Check out our ‘ready reckoner’ in the first column of our liner listings (opposite) which shows the resulting pond size of each of our liners using this formula. Choice of pond shape and depth is up to you. We recommend that a part of the pond should be at leat 1m deep (3’ 3”) to provide an area where fish can keep warmer overwinter. Larger and deeper ponds are easier to maintain. Most of our customers surveyed wished they had gone bigger!

Pond Liners All successful pond projects start with a good waterproof pond liner. A pond liner provides a watertight membrane to stop pond water seeping away. Firestone Rubber 1.02mm In an effort to present you with as much choice as possible we have introduced another rubber liner to our range. Underlay

We recommend that all pond liners are underlaid as extra protection for your liner. It helps to prevent root penetration and punctures from small stones/debris. Underlay supplied matches the sqm of our liners. “Basic“ is a budget underlay, providing a good level of protection. Particularly suitable for small ponds or where sand is used as a primary barrier. £1.10 per sqm. “Pond Fleece” premium underlay is a heavy 200gsm needled BESTSEL felt. Recommended for all LER ponds - particularly larger liners or stoney ground. £1.70 per sqm
PVC Pond Liner We have extended our range of 0.5mm PVC liners this year. Thicker than LDPE but not tearproof. These are priced: 15yr guarantee £2.49 sqm 30yr guarantee £2.99 sqm.
Half Price Underlay with 30yr PVC Butyl rubber First choice for professionals for many years. Lifetime guarantee (20yrs on 140sqm plus), 0.75mm thick. £7.49 per sqm.
EPDM rubber Same physical characteristics as Butyl but with significant cost savings. Lifetime guarantee (20yrs on 140sqm plus), 0.75mm thick. We find that this synthetic rubber now outsells butyl. £5.49 per sqm.

Concrete Pond Accessories Concrete ponds are finished with a layer of render to create a smooth surface. You then need to seal this later to stop the water getting in and the lime seeping out. You need 3 coats of clear G4 when you apply it to a pond. This is a total of 550g per square metre. Example lets say the pond is 3m x 2m and 1m deep. 1. Work out the area of the bottom (in example 3x2m = 6sqm) 2. Find the area of one of the sides. Then multiply by 2 to cover both sides. (in example sides 1 = 2x1 = 2sqm x 2 = 4sqm) 3. Filter Pumps Solids handling pumps are often described in different terms such as ‘Filter Pumps’ or ‘dirty water pumps’. What they are designed to do is to pump dirty water 24/7 to a filter and/or waterfall. Solid particles are able to pass through the large gaps in the pump outer strainer cage and the tough pump impellor can push these particles out.
How to select the right size pump for your pond Flow rate This is the power of flow or how much water the pump will move. - catalogue shows this as ‘Max Flow LPH’ Abbreviation stands for Litres Per Hour (LPH) and the larger your pond the higher flow you will need.
Flow requirements A typical goldfish pondkeeper should aim to turn the water over once every two hours. A heavily stocked/koi pond should be turned over every hour. Example: Pond Size 4x3m and 1m deep (13’x10’x3’). Maximum pond volume if rectangular with no steps = 4x3x1000 = 12000 Litres (2643 gallons).
Guideline pump would be 6000lph (1321 gallons per hour). For a koi pond a 12000lph pump could be chosen.
Pumping Uphill Pumps lose pressure when they pump uphill as they have to work against gravity. Typically a pump may be required to power a waterfall of 1m (3’ 4”) and these reduced flow rates have been listed for easy reference. Using the example of the 12000 Litre goldfish pond above, if a 1m height was required then a suitable upgrade would be the Aquamax Eco 8000 which produces 6000lph at 1m. Filtration is the process by which your pond is cleaned of impurities. With modern filters there are three major stages:
Ultra-Violet Clarifier (UVC) The UVC subjects the pond water to UV radiation. This means that microscopic single-cell algae flocculate (stick together). The resultant large particle pieces are picked up by filter foams and prevented from re-entering the pond. This prevents your pond looking green (like pea soup).
Mechanical Filtration Pond debris such as fish waste and dead pond plant particles are caught in mechanical barriers - typically foam. These foams are often graduated to catch even the smallest pieces.

Biological Filtration Finally pond water will often pass through a bed of bio-media. This material will typically have a multisurface appearance (eg, flocor or Kaldnes) on which friendly bacteria thrive. These bacteria will break down Ammonia, which is caused by dead and decaying organic matter, into Nitrite. A different type of bacteria
Which one is for me? Filters are sold by the size of the pond they are designed to serve. We have indicated a ‘Pond size’ next to each filter which shows how the maximum pond volume the model will serve under ‘normal' conditions (eg, average goldfish stock, semi-shade position, plenty of plants).
Main types of pond filters available:
A) Flow-through Filters
B) Pressure Filters
C) Koi Filters
The traditional ‘Box’ filter sits pondside or at the top of a waterfall. Pond water is pushed into one end and returns via gravity from the other. These filters are generally larger and provide a massive area of filtration media to cope with larger ponds.
A more modern approach is to house the filter media into an airtight cannister. The water enters the filter under pressure and leaves it under pressure allowing the filter to be hidden. Great for smaller ponds - these filters provide maximum landscaping opportunities.
Koi are large fish which produce a lot of waste and eat pond plants. Therefore a koi pond require larger, more sophisticated filtration.

Pond Hose & Clips As your pond water makes its journey from your pump to its destination - via a UVC, filter or waterfall - it needs to be constrained by a network of hose. This hose should be fixed securely to the equipment using clips - this helps prevent any chance of the hose becoming loose or leaks affecting performance. As with most things items fail due to the weakest link, that is why we only use premium hose and accessories.
