MAY 2010

THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS May 30, 2010 Honoring the friends of God with much reverence, the Prophet and King David says, "But to me, exceedingly honorable are Thy friends, O Lord" (Psalm 138:16). And the divine Apostle, recounting the achievements of the Saints, and setting forth their memorial as an example that we might turn away from earthly things and from sin, and emulate their patience and courage in the struggles for virtue, says, "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every burden, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1). This commemoration began as the Sunday (Synaxis) of All Martyrs; to them were added all the ranks of Saints who

bore witness (the meaning of "Martyr" in Greek) to Christ in manifold ways, even if occasion did not require the shedding of their blood. Therefore, guided by the teaching of the Divine Scriptures and Apostolic Tradition, we the pious honor all the Saints, the friends of God, for they are keepers of God's commandments, shining examples of virtue, and benefactors of mankind. Of course, we honor the known Saints especially on their own day of the year, as is evident in the Menologion. But since many Saints are unknown, and their number has increased with time, and will continue to increase until the end of time, the Church has appointed that once a year a common commemoration be made of all the Saints. This is the feast that we celebrate today. It is the harvest of the coming of the Holy Spirit into the world; it

Panegyri Update The Panegyri is less than 8 weeks away! At this time we are looking for one chairperson. We need someone to run the sales side of the Pastry booth. This is a demanding assignment because of the number of volunteers needed. We will supply the chairperson with the volunteer list from last year and plenty of help. The booth will be laid out the same as last year. This booth accounted for 12% of our weekend sales last year, so it is very important. Please contact the office if you are interested in helping. Our sponsorship drive has been going well; we have received over $6,000 so far. This is 15% of our goal of $40,000. Please consider sponsoring an item if you have not already done so. Here are the important dates in May: our next meeting is Monday May 17th at 6:30pm and we are having a “Meet the Chairpeople” coffee hour after church on May 30th. We hope to see everyone there.

is the "much fruit" brought forth by that "Grain of wheat that fell into the earth and died" (John 12:24); it is the glorification of the Saints as "the foundation of the Church, the perfection of the Gospel, they who fulfilled in deed the sayings of the Saviour" (Sunday of All Saints, Doxasticon of Vespers). In this celebration, then, we reverently honor and call blessed all the Righteous, the Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors, Shepherds, Teachers, and holy Monastics, both men and women alike, known and unknown, who have been added to the choirs of the Saints and shall be added, from the time of Adam until the end of the world, who have been perfected in piety and have glorified God by their holy lives. All these, as well as the orders of the Angels, and especially our most holy Lady and Queen, the Ever-virgin Theotokos Mary, do we honor today, setting their life before us as an example of virtue, and entreating them to intercede in our behalf with God, Whose grace and boundless mercy be with us all. Amen. Χριστός Ανέστη! Our church community is still basking in the bright light of Easter and reflects the glorious Pascal period our faithful experienced. We thank our clergy, Father Bill, Father Ciprian and laity, for the service and participation that completed our spiritual journey culminating in celebration of the Gus Perdikakis Resurrection of our Parish Council Lord Jesus Christ. President Alithos Anesti! We received some excellent media coverage of our Easter services and want to commend Peter Kambelos, Communications Committee Chair, for his leadership in successfully broadcasting press releases to the media. This month, it is my pleasure to announce that your Parish Council has filled the parish administrator position with our very own Eugene Nicholas. This community has been so fortunate to have Eugene

as a church leader in Parish Council, as Church Treasurer and Panegyri Chair and now brings that valued experience and knowledge to the church staff effective June 7, 2010. Eugene holds a B.S. in Business from the University of Colorado and has over 25 years of management, education, information technology and operations experience most recently as Director of Testing and Technology at P.A.C.E High School in Cincinnati. His wife Cindy is a GOYA advisor and sons Gus, Tyler and Zachary are very active in church life and witness to the Greek Orthodox faith. In addition, Eugene’s parents Nick and Helen are active church members. Also, Helen is well known in Philoptochos and Daughters and has been a volunteer in the Church Office. Please join me in congratulating Eugene and his family for his new position and the successful execution of his duties and responsibilities as the new Parish Administrator.

Hiring Eugene creates a Parish Council vacancy and we are asking parishioners in good standing to consider serving to fulfill the remaining 7 months of this term. Interested individuals can submit their name and brief background by May 9, 2010 to Marcus Chichura, Chair of the Governance Committee by either calling the church office or e-mailing [email protected] or [email protected] I know we are all preparing for Panegyri 2010 and should be proud to know that our festival was voted number 48 on a list of 50 must do things, local experiences in the ‘Nati” by the Cincinnati Chamber. Also the number 1 church festival voted by reader picks in City Beat. Every year our guests to the Panegyri raise their expectations and anticipate the great Greek experience. The reason they leave pleased and satisfied is because of the outstanding leadership, hard work, dedication and giving of time, talent and treasure of this outstanding church community. Opa!

A Message From Our New Parish Administrator … Eugene Nicholas Christos Anesti! Christ Is Risen! I would like to thank Fr. Bill, Fr. Ciprian and the Parish Council for giving me this opportunity to serve the Church in a much larger capacity. I would also like to thank Angie Sampson and Pana Gregg for setting such a high standard of excellence for our office. My hope is that I will be able to live up to the standard that they have set. I do not officially start until June 7th, but I have a task that must be completed in May to ensure a smooth transition. I am looking for a volunteer clerical team for the office. The office will need 4 to 5 volunteers that can alternate each day in the office. Only one volunteer will be needed each

day. The hours would be from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The duties will include answering phones, filing, assembling mailings and other general clerical tasks. A working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access would be ideal, but not necessary. Please contact Pana in the office at 591-0030 if you are interested in helping. I am going to have several training sessions throughout the month of May. If you have time to volunteer, please consider this important role in our office. I look forward to getting to know everyone better and expanding my role in the life of our Church.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU WHO PARTICIPATED IN THIS YEAR’S BLOOD DRIVE This was the most successful blood drive of the past 5 years. This is I think mostly due to the efforts of the ladies who were willing to call you and ask you to come in on the Saturday of Lazarus. The organizations that participated were: Philoptochos, Mother’s Club, and Daughters of Penelope. There were also regular donors who made calls for us. A special thank you to Melody and Dave Dargis who coordinated the call lists. As for numbers we had 47 people who tried to donate on March 27 and Hoxworth Blood Center was able to collect 44 units of blood. For those who wanted to but could not donate on that day I would like to thank you for your caring towards others in our tri-state community. I will gladly accept your prayers and telephone help for next year’s blood drive.

Please remember to give throughout the year in the name of our Church Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas. The recognition we recently received from Hoxworth is a testament to you. May this be one of many efforts to unite us in response to God’s grace and mercy to us.

Seasons of Grace Reflections on the Orthodox Church Year by Donna Farley There is an enormous tension between the desire to enter fully into the life of the Church and the many pressures of society and everyday life. We sometimes find ourselves walking a tight rope between what we think is the ideal of a holy life and the demands of our post-modern world. The beauty of the Church seasons is that they teach us how to balance our life. The Christ life is a whole life, and expansive life, a life in Christ—the one who gives Himself for the life of the world. Seasons of Grace is author Donna Farley’s own view from the tightrope. These short yet thoughtful reflections, written in an insightful and sometimes humorous style, will help weave together the great feasts into the fabric of our life. This book is available in our Parish Bookstore and from Conciliar Press.

Christos Anesti! Once again, many thanks to everyone who helped with various Philoptochos events throughout the Lenten season this year. It is a pleasure to work together and join with our entire community as we celebrate the blessings of Holy Pascha each and every year.

Our next luncheon, May 15, will be at the Bucca di Beppo Italian restaurant at Rookwood Commons. We will have a set menu of two items, as it is family style and there will be plenty of food. If you have not paid your dues, please send a check to Koula Alex, payable to The Over Fifty Club. MOTHERS' CLUB ... GOYA has once again hosted a very successful Taverna Family Night on April 24. This was only the third edition of this great event, but with every new year, it becomes more and more a part of our Community tradition. This year, we have extended the invitation to our surrounding Orthodox communities of Indianapolis, Dayton, Springfield, Middletown, Louisville and Lexington. Thank you to those who participated for making this year's Taverna Family Night a great success. On May 15, our Parish will host the Metropolis Oratorical Festival, in which the young Orthodox Christian will compete for a place in the Archdiocesan Festival. Good luck to all

May 2010 MAIDS OF ATHENA The Maids of Athena would like to thank Holy Trinity St. Nicholas and the community for their support in their first Greek Pizza fundraiser. The fundraiser sold Greek pizzas similar to those sold at Panegyri and included Roma tomatoes, Feta cheese, and Sweet onions. The fundraiser could not have been successful without all of your help.

March was another busy month for the Daughters. On March 14, we had our first cooking class. It was a make and take class in which participants learned how to make baklava, tyropites, and spanakopites. The participants were so enthused, that they asked for more classes. At the

PAGE | 6 end of the class, the students helped us make tyropites and spanakopites for the AHEPA dinner/dance. They even helped us with clean up. The Daughters prepared and served the rest of the appetizers at the dinner. Thank you to all of you for your support of our tsourekia sale. In addition to our charities, we have begun funding a $1,000 Buckeye Scholarship and need to raise a total of $15,000 in order for it to be fully funded. This is separate from the general Buckeye Scholarship fund to which we contribute. As noted last month, we will be sponsoring an Artoklasia and memorial service on Fathers’ Day to honor or remember all the men in our lives. Forms are included in this mailing. Please complete the forms for the men you wish to honor or remember and mail them to the Daughters at the church or give them to either Helen Nicholas or Vera Manolakas. THE VOICE The Life of and Stories about our holy Father NICHOLAS PLANAS The Simple Shepherd of Simple Souls By the Nun Martha

The Communion of the Leper: Yet still another incident shows the unsurpassed faith and piety which he had in carrying out his sacred duties. There in his parish, in a narrow little alley, hid a man who was in an advanced state leprosy. His lips had been eaten away by the terrible disease. Once Father went to give him Communion, but his decayed mouth could not receive the Holy Body of the Lord, and it fell a little to one side of his mouth. Without any hesitation whatever—absolutely none—Father leaned over and with his mouth took the Divine Pearl which had fallen, and consumed it! Let those who find it hard to receive Communion because they’re afraid of germs take a look at this…Actually, it is a great blasphemy: that the one God of the living and the dead, the Creator of heaven and earth, could be contaminated by germs! The ravings of mentally-darkened unbelievers! As for that sick man, he was found out by the police and sent to the leper-colony together with his daughter, who had also

become afflicted and had her fingers eaten away. In spite of this Father suffered nothing. Most fervent zeal and holy patience: In the last decade of his Liturgies he was, more than ever, a worn out little old man. One day, there in the Church of Saint John, Father served the Liturgy. He had hardly finished, utterly exhausted, at 3:00 p.m., when his assistant priest came in (who was very much younger, and well-rested besides) and said to him, “Elder, they asked at such-and-such a house that we go and give Communion to someone who’s about to die. So why don’t you go and give him Communion.” And having given orders, he left. We froze when we heard it, that he should hand over such a tiring walk to Father. He didn’t say anything; his holy patience se all things aside. He took the Holy Communion, with the Chalice, and began walking with his well-known slow walk. The sisters from his synodia undertook to accompany him by the arms and carry the lantern. They had to go to the Neos Kosmos neighborhood. In those days there were no houses there, but only open fields. When they returned after having given Communion to the sick man, the sight of Father with his companions would have wrung your heart. You saw a little old man dragging himself along with the holy Chalice in his hands. When they drew near to the church, on the road all the carts and carriages that were passing at that hour stopped, and the drivers got down, bowed their heads, caps in hand, and making their cross, once again lauded the virtue of PapaNicholas. It was a scene which showed the deep piety of the people. Without any doubt on that day the angels themselves rejoiced over the victory of patience.

PACHOMIUS THE GREAT MARTYR Saint Pachomius was born of pagan parents in the Upper Thebaid of Egypt. He was conscripted into the Roman army at an early age. While quartered with the other soldiers in the prison in Thebes, Pachomius was astonished at the kindness shown them by the local Christians, who relieved their distress by bringing them food and drink. Upon inquiring who they were, he believed in Christ and vowed that once delivered from the army, he would serve Him all the days of his life. Released from military service, about the year 313, he was baptized, and became a disciple of the hermit Palamon, under whose exacting guidance he increased in virtue and grace, and reached such a height of holiness that "because of the purity of his heart," says his biographer, "he was, as it were, seeing the invisible God as in a mirror." His renown spread far, and so many came to him to be his disciples that he founded nine monasteries in all, filled with many thousands of monks, to whom he gave a rule of life, which became the pattern for all communal monasticism after him. While Saint Anthony the Great is the father of hermits, Saint Pachomius is the founder of the cenobitic life in Egypt; because Pachomius had founded a way of monasticism accessible to so many, Anthony said that he "walks the way of the Apostles." Saint Pachomius fell asleep in the Lord before his contemporaries Anthony and Athanasius the Great, in the year 346. His name in Coptic, Pachom, means "eagle."
