2016-17 DU Women’s Basketball | 14

Kerry Cremeans Head Coach :: 5th Season Florida, 1994 Kentucky, 2004

Kerry Cremeans (krah-MEANS) enters her fifth season as head coach of the University of Denver women’s basketball program for the upcoming 2016-17 season. Cremeans career at DU is highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Summit League Championships in 201314. In 2015-16, Cremeans led a very youthful Pioneers squad against three NCAA opponents during the year, starting with then-No. 3 Notre Dame in the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas over Thanksgiving break. Denver then met up with Colorado State at home during the middle in homestand in December, followed by a two-game season series against South Dakota State. Cremeans also coached senior Paige Bradley to a Summit League All-League honorable mention. Bradley was also the first player to finish all four years under Cremeans, finishing 12th on the all-time scoring list. The 2015-16 Pioneer squad was also named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, compiling a 3.484 cumulative GPA. The team earned a No. 17-ranking among all NCAA Division I institutions across the country. In the Pioneers third season under Cremeans’ leadership, Denver faced off against Air Force on Dec. 8, 2014, and in that match the Pioneers broke the school record netting 19 3-pointers. DU’s 19 3-point baskets ties them for fourth all-time in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history for made 3-pointers in a single game. Also in that game, senior guard Morgan Van Riper-Rose nailed 10 3-pointers, which is the most in program history in a single game and ties her for third most all-time in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history. In Cremeans’ second season, the Pioneers ended the season making a deep tournament run, ending in the Summit League Championship. In the quarterfinals the Pioneers beat three seed Fort Wayne and in the semifinal game Denver upset two seed IUPUI in overtime. Cremeans led the Pioneers as they advanced to The Summit League Championship Finals against South Dakota. Denver would eventually finish as tournament runners-up, falling just one win shy of receiving a NCAA Tournament berth. Denver finished the 2013-14 season ranked in the top 100 nationally in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and three-point field goal percentage. The Pioneer women’s basketball program also finished the 2014 academic year ranked no. 14 nationally on the WBCA Top 25 Team Honor Roll, after compiling an overall team GPA of 3.498. In April of 2012, Cremeans became the ninth head coach in Denver women’s basketball history since the program’s inception in 1974. Cremeans spent eight seasons at Auburn, including her last two as the program’s associate head coach, helping the Tigers to a SEC Championship in 2009. Cremeans is widely regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country. In her first season with the Pioneers, Cremeans helped Denver to a 14-17 record, including an 8-10 mark in WAC play. Denver recorded its first ever road-win over a BCS conference school when it defeated Oregon 73-62 on Dec. 2. The Pioneers followed that up with victories over Front Range rivals Northern Colorado, Air Force and Colorado State. Denver finished in the top 100 nationally in scoring offense, rebounding margin, assists per-game and assist-turnover ratio. The Pioneers opened the WAC Tournament with a 73-63 victory over Texas State, before being eliminated by Utah State in the tournament quarterfinals. Cremeans arrived at Denver in 2012 with more than 18 years of coaching experience. A 1994 graduate of Florida and four-year basketball letter winner, Cremeans served on the coaching staff of her alma mater in 2003-04 after spending seven years as the top recruiter at Purdue under legendary head coach Nell Fortner. During her time at Purdue, Cremeans helped the Boilermakers to an impressive 181-49 record and seven consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. During the 1999 season, Cremeans played an instrumental role in leading Purdue to an unprecedented 34-1 record and an NCAA title.
