THE OPPORTUNITY The Associate Vice President for Marketing & Communications at San José State University is responsible for developing and managing the university’s marketing, branding and communications plan utilizing innovative, cutting-edge strategies.

THE UNIVERSITY Mission In collaboration with nearby industries and communities, SJSU faculty and staff are dedicated to achieving the university’s mission as a responsive institution of the state of California to: enrich the lives of its students; transmit knowledge to its students along with the necessary skills for applying it in the service of our society; and expand the base of knowledge through research and scholarship.

Background San José State University (SJSU) is a major, comprehensive public university located in the center of San José, California - the heart of Silicon Valley. As the oldest state university in California, SJSU’s distinctive character has been forged by its long history, its location and its vision – a blend of the old and the new, the traditional and the innovative. Among SJSU’s most prized traditions is a commitment to offer access to higher education to all persons who meet the criteria for admission, yielding one of the most diverse student bodies in the country. SJSU takes pride in and is firmly committed to teaching and learning, with a faculty that is active in scholarship, research, technological innovation, community service and the arts. The University occupies 19 blocks in downtown San José with 23 academic buildings and seven residence halls. Located 1.5 miles away on 62 acres is the South Campus, which includes the Spartan Stadium and athletics fields.

Academics SJSU grants bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 134 areas of study. Quality teaching and small classes are a priority, where tenured professors teach introductory as well as advanced courses. Among the top 200 universities in research and development expenditures (as surveyed by the National Science Foundation), SJSU offers rigorous course work and research opportunities to more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with approximately 700 tenure/tenure track faculty and 1,400 staff.

LEADERSHIP Dr. Mohammad H. Qayoumi assumed office as the 28th president of San Jose State University on July 1, 2011. Previously, Dr. Qayoumi served as president of California State University East Bay from 2006 to 2011. He came to Cal State East Bay from California State University Northridge, where he served as Vice President for Administration & Finance and CFO from 2000 to 2006. He has over 32 years of engineering and administrative experience in several universities. A senior fellow with California Council on Science and Technology (CCST), Dr. Qayoumi is also a member of several local Boards including the Bay Area Council, the Bay Area Council Economic Institute, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Joint Venture Silicon Valley, KQED, the Commonwealth Club, Blue Shield of California and California STEM Learning Network. Currently, San José State is in the process of identifying a new Vice President for University Advancement. It is expected that the selected candidate will be in place by December, allowing the new VPUA to be involved in the AVP for Marketing & Communications finalist interviews.

THE POSITION Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Associate Vice President for Marketing & Communications develops and manages the university marketing, branding and communications plan utilizing innovative, cutting-edge strategies. The position oversees the university website and social media presence; plans and executes internal and external communications; oversees fundraising communications; publishes the university’s flagship magazine, Washington Square; and provides design, editorial and other communications services for a wide variety of stakeholders throughout the campus and broader community. The AVP is responsible for implementing a university-wide integrated marketing and communications plan that will positively impact the University’s mission, goals, strategic objectives, and constituency relations in alignment with the campus’ Vision 2017. In addition, the AVP advises campus executives on innovative communications and builds working partnerships with campus leaders and stakeholders including college deans, faculty members, and the broader community. Acceleration: The Campaign for San Jose State University In 2010, SJSU announced the launch of “Acceleration,” marking the first time in its 154-year history that the University has undertaken a highly organized, resourced and targeted effort to raise millions of dollars. The campaign encompasses all seven colleges, the University Library, Student Affairs and Intercollegiate Athletics. SJSU will seek gifts from private individuals, corporations and foundations in support of four areas: Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Scholarship ($75 million), An Investment in Students ($67 million), The Gateway to Silicon Valley and Beyond ($24 million), and Support for Existing Programs ($34 million).

RESPONSIBILITIES •

Develop, implement and measure results from an innovative, cutting-edge marketing and branding strategy that effectively positions and provides visibility for San Jose State in the region.



Manage a talented team of marketing and communications staff.

Leveraging emerging trends and principles in the industry; create and promote the use of key university messages and ensure campus-wide commitment to the university’s brand identity.



Manage the university’s print, digital, web and social media presence for marketing, branding, and communications.



Provide leadership, strategic direction and execution of campaign and other development communications.



Work collaboratively with the public affairs team on advocacy and emergency communications.



Serve as speechwriter for the president and for the other top administrators, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS •

Ten years of progressive marketing, communication and branding experience is required, with five years at the senior level; demonstrated skill in management and leadership.



Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment, handles multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects, and meet deadlines; experience in managing complicated assignments with multiple contributors, editors, and stakeholders in a highly organized fashion.



Specialized skills to direct a marketing program, including the development of strategic marketing plans for promoting the image of the university; producing publications; managing and supervising the operation of a fastpaced unit; and managing cooperative working relationships with students, staff, faculty and alumni.



Strong writing skills in a variety of formats, including strategic communications plans that include clear timelines, messaging documents, and website/digital media content.



Expertise in working with emerging media outlets, including blogs and social media; knowledge of web trends as well as an understanding of the role these technologies play in overall communications.



Thorough knowledge of feature writing, magazine production, procedures and practices, and communication and dissemination techniques and methods.



Knowledge of design as a communication tool and how design supports key messages and effective communication overall.



Knowledge of development and campaign communications, publications and marketing techniques.



Ability to apply principles and practices, especially as applied in a college or university; an interest in, and familiarity with, public higher education.

Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in written and presentation formats as appropriate for the needs of the audience.



Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.
