INTRODUCTION

COACHING

Welcome to Southend Diving

The provision of all diving tuition and training is provided by Parkwood Community Leisure and is directed by professional Head Coach Damian Ball.

Southend Diving was formed in March 2011 to give divers participating in Parkwood Community Leisure’s Diving Programme an avenue to compete. The club is managed by a small committee of volunteers voted in at an Annual General Meeting and raises funds to support competitive diving.

Parkwood Community Leisure’s diving programme provides Learn to Dive classes followed by a series of training squads that are designed to train competitive diving for grass root beginners to International standards.

When divers begin competing, they must become a registered member of an amateur club. Southend Diving is registered to the sports governing body, the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). Although Southend Diving and Parkwood Community Leisure are separate organisations they are closely linked and work in partnership to provide the very best diving opportunities to the Southend community.

A training squad booklet is also available which provides information about the training squads including a detailed structure and the criteria for movement between squads. Parkwood Community Leisure’s Diving programme provides sessions for children, teenagers and adults. The coaching team are all full qualified, highly experienced and motivated towards their own personal development.

This booklet is a guide to how the club aspect of your diving training works and will also provides other information that you should find useful about the sport of diving.

FUND RAISING

WELFARE Southend Diving has adopted the ASA Child Safeguarding Policy set out in the ASA Wave Power document. Southend Diving are committed to your welfare and if you are concerned about any aspect of what is happening to you while you are at club events, either due to behaviour of adults or other young people, you can speak to your parents, Welfare Officer or any of the coaching team., who will help you deal with the concern appropriately. You can also contact the Swimline help line to talk about your concerns with a person who understands swimming and diving and the welfare of children and young people. Swimline is contactable on 0808 100 4001. You will be asked to leave a number where a swimliner can call you back within 24 hours. This number will also access the NSPCC/Childline help line number; if you need to talk to someone immediately just hang on until your call is answered. Southend Diving does not condone bullying of any kind, by adults or juniors, and has an anti-bullying policy which is also displayed on the notice board and available on the club website.

Sometimes there may be 3 or more away trips in one season and this can be a tough financial burden for some families. Southend Diving often organises fundraising events to buy new equipment, train volunteers and support away trips. Southend Diving are always looking for more people to get involved and help with organising fundraising events or even just coming forward and sharing any ideas from other clubs or groups that you may be involved in. The more people involved then the more the club can help you in return.

Southend Diving expects all our divers to behave in an appropriate manner to their coaches, all club helpers, fellow divers and all adults and young people you have contact with at competitions. Southend Diving has an athletes code of conduct that you and your parents will be asked to sign.

PHYSICAL CONTACT Further to recent advice, Southend Diving are required to inform you that there are aspects of our coaching, which require a “hands on” technique. This type of physical contact between coaches and divers will only be used for the following reasons: • • • •

Where it is essential to support the diver during the early stages of learning a skill for safety reasons To develop the skill & technique (e.g. placing the diver in the correct position/posture) To prevent an injury (e.g. pushing them away from the poolside if, during the process of the dive the coach considers them to be too close to the poolside) To treat an injury (only relates to staff who are first aid qualified)

Please let us know on joining Southend Diving, if you are uncomfortable with any aspect of this coaching technique.

COMPETITIONS The first stage Your first introduction to competitive diving will usually be our very own in house club championships. This will give new members an opportunity to try a competition in a relaxed and fun environment and will also allow more experienced members an opportunity to show off their diving skills to friends and family.

Regular competitors As divers progress through the squad structure run by Parkwood Community Leisure, Southend Diving will seek out appropriate competitive opportunities linked to your squad and your ability. COMPETITIONS One day events Some competitions will only require you to be present for one or part of a day. In these situations it is the responsibility of parents to get their children to and from competitions. Usually this will be events held within the Region. Southend Diving is not responsible for arranging transport or chaperoning divers during these types of competitions.

Multi day events or away trips Many of the diving events that Southend Diving participate in are spread out all over the Great Britain and sometimes Europe. The club often provides organised trips to these events. These trips are organised by experienced Team Managers and are fully supervised by CRB checked chaperones. Divers will train together, travel, stay and socialise together. This is a great way for divers to experience being part of a team.

SOUTHEND DIVING MERCHANDISE

Polo shirts are supplied to each Club member as part of the first year membership.

All other club merchandise is available to view via the club website

Club kit order forms are available in the dry dive gym or via the link on the club website.

Divers that are selected for an organised team trip to away competitions must travel and stay with the team. These trips are organised for the divers and team staff only, although we encourage parents to come along and support the club it is their responsibility to organise their own transport and accommodation. To help with safety and behaviour standards all divers and team staff must sign and comply with the latest codes of conduct provided by Southend Diving

DO’S FOR DIVING PARENTS Do for yourself: • Get enormous pleasure from your children’s participation, but do not become overly ego-involved • Try to enjoy yourself at competitions. Your unhappiness can cause your child to feel guilty • Look relaxed, calm, positive and energized when watching your child train and compete. Your attitude influences how your child feels and performs • Have a life of your own outside of your child’s sports participation Do with other parents: • Make friends with other parents at events • Volunteer as much as you can. Youth sport depends upon the time and energy of involved parents • Police your ranks: Work with other parents to ensure that all parents behave appropriately at practices and competitions Do with coaches: • Leave the coaching to the coaches • Give them any support they need to help them do their jobs better • Inform them of relevant issues at home that might affect your child at practice • Inquire about the progress of your children. You have a right to know • Make coaches your allies Do for your Children: • Provide guidance for your children, but do not force or pressure them • Emphasise fun, skill development and other benefits of participation • Show interest in their participation, help them get to practice, attend competitions, ask questions • Provide a healthy perspective to help children understand success and failure • Emphasise and reward effort rather than results • Intervene if your child’s behaviour is unacceptable during practice or competitions • Understand that your child will need a break occasionally • Give your child some space if needed, Part of sports participation involves figuring things out for themselves • Keep a sense of humour. If your having fun, so will your child • Provide regular encouragement
