NOVEMBER – DECEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It was terrific to see the number of parents and students who attended our recent Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences at the end of October. These conferences are an excellent means to helping teachers and parents better understand and support students as “action plans” are developed between school and home to support student success. Also, through these conversations, students come to better understand what is expected of them and the support that is available to help them to realize success. The first official report card of this school year is scheduled to go home on January 29. Additionally, an option report card will be sent home with students on December 18 to indicate their level of achievement in complementary courses taken during Term 1. Core subject courses (Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science and Physical Education) operate on a semester schedule. They run all year and student achievement in those subjects is reported on in January and June. Complementary courses operate on a trimester schedule (September through December, December through March, and March through June). In addition to formal report cards, students and parents are encouraged to visit D2L to monitor student progress and also be aware of homework, assignments, and test dates. D2L can be accessed on our website at http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b628. Moreover, I would also encourage you to visit Iris which can also be accessed by visiting our website. In Iris, you will find your child’s self authored Student Learning Plan in which they have outlined the conditions that influence their learning and have also set forth specific learning goals for themselves and developed strategies to help realize those goals. You should also find some artifacts of work posted that they have completed in their classes.

November-December, 2015

I am happy to share that in November our school will receive extra resources that will directly contribute to student learning and success. Beginning this month, we will add an additional full-time teacher to our staff. Ms. Samantha Stehr will be joining the Massey community to teach grades 8 and 9 Language Arts. She will be assuming three of Ms. Good’s Grade 9 classes and two of Ms. Holstein’s grade 8 classes so that they can work to more intentionally support students with literacy needs and also provide additional support to our English Language Learner population. In December, we will add a part-time teacher to provide additional support to students experiencing difficulty in Math. Our Student Leadership Group is now up and running, having held their first meeting in October. This group is composed of one student representative from each homeroom. Under the direction of Mr. Rustemeyer, this group meets once a month to discuss school related issues and develop suggestions, ideas and activities to further strengthen our school community. Members of this group are also expected to act as liaisons with their homerooms, ensuring that all students have an opportunity to have their perspective shared. Congratulations to our cross-country team and soccer teams on excellent seasons! Both our boys and girls soccer teams captured divisional pennants. Best of luck to our volleyball players as they go into playoffs! I also take this opportunity to invite you to our Remembrance Day Assemblies on November 10 in the morning, our Fine Arts Showcase on December 2 at 6:30 p.m., and our Band Concert at the Jubilee Auditorium on December 9 at 7:00 p.m. Thank you to all the staff members who have made these extra-curricular opportunities possible for our students! Wishing all families a restful and rejuvenating Winter Break!

November-December, 2015

At September’s Meet the Teacher evening, I spoke of the Vincent Massey School Council’s new tax-deductible direct donation campaign, aimed at benefitting all students at Vincent Massey through support of a variety of programs. At the time, I committed to providing regular updates of our fund-raising progress. I am very pleased to let you know that we have raised $12,000 to date this year, and are well on our way to reaching our goal of $20, 000. With the funds raised, we are already able to commit our support for a number of the school’s prioritized requests, with literacy and numeracy support first on the list. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has been able to donate. Your generosity directly affects our kids in each grade. It will help those who are doing well and those who are struggling; those who love phys-ed; and those who look forward to science; those who can’t wait for new books in the library and those who might face bullying. We are still short of our goal, however, and there remains great programs that we are in danger of not being able to fund. We need your help. If you haven’t had the opportunity to do so yet, I would ask you to consider a donation of $100 per child to the Vincent Massey School Council. Cheques can be sent to the school with your child, and funds can able be donated through debit or credit in the school office. For a tax receipt (issued for donations over $25), please make out your cheque to the Calgary Board of Education, fill in your address on the attached form, and return both to the school office. All funds donated stay with the Vincent Massey School, and all funds raised will be spent on programs presented as a priority by your school administration, approved by School Council, and delivered this school year. If you have any questions or comments about this fundraising campaign, please contact me at [email protected] – or come to our next meeting, which will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, in the Learning Commons (aka the library). Our progress to date has been very encouraging. Let’s see if we can get across the finish line. Thanks to all, Susan Anderson-Olney Chair, Vincent Massey School Council

Fellow Parents, we need your help! TAX DEDUCTIBLE DIRECT DONATION CAMPAIGN TO BENEFIT ALL VINCENT MASSEY STUDENTS Good things are happening at Vincent Massey, and the annual Direct Donation Campaign is a great way for VM families to support this vibrant and exciting school community. Vincent Massey School Council has been able to support the provision of a high level of activities and educational tools to students in the past based on money raised through fundraising. The amount of those funds, however, has been slowly decreasing over the past several years, to the point where we are in danger of not being able to continue with this support. Among other things, we would like to support the following initiatives this year that have been identified by our principal, students, teachers, and parents: • • • • • • • •

Welcome to incoming Grade 7s Social Studies guest speakers, Grades 7 and 8 Dare to Care, an anti-bullying program PARTY, a risk-reduction program for Grade 9s Books for our library Literacy program for struggling readers in all grades Binocular microscopes for the Science Department Phys-ed equipment

Our fundraising goal is $20,000. If we achieve this goal we will be in a position to provide students with these enhanced learning opportunities at VM. We need your help. We are requesting a donation amount of $100 per child, or $150 per family. We recognize that some families will be comfortable giving more or less than that. Any donation is gratefully appreciated and all donation information is held in strict confidence. This is the School Council’s only fundraising campaign, and the funds raised benefit all students at the school! Please refer to the back of this sheet for details on making your tax-deductible donation. THANK YOU! As the library expands my desire of reading expands with it. Leaving my elementary school I was considered a poor reader. My reading now in grade nine is out of control. I am very thankful for contributions going toward our expanded learning commons. – Nigel M. I came from an elementary school that didn’t have a very wide variety of books available for me to read… [At Vincent Massey] there was never a time I wasn’t being recommended a new book to read…I have gone from a student that hated to read to a student that loves reading. Thank you for your donation and investing in our future. – Derya D.

I have gone through over twenty books this year. Our library has been able to provide me with books that I was able to read for fun, for a good laugh, or books that caused me to think, to read between the lines. Part of the reason Vincent Massey has such a large variety of books is because of your time and effort. Thank you for the large contribution you have made to our Library. – Andjela P.

PARTY PROGRAM We have been assigned two dates to attend the PARTY program offered through the Foothills Hospital (December 15 and 16). The students will be participating in a hard hitting, informative program on the consequences of teenage drinking and driving, of not wearing seatbelts, and of risk taking behavior. It is a full- day field trip involving a presentation by people who know the front line: hospital, emergency, intensive care and rehabilitation staff, and the teenage victims who have lived to tell their stories. We feel that it is an excellent experience, one that students will remember. Permission forms will be sent home on November 30th, and students are encouraged to submit their permission slips by December 7th. Grade 9 students, who submit their forms on time will be entered in a draw. Unfortunately we only have been offered 55 spots each th day. The students will be notified by December 7 , if they have been chosen. We are also in need of parent volunteers for these dates. If you are interested in assisting, please contact Mrs. Lauzier at the school. 777-7870 ext. 2017 or [email protected]. ***PLEASE NOTE: Students will be required to be at the school by 7:50 a.m. on the mornings of the indicated dates. The bus will depart at 8:00 am, and the program begins at 8:20 a.m. sharp. Please assist with your child’s transportation to school for this early and prompt departure.

STUDENT SERVICES Individual Program Plans (IPP’s) have been sent home for students and parents to review. Please make sure they are signed and sent back to the key teacher as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact the IPP key teacher. Some IPPs may look different from previous years, as they are being prepared in a new program. Grade 9 students are starting to ask about High Schools for next year; Ernest Manning is the designated high school for most Vincent Massey students. If students are interested in the Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) Program or the National Sports Academy (NSA) they can apply to Central Memorial. Students can also apply to Western Canada’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, as this is our designated IB school. th

Ernest Manning will be having grade 9 tours on November 18 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 th a.m. The evening open house for parents will be on November 26 at 7:00 p.m. An information letter will be sent home with students in early November. th

Western Canada will be offering grade 9 tours on November 17 from 12:15 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Students who wish to attend the tours must arrange their own transportation to and from Western Canada School. An evening open house, as well as an IB information th session, will be held on November 18 , with tours beginning at 5:45 p.m. and the information session beginning at 7:00 p.m. Any students wanting an IB application can get one from Ms. Bartlett.

Central Memorial will be having grade 9 tours on November 17 from 9:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Students who wish to attend the tours must arrange their own transportation to and from Central Memorial School. The evening open house for parents and students will be on th November 19 at 7:00 p.m. Students who are interested in PVA can see Ms. Bartlett for an th application form; the PVA Information Night will be on November 12 at 7:00 p.m. Transfers - Students wanting to attend a high school, other than their designated school, must fill out a transfer form in January/February. The transfer forms are only available at the high schools and only one transfer form can be filled out per student. Once completed, th the signed transfer form must be taken to the requested high school before March 11 , th 2016. After the 11 of March, principals will be in a position to determine how many spaces they have available for out of area students. Students requesting a transfer will receive a letter or a phone call indicating if there is space for them, and if so, will be asked to complete a course selection for that particular school.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORT TEAMS Congratulations go out to all of Massey's sports teams for a fantastic start to the school year. The Volleyball teams have also been successful this year and are currently heading th into the playoffs starting November 9 . We would like to wish all the Massey Volleyball teams good luck in their playoff games. Congratulations go out to the Boys and Girls soccer teams this year for a successful season. Congrats to the girls soccer team who won their division and thank you to Mrs. Pelehos and Mr. Filippetto for their time and effort with the Girls’ team. Congratulations to the Boys soccer team who won their division championship this season and thank you to Mr. Geraldi and Mr. Rieger for their time and effort with the Boys’ soccer team. Thank you to Mr. Rustemeyer, Ms. Holstein and Mrs. Krause for a great cross country season. The athletes represented Massey well at the meets and captured many top 10 finishes and managed to win the Senior girls Championship and the Girls Aggregate Championship. The Massey Mane Extravaganza Volleyball Tournament was a great success, as both our Sr. Girls and Sr. Boys played some very good teams and gained some valuable game experience. Both teams were able to capture second place in the tournament. I would like to thank all the students and staff volunteers for their hard work and for the extra hours they spent helping to make the tournament a great success.

NEW THIS MONTH: Students are currently heading into their third unit; the unit is European Handball and Soccer. With the weather changing, please ensure your child is prepared to go outside for the Outdoor Games unit. This would include sweatpants, jacket, gloves, hat, boots and an extra pair of socks to change into once they come inside for the remainder of their day. A reminder to students and parents about the clothing and jewellery in class. Students are expected to be changed for Physical Education classes which includes a Massey Gym strip shirt and shorts. Students are not allowed to wear clothes that they have worn to school that day for gym class because we do not want their nice school clothes to be ripped or ruined, and also for hygienic reasons. We ask students to wear gym strip next to their bodies so that their perspiration can be on their gym strip and not on their clothes they will be sitting in all day long in class. If students are going to be in an outside unit and it is cooler out we will allow them to wear sweatpants, hoodies, gloves, and hats to stay warm. Jewellery is also not to be worn as it is a safety concern to not only the student who is wearing the jewellery but to the other students as well. It is our main concern to ensure that all students have a safe environment to be active. Jewellery and gum are our two biggest concerns that prevent us from maintaining a safe environment for all students. Your cooperation in this matter is much appreciated. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the physical education office. There are also no cellphones allowed in the locker room at any time. This policy will help to deter any potential issues regarding cameras in a locker room. If a student is caught with a cell phone in the locker room; the phone will be taken away and will be given to the principal or assistant principal. The only way to get the cell phone back will be to have a parent or guardian come to the school and meet with the principal and or assistant principal. The phone will be returned to the student once it is understood why the policy is in place.

MUSIC September and October have just flown by and we are now looking at November and December activities! th

There were two field trips in October; October 6 the Grade 9’s spent the morning with Mr. Rob Cesselli at Ernest Manning. This was an excellent opportunity for Grade 9 students to th, experience and interact with the Ernest Manning Music director. On October 16 the Grade 7’s journeyed to Central Memorial to watch a performance of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. This was an excellent concert that featured classical music, music from famous movies, and popular music. Page 10 | 17

NOVEMBER IS RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS MONTH

Here are some suggestions 1. 2. 3. 4.

Hold the door open for those behind you. Say good morning to your teacher, principal, school officials and classmates. Offer to let your classmate go first. Volunteer to be a tutor or mentor in a school, especially if there is an area in which you can help another student. 5. Give someone a compliment at least once every day. 6. Clean up the area around your school or a local park, picking up trash and putting it in the garbage can. You can also help your teacher clean up the classroom. 7. Be extra kind to your bus driver. Say hello when you get on the bus and say thank you when you get off the bus. 8. Call your grandparent(s) or other special family members who you do not see often. 9. Help around the house without being asked to do so, such as cleaning your room, taking out the garbage or helping with the laundry. 10.Smile. Smiling is easy and happiness is contagious!

Instructions Step 1 Preheat oven to 350° F (180° C). In a medium bowl, mix pumpkin and lentil puree, canola oil, eggs, sugar, and orange zest. Step 2 In another bowl, combine flours, baking powder and soda, cloves, ginger, and salt. Add dry mixture to pumpkin mixture and stir together. Step 3 Spray 9 inch (22 cm) loaf pan with canola oil cooking spray. Pour batter into loaf pan. Bake loaf for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes and remove from loaf pan to let cool completely on wire rack. Cut into 12 slices. Tips

*Lentil Puree: Place cooked lentils into the bowl of a food processor. For every cup (250 mL) of cooked lentils, add 1/4 cup (60 mL) water. Blend until smooth.
