Barry Irvin Chairman Giant Steps Sydney

Autism People affected by autism typically display major impairments in social interaction, communication and behaviour (restricted interests and repetitive behaviours). These are commonly referred to as the Triad of Impairments but the impairments may not be evenly spread. While people with autism share common traits, no two individuals are the same. For example, it was once thought that all children with Autism Spectrum Disorder were unresponsive and aloof, never showing affection. We now know ASDs are much more complex with a variety of symptoms and characteristics that can occur in different combinations and varying degrees of severity. Many people with autism also have sensory sensitivities, that is, over or under sensitivity to sight, touch, taste, smell, sound, temperature and pain. As a result of their impairments, people with autism often experience overwhelming anxiety, frustration and confusion when faced with the demands of everyday life. Recent international research suggests an average prevalence of autism in 1 in every 175 children (Insel, 2006). It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to affect boys than girls. There is no known cure, but early intervention, specialised education and structured support can help develop a child’s skills and minimise behaviour problems, and enable each child, whatever their level of disability, to achieve as great a degree of independence as possible. Experience has shown that the earlier a child with autism can be enrolled in an early intervention program, the better his/her outcomes. With the right help, children can learn to speak, read and participate in everyday life.

Giant Steps’ Services Giant Steps has a multifaceted approach to the provision of services to children with autism and their families, whilst spreading a culture of caring and professional excellence through the broader community. Our school provides a transdisciplinary approach to education combining music, occupational and speech therapy delivered across the programs. We also offer professional skill development for staff and other health professionals. Our Community College provides young adults with a relevant and engaging learning and recreational postschool environment. Giant Steps now operates four age-based programs: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Early Learning (3 – 5 year olds) Primary (5 – 12 year olds) Secondary (12 – 18 year olds) Community College (school leavers)

Giant Steps’ Approach There is no specific treatment or therapy protocol when it comes to dealing with the condition. As with the spectrum of disorders, there is also a spectrum of treatments and therapies. While some parents will report marked improvements using a therapy or intervention program, others may find little or no impact upon their child’s condition. Some parents may talk of a child ‘recovering’ from autism, while others will find only an improvement in the day-to-day management of their child’s condition. Currently, no therapy or treatment has been empirically verified. However, research suggests that successful programs contain the same key components: 

autism specific curriculum content focusing on attention, compliance, imitation, language and social skills  need for highly supportive teaching environments and generalisation strategies  need for predictability and routine  a functional approach to problem behaviours  transition from the preschool classroom  family involvement* (*A review of the Research to Identify the Most Effective Models of Best Practise in the Management of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dr Jacqueline M. Roberts, Sydney University, 2004) At Giant Steps, a combination of education and therapy combine in a transdisciplinary model of service delivery across the organisation.

Other Services Giant Steps Sydney Offers Our outreach services range from private speech, occupational and music therapies to educational support, parent training and training amongst professionals and providers in the wider community. We also run a playgroup through Stepping Stones Early Learning for children on the eligibility list, called ‘Play Steps’. During the school holidays we run a respite program for our children to give families a break. Our Secondary students attend GOOSH (Giant Steps Out Of School Hours) for an extra hour each day where they undertake age appropriate recreational activities. We also run 3 age-based siblings programs to support the siblings of the Giant Steps children.

Giant Steps Funding Giant Steps Sydney is a registered charity (Reg. No. DGR 32778) and all donations are tax deductible. Government funding meets approximately half the cost of running Giant Steps. The remainder is raised through donations and fund-raising events such as the ball. Giant Steps does not charge fees.

Tombola The Tombola is a tradition at the Giant Steps Ball. Originating in southern Italy, the Tombola is a popular game in numerous countries. Winners are drawn from a tumbling barrel containing a copy of every number. The number is then checked against a collection of prizes with numbers attached to them. We have modified our Tombola over the years and instead of numbers, we use tokens to enable guests to claim their prize. This year we are using 1920’s inspired beads, candles and rings priced at $20, $50 and $80 as the Tombola token. They will be on sale from the start of the evening until 10.45 pm or they are sold out. Volunteers will be coming around to all the tables with the tokens for sale. They will also be available from the Tombola counter at the rear of the room. You will find credit card payment forms on your table, but we ask that they only be used for purchases of $50 and over. If you fill out a credit card payment form, you do not need to process your payment using the eftpos machines. To claim your prize you need to take your token to the Tombola counter and have it marked and you will then receive your prize which is chosen from its price category as a lucky dip (you can keep the token). Prizes in each category are usually worth more than the price you pay for your token. PRIZES ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. Tombola prizes have all been donated. We would like to thank all the Giant Steps Families who contributed and the following individuals and companies for their Tombola and other donations: AMF Bowling Penny Angus Arum Design Astorri Family Badger Family Milisa & Jacob Badrov Body & Soul Health Centre Edna Bowerman Bremner Family Bryant Family Sue Brown Captain Cook Cruises Julie and Le Chan Tania Chee Nadia D'amico Da Calvino Restaurant, Mosman Ding Family Elk Accessories Michael and Helen Evans Glover Family Good Guys Prospect Griffiths Family Florence Halim Heffron Family Hill Family Hills Family Nikki & Matt Hopkins Howards Storage World

The Enormous Horns Many people have tried to describe The Enormous Horns - and most of them have failed. They've been called a smouldering funk band, a brassy soul revue, a hep jazz combo and a wild rock & roll band. In truth, they're a little bit of all those things - but most of all, they're a party band. From their diverse set list to their hilarious, energetic performances, The Enormous Horns are ultimately dedicated to entertainment. Combining great musicianship with a highly visual stage show that sometimes borders on the theatrical, the Enormous Horns incorporate everything from current radio hits to the Blues Brothers and Sixties Soul, from Frank Sinatra to Ricky Martin, Glenn Miller to Disco, costumed routines from the Village People and Rocky Horror Show, a "Retro" medley and much more. For over fifteen years now the Enormous Horns have toured Australia, Asia and the South Pacific, attracting a large and loyal following, whilst earning respect within the entertainment industry. www.enormoushorns.com.au

The Rules Pledges Giant Steps aims to provide a world-class best-practice program for children and young adults with autism and in order to deliver this program, we need to raise approximately $40,000 per child every year on top of government funding to provide our current level of service. Tonight we are asking for pledges for: 

$10,000 - will fund our families and sibling support program for 6 months. This vital program provides support to families in crisis and runs age appropriate support groups for the siblings of the Giant Steps children.

$5,000 - will provide speech therapy support to a class for one year.

$2,500 - will provide community access to a class for 6 months. This program teaches children how to shop, catch public transport and learn important everyday life skills.

$1,000 - will provide specialised swimming lessons to a class for a term.

$500 - will provide art materials to a class for a year.

$200 - will provide music therapy to a class for a week.

$100 - will provide a session of occupational therapy to one child.

Your pledge will support the many important programs run by Giant Steps and any amount helps! Pledges will be requested immediately after the Giant Steps film presentation and are fully tax deductible. You will find a pink pledge form on your table. If you would like to make a pledge please complete the pledge form and hand it to a volunteer who will collect it when announced by the MC. If you would like to make a pledge at any other time of the evening, please hand in your form to a volunteer or to the Tombola/Cashier desk at the rear of the room. If you fill out a form, you do not need to process your payment using the eftpos machines. A tax deductible receipt will be posted to donors shortly after the Ball. Thank you for supporting Giant Steps!

Live Auction The Auction is conducted live on the night. The highest bidder will be the purchaser of the item. The Auctioneer’s decision will be final. The successful bidder will be asked to complete a Payment Card at the end of the sale of the item. All items must be paid for on the night by cheque, cash or credit card. Cheques are preferable. Purchase receipts (non-tax deductible) will be posted to the buyer shortly after the Ball.

12

Silent Auction Tonight we are using an electronic bidding system. This is how it works:

Each table has been allocated two handsets, there are additional handsets located in the silent auction display area. Volunteers will also carry extra handsets. Should you encounter any problems please ask a volunteer for assistance or go to the Tombola counter at the rear of the room. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE HANDSETS FROM WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED AS THIS WILL INCONVENIENCE OTHER GUESTS.

Each guest has been allocated their own Smartcard. You will find your Smartcard on your table. Please leave your Smartcard on your table at the end of the night. Taking your Smartcard will incur a fee for Giant Steps.

You cannot make a bid without your Smartcard. Please notify a volunteer or go to the Tombola counter if you do not have a Smartcard and one will be made up for you.

Bid increments have been set for each item and some items will differ. The system will not allow you to bid below the bid increment for that item. Bid increments will be displayed on the handsets.

The Silent Auction will close at 11.00 pm and the handsets will not accept any further bids after this time.

If you make a mistake or need assistance, please contact a volunteer or go to the Tombola counter.

To see if you are the successful bidder of an item after the Silent Auction has closed, check the scrolling screens or check on the handsets. Successful bidders should make their way to the Cashier desk at the rear of the room from 10 minutes after the Silent Auction has closed to pay for and collect their item(s). All items must be paid for and collected by 12.30 am.

Auction items that are not collected tonight will be transported back to Giant Steps at Gladesville. It is the purchaser’s responsibility to arrange for collection of the auction item from Giant Steps and bear any courier costs involved if they cannot collect the auction item themselves.

13

Tip:

Payment for Silent Auction items must be finalised on the night by cheque, cash or credit card. Cheques are preferable. We also accept Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club and American Express; although due to high fees we prefer Visa or MasterCard if using a credit card.

If the successful bidder has left before the closure of the Silent Auction, Giant Steps will contact the successful bidder after the Ball to arrange for payment and collection of the item. To find out the current bid on an item you don’t have to wait for the scrolling screens to come around to your lot number, simply enter the lot number on your handset and the current highest bidder and bid amount will then be displayed for your information.

Other information Items purchased in the auctions are not tax deductible. Tax deductible receipts cannot be issued for Auction items, Tombola or Raffle, only for pledges and donations. The Ball is input taxed and GST will not be charged on any purchases made. Auction items are not transferable or redeemable for cash. The catalogue and auction item display are accurate to the best of our knowledge at the time of printing. Unless otherwise specified in the catalogue or auction item display, all vouchers and certificates will expire 12 months from the date of the Ball. Bidders should refer to the auction item display for conditions. All items have been delivered or pledged to Giant Steps in good faith. Giant Steps makes no warranty about any auction item, raffle or tombola prize and does not accept any responsibility if the donor of the item or prize fails to supply in accordance with the pledge or if goods are not fit for purpose. Prizes are not exchangeable for other goods or cash and are not refundable.

It's also the first time Robert Parker's Wine Advocate has awarded any Grange this perfect score. This one is truly special - don't miss out. Rarely a wine will receive such outstanding praise from the world's most influential wine publication, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, but the 2008 Penfolds Grange has done just that scoring a perfect 100 points. This will be one of the most sought after vintages yet. Donated by Mrs Catherine & Mr Colin Williams

Salvador Dali 'Dante in Doubt', 1963 Dante in Doubt' Paradise Canto 7, 1963. Original colour woodblock engraving from Dali's 'Divine Comedy' suite. The suite, comprised of 101 watercolours, contains incredible imagery ranging from the grotesque to the sublime as our artist follows Dante from the deepest circles of Hell, up the mountain of Purgatory, and into heavenly Paradise. Pablo Picasso 'Toreros', 1961 Original black & white lithograph from Picasso's 'A Los Toros' series. The series was a tribute to the bullfight. As a child, Picasso was taken to the bullfight by his father and it became an obsession which haunted his memory. Picasso saw himself as a Picador (bullfighter) in his own life. Like Picasso, the Picador was a man at war with himself, with the bull, with his family and with life - and without caring for any other things. Donated by Chase Galleries

267.

Henri Laurens 'Apollon', 1952 Original colour lithograph from a special edition of the deluxe art review 'Verve'. One of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century, Henri Laurens was also a major printmaker, illustrator and stage designer and a pivotal figure in the Cubism art movement. Apollon is a fine example of his later works, which evolved into a more fluid and personal statement, most notably in the voluptuous forms of his famous nudes. Donated by Chase Galleries
