2016-17 University of Nevada Men’s Basketball

NOTES The 2015-16 Nevada men’s basketball team is the first in Mountain West and school history to win a national postseason tournament capturing the College Basketball Invitational with an 85-82 overtime victory over Morehead State in the third game of the championships series. Musselman was named the MW Coach of the Year by Bleacher Report. Mussleman led the Pack to a 15-win improvement going from nine wins to 24 in his first season. Nevada was the sixth most improved team in NCAA I . Nevada played a school record 38 games last season and played in the month of April for the first time. Cameron Oliver set the MW freshman record with 99 blocks which is Nevada’s school record. The 99 blocks also ranks him eighth on the school career list. The 99 blocks was third nationally his 2.61 per game ranked 13th. In his first season Oliver was named to the MW Tournament team, coaches defensive team, coaches third team, media second team and the media Freshman of the Year. Oliver set the MW record with 24 rebounds at home against Fresno State and scored 20 points for his first 20-20 game. Was named the MW Player of the Week for his efforts. Oliver entered the NBA draft but chose return for his sophomore season. Nevada returns four starters in Oliver (13.4 ppg, 9.1 rpg), senior D.J. Fenner (13.7 ppg), junior Elijah Foster (2.8 ppg) and sophomore Lindsey Drew (5.3 ppg). Nevada will welcome three transfers who sat out last season and practices with the team; Marcus Marshall (6-3, Sr., G, Missouri State, 19.5 ppg), Leland King II (6-7, Jr., F, Brown, 14.6 ppg) and Jordan Caroline (6-7, So., F, Southern Illinios, 9.2 ppg). A pair of four star freshmen recruits according to Rivals.com will join the team in point guard Deveral Ramsey and forward Josh Hall. Ramsey was ranked 106th by Rivals. Six walk-ons will be on the roster this season. Sophomore David Cunningham is back for his second season while sophomore John Carlson joined the team in the second semester last season and will be eligible to play second semester in 2016-17. Junior’s Zach Zeyen (San Joaquin Delta College) and Collin Weaver (Iowa Western) are two junior college walk-ons. David Kyle and Charlie Tooley are two high school walk-ons. Nevada’s nonconference schedule is one of the most difficult in Pack history. It features eight teams that competed in postseason play, five that won 20 or more games, two finished with a top 50 RPI and four others were in the top 100. Nevada could play additional teams that appeared in the postseason last season in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout depending on who advances. Highlighting the nonconference schedule are November matchups with St. Mary’s and Oregon State along with a trip to Washington in midDecember. The Pack plays in Moraga on Nov. 11 and hosts the Beavers on Nov. 18. The trip to UW is set for Dec. 11. SMC’s RPI last season was 29, OSU was 48 and UW finished with an RPI of 82. Nevada will compete in two tournaments this season; the Great Alaska Shootout and the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas. The eight-team GAS field includes Buffalo, Oakland, UC Davis, Weber State, Drake, Iona, the hosts Alaska Anchorage along with the Wolf Pack. Buffalo, Weber State and Iona competed in the NCAA Championships. Oakland played in the inaugural Las Vegas 16. Nevada squares off against UC Santa Barbara and Towson in Las Vegas. Both teams played in the inaugural Vegas 16 last season. UCSB was19-14 last season and finished with an RPI of 99. The Tigers were 20-13 and posted a final RPI of 156.
