Royal Valley Welcomes Aaric Davis Back to the District and Says a Heartfelt Goodbye to John Rundle On July 1, 2016, the Royal Valley School District will have a new superintendent, something that hasn’t happened very often in the history of the district. John Rundle has served as the superintendent for the past 15 years. Prior to Mr. Rundle there were only four other superintendents. When Mr. Rundle announced his retirement, the Royal Valley Board of Education embarked on an unfamiliar journey to find a replacement. With guidance from the Kansas Association of School Boards, the RV school board went through a lengthy process to find the right person to lead the district. At a special meeting on April 6, the board announced that Aaric Davis would fill that role.

Aaric Davis returns to the district after a three year absence spent serving as elementary principal and junior/senior high school principal in USD 252 Southern Lyon County. Mr. Davis originally started at Royal Valley in 2001 as a high school math teacher and coach. He went on to become the high school assistant principal followed by serving as the middle school principal. The district looks forward to working with Mr. Davis again and eagerly welcomes him back!

John Rundle spent his entire 40 year educational career at Royal Valley. Starting in 1976 as a junior high English teacher, he went on to become the elementary principal then curriculum director and assistant superintendent before serving as the superintendent. Mr. Rundle leaves us as a highly respected education professional not only within the district but throughout the state as well. The RV community congratulates him on his well deserved retirement and wishes him the best!

Inside the District... by John Linn, RVMS Principal

Dealing With Change

We all know that change is inevitable. Change occurs in our lives on a daily basis, and most of the time it makes us uncomfortable. Nothing seems to ever stay the same. We sometimes wish that everything would remain the same, and with that sameness, comes a feeling of calmness. However, we also know that life is all about change, and just like the rising and setting of the sun each day, change is going to occur. Change happens in many forms. In our educational system, there are shifts that occur almost constantly. Curricular standards, redesigned assessments, teacher and administration evaluation reforms, and constantly fluctuating budget issues are some of the challenges we face. Kansas has a new Commissioner of Education who oversees the Kansas Department of Education. The new commissioner, along with his taskforce, created a new slogan for education in Kansas, “Kansans Can.” As is the issue with any change, it always takes time to get used to new systems and new requirements.

Other forms of change related to Royal Valley have been the emphasis on technology and the implementation of Chromebooks and iPads throughout the district. This has caused a shift in how teachers instruct their students while opening up a wide range of additional information that spans the globe. With every change that takes place, the question we all have to answer is “How are we going to deal with it?” To be truly successful in life, we need to learn to handle the changes that come our way in a positive and effective manner. This is what life does; it gives us endless chances to learn from change. As one person stated, “Every change knocks on the door with opportunities, it depends on how wide you open the door.” There are times when problems follow change; however, we need to continually look at those problems as opportunities for growth.

A major change coming to the Royal Valley school district is the impending retirement of our superintendent, Mr. John Rundle. I cannot begin to describe what his leadership has meant to me in my short time at RVMS. In the

40 years that Mr. Rundle has been a part of our school district, I know that he has greatly influenced and impacted several generations of Panthers as well as hundreds of staff members that have always been welcomed as members of his “Panther” family. When positive change occurred throughout the last 40 years, you can bet that Mr. Rundle played a major role in the implementation and development of most all of them. Words will not and cannot describe the impact of his life-long dedication to our district, its students, its community, its people, and his goal of educating all of our students with true dedication and pride. This “change” has been earned and is the next step and a new beginning for Mr. Rundle and his family.

Faced with the inevitable changes in life, what can we do? We can accept the fact that change is a part of our lives. Also, we can learn to adapt and adjust to all that life throws at us. Working together, we can face the challenges of change and be willing to open the door wide enough to allow new opportunities through.

RVHS FCCLA Members Succeed at State Competition!

11

Several Royal Valley High School students recently attended the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference in Wichita. Four of them received medals in the Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) Events competition. STAR Events are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership, and career preparation. Breanna Hainline received a gold at state for her video about healthy relationships in the event Digital Stories for Change. Her entire Family Studies class wrote scenarios and recorded them about the danger signs of abusive relationships and how to help friends that find themselves in this situation. Breanna then took these clips and put them together with music and a voice over to create the video. She will be competing at Nationals this summer in San Diego.

Mary Broxterman and Eryn Daugherty received a gold at state for their project called “Decide Your Destiny” in the event National Programs in Action. Their project had 4 components. The first component was helping at the career fair by registering speakers and making signs and nametags. The next two components were done in their Success 101 class. That involved a field trip to Washburn Institute of Technology and all the class making videos. Then for the 4th component, Mary and Eryn chose the top 10 videos and used them with a learning activity to teach a lesson in human capital to middle school students. They will be competing at Nationals this summer in San Diego. Hanna Allen received a silver at state for her research on marine biologists in the event Career Investigation. She compiled a 50 page portfolio demonstrating her research on the career of her choice. Part of this was a requirement of the Success 101 class. Then she created a 10 minute speech about what she had learned and her desire to be a marine biologist. Congratulations Breanna, Mary, Eryn, and Hanna!

RVMS Student Wins Opportunity to Go to National History Day Competition!

On Saturday April 23, 2016, Lilly Rooks represented Royal Valley Middle School at the State History Day competition at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Lilly competed in the Junior Documentary Division with her project titled: Tragedy and Greatness - The Encounters of Ron Klerk de Reus. There were nine other students competing in her division. Prior to her participation in the April 23rd competition, she had received third place at the District Level. That was the first time ever that Lilly had prepared for and competed in such an event. At the District competition, the judges gave Lilly suggestions on improvements and changes she could make in order to move on to the next level, which was the State History Fair Day.

On Saturday, Lilly was awarded a first place medal giving her the opportunity to represent Royal Valley Middle School at the National History Day Competition! It will be held at the University of Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC, on June 12-16, 2016. Lilly has spent countless hours working on this very personal project. She has even been challenged with learning several software programs including: Final Cut Pro (a film editing program) and Photoshop. Part of the project included her having to learn how to create an annotative bibliography and write a 500 word paper. Lilly expanded her knowledge by spending several hours researching World War II, learning to film, learning to properly interview people, and finally writing a script for her documentary.

Lilly is excited to move on to the next level of competition in June. She is already looking ahead to next year and what topic she wants to tackle!

Fundraisers are being organized, and if you would be interested in helping Lilly with expenses associated with her trip to DC to compete at the National Level, please contact the RVMS office at 785-966-2251. Congratulations Lilly!
