Advent Blessings! How magnificent our God is; as Saint Paul says, “Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; He took the humble position…and was born as a human being.” Jesus, especially in the first Christmas celebrated, showed us what unconditional love looks like and feels like; and through our nativity scenes we use today He reminds us that is how He loves us. He chose to become an infant. I wonder if that’s because an infant undeniably embodies one of the truest, unconditional forms of trust and love we experience as humans. An infant completely gives love to his/her caregiver, and Jesus completely gives His love too. Jesus loves us no matter what. No strings attached. He is present in every moment and in every person and in every family. We learn this from the example of the Holy Family. His family found unity, peace, and mutual love in that little town of Nazareth. May we make our homes more and more like Jesus’ home until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with Him. This Christmas I invite you to pray the following prayer together, as a family, and as a reminder that your family is holy too. Supplies necessary for prayer service: a nativity scene, and the words compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, love, peace and be thankful on separate slips of paper. Have the family gather around your nativity scene: Leader: O God, bless this family. ALL: Give our family holiness. Leader: When we are irritated or get on each other’s nerves, when we quarrel and fight, when we say hurtful things ALL: Give our family holiness. Leader: When we work together, when we play together, when we pray together, when we love one another ALL: Give our family holiness. Leader: As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe us with: COMPASSION (have a child place the slip of paper near Mary) KINDNESS (have a child place the slip of paper near Joseph) HUMILITY (have a child place the slip of paper near Jesus) MEEKNESS (have a child place the slip of paper near the donkey) PATIENCE (have a child place the slip of paper near the cow) Leader: Bear with one another, and if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you. Above all, clothe yourselves with love and let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts to which indeed you were called in one body. LOVE & PEACE (have a child place the slips of papers near Jesus) Leader: And let us all be thankful for family. Family life may seem ordinary but that is exactly what we are celebrating -- the ordinary lives of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in their home. Mary & Joseph taught Jesus how to walk, talk, eat and play. Jesus taught Mary, Joseph, and the rest of the world, what true love looks like and feels like. For that let us: BE THANKFUL (have a child place the slip of paper on the top of the nativity. Leader: Let us pray that the peace of Christ reign in our hearts and homes so that the world will become a place of happiness. Let happiness be in our hearts and homes so that the world will become a place of joy. Let joy be in our hearts and homes so that the world will become a place of love. Let love be in our hearts and homes forever and always so the world will only know love. ALL: Amen!
