Welcome to Larne Music Festival 2014 Welcome to Larne Music Festival. Founded in the 1920s the Festival enjoyed many successful years until the 1950s when changing trends meant that its popularity fell away. In 1999 a group of music enthusiasts revived Larne Music Festival and it has grown into today’s vibrant, friendly four-day event, whose chief aim is to offer encouragement. This is accomplished by the input of our excellent Adjudicators who are of the highest calibre – please see dates and details below. We are pleased to welcome our adjudicators: Wednesday 30 April: Robin Hewitt – Instrumental Thursday 1 May:

William Cairns, MBE - Pianoforte

Friday 2 May:

Diane Creighton - Choral

Saturday 3 May:

Ian Dinsmore - Traditional

THANKS The Executive Committee would like to express sincere gratitude to Larne Borough Council for their invaluable support, and to all those who contribute to our Friends of the Festival scheme. This is greatly appreciated. Thanks are also extended to the Kirk Session of First Larne Presbyterian Church for the use of their excellent facilities.

The Adjudicators Instrumental Robin Hewitt will adjudicate the Strings, Brass and Woodwind Classes on Wednesday, and is well qualified to do so. He was appointed Principal Tutor at the City of Belfast School of Music in 1990 retiring in 2002 and was elected to the executive of the Federation of Music Services, as Northern Ireland representative. Robin has adjudicated at many festivals including the NI Young Musician of the Year, Sligo International Choral, Hollywood and Portadown Music Festivals. Robin will also be Adjudicator for the Brass and Woodwind Classes which will be held on Wednesday afternoon. Pianoforte The pianoforte classes will be adjudicated on Thursday by William Cairns MBE. A former Head of Music at Belfast High School, Billy Cairns is still very much involved in Musical Education as a G.C.S.E. examiner and also as an adjudicator at musical festivals. He acted as conductor and musical director of the former “Cavalcade of Song” which brought together choirs and musical talent from across Northern Ireland and formed part of the Festival at Queens, Belfast. Throughout Ireland Billy is well known as a Director of Musical Theatre, and received the M.B.E. for his service to music in Northern Ireland. Choral The Adjudicator of the choral section on Friday will be Diane Creighton who has been actively engaged in Music Education for over 30 years. Head of Music in two post-primary schools, and an Advisory Officer for music in the SEELB, Diane also cowrote the first Northern Ireland music curriculum and was involved with each subsequent revision, producing several resources for teachers supporting its implementation. An Adjudicator on UTV Choir of the Year, and Director of the Ulster Youth Orchestra for 18 years, plus vast experience as an adjudicator at many local music competitions, make Diane an exceptional professional in her field. Traditional Ian Dinsmore will adjudicate the Traditional class on Saturday. Ian is a well-known traditional musician from County Antrim. He became part of the thriving traditional music scene at an early age, forging an excellent reputation for himself and was a founding member of the hugely successful Haste to the Wedding ceilidh band. Ian left the group briefly to study Folk and Traditional music at Newcastle upon Tyne University where he spent several years performing and adjudicating at folk festivals throughout the North-East of England.

A Youth Concert will be held on Friday 2 May at 7 p.m. in The Memorial Hall (Festival venue) Admission: by donation All money raised will go to Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice A selection of our talented young people will be invited to take part in the above event which raises money for a very worthy cause.
