Many St. Louis MSA schools provide additional programs for gifted students, special programs for challenged students, and magnet or charter schools for children seeking a nontraditional learning environment. There are over 300 private schools in the St. Louis, MO-IL MSA. Many long-established and strong independent schools exist, as well as an active parochial school network. With over 30 four-year colleges and universities enrolling more than 125,000, the St. Louis area produces more than 25,000 graduates with bachelor’s, post-bachelor’s, or professional degrees each year. The area also has an extensive network of community colleges, which enroll an additional 65,000-plus students, as well as vocational and technical training facilities and some of the most highly rated elementary schools and high schools in the country. As a result, Greater St. Louis is a great learning environment in which to grow up, as well as a sought-after destination for thousands of people from around the country — and the globe — who are attracted to its top-tier education resources every year. Many of the best and brightest who study in St. Louis enjoy the community so much they decide to plant their roots here after earning their degrees. In fact, the Nobel Prize has been awarded to St. Louisans in nearly every Nobel category — physiology, medicine, chemistry, physics, and literature. Among those benefiting from this situation, of course, is the St. Louis business community. A smart, hard-working workforce fuels the growth of companies throughout the region.

Recreation and Culture Greater St. Louis is a region with arts and cultural events and attractions that regularly impress even its most cultured residents. Innumerable venues for theatrical, musical, dance, and other artistic performances abound. An impressive lineup of national and local music from all genres is performed throughout the region on a nightly basis. Many of the world’s most talented artists — including those who call St. Louis home — perform here regularly. Grand Center, St. Louis’s arts and entertainment district includes the acoustically superb Sheldon Concert Hall, the St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre, Powell Hall, home of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and the Fabulous Fox Theater — which for more than 75 years has attracted the world’s most popular Broadway musicals and musical performers. The St. Louis City Museum was recently named one of the “World’s 10 Best Public Spaces” by New York-based Project for Public Spaces. This curiosity stretches the definition of museum and includes a giant aquarium, architectural museum, a participatory circus, museums of oddities, and more. Greater St. Louis is known as a major college town and regional literary center. In fact, the St. Louis region ranked No. 3 in the country for library services on the 2015 “America’s Most Literate Cities” study published by Central Connecticut State University. In addition, St. Louis was named the 10th most literate city overall for 2015, based on six key indicators of literacy, which included newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment, and Internet resources. Far from being one dimensional, St. Louis was named “Chess City of the Year” in 2009 and 2011 by the U.S. Chess Federation, and has been called the Chess Capital of the United State.

Greater St. Louis has hundreds of parks ranging from urban neighborhood parks to large suburban recreation areas. The area is home to the nationally acclaimed Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country at 1,300 acres. Forest Park features many of the city’s premier attractions, including the Saint Louis Zoo, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, the Municipal Opera, and much more. St. Louis is also known for the Missouri Botanical Garden, an international center for botanical research, with extensive public gardens and research facilities, founded in 1859. Greater St. Louis is building one of the largest urban networks of hiking and bicycle trails in the United States. The 600-mile “River Ring” is currently being developed by the Great Rivers Greenway District. More than 175 miles of trails and bicycle routes have been completed, including over 80 miles of on-street bicycle routes in conjunction with Bike St. Louis. Just across the river from downtown St. Louis, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Midwest. The site preserves the remains of the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico, the Mississippians, within a 2,200-acre tract. As all this attests, when it comes to recreation and culture, St. Louis area residents’ options are plentiful, diverse, and world-renowned. Whether your interests lie in music, food, and nightlife, sports and the outdoors, or arts, architecture, and history, you are bound to find your niche in St. Louis.

Sports for the Spectator Fans can enjoy watching the 11-time World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals play ball in Busch Stadium. The stadium offers the very best of baseball tradition with a great view from every seat, authentic ballpark dining, and a wide variety of off-field activities for pre- and post-game entertainment. New for the 2014 season was the Ballpark Village entertainment district. Featuring dining, nightlife, entertainment, and the Cardinals Hall of Fame & Museum, the new district is located adjacent to Busch Stadium. Watch the talented NHL St. Louis Blues take to the ice at the Scottrade Center. The team is named after the famous W. C. Handy song “Saint Louis Blues” and was founded in 1967 as an expansion team during the league’s original expansion from six to 12 teams. In addition to sports in the pro ranks, minor league and college teams are also a big hit in St. Louis. The Saint Louis University Billikens compete in the Atlantic 10 conference in a variety of men’s and women’s sports. The men’s basketball team has become a regular in the NCAA Tournament. College basketball is at the top of the sports menu every March as well. The State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament comes to town at the Scottrade Center and the winner earns an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
