Five Washington seniors will be playing their final career games in front of the hometown crowd. Emily Autrey, Kellie Dalan, Alicia Heathcote, Loree Payne and Cheryl Sorenson will be honored in a special pregame ceremony. The Huskies enter the week clinging to second-place in the Pac10 standings, a half game ahead of Arizona (18-7, 11-5). With Stanford clinching the Pac-10 title last week, the No. 2 seed of the conference tournament is still up for grabs. The Huskies look to extend their 13-game home winning streak and should they come away with a victory vs. the Cougars, they would go undefeated at home for the first time since the 1990. The Huskies have won the last 15-straight meetings with the Cougars, including this season’s Pac-10 opener for both teams in Pullman (77-69). WSU hosts Idaho Thursday before coming to Seattle. Payne Named To First-Team Academic All-District: Senior Loree Payne earned Verizon Academic All-District honors for the second-straight year. Payne, a secondteam selection last year, earned a first-team nod this year which puts her on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors. She has a 3.65 grade point average and is majoring in psychology. Payne was the lone Pac-10 Player on the District VIII first-team. Home Sweet Home: The Huskies continue their roll as an unbeatable team at home this season. UW has won 13 straight at Bank of America Arena, tying for the fifthlongest home winning streak in Husky history. UW also won 13 straight during the 1988-89 seasons. The school record for a home winning streak is 30 games, set from 1986-88. UW credits much of its home success to stellar fan support, as the Huskies lead the Pac-10 with an average crowd of 4,862 fans. UW owns five of the top-seven home attendances marks in the Pac-10 this season: (1) vs. UCLA, Feb. 1 (8,408), (2) vs. Stanford, Feb. 13 (8,083), (5) vs. Oregon State, Jan. 25 (5,964), (6) vs. Arizona, Jan. 11 (5,458) and (7) vs. Cal, Feb. 15 (5,453). Washington’s average attendance also ranks 18th in the nation. Last Week Recap: Washington embarked on its final regular season road trip and split a pair of games at the Oregon schools. Road woes continued for the Huskies as they lost their fourth-straight game away from Seattle, falling 100-86 to Oregon State in Corvallis, Feb. 20. Four players scored in double-figures including a game-high 28 points from junior Giuliana Mendiola, but it wasn’t enough to propel the Huskies to the victory. OSU held as much as a 29-point lead in the first half, but the UW cut the deficit to just seven points with 1:30 left in the game. OSU then sank nine of 10 freethrows to keep UW at bay. Senior Loree Payne scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half. Washington finally snapped its losing streak on the road and made a little bit of history in Eugene, downing the Ducks 75-59 on Feb. 22 and winnng for the first time at Mac Court since 1993. Payne led the way with 24 points, while senior Kellie Dalan chipped in a season-high 23. 20-Point Scorers: Five different Huskies have reached the 20-point plateau this season, making Washington one of just eight Division I teams to claim that distinction this season. The Huskies are the lone Pac-10 among those eight. Junior Giuliana Mendiola leads the way with nine 20-pt. games this season, followed by senior Loree Payne (6), senior Emily Autrey (2), junior Andrea Lalum (2) and senior Kellie Dalan (1).

Washington Women’s Basketball -- Feb. 27, 2003 UW Reaches .500 Mark On The Road: As seems to be the trend this season in the Pac-10, Washington has struggled when playing games away from its home court. Despite sporting a unblemished 13-0 record at home, the Huskies have struggled on the road. UW snapped a four-game road losing streak at Oregon to reach the .500 mark overall, but the Huskies are 4-5 against Pac-10 teams. League-leading Stanford and UCLA are the only teams with winning records away from their home courts in conference play. The Huskies average 83.2 points at home and allow their opponents just 61.4 points. While on the road, UW has scored just 71.3 points per game while its opponent averaged 74.2 points. Washington’s shooting numbers are lopsided as well: 49.3 percent from the field at home, 40.7 percent on the road; 42.9 percent from three-point range at home, 31.6 percent on the road. Mendiola Earns Third Pac-10 Player of the Week Nod: Junior Giuliana Mendiola continues to put up Conference Player of the Year type performances, earning her third Pac-10 Player of the Week honor of the season for her performance vs. the Bay Area schools Feb. 13-15. Mendiola is the first player in Husky history to earn three Pac-10 Player of the Week nods in a single-season. Three other players (Amy Mickelson-1990, Rhonda Smith-1994, and Amber Hall-1998) were two-time selections but Mendiola is the first three-time selection. Mendiola averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds in those two games. She was UW’s high-scorer in the 92-68 upset of Stanford, scoring 20 points and adding team highs of seven assists and five rebounds. Mendiola has scored at least 20 points in six of the last eight games, including a span of five consecutive games (Jan. 30-Feb. 13) in which she averaged 25.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 6.6 assists per contest. High-Scoring Huskies: Washington began the week leading the Pac-10 in scoring offense with 77.5 points per game. The Huskies are also ranked 12th in the nation in that category. Duke is the national leader with 82.9 points. The Huskies have also posted an average margin of victory of 18.3 points in their 20 wins, including a 21.8 point margin in their 13 home wins. Washington has won 16 games by at least a 10-point margin. (vs. Oregon State 2/ 20)…Mendiola is the Pac-10 leader in assists (5.46) and 3-point shooting percentage (.462) and ranks third in scoring (17.2) and FT percentage (.835)…Emily Autrey ranks second in the Pac-10 in 3-

point shooting percentage (.451)…senior Loree Payne ranks second in 3-pointers made (2.38) UW Leads Pac-10, Ranks Third Nationally In 3-Pointers: As of Feb. 24, the Huskies ranked third in the nation with 8.4 three-pointers per game. Villanova is the nation’s leader with 8.8 treys per game. UW has drained at least 10 three-pointers in nine games and its 218 treys lead the Pac-10 this season. Senior Loree Payne, UW’s all-time career leader in 3-pointers, is second among conference players with 62. UW has the top two players in the conference in three-point shooting percentage. Junior Giuliana Mendiola is first with a .462 percentage (42-91) and senior Emily Autrey is third with a .451 percentage (32-71). The Huskies tied their Pac-10 and school records with 16 three-pointers vs. St. Bonaventure Nov. 29, while adding 15 vs. North Carolina State and UCLA (2/1). UW shares the Pac-10 record with Stanford. More National Rankings: As of Feb. 24, UW ranked fourth in the nation in assists (18.9), 19th in three-point field goal percentage (37.7) and 28th in FG percentage (45.3). Mendiola Second On All-Time Assists List, Needs 20 To Set Single Season Record: With a league-leading 142 assists for far this season, junior Giuliana Mendiola has moved into second-place on Washington’s career assists list. She currently has 420, second only behind Leteia Hughley (559, 1982-85). Mendiola’s five assists vs. Oregon moved her into second past Karen Murray (416, 198184). In fact, she needs just 20 more assists to set the single-season record. Lisa Raschow holds the UW record with 161 (1987). Last year as a sophomore, Mendiola also turned in the third-highest single season assists (152) in UW history. Katia Foucade (1995, 157) is second on that list. Payne Sets UW Career Three-Pointers Record: Netting a trio of treys vs. Cal and Stanford in January, senior Loree Payne surpassed her former Husky teammate Megan Franza to claim the UW career record for three-pointers made. Payne currently has 241 career three-pointers, 33 more than Franza who had 211 from 1997-01. Payne also moved ahead of Franza on the Pac-10 list, to secure second only to Arizona’s Lisa Griffith (285). Payne also needs just two 3-point attempts to break Franza’s school record in that category. UW Career 3-Point FG Made 1. Loree Payne 1999241 2. Megan Franza 1997-01 211 3. Jamie Redd 1995-99 192

Washington Women’s Basketball -- Feb. 27, 2003 All-America Candidates Leading The Way: As was expected, All-America candidates Loree Payne and Giuliana Mendiola have led the way for the Huskies so far this season. Mendiola has averaged 17.5 points a contest and Payne has averaged 15.2. Both were All-Pac-10 first-team selections last year. In her third season as a Husky team captain, Payne has scored in double-figures in 19 games, including career-highs of 29 vs. Washington State and Oregon. She also leads the team with 62 three-pointers and has recently set the UW career record (241). Mendiola, in her second year as team co-captain, has scored in double-figures in all but two games, while also leading the team with 6.5 rebounds. Mendiola has also dished out a team-high 142 assists. The Husky guard hit the game-winning shot in UW’s 83-81 overtime win at USC Jan. 5, and has been the only Husky named Pac-10 Player of the Week this year (three times - Dec. 2-8/Jan. 27-Feb.1/Feb. 10-17). Mendiola has notched seven double-doubles this season and has 12 in her Husky career. She came just two assists shy of notching the second triple-double in UW history with 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists vs. USC Jan. 30, after tying the school record for singlegame assists (13) vs. Oregon State, Jan. 25. She was also just three assists short of another triple-double vs. UCLA with a schoolrecord 43 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Dalan Makes Most Of Return To The Lineup: Senior Kellie Dalan returned to the starting lineup vs. Stanford, Feb. 13, for the first time since Dec. 20 and notched four-straight standout performances in which she’s averaged 15 points and four rebounds. Dalan registered her third and fourth-straight double-figure scoring games with 14 points vs. Oregon State, and a season-high 23 vs. Oregon last week. Against Stanford, Dalan was the Huskies’ third-leading scorer with 13 points and tied Giuliana Mendiola for the team-high in rebounds (six). She followed up that performance with 10 points, five rebounds and two assists in UW’s win over Cal. Prior to Feb. 13, Dalan had come off the bench since returning to the court on Jan. 23 vs. Oregon. She had been out with a stress fracture since Dec. 20. O’Neill Keeps Heatin’ Up: Sophomore Kristen O’Neill had big shoes to fill when stepping in for Kayla Burt in the starting five, but the 6-1 guard has thrived. Since moving into the starting five, O’Neill has established career highs in either points or rebounds. First she recorded then-career-highs in points (17) and rebounds (nine) against Arizona, Jan. 11, as well as hitting the game-winning shot to lift UW to the dramatic 60-59 win. She followed up that performance with a new career-high 18 points vs. Cal, Jan. 18. Against Oregon, Jan. 23, she upped her career total of rebounds to 12, tying for the highest rebound total by a Husky this season. She then pulled down double-figures in rebounds in back-to-back games (10 vs. OSU, Jan. 25). O’Neill came off the bench in UW’s first 10 games, after starting 24 as a freshman last year. She has started the last 16. Lalum Steady As She Goes: Junior forward Andrea Lalum is right behind Mendiola and Payne when it comes to offensive production. Averaging 10.9 points a game, Lalum has scored in doublefigures in 16 games (eight of the last 11) including two performances of 20 points or more. Lalum scored a season-high 23 points vs. Iowa State, two shy of matching her career-high set last year, including the game-winning bucket in the waning seconds of the game. She also recorded her ninth-career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds vs. Houston at the N.C. State Tournament. Injury Update: Senior Kellie Dalan made her return to action vs. Oregon, Jan. 23, after being out nearly a month with a stress fracture in her right foot …sophomore Kirsten Brockman is out for the season, recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture in her left foot…freshman Angie Jones is rehabilitating her right knee after ACL surgery Nov. 22…Jones tore the same ACL during her junior season at Holy Names Academy (Seattle)…freshman Jill Bell had surgery to repair a ligament in her left thumb Nov. 7 and has been cleared to play.

Payne Continues To Climb UW Top-10 Scoring List: Loree Payne has 1,644 career points and is just the ninth-player in school history to reach the 1,500-point plateau. Payne continues her climb, most recently moving into the No. 6 spot with 22 points vs. Oregon State, Thursday. She surpassed former teammate Megan Franza (199701) who had 1,612 career points. Payne, just the 17th player in UW history to score at least 1,000 points, broke into the UW Top-10 career scoring list with her first bucket vs. Texas Tech, Nov. 24. Her three-pointer gave her 1,263 career points and sole possession of 10th place on the list. UW Career Scoring Leaders 1. Jamie Redd 1995-99 2027 2. Rhonda Smith 1992-95 1801 3. Payne Named Semi-Finalist For Senior CLASS Award: Senior Loree Payne was one of 30 semi-finalists for the second annual Senior CLASS Award. Payne, though, was not included on the list of 10 finalists released last week. The Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award is presented to the nation’s senior player of the year for NCAA Div. I men’s and women’s basketball. The award was developed in response to the recent trend of college basketball players leaving early to turn professional. Last year, Connecticut’s Sue Bird and Maryland’s Juan Dixon each won the award. Mendiola On Payne’s Heels In Career 3-Pointers: Junior Giuliana Mendiola is one year behind fellow All-America candidate senior Loree Payne, but she is on her heels on the UW career three-point scoring lists. Mendiola is sixth all-time in three-pointers made (108) and is seventh in three-pointers attempted (286). In fact, Mendiola entered the season ranked ahead of Payne in career three-point field goal percentage. Mendiola is fifth (.378) and Payne is sixth (.341). UW Career 3-Point FG Made 1. Sister Act: For the second-straight season, the Husky roster boasts two sets of sisters: juniors Giuliana and Gioconda Mendiola, and senior Kellie Dalan and sophomore Kristen O’Neill. The Mendiolas are one year apart in age, almost to the day, but Gioconda took a year off between high school graduation and college so that she could play four years of college ball with her sister. Kellie Dalan, formerly O’Neill, got married this summer, hence the name change. The only other pair of sisters to play together at Washington were Heidi (1993-96) and Molly Hills (1996-99), who overlapped the 1996 season. Husky Coaching Staff: Aiming to guide the Huskies to their sixth postseason appearance during her brief tenure, UW head coach June Daugherty enters her seventh season at the helm of the women’s basketball program. She has an overall record of 120-84 at Washington and a 13-year career head coaching mark of 243158. Daugherty has been named one of 25 finalists for the 2003 Naismith Women’s College Basketball Coach of the Year. Sunny Smallwood is in her 10th year as a Husky women’s basketball assistant, while Mike Daugherty enters his seventh season. Shimmy Gray enters her third year on staff.

Washington Women’s Basketball -- Feb. 27, 2003 Kayla Burt’s UW Career Comes To A Close: Washington announced Jan. 6 that Husky sophomore Kayla Burt will no longer play Div. I basketball due to being diagnosed with a rare heart condition called Long Q-T Syndrome. Burt’s heart stopped beating on New Year’s Eve and her teammates came to her rescue, performing CPR until paramedics could arrive. On Jan. 6 she had surgery to implant a defibrillator in the right side of her chest, a device which will monitor her heart rhythm and shock it back to a normal rhythm should an abnormality occur again. Burt started all 10 Husky games before falling ill. She averaged eight points and 3.7 rebounds a game. Burt turned in a stellar effort in UW’s Dec. 22 win over Iowa State, either matching or setting career highs in rebounds (seven), assists (eight), three-pointers made (three) and three-pointers attempted (six). Upon her return to the team, she was asked by her teammates to accept the role of co-captain which she accepted. Burt will join previous co-captains seniors Loree Payne and Cheryl Sorenson and junior Giuliana Mendiola. She will retain her scholarship until graduation. New Faces: Washington’s roster boasts four new faces this year in redshirt freshman Nicole Castro and true freshmen Jill Bell, Angie Jones and Erica Schelly. Bitten by the preseason injury bug, Bell and Jones have yet to make their collegiate debuts. Jones, from Seattle, tore her ACL in an Oct. 22 practice and had surgery Nov. 22. At Holy Names Academy, Jones led her team to two straight Class 3A state appearances and two consecutive Metro league chamionships. She earned AllMetro first-team honors in 2001 and 2002. Bell, from Bellevue, Wash., had surgery to repair a torn ligament in her left thumb in November and has been cleared to play, but hasn’t appeared in a game yet. At Bellevue High School, Bell led her team to four straight state tournament appearances and four straight league crowns. Castro, from Darwin, Australia, joined the team in January of last year after graduating from high school in the fall of 2002. Castro, who attended St. John’s College High School, was selected twice to the Adidas All-Star Camp in 1999 and 2000 and was named the 2001 Southern Cross Women’s League Youth Player of the Year. Schelly, from Fort Collins, Colo., is the only true freshmen to have seen any playing time. She was honored as a Nike All-American and entered her senior season at Poudre High School as a Street & Smith’s Preseason All-America pick. Schelly led Poudre High to the Class 5A state tournament four straight years and was a four-time first-team allconference honoree. She garnered honorable mention all-state honors as a sophomore and junior.
