Bradford Playhouse Technical Rider

The Bradford Playhouse is a versatile theatre and performance space dating from the 1930’s.There are 5 performance spaces available in the venue with varying degrees of technical equipment/support. The performance spaces are:

-

The auditorium is a 265 seater proscenium arch traditional theatre space with counterweight flying. The Isherwood studio space is a flexible black box space with movable seating and a maximum capacity of 70 and a standard capacity of 40. The bar has a maximum capacity of 200. The simple regular performance space comfortably seats 50/60. The Sewing Room Bar and our Room at the Top are blank canvases that people can very much make their own. We would like all visiting companies to have a safe and successful visit to The New Bradford Playhouse. This technical rider provides guidance to what is available within the building but is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to every situation.

We expect all companies to understand and comply with all current health and safety legislation including the health and safety at work act 1974 and the licencing act 2003.

Please ensure you have read all the information in this document before visiting the New Bradford Playhouse. Technical Equipment All equipment was available at the time of writing this rider and all efforts will be made to ensure that equipment is maintained and where appropriate swiftly repaired. However, it may be the case that some equipment will be unavailable/in the process of being repaired at the time of your event. If there are any equipment items which you deem essential for your performance please contact us at least 2 weeks prior to your event. 1. The Get In – Important, especially for the auditorium 1.1 The get in to the auditorium is extremely tight. The corridors to the main auditorium are the main access point. The larger staircase has two left turns in quick succession which then narrows to a gap only 1.00m wide by 1.95m tall. 1.2 There is a second access point available to the auditorium. This is accessed through the workshop under the stage and access is then through a trap door stage right. The dimensions of this access space are 2.10m long by 0.36m wide. Any set/equipment coming through this gap will have to be manually lifted into the auditorium. 1.3 It is recommended that any set intended to be used in the auditorium is able to be flat packed. 1.4 Access to Studio@, Sewing Room Bar and Room at the Top is also limited to any items that can pass through a standard doorway. 1.5 Access to the bar is similarly limited. 1.6 There is no lift access to any of the spaces and access to all spaces involves stairs. We recommend that if your event is reliant on significant set and/or equipment that you consider allowing additional time for your get in/get out and/or have additional technical crew available.

Technical cover may be required for events in other spaces at the discretion of the Venue. You will be advised when booking if technical cover is required in addition to the hire price.

9. Risk Assessments For any aspect of your show or set where trips, falls, burns or traps are likely to be caused or where injury might happen due to specialist equipment or procedures taking place a risk assessment needs to be carried out. Please use the proforma (appendix 1). This needs to be returned to the venue manager 4 weeks before performance. In the event of equipment, staging or procedures taking place that have not been risk assessed, our duty technician has the right to stop or change an element of your show. Every endeavour will be taken to safely assess and put in place safe control measures to make things happen. If you have any element of your show you are unsure about please ask. Our team have a great deal of experience making exciting things happen safely.

General Information and a couple of rules: The technicians provided by the New Bradford Playhouse are there to help your performance to happen and we will endeavour to do so. That said we do have a couple of definite rules – again not a definitive list - and since we don’t like to use the word no we thought we would let you know upfront what they are: -

-

The Duty Technician has the right to stop any aspect of your show if they deem your actions to be unsafe and/or in breach of any Health and Safety legislation. They will only do this once all avenues have been explored to try and ensure that the action can be achieved safely. Please let us know if you are going to fly people upside down, use fire, blow things up, sword fight etc. We want to make these things happen safely. Please let us know if you are using strobe lighting or other flashing effects at least 4 weeks prior to your event so we can make sure we comply with all the legislation and have signage up. Only trained staff can use the flying system in the auditorium – especially when loading and unloading flying bars. Please don’t assume you can leave things at the end of your performance. We only have a limited amount of space. All set, props and wood you have cut up from our workshop must be removed from site. If items are left the cost of a skip hire will be applied to your show. Please talk to us if you would like ts to help to arrange this anyway. Please ensure that all appropriate set and/or equipment is fireproofed. We have a safety curtain in the auditorium which is 4.90m from the back wall and 1.58m from the end of the stage. This MUST be shown to the audience at some point either prior to the show or during an interval so please ensure that there is no solid set obstructing the safety curtain. We have no parking on site. We really mean this! Please don’t consume alcohol back stage, we have a very reasonably priced bar for you to do this following your event. We have neighbours who are close to us – especially opposite the front door/main get in point. Please bear this in mind when either performing, or during your get in and get out. We retain the right to ensure you to keep your performance within reasonable parameters.
