JETMOUNTER MANUAL LAMINATORS Here at Hot Press we have always been known for supplying the best in quality equipment for professional print presentation. As new markets emerge we aim to deliver machinery that is perfect for the job. The home workshop and limited space retail sector has been growing in recent years and though many people would like a JetMounterTM or a Hot Glass Press – they simply do not have the room. With this in mind we are pleased to offer two new machines that will help users in this market.
ML12 MANUAL LAMINATOR
JETMOUNTER MANUAL LAMINATORS
This new manual laminator is perfect for the home user or for those who only need to laminate smaller items. Though built as a table top unit it is still capable of doing a wide variety of jobs. With its opening height of an impressive 20mm, it is perfect for people wanting to produce chunky style acrylic blocks and Citiblok style block mounts. The maximum working width of this model is 335mm which means that work up to the popular Super A3+ size can be accommodated. The height is set with twin adjusters and work is transported through the laminator by a hand crank handle. Due to its light weight construction, when not in use the laminator can be easily stored away. Please note this laminator requires some self assembly which will require a screwdriver.
3
ML25 MANUAL LAMINATOR
Though the JetMounterTM 26 is the most popular machine in our laminator range, it may be a little over specified for the occasional or home user. With our huge range of 650mm wide materials we have been asked for a laminator that will handle this size, but is lighter in weight and with a more basic specification. The ML25 has a working width of 650mm and opens to 20mm high. Work is transported through the laminator by a hand crank handle. Due to its light weight construction and fold up feed tables, the laminator can be easily stored away, when not in use.

JETMOUNTER MOTORSIED LAMINATORS JetMountersTM are designed to be easy to operate whilst producing work to the highest professional standards. They can handle all types of flat artwork, from photographs and paper posters to delicate plastics and vinyls. They are also ideal for processing most board stock, from simple card to MDF and Masonite.
Smaller JetMounters™ are designed to be operated on any desk or work bench and are light-weight for easy storing. Larger laminators can be bench mounted or fitted to a custom designed stand with wheels for easy manoeuvring. The largest JetMounter™ is built on a permanent stand that offers safe and rigid support but allows the operator access to the underside of the machine.
OPERATING WIDTHS
JetMounters™ come in a variety of sizes with maximum operating widths from 457mm to 1630mm. Small jobs can be processed on larger machines with ease, so it is important to consider the maximum width you will require.
BOARD THICKNESS AND ADJUSTMENT
For maximum versatility the JetMountersTM are fitted with variable height adjusters. From the thinnest graphic to the thickest panel it is simple to set up your JetMounter™ to use the right amount of pressure across your work. Please see the specification panel for further details.
FORWARD AND REVERSE OPERATION
Though JetMounters™ are designed to feed your work through from the front to the back, they have a useful reverse operation switch that allows for accurate positioning of precision jobs.
VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL
For new laminator users the variable speed control is a great feature which allows you to build your confidence by using the machine at slower speeds. As your expertise grows you can move to faster speeds and the top speed will save you time and money.
SAFETY FEATURES
Safety in the workshop is vital and the JetMounter™ range of laminators use ‘magic eye’ technology to stop the laminator when a possible obstruction enters the rollers. Additionally, emergency stop buttons and reset procedures ensure safe working conditions for operators.
AUTO OR FOOT OPERATION
JetMountersTM can be set to run automatically for the continuous feed of boards or can be set for foot switch operation.

PRESSURE SENSITITVE MOUNTING FILMS Our comprehensive range of pressure sensitive mounting films are ideal for all standard mounting projects and a wide variety of applications, such as face mounting on acrylic and interchangeable graphics. As you would expect, all of our films use only the highest quality adhesives, carriers and release liners so you can always be assured of the best results.
DOUBLE-SIDED MOUNT FILM
PRESSURE SENSITIVE MOUNTING FILMS
This is our most popular pressure sensitive mounting film. It works well with all kinds of laminators and can even be applied by hand for specialist jobs. The product itself is formed from a clear central carrier film, which is coated on both sides with a very strong adhesive. Each adhesive layer is then protected by a grid-marked carrier paper. The two separate release liners mean that this adhesive can be rolled out on the work bench and simply cut to the correct size for each mounting job. Off-cuts of material need not be wasted, but used for smaller jobs later. This product is suitable for all kinds of artwork from plain paper and posters to inkjet and photographic media. Due to its strength and flexibility it also works well with plastic based media and textured art papers. Double-sided mount film works well with all kinds of mounting substrates, from white display board and foam centred boards to MDF and rigid plastic boards.

WINDOW-ART MOUNT FILM
NEW!
Mounting images to clear acrylic panels, originally practised in the sign making industry, has always been popular. Creating large, illuminated signs for shopping centres, airports and other public areas, where the work is viewed from a distance, only requires a basic, optically clear film. Polypropylene is used as the central core of this film and the product is fine for those looking for an economy product. Synart, as its name suggests, is primarily used for the production of acrylic signage; for artwork that is to be viewed in the home we would suggest looking at our superior Fynart product.

TRANSPARENCY MOUNT FILM FYNARTTM
This is our more established and superior quality optically clear mounting film. For wall art and acrylic blocks this film offers much better colour rendition and is truly invisible even when viewed close up. Fynart is the choice of photographers, framers, digital artists and photo labs who want to produce the highest quality products and charge a premium for their work. If you require more information on how to produce acrylic blocks please contact us.
This mounting film has a number of uses. Its primary function is as an adhesive for applying artwork and signage to windows and other clear surfaces. The first side of the mount film has a conventional permanent adhesive and this is intended to be stuck to the front or back of the artwork itself, depending on the application. The second side of the film has a special release liner that, when peeled back, exposes a micro-pyramid pattern adhesive. The texture of the adhesive means that when the artwork or graphic is hand-applied to the window, the image rests with only the points of the micro-pyramids touching the glass. This has two benefits: air can easily be pushed out, leaving no bubbles and the image can easily be repositioned as required. Our PRINT SQUEEGEE is perfect for this kind of work. When the artwork is to be removed it does so cleanly from the glass with no residue left behind.

the back of photographs, so that they can be stuck to wedding album pages and will still peel off if adjustment is required. When an album is completed to your satisfaction the prints can then be made permanent by pressing the images with our PRINT ROLLER, which ‘pops’ the micro-pyramids and gives a full adhesive coverage. Window-art is also ideal for making temporary signage for walls, doors, counter tops and even vehicles. When making signs the Window-art is applied to the back of the graphic and the graphic is usually laminated with a top film for durability. This method requires that the surface stuck to is clean and smooth.

SELF-WOUND MOUNT FILM STANDARD
We offer various self-wound mounting films, for use with laminators that feature an unwind shaft on the top. Selfwound mounting films have only one release liner, which is non-stick on both sides. As the roll is unwound the adhesive layer is exposed, so these films cannot be used for cut sheet applications. Additionally the full width of the roll will always be used as the film passes through the laminator, making self- wound films more suited to volume jobs, where a large number of boards or images are to be processed at the same time. Our STANDARD film is a general purpose film that is suitable for most NEW! kinds of artwork, from plain paper and posters to inkjet and photographic media. Standard self-wound film works well with all kinds of mounting substrates, from white display board and foam centred boards to MDF and rigid plastic boards.

Our ULTRA option of self-wound mount film has been developed for more challenging applications, where the standard product may struggle. Mounting substrates such as corex or aluminium are notoriously difficult to get a strong bond to and this film will provide a better result. Similarly, when trying to wrap graphics around the edge of thicker substrates, such as MDF, the extra adhesion that this film provides will do the job.

Most self-wound mount films have a clear central layer. Our new WHITE option has been introduced at the request of our customers, who want an adhesive layer that improves the optical brightness of prints that are on thinner or translucent media. This film is also very thick at 75 microns, which means it will absorb minor imperfections in cheaper mounting boards and lessen the ‘orange peel’ effect, which is seen when using inferior board stock.

SELF-WOUND MOUNT FILM ULTRA
SELF-WOUND MOUNT FILM WHITE
NEW!
This product is an unusual twist on the normal selfwound recipe. PERM/PEEL has two different kinds of adhesive built into one film. As the roll unwinds it exposes a permanent adhesive, which can be coated to the back of your artwork or onto a board. When the second layer is exposed it is a lower tack adhesive. This film is suitable for coating graphics that can be stuck to rigid plastic or expanded foam PVC boards. The graphic can be removed later, allowing the board to be re-used, thus saving money. When coated onto the board itself, it creates a repositionable surface for the application of complex artwork that may need to be applied by hand and re-arranged.

PRESSURE SENSITITVE LAMINATES The Hot Press range of pressure-sensitive, or cold, laminates is designed for use with the JetMounterTM and other quality roller laminators. The films work well at room temperature and provide superior protection from abrasion, moisture and pollutants. All contain UV stabilisers and absorbers to inhibit fading and discolouration from sunlight.
SATIN MATT 50µ
The overall finish of this film is a soft and smooth sheen effect. This film is often used to laminate paper posters and prints, as its subtle finish closely mimics that of the printed piece. The satin finish reduces glare but doesn’t reduce contrast. Another popular use for Satin Matt is as a protective laminate for images in wedding albums; as the film is relatively thin it doesn’t add too much bulk to the album.

The purpose of the complete matt finish of this film is to eliminate reflections. Full Matt film is most often used where lighting is unpredictable and uncontrollable, such as exhibition halls and other public places. This film is very useful for creating a protective surface that doesn’t actually look laminated, as it is virtually undetectable to the naked eye. It also offers additional UV protection when used behind plain glass, yet is almost invisible.

ULTRA GLOSS 50µ
This film offers the highest level of gloss available and the finish is often compared to Cibachrome prints. With its incredibly smooth surface it delivers an almost mirror-like finish. The film is recommended for artwork where impact and vibrant colours are required. When mounting Ultra Gloss images a very high quality adhesive film and board type are highly recommended, such as SELF-WOUND MOUNT FILM WHITE in conjunction with composite aluminium board, such as DiBond.

FINE LINEN 90µ
This delicate, linen-textured laminate is the finest of the three fabric textures in our range. It is often specified by photographers wishing to impart a subtle yet decorative finish to their work. It is non-reflective and quite scuff resistant making it ideal for wall prints in the home or for display. It is also useful for disguising minor creases and cracks in prints and posters.

CANVASTEX 190µ
NEW!
A very heavy-gauge fabric-texture film that is reminiscent of real canvas. This brand new addition to our range has already proved a massive hit, with pre-launch test volunteers. Canvastex is a good alternative to either printing to, or indeed mounting on, real canvas. The use of less expensive media and less ink make this product a cost effective alternative to more expensive printable canvases. The protection of inkjet canvas by lamination is highly recommended, as it is very susceptible to damage. But this is usually only possible using a heat-vacuum method. Canvastex opens up many new opportunities for cold laminator users to capitalise on the trend for canvas-look prints. Canvastex is very durable and, like all laminates, easy to clean, making it ideal for work that is on show in public areas, such as hotels, restaurants, cafes and clubs. Canvastex creates the illusion that the image has been printed onto canvas but is much tougher and easier to maintain. Canvastex is well suited to photographic portraiture, landscapes and many kinds of artwork that simulate paintings, both traditional and modern.

NATURAL LEATHER 190µ
13
NEW!
In previous years we have offered a complete range of leather-look laminates, but sadly the finish of the base films went down in quality and we felt that they reflected badly on our reputation for only offering the very best. After extensive product development and testing we have been able to source a superior grade plastic and we are now able to re-introduce a leather finish to our range. The new NATURAL LEATHER is a medium grain texture and suits a wide variety of artwork. It can also be used to cover coloured papers to create a leatherlook covering for books and albums. When coated onto coloured mount boards it makes great leather mounts for picture surrounds. As leather is currently very popular for household furniture this is a great time to return a leather finish to our comprehensive list of finishes.

STEEL 90µ
This film was introduced in our last catalogue and is winning a very strong following. Its unique brushed steel finish looks good on both modern and traditional styles of artwork. The effect is technically known as a ‘florentine’ pattern. This pattern is common on gold and silver picture frame mouldings and when used together with our steel finish has a very harmonising effect. Steel can be used with modern images to create a contemporary feel, or traditional images to create a brush stroke effect.

SPECIALITY SELF-ADHESIVE FILMS
A rich black velvet look fabric with a self-adhesive backing. This product has many uses such as providing the perfect backing layer for chunky style acrylic blocks. By adding velour to the back of a finished block the product instantly looks more appealing and luxurious. Lots of companies are now entering the photo book and print folio market and our velour is proving popular as a liner for the inside covers of these trendy new products. A traditional use of black velour has been as a backing for decorative picture frames and this material works well for this application. Other framing applications include using velour as a liner for shadow box frames and to create velvet slips. Applying velour to cut and layered foam centred board creates perfect sunken mounts for displaying coins and medals.

CHALKBOARD LAMINATE
NEW!
These two products are primarily designed for the production of chalkboards. The self-adhesive backing can be hand rubbed onto your chosen substrate or processed through a laminator. The film itself is tough, thick and opaque. It comes in a choice of traditional green or black. The specially prepared top surface has a grainy texture and allows chalk to be applied and later removed with a wet cloth or sponge. Chalkboards are popular not only in the class room, but are very useful in kitchens, workshops, offices, children’s rooms and anywhere that constantly changing information needs to be seen. Small chalkboards as ornaments or wall decoration in the home are a great way to use up short lengths of moulding in the picture framing workshop.
EASY PEEL PROTECTION FILM
It is often the case that plastic surfaces, such as acrylic blocks and art screen type glazing, would benefit from a protective layer whilst being transported. Unfortunately the film that originally covers these products often has to be removed on completion to inspect the surface or artwork underneath. Easy peel protection film is a great solution for returning this protection to your finished work. In the case of chunky acrylic blocks and acrylic wall panels you can simply hand-rub the film onto the finished acrylic and trim away the excess. If you choose to run the acrylic back through your laminator only use minimal pressure. This film has a low-tack adhesive formulation that peels away from the finished work without leaving a residue.

ALTERNATIVE USE
SPECIALITY SELF-ADHESIVE FILMS
Black chalkboard film can be used as a backing for block mounted work on MDF. Not only does it look far superior to bare MDF but it eliminates the possibility of the block warping or bowing. When one side of thick MDF is sealed with adhesive and a print, the other side is left open to absorb moisture in the atmosphere. In extreme conditions this can cause the MDF to expand at the back giving a ‘banana effect’ to the board.

HOT GLASS VACUUM PRESSES Based on our unique and proven technology, the Hot Glass Vacuum Press, or quite simply ‘The Hot Press’ as it is fondly and almost universally known, sets the standard for excellence in all areas of heat mounting and lamination. Regarded by many as the ‘industry standard’ machine for picture framers, these machines are also commonly used by restorers and professional print finishers worldwide.
The HOT PRESS has been constantly evolving over the past twenty years and represents the most convenient and efficient way of hot mounting in the modern framing workshop. The Hot Press is capable of handling a wide range of presentation materials, from white display board, foam centred board and MDF to photographs, art prints, inkjet canvases and delicate fabrics. No great physical strength is required to operate the machine and all types of work can be processed with ease. Additionally the Hot Press can be filled with multiple projects, thus saving time and energy. The Hot Press will efficiently process 25mm thick MDF on one side of the bed, whilst simultaneously processing 1mm card on the other. The transparent top panel of the Hot Press allows work to be viewed throughout most standard dry mounting procedures.
The unique Hot Press heating system is widely acknowledged as the best press heating system in the world. By passing electricity across a special conductive coating on a sheet of toughened glass, a very even heat is created. This heat is monitored several times every second by a special sensor and can be controlled to within 2 ºc. The use of a glass platen, rather than a metal one, leads to fast warm- up times, from room temperature to working temperature and a very even distribution of heat across its surface. This eliminates the need for ‘press watching’ and increases productivity in the workshop. The adjustable temperature control allows all kinds of artwork to be dry mounted, even those that may be damaged by heat. The versatile temperature controller allows temperatures from 0 ºc to 115 ºc to be set on the machine. Cold operation of the Hot Press, by turning the temperature down, also means the machine can be used with wet adhesives for low-value jobs.

HOT GLASS VACUUM PRESSES
HEATING SYSTEM
16
TIMING SYSTEM
The Hot Press comes with a built-in programmable process timer, so a time can be set and the timer started, leaving the operator free to prepare the next job. When the timing cycle is completed the vacuum pump will switch off, the atmospheric pressure is returned to the press and the timer resets for the next project. This again saves time. When processing large volumes of work, the programmable timer can be set to the minimum time required for each batch of work, again maximising productivity. The timer has two different and distinct modes of operation. The AUTO setting allows for timed operation on repetitive jobs, whilst the MANUAL setting allows the flexibility to set the machine running whilst you do other work. In this mode it will keep running until you are free to return to the job.
PRESSURE SYSTEM
HOT GLASS VACUUM PRESSES
The Hot Press typically deliver 14lbs of pressure per square inch and this is enough to process any kind of project. In fact, the pressure may even need reducing for certain jobs. This can be done by use of our pressure control valve, which fine-tunes the pressure to your exact needs. Hot Presses are supplied with their own dedicated vacuum pump. These units require no oiling, but they will collect moisture from damp artwork and boards. This moisture is collected in a moisture trap bowl, which should be emptied periodically. The variable pressure control ensures the right pressure is set for each individual job and minimises even heavy creases and wrinkles, whilst ensuring that delicate items such as foam board and embossed prints are not crushed.

OTHER KEY FEATURES
The Hot Press comes in a choice of three sizes, to suit all business types and these are based around common board and graphics sizes. The rugged construction of the Hot Press offers both strength and durability. Its glass, steel and aluminium construction stop the press twisting for consistently good levels of vacuum. This rigidity means that you only need the simple set of rubber feet to support the machine stably. There is no need to adjust these feet or to balance the press with a spirit level, unlike other flimsier machines. We offer custom made press stands for each Hot Press model and these support the machine safely. Power for the dedicated vacuum pump is supplied directly from the press itself , which means there is no need for extra wiring and is fast to set up. The airline connections between the press and pump are simple push/pull fittings. Connecting the air line requires no tools and no specialist skills.
IS A PRESS RIGHT FOR ME? Hot Presses can be found in many different working environments such as: • • • • • • • •
Picture Framers Photographers Digital canvas printers Photo Laboratories Museums Art Restorers Graphic departments Educational Institutions
When it comes to safety the Hot Press is CE approved and features safety cut outs, which protect the machine and user from both power surges and short circuits. The lid of the Hot Press is supported by gas struts which means the opening and closing operation requires very little effort. The generous opening height of the lid also ensures good access to the working area so that work maybe accurately positioned on the working bed. The bed of the Hot Press is a heavy duty rubber diaphragm. This creates the pressure against the heated glass platen to sandwich the work in progress. The uniquely textured surface of our diaphragm allows air to move easily towards the air suction port, which removes the air from machine, so a vacuum may be formed. The easy to read vacuum gauge shows how much pressure is being applied and how long it takes to achieve the desired level of vacuum. Finally the Hot Press comes with a comprehensive training DVD, which is a great constant resource when learning new skills and all the capabilities of these very versatile machines.
Our custom built Press stands are constructed of heavy gauge steel and designed to hold your press safely and securely. Whilst some people choose to build their own press bench, our press stands can be modified, with a little ingenuity. By adding a thick MDF or similar sheet to the bracing cross members, a very handy shelf can be constructed. By attaching steel cups to the side bars, rolls can be supported on cross poles too.

DRY MOUNTING TISSUES
This premium grade dry mounting tissue is widely regarded as the industry standard for the permanent mounting of all types of flat artwork. It is especially popular among bespoke framers and photo processors due to its superb lay flat properties. Unimount Classic™ is a high grade adhesive on a porous, pH neutral tissue. The tissue itself has excellent breathability, which allows air to escape from the various layers of your work. Unimount Classic™ is suitable for mounting posters, prints, photographs, inkjets, pastels, charcoals, colour copies, maps, charts, blue prints and plans. Unimount Classic™ is compatible with a wide variety of substrates, including mount board, pulp boards and grey boards, foam centred boards, hardboard, MDF and of course, Hot Press’ own specialist mounting substrate, White Display Board. This high-quality, buffered, acid free, stable and safe adhesive tissue is made for mounting your most treasured giclee prints, posters, photographs, fine art, prints or clippings. It was first developed in conjunction with the British Library for paper restoration work, as tissue tape. It has undergone simulated age testing showing it to withstand 200 years ageing without degradation. Artsafe 200TM activation temperatures are purposefully very low, for extra safety on fragile items, with 70ºc to 75ºc being set as a standard working temperature. Further testing has shown that the tissue will activate as low as 60ºc if required. Artsafe 200TM tissue is much thinner than other tissues and is supplied on a special carrier release paper. To use Artsafe 200TM simply cut a piece of tissue to your chosen size and place it face down on your mounting board (archival recommended). Then Hot Press the assembly at full pressure and at the desired temperature for approximately 1 minute, before removing the board from the press and allowing it to thoroughly cool down. The carrier release paper can now be removed to expose the heat sensitive tissue. The second stage is to carefully place the artwork on the tissue and cover with clear silicone release film. Then re-press the assembly under heat and pressure for between 1 to 4 minutes, dependant on artwork size and board type.

BASIC DRY MOUNTING PROCEDURE Dry mounting is the process of bonding an image to a mounting substrate. The process is simple and takes only a few minutes, but there are a number of issues to be considered. For an in-depth understanding of dry mounting techniques, we invite you to attend one of our free training schools.
DRY MOUNTING TISSUES
In the meantime, the important fundamentals of dry mounting are summarised below.
21
Firstly, consider the artwork you wish to mount. How will it react to heat? Does it require pre–drying to remove excess moisture? Does it require pre–pressing to remove any creases? Is the artwork clean and free from dust / dirt / stickers or tape? Is the artwork porous? Does it have an image that may shift (as in the case of pastels)? All these points should be considered before proceeding. With a little experience they will become second nature. Secondly, determine what type of substrate is compatible with your artwork. What is the optimum thickness? Is quality or price your primary objective? Will the substrate need to be pre–dried? Would a smooth substrate benefit the artwork? Does the substrate need to be coloured or textured? Is it porous? Based on these conclusions, identify the best adhesive for this combination of artwork and substrate. Please consult individual product descriptions, recommendations and charts to arrive at the best match - or call us for more technical help. * See pages 21 - 23 for more information

HEAT ACTIVATED MOUTING FILMS
NEW!
NEW!
As well as our superb range of dry mounting tissues, Hot Press offer a complete range of heat activated mounting films for your more challenging or specialist jobs. By choosing the right combination of adhesive and mounting board the possibilities are virtually unlimted. This is the most aggressive hot adhesive in our range and is the perfect partner to Unimount Classic™ tissue. Where Unimount Classic™ is good for most jobs, Dry Mount Film Clear steps in when tougher challenges arise. The product itself is formed from a clear central carrier film, which is coated on both sides with a very strong, heat activated adhesive. Each adhesive layer is then protected by a grid-marked carrier paper. The two separate release liners mean that this adhesive can be rolled out on the work bench and simply cut to the correct size for each mounting job. When the adhesive is exposed at room temperature it has a low level of tackiness. This allows the film to be positioned or tacked onto either your artwork or mounting board as desired. Dry Mount Film Clear is especially recommended for woods, MDF, plastics, textured art papers, canvases and other fabrics. This adhesive will bond well to both highly textured and very smooth surfaces. The main difference between dry mount tissues and heat activated films is that films do not ‘breathe’. Therefore we recommend that this film is pierced with a piercing tool prior to use.

DRY MOUNT FILM - WHITE
Similar in almost every respect to Dry Mount Film Clear, the white variant of this film has a thicker high-white central layer. This makes it very conformable on uneven surfaces and has a very high degree of grab on fabrics. Because the white central layer reflects light it has the effect of brightening translucent items, such as technical plans and blueprints. Dry Mount Film White was traditionally used with plain beige canvas, for canvas bonding high key or bridal images. Again we recommend that this film is pierced with a piercing tool prior to use.

HOW TO PIERCE DRY MOUNT FILMS We are unable to pre pierce dry mount films during the manufacturing process, as they have a peel off liner on both sides.
Piercing through either of the liner papers
would lead to tiny specks of paper being embedded in the film itself and create a poor finish. To pierce dry mount films yourself we recommend that you cut a piece to the desired size and place it on a cutting mat. Then peel off one release paper, to expose the bare adhesive layer. Now pierce with a piercing tool, making sure to cover the whole area with holes at a minimum of less than 1cm apart. You cannot really pierce too much and more holes are better than fewer. Now apply the pierced film to your artwork or board as required. The tiny pieces of plastic that are punched out will embed in the bottom paper layer, which is discarded later.

ACID FREE MOUNT FILM
Acid Free Mount Film is a pure film adhesive. The acid free adhesive melts as it is heated up and bonds as it cools and solidifies. It is widely believed that in most instances, this bond can be reversed by re-heating the adhesive, though we would caution against this and offer no guarantee of success. Acid Free Mount Film also conforms well to uneven surfaces such as watercolour paper and fabrics, making it a versatile adhesive for most types of artwork and substrates.

This new film is something a little different and is actually based on our pressure-sensitive transfer films. Transfer mount films have no central carrier layer. Without the central layer the film simply transfers to what it touches. Transfer films are less expensive, as they only contain one layer of adhesive and no carrier. For those who see cost savings as the highest factor on their priority list, transfer films are an ideal solution. Heat transfer film is really designed to be passed through a heated roller laminator and works well with all kinds of mounting substrates, from white display board and foam centred boards to MDF and hardboard. Once coated to a board it offers a low tack surface for artwork to be applied and then re-processed.

HOW TO USE HEAT ACTIVATED MOUNTING TISSUES AND FILMS • •
• • • • •
Set your press for the correct temperature (usually 90 ºC) and allow it to warm up Once the press has warmed up, pre-press your substrate or artwork if required. This process requires placing the material in the press and pressing it for two or three minutes. Remember to let it cool down again after the drying process has been completed Cut the adhesive to size (normally 5mm (1/4”) bigger than the artwork) Cut the substrate to size (normally 25mm (1”) bigger than the artwork) Make sure you have silicone release film or paper available to cover any exposed adhesive areas If you are going to use the timer, now is the time to set it. Don’t set it when your project is already in the press. Now you can assemble your project!

ASK THE EXPERTS... Step 2.
DRY MOUNTING If you are working with a hard or soft bed press, or if the project needs to be very precisely positioned, it may be necessary to tack the assembly together. Tacking is used to keep the components of an assembled project together and stop them from moving around in relation to each other. Tacking may be performed in a variety of ways. SPRAYS – If you must use spray adhesive for tacking, spray a fine short burst onto the substrate and position the tissue on top. Remember, your objective is to position the tissue, not actually bond it, so go easy on the spray. Then spray the top of the tissue and position the artwork. NOTE: We do not recommend spray adhesives for mounting artwork. GLUE STICKS – The same procedure may be performed with glue sticks, but remember, only use a dab!
Trimming the excess tissue away is common when (1) a project is to be displayed without a frame, or (2) when a picture will sit in the middle of a board with other information on it or (3) any other situation that would expose the tissue to the viewer. Having tacked your tissue onto the top third of the artwork, the tissue should next be tacked onto the bottom third of the board as shown in Step 2. Step 3.
TAPE – Assuming the board is the largest component and the artwork is the smallest, you can place a piece of masking tape at the edge of the print so it also covers the tissue and board.
All the methods mentioned previously are ‘make do’ ideas that do work. However, anyone tacking on a regular basis should really consider the use of a tacking iron. A tacking iron is a small spot heater and is used as shown below. Step 1.
Only one tack should be used on each surface, so that all the components, though secured to each other, are still free to float across each other. This method of tacking is often referred to as an “S” or “Z “ tack, because when viewed from the side the tissue forms an “S” or “Z” between the artwork and board. See Step 3. NOTE: Tacking in more than one place on the artwork or substrate will lead to tension in the tissue and cause creasing.
First, tack the tissue to the back of the artwork. Place a small piece of silicone release paper in between the tissue and the iron head to prevent the iron from becoming covered in glue. Tack the tissue onto the top third of the artwork as shown in Step 1. You can then trim away any excess tissue around the print before tacking the print into position on the board.

PROCESSING
The graph above provides suggested processing times for basic dry mounting procedures. Times shown are in minutes. The graph should only be used as a guide, as processing times will vary from press to press and are dependant on the specific project. If in doubt, always ask for advice or run a test. SPECIAL NOTES – This time guide assumes that you are working with artwork that is porous and that you are using Unimount Classic™ dry mount tissue. For non-porous artwork such as R.C. photographs, add 25% more time. The guide assumes that when working with Foam Centred Board, you will be using a reduced pressure; again the time recommendations are based on this assumption.
DRY MOUNTING
When the time and temperature have been determined, you should place the assembled job in the press. After checking that everything is clean and lined up properly, processing should be started straight away. When using a Hot Glass Press it is possible to view the work as it is processed. When processing has been completed, remove the finished job from the press and leave it to cool on a flat surface. Your dry mount is now complete!

HEATSEAL LAMINATES Our range of heat activated lamination films, or heatseals as they are commonly known, are widely regarded as the industry standard for heated press print finishing. All our heatseal films are made in our own factory in Bristol, UK and contain UV inhibitors in both the film and adhesive. This stops the films from turning yellow or becoming brittle over time. This attention to detail has the beneficial side effect of increasing the fade resistance of the artwork underneath. Heatseal films are incredibly durable, easy to keep clean and come in a variety of popular finishes.
This is our most popular heatseal laminate. This film offers a unique finish that conforms to the surface it is pressed against (under heat and vacuum). The normal result is a very rich lustre finish, which is achieved by pressing the film against the surface of the foam blanket in the Hot Press. This normal finish is very reminiscent of the lustre texture found on photographic paper. To change the finished texture, the artwork can be repressed against other textured or smooth surfaces to give an almost limitless choice of textures, from a single roll of film. This film can also used as a glossy top coating when prints are bonded to canvas, or printed inkjet canvases are laminated.

SATIN MATT 50µ
The overall finish of this film, once processed, is a stippled sheen effect. This film is often used to laminate posters and prints, as its subtle finish closely mimics that of the printed piece. The satin sheen finish reduces glare, but does not reduce contrast, as the film is relatively thin. This film can also used as a satin top coating when prints are bonded to canvas, or printed inkjet canvases are laminated.

FULL MATT 75µ
This film is characterised by a full matt finish that completely eliminates reflections. It offers additional UV protection when used behind glass, but is almost invisible. Full matt film is most often used where lighting is unpredictable and uncontrollable, such as exhibition halls and other public areas. Additional heat applied during processing will give the matt film a heavily textured and very scuff resistant surface. This film can also used as a matt top coating when prints are bonded to canvas, or printed inkjet canvases are laminated.

COARSE LINEN 90µ
This film displays a mid-gauge fabric texture resembling rough cotton or hessian. It is often used on larger format artwork where a finer finish may be lost. The rougher gauge of this film is capable of hiding large imperfections in prints and posters. Like most textured heatseals it is quite scuff resistant.

ASK THE EXPERTS... HOW TO LAMINATE USING HEATSEAL LAMINATES Step 1 – Switch on your press and set it to 90°C. While the press warms up, set your timer. More information on processing times for different films is shown in the table on the opposite page. Make sure you have a sheet of silicone release film in the base of the press and a sheet of vacufoam or foam plastic (dependant on machine type) over the silicone release film. Step 2 – Measure the image to be laminated and cut a piece of heatseal film that is 15mm (1/2”) larger than the image all the way round. For a 406mm x 508mm (16” x 20”) image, the film should be cut to 432mm x 533mm (17” x 21”). Step 3 – Peel back the release liner of the heatseal film to expose about 25mm (1”) of adhesive and firmly crease back the release liner. Place your artwork (face up) on a clean, flat and cool surface and position the film at the edge of the artwork. Move the film around until it completely covers the artwork. The creased release liner will hold the exposed adhesive away from the artwork while you position it. When you are satisfied with the positioning, press the leading edge of exposed film down onto the artwork using very light pressure. Then slowly peel back the release paper, until the entire image is covered by the film. Smooth out any wrinkles, lifting and repositioning the film from the corners if necessary. Step 4 – Now trim off most of the waste film. Be careful not to trim too close to the image, as the film may shift. Take the heatseal assembly and place it in your press, under a sheet of vacufoam or foam plastic and process it according to the table on the opposite page. Step 5 – When all the air has escaped from your heatseal assembly and the adhesive has been activated, remove the artwork from the press and allow it to cool thoroughly. Step 6 – Any remaining film around the edge of the image should now be trimmed away with a straight edge and craft knife or scalpel.
Foam Blanket Laminating Film Print Silicone Release From top to bottom the assembly should be set up as shown here
Lamination guards artwork against finger marks, moisture, UV light, smudging, abrasion, ozone exposure, cigarette smoke and other airborne pollutants. Laminates also protect artwork from damage due to handling by rolling or in shipping. Lamination can also deepen and brighten the colours of your artwork as well as reduce glare under challenging lighting conditions. Laminated images are less prone to showing dirt, but are also easier to clean, with most non-abrasive household cleaning products.

*25.4mm = 1 inch Timings based on working temperature of 90oC The times shown above are in minutes and are based on artwork that is porous i.e. posters and prints. If your artwork is non-porous then it is advisable to increase these times. The operating temperature is another key variable. As more heat is used, processing times decrease. Processing times increase with lower temperature settings. It is common for Fine and Coarse linen to be processed at lower temperatures (80°C) to maintain the texture of the weave pattern; the same applies to Satin Matt and Matt, where a smooth finish is required. Due to its thickness and strong weave pattern, Canvastex is often processed at 110°C to decrease the processing time. Similarly Gloss (Lustre), Satin Matt and Matt are often processed at 100°C to obtain a heavy texture to their surface. If you are laminating artwork that has already been mounted to a board, the thickness, moisture content and porosity of the board will have an effect on processing times.
LAMINATE OR GLAZE?
HEATSEAL LAMINATES
Laminating films are more economical when compared to speciality (or even plain) glass, yet add a perceived value to the finished artwork that means more profit for the image maker. Due to the innate qualities of laminating film, unlike glass, it cannot be broken. Therefore where safety is a factor, especially in shopping centres, airports, schools, retirement homes, children’s rooms, hospitals and other public places, lamination is superior to glass. Internet galleries are booming and it is no coincidence that artwork without glass, such as canvases, block mounts and acrylic images are very popular. This is because they can be shipped without the fear of broken glass.

PLEASE NOTE
NEW It is always advisable to pre-treat a new sheet SIZE
of foam before using it on any work. All foam contains fire retardants and these activate when the foam is initially heated. New foam needs to be heat conditioned in the press under pressure for a period of time to cook it into a flat shape. Failure to condition your foam can lead to invisible memory marks being embedded into the foam’s surface. These can then show up on subsequent jobs as ghost marks. If you would like more information on preventing this please feel free to contact us.

CANVAS Though inkjet canvas media has become very popular in the last few years for producing artwork that resembles paintings, many people still prefer the look and feel of an image that has been bonded to real canvas. These canvases are much heavier and have much bigger weave patterns than inkjet canvas media, leading to images with lots of impact. Canvas bonding is a heat process and requires a Hot Press. PLAIN MOUNTING CANVAS
A heavy duty beige cotton based fabric used as the substrate for canvas bonded photographs and prints. This material should be used in conjunction with either clear or white dry mount film and is suitable for stretching images around stretcher frames. Three styles are available, each with its own unique appearance. The MODERN variant offers a very regular weave structure that is quite open and imparts a deep line pattern. The COARSE variant is more irregular in its weave pattern, with a definite slub to the threads, producing a very heavy impression. The TRADITIONAL variant also has a slub pattern, but with a closed weave. This version imparts a softer, though still distinct impression.

ASK THE EXPERTS... THE CANVAS BONDING PROCESS FOR PAPER PRINTS Here is a simple step by step guide to using our canvases to make a canvas bonded print from a simple paper poster.
This will happen when the water has completely soaked into the image. Generally speaking, thicker prints and larger prints take longer to process. The whole procedure will require anywhere from around 3 minutes (for small thin images) up to an hour (for large thick prints that have been lightly crumpled). NOTE: Lightly crumpling the print before soaking will break the paper fibres and speed up the process, but do not overdo this.
STEP 1 – Set the press temperature to 90 °C. While it warms up, set the timer for 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure you place a sheet of silicone release film in the base of the press and a sheet of vacufoam over the silicone release film.
STEP 8 – While your print is soaking, prepare a work area with a smooth shiny surface. The area should be larger than your whole assembly. Glass, Perspex, Melamine and Acrylic are all good working surfaces to use.
STEP 2 – Measure the image to be bonded and cut a piece of heatseal film that is 76mm (3”) larger than the image all the way round. For example, with a 406 x 508mm (16” x 20”) image, the film should be cut to 559 x 660mm (22” x 26”). Our Gloss Lustre, Satin Matt or Full Matt heatseal films may be used for this process.
STEP 9 – When your print is completely soaked, lay it on the smooth work area, picture face up, wet paper side down. Smooth the image onto the surface to remove any air, then lift a corner of the film. As the back side of the wet print grips the smooth surface, you should find the picture is now starting to delaminate. Place your thumb on the delaminated corner and peel the image and film back until it has completely delaminated from the paper backing.
STEP 3 – Cut a piece of coated canvas to the same dimensions as the heatseal film. STEP 4 – Peel back the release liner of the film to expose about 102mm (4”) of adhesive. The film should be face down with the adhesive face up. Line up your image so it is centred within the film (image faced down), then lightly tack down the leading edge of the image to the adhesive. Peel back more release film until the entire image is in contact with the adhesive. This should leave you with 76mm (3”) of film still attached to the release paper. Allow the free release paper to fall back and cover the back of the image and exposed edges of adhesive, smoothing as you go. STEP 5 – You now have a ‘heatseal envelope’ with the image trapped between the film and its release liner. Place the envelope into your press, with the film side facing up and under a sheet of vacufoam. Process this under vacuum for 5 to 10 minutes at 90°C.
STEP 10 – Before proceeding further, allow your delaminated image to dry naturally. Do not force dry it with heat. When the image has dried, peel back 100mm (4”) of the release paper on your coated canvas and line up your image squarely. Remove more release paper about 50mm (2”) at a time. As you do this, smooth your image onto the exposed adhesive of the canvas, avoiding air bubbles and wrinkles as you go. When this process is complete, trim off 6mm (¼”) to 13mm (½”) all around the edge of the assembly and place it back in your press for 2 to 5 minutes. The assembly should be placed on top of the foam, with the image face down and the back of the canvas facing up. Process this under vacuum for 5 to 10 minutes at 90°C. This completes the process and if desired the finished canvas can be stretched on to a frame.
STEP 6 – When all the air has escaped and the adhesive has activated, remove the envelope from the press. Allow the envelope to cool, then remove the silicone release paper from the back.
CANVAS
STEP 7 – Completely immerse the heatsealed image in a bath of room-temperature water and soak it until the back of the image turns a uniform grey...

PIERCING TOOL
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
These precision engineered rollers are specially designed to perforate heat activated mount films and PVC heatseal films, to allow air to pass through them during processing in a Hot Press. Though most of our films now come pre-pierced as standard, both clear and white drymount film require hand perforation, as does our very thick canvastex heatseal. The piercing tool comes in two widths and has hundreds of very sharp spikes that are used to create the pin sized holes required for air to escape during the mounting and laminating process.

OLFA KNIVES
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
The original and still the best ‘snap-off blade’ cutters in the world. OLFATM invented this system in 1956 and it has been widely copied in recent years and often very badly. We offer both the standard and heavy duty knives. The standard is the most popular cutter in the entire OLFATM range. It is comfortable in the hand, pocket sized, features a blade snapping clip and most importantly cuts straight and evenly every time. The heavy-duty knife is the cutter of choice for many mounting and laminating professionals. With its rubber grip and screw tightening blade lock, this knife is perfect for cutting all kinds of boards, from White Display Board and Foam Centred Board to Foamex and even thinner MDF panels. Replacement blades are fast and easy to fit, but unlike inferior copy blades they snap off accurately and cleanly. The snap-off blade system from OLFATM is far superior to single blade utility knife systems.

THE BIG PURPLE RULER
A superbly designed aluminium cutting edge and safety ruler. It features a special non slip, wide foam pad on the base that prevents slippage and keeps the trim line straight and true. This special pad will not mark artwork in the same way that rubber grips often do. Embedded in the cutting edge of the ruler is a hardened steel rod. This is what your cutting blade runs against, so you won’t cut into the aluminium itself, creating gouges in your ruler. A very high safety guard rail prevents the cutting blade from riding up onto fingers and hands and behind this is a generous flat face for hand clamping the ruler firmly in place.

We don’t live in a perfect world, but if we did then our print finishing workshops would conform to these basic rules. Dust and dirt would be easy to spot and easy to clean away, by having working surfaces covered with good quality cutting mats. We would have good lighting to help us align and inspect our work more thoroughly. We would have a still atmosphere that stops airborne dirt infecting our work. And finally, we would have a warm and dry environment to store our materials and keep them in good condition.

SUBSTRATES Hot Press adhesives will adhere to many kinds of boards. For the best dry mounting results, however, we recommend using boards that have been developed with dry mounting in mind. Hot Press specialise in over- sized boards and popular cut sizes.
WHITE DISPLAY BOARD
This popular board has won a multitude of fans in recent years. White Display Board is a 2000 micron board with a very dense core. Unlike many mount boards - which are softer and more open structured - White Display Board does not absorb a lot of moisture, additionally the core is smoother than ordinary pulp boards, reducing the effect of orange peel on glossy artwork. The clay-coated, high white board liners act as a good key for adhesives and also help repel moisture. White Display Board is also porous, which is an added advantage when using a vacuum press. As with all Hot Press boards, White Display Board is a pH neutral product, priced competitively for such a specialised product. A 1250 micron version is also available.

STIKIBOARDTM SELF-ADHESIVE BOARD
As its name implies, this 2000 micron board has a strong and permanent, pressure sensitive adhesive coating. Unlike many self adhesive boards, that use a soft mountboard base, Stickiboard uses our very tough White Display Board as its base. Additionally, to avoid warping, the back of the board is coated with a polypropylene balancing film. StikiboardTM can be used for mounting images by hand, with the aid of a Hot Press SMOOTHING PAD or PRINT ROLLER, but for best performance we suggest that this board be used in conjunction with a JetMounter™ laminator. A laminator will help assure a strong bond and smooth finish, even on photographs and other smooth backed artwork. Our new JetMounter™ 34” laminator is perfect for coating even full sized boards. A thinner 1300 micron version is also available, where stiffness, but not thickness are required.

EASYMOUNTTM DRY MOUNT CARD
This is a heat activated board that really works! EasymountTM Dry Mount Card has the same base board and advantages as White Display Board, with the addition of a dry adhesive coating. This special coating is based on our micro pyramid technology, which ensures air can move across the surface of the board and escape, before a solid bond is produced. The coating works best at 90ºC, the same as all other Hot Press heat activated products. At this temperature your work has time to breathe, which helps prevent air becoming trapped beneath your artwork.

RIGID PLASTIC STIFFENER
NEW!
This is a new product to our range and has a number of uses. To describe it in layman’s terms it is a stiff, white backing material with an adhesive that is suitable for use with JetmounterTM laminators. It can be used to stiffen prints that are to be framed, without adding undue thickness to the print. Rigid Plastic Stiffener is opaque, meaning that light will not pass through it. This makes it particularly suitable for producing rollable pop-up or pull-up displays, especially when used in conjunction with our Crystaltex laminate.

FOAM CENTERED BOARD
Foam centred board is an old favourite and has many uses. For high gloss artwork, it offers a smooth surface that helps prevent ‘orange peel’. Where weight is a consideration, we recommend our Foam Centred Board, as it is light weight, yet dimensionally stable. Our standard version is 5mm thick and is faced with high quality clay coated liners, for a good adhesive key. Unlike some foam centred boards, the dense core of this board is suitable for processing in a Hot Press.

With so many choices of board or ‘substrate’ available, it is easy to get confused about which board is best. The answer to this dilemma is often complicated and a lot of misinformation is spread around, by well intentioned, if ill-informed people. Your choice of board depends on many factors, such as... • • • • • • • • • •
COST WEIGHT SMOOTHNESS DENSITY CUT QUALITY COLOUR THICKNESS POROSITY RIGIDITY SIZE
Here at Hot Press we keep a close eye on trends within the board market and we constantly test new products as they come along. With our vast experience of display and presentation techniques we are able to advise our customers of the ideal products to use and where to buy them from. So if you need to know which board is best for a certain job, or where to source the right board at the right price. Please feel free to contact us on: Tel: +44 (0)117 958 6500 Email:

MAGNETIC GRAPHIC SYSTEMS Our new range of magnetic products are the latest trend in visual communications. They can be combined to create innovative changeable graphic environments or simply used as individual components in a wide range of display applications, including trade show stands, interactive showrooms and even for hanging pictures in art galleries. MAGNET RECEPTIVE PRIMER PAINT
NEW!
This new and very special latex primer paint transforms almost any flat facade into a metalized and magnetic receptive surface. It is most commonly used as a priming coat on walls, that are then over painted to match the rest of the surroundings. When this is done you have an ‘active wall’ where objects can be displayed, added, moved and changed at will. Two main uses that are proving very popular are moulding display walls in framing shops and activity walls within schools and hospitals etc. In the case of frame shops, mouldings can be displayed similarly to on a nyloop panel. The differences are, a magnetic strip is fixed to the back of each chevron, rather than Velcro. The look is cleaner and brighter than fabric panels and mouldings can be arranged and moved more easily. Picture frames can be hung too, using multiple lengths of magnetic strip. In the case of schools and hospitals, the wall can be painted with drawings, patterns or colours etc to create a play surface that children can stick magnetic objects to. A small strip of magnetic tape, added to the bottom of some colourful plastic cars, has recently been used in a school as a progress chart – where each child’s car moves along a painted race track, every time they excel in class. This type of wall display is washable, which is important in public places.

MAGNETIC SHEETING
NEW!
This wide format magnetic sheeting has a white face and a magnetised rear. By mounting laminated artwork or graphics to the front face, the artwork can be displayed on any magnetic receptive surface, such as ‘active walls’, car, vans and machinery. Vehicle graphics for temporary or promotional use often use this style of sheeting, as it is fast to apply and remove from the vehicle. Magnetic sheeting is also good for making fridge magnets and magnetic photo gifts. It can be easily cut with a craft knife to form complex shapes if required.

EDGE TO EDGE MAGNETIC STRIP
MAGNETIC ‘A TO B’ STRIP
These more conventional 13mm wide magnetic strips are often used as a pair, like hook and loop Velcro. They have a self adhesive face and the reverse faces are of different polarities. When sticking graphics or artwork to MAGNETIC RECEPTIVE panels, such as ‘active walls’, vehicles, machinery or other metal objects, either tape A or tape B may be used.

PLAQUE DECOR® EDGE FINISHING SYSTEM PlaqDecor® is a profitable way to create stunning visual presentations from artwork of almost any kind. This imaginative process is a less expensive alternative to framing, but with an elegant, yet understated visual impact. Virtually anything that can be framed is suitable for PlaqDecor® such as photographs, prints, posters, drawings, certificates. Unusual types of art and novel visual subjects are perfect for PlaqDecor®, for example textured items such as leaves and flowers. PLAQUE DECOR® EDGE FINISHING SYSTEM
NEW!
This economical edge finishing system for plaques and block mounts is ideal for producing small to medium volumes of plaques. The Plaque Decor® system consists of two separate machines and creating a PlaqDecor® block is a three step process. Firstly your artwork is dry mounted to a 9mm MDF block and laminated with a heatseal film. Then the block is passed through the shaper station and finally edged by the foiler station.

Key Hole Router
NEW!
The foiler station is a free-standing machine. It houses a hot foil application wheel and a roll of your chosen edge foil. Simply let the foiler heat up and then pass your bevelled panel along the feed table by hand. As the panel crosses the heated application wheel the foil will be transferred to the edge of the panel.
KEY HOLE ROUTER
NEW!
For the ultimate finish on a Plaque Decor® panel or any block mounted image, this new key hole router station is just the thing. Keyholes in block mounts allow them to be fitted flush to the wall, for a much better look and safer presentation.
NEW!
The shaper station is a bench-mounted cutting unit that is used to apply a 45 degree bevel to the top edge of an MDF or tempered hardboard panel. The cutting head is simply switched on and the plaque is passed through the cutter by hand, along the feed table. This creates the bevel and smoothes the edge of the mounted and laminated work on the face.
