newcastle is a great place to live. The staff, students and the local community will make you feel at home. The dissertation is flexible and can be done in England, your home country or any country so there is the opportunity to research a company you are familiar with.

42

Yankun Zhao – China I’ve enjoyed taking part in key activities on the MBA, for instance the management development residential, which provided the chance to learn about myself and set a list of personal objectives and learning areas for future development. Plus the Business Game – a business simulation exercise that covered areas such as strategy, finance, human resources, research and development, whereby we worked in small teams to take the role of a senior management team running a car manufacturing business in competition with others. Through this activity it helped improved my planning and finance skills as well as teamwork and leadership qualities.

Kevin Welsh – UK The new campus has created a comfortable and spacious learning environment that allows students and tutors to interact on a daily basis. The modules taught not only provide a comprehensive range of topics relating to Supply Chain Management and its future direction, but also cover areas such as self analysis and personal development which provides students with the skills required to become a successful manager.

Rebecca Andreau – Cyprus I’ve really enjoyed the fact that I have met so many people from different corners of the world. I have established very good friendships and it has been interesting to find out how many things you can learn from various cultures.
