President’s letter 2012 marks the 96th year of the hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce serving our business community. It has once again been a year filled with great accomplishments and successes as we have built this legacy for nine decades.

I am often asked what does the hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce do. Sometimes I think they really want to know what does the President of the Chamber really do. I think both are very valid and relevant questions. Often I say publically that it is an honor and privilege to serve as the President of the hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce. those of you that know

me realize that this is something that I really do believe. the Chamber is the one county wide entity that brings together Christopher J. Phelan so many of the unique facets of hunterdon’s business community.

there are so many initiatives, projects, services, resources, opportunities, partnerships and events that the Chamber spearheads that impact our Business Community.this runs the gamut from our monthly programs, signature events, to the Women’s Leadership Summit, Young Professionals, tourism and Business & Government Committee to name a few examples. Another example of a great accomplishment this year was the success of the 2012 Business & home Expo. the Committee under the leadership of Debbie meola did an incredible job once again and was probably one of the best shows in the history of this event. the Expo is a great example of so many individuals and organizations coming together under one roof to showcase their respective services. But the Expo theme, Buy Local, Buy hunterdon, is truly what comes to life during the show. Seeing individuals traveling

As expected, the 2012 Business and home Expo & Restaurant Showcase outdid itself again. the one day event packed in over 2,000 attendees, more than 160 unique exhibitors, and 25 locally owned restaurants. the weather couldn’t have been better, the buzz in the Power time Sports arena couldn’t have been louder, and the food couldn’t have been more delectable. Dr. D Entertainment emceed the annual Expo from start to finish, raffling off door prizes, thanking sponsors, and keeping the momentum of the event going. the day started bright and early when exhibitors showed up at the event venue to begin their booth set-ups. While many exhibitors filled their 8’ x 10’ space with brochures, information, and samples of their products…numerous displays were literally being built, exhibitors decked out their confined area with pieces of furniture, balloons, and even barber chairs with a pop-up salon! By the first half hour of the show, the attendance had already reached 200 visitors. the Restaurant Showcase began midafternoon and attendance was at its peak. to recognize that 2012 is a voting year the Expo Committee created a People’s Choice Award. twenty-five restaurants were put to the test and attendees voted on their favorite based on appearance, service, and

of course…the food. the restaurant that received the most votes was awarded with the People’s Choice Award created by Crown trophy of Flemington. the Restaurant Showcase had a wide range of food from sliders to veggie rolls, cheesecakes to pastas, and soups to crepes. the event itself was beyond delicious. the votes were close but matt mcPherson of matt’s Red Rooster came out on top and was presented with the skillet engraved plaque at the end of the evening. the hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce and the Expo Committee would like to give a hUGE ‘thank you’ to all of our 2012 Business and home Expo & Restaurant Showcase Exhibitors, Restaurants, Volunteers, and Sponsors. taxtidbits What does the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act “Obamacare” mean for your company? the new healthcare law has received a lot of news coverage over the past two years, but you might be surprised to realize that it applies to ALL employers. While the law does not mandate an employer to offer health insurance to its employees, beginning in 2014 the law will assess penalties on certain employers with at least 50 full-time equivalent employees if they either do not offer health coverage or their health coverage is determined to be too expensive. the penalties are not cheap – they range from $2,000 to $3,000 per employee. Even though the penalty does not kick in until 2014, it is necessary to begin tracking the hours of employees during 2013 in order to facilitate compliance with the law. General “Pay or Play” Rules Determine your responsibility: Pay or Play rules apply to employers with at least 50 full-time or full-time equivalent employees (as determined from the prior year). Part-time, seasonal and temporary workers are taken into consideration when determining full-time equivalents. the penalty depends on whether the employer offers “minimum essential coverage” to all full-time employees and their dependents (some exceptions included). Penalty for no coverage: Generally, if no coverage is offered, the employer must pay an annual penalty of $2,000 per employee; the first 30 employees are exempt. For example, an organization has 100 employees

Possible Penalties to Employers under “Pay or Play”

and offers no coverage, the penalty would be $140,000/year (100 employees - 30 threshold x $2,000).

owes the lesser of $60,000 (20 employees x $3,000) or $140,000 (100 employees – 30 threshold x $2,000), or $60,000.

Penalty for unaffordable coverage: If coverage is offered, but it is determined to be too expensive to employees (determined because at least one full-time employee purchases federally-subsidized coverage through a State “Exchange”) then the employer must pay an annual penalty of $3,000 per employee; again, the first 30 employees are exempt. the penalty is capped at what it would have been if no coverage had been offered. to illustrate, an organization has 100 employees and offers coverage, however 20 employees purchase insurance on the Exchange. the employer

Summary there are many other aspects to the new healthcare law. the Pay or Play decision will involve human resources, benefits consulting and tax, accounting and legal issues.
