Sooner or later you may join the millions of people who remodel their homes each year. Perhaps it’s at that moment when you realize that avocado green and harvest gold are no longer the “in” colors for today’s trendy kitchens. Or maybe you have an epiphany one day as you stand in line to use your own bathroom. Whatever the motivation, the thought crosses your mind: Maybe it’s time to start a home remodel. The reasons for home remodeling are as varied as the projects we undertake.

You may want to improve home efficiency and hire a remodeler for green home remodeling. Having trees means sooner or later you will need tree services of some type including tree or stump removal, trimming, or even consultation with a certified arborist concerning services for diseased or dying trees. Get at least 3 written estimates detailing work specifications.

Now is a good time to rid your home of the clutter and paperwork you have accumulated over the past year. When it comes to reviewing your financial records, how do you know what to discard & what to keep? Here are a few tips from your BBB and Shredders, Inc: • Canceled checks: Those with no long-term significance for tax or other purposes probably can be destroyed after about a year. But canceled checks that support your tax returns, such as charitable contributions or tax payments, probably should be held for at least seven years - long enough to cover the six-year tax assessment period that starts when you file your tax return for the year the check was written. And, Keep indefinitely (for other tax reasons) any canceled checks and related receipts or document for a home purchase or sale, renovations or other improvements to property you own, and nondeductible contributions to an Individual Retirement Account. • Deposit, ATM, credit card and debit card receipts: Save them until the transaction appears on your statement and you have verified that the information is accurate. • Credit Card & bank account statements: Save those with no tax or other long-term significance for about a year, but save the rest for up to seven years. If you get a detailed annual statement, keep that and discard the corresponding monthly statements. Be sure to mark closed deposit accounts as such, so your heirs do not waste time wondering what happened to the money. • Credit card contracts & other loan agreements: Keep for as long as the account is active, in case you have a dispute with your lender over the terms of your contract. • Documentation of your purchase or sale of stocks, bonds and other investments: Retain these while you own the investment and then seven years after that. To avoid becoming a victim of identity theft, be sure to shred any document that contains a Social Security number, bank account number or other personal information (especially financial information), before tossing. THINGS TO KNOW BBB® & Summit Concrete & Construction offer tips on choosing a concrete contractor. Finding and hiring the right contractor is a key part of a successful concrete project. You want a professional who is dependable, honest and, most of all, competent. Here is some information from BBB & Summit Concrete: Get Multiple Estimates-Get at least three written estimates.
Understand that the lowest estimate is not always the best estimate. Ask what procedure is used when pouring and compare techniqes and expansion control joist precedures. Make sure your estimates are comparable. Note which contractors show up on time and demonstrate experience, knowledge, and professionalism. Select Insured Concrete Contractors-Ensure that the contractor you select carries both liability and workmen’s compensation insurance. Personally verify that both are up to date. Check References-Get at least three references for your contractor and call them. The contractor will likely give you references who had positive experiences, so be sure to ask them specific questions about workmanship that are important to you. Sign a Written Contract-The contract should clearly spell out all the steps the contractor will take from beginning to end of your job, what supplies are included, the payment schedule and the time line for the project.
If you want strong, good quality concrete that will withstand the test of time, experts would agree to use these requirements: Strength-The minimum recommended strength for exterior slabs is 3,000 psi (pounds per square inch). However, 4,000 psi driveways are even better. Re-enforcement is a key element to strong slabs according to engineers and geo-technicians. Weather-Summit Concrete adjusts the mix to accomodate all weather, using accelerants for colder days and retardants for hotter days. First Delivery-Try to ensure your job is the first delivery of the truck load and avoid being the last delivery of the day. This will reduce the probability that additional water is added to the mix that may alter the ratio of ingredients that make up the batch result in weaker bonds. Finish Type-For concrete driveways and sidewalks, go for the more slip resistant broom/brush textured finish. Finishing Techniques-Ensure that the concrete finishing is trowel finished by hand or machine. Curing Techniques-Insist on natural wet moist curing or plastic curing. Choose the moist cure or plastic cure (tightly covering the slab with high-quality plastic for several days) for best results. The hydration process will typically last 30 days. Expansion Control Joints-Concrete shrinks as it cures therefore expansion control joints are highly recommended. The depth of these joints should be 1/4th the total thickness of the slab. So for example, a four inch think concrete sidewalk should have one inch deep control joints.

The Success of Your Remodeling Project Depends on Choosing the Right Contractor
Every year the Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern Oklahoma processes thousands of complaints from homeowners who had a bad experience with a remodeling project. In many of those situations, the contractor closed its doors and left town, leaving the homeowner with a house in shambles and a lot less money in their bank account. The SBA estimates that 96% of home improvement companies go out of business in their first five years. If the contractor is gone, what happens to the warranty? Who will make any necessary repairs? Those questions don’t have to be asked if you choose a contractor with an established reputation and a proven track record of complaint resolution. You can check with Better Business Bureau® for this information. Before selecting a remodeling contractor, you should carefully plan your project from start to finish. For example, if your project involves a room addition: determine exactly what your needs are, how the room is to be used, and what you want the completed job to look like. It is a good idea to coordinate your color schemes and draw a simple floor plan using miniature tables and chairs to lay out the room arrangement. Be specific in explaining to the contractor what you want, and be sure to approve any architectural plans that are involved in the remodeling job before the contractor begins the work. To obtain financing for your home improvement project you may want to consider: a personal or bank loan, a home equity loan, a loan from your credit union or insurance company, or a loan from a savings and loan institution. While your contractor may be able to assist you in securing the needed financing, it is important that you investigate the various sources of funding and compare the amounts, interest rates, terms, and tax considerations. If you cannot pay for a home improvement project without a loan, it is a wise idea to put a clause in your contract with the remodeler stating that the agreement is valid only if financing is obtained. Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans for home improvements are available through certain banks and other lending institutions. However, FHA requires that the lender approve any contractor associated with the loan request and will not guarantee the work of the contractor if not approved. Be wary of any contractor who tells you they have been approved or endorsed by the FHA. If your home improvement project results from an accident or natural disaster that is covered by insurance, check with your insurance company to determine the extent of coverage before signing a contract to have the damages repaired. Greg Wolter, President of the award-winning Community Builders, suggests that you ask the potential contractor for documents establishing financial stability. These can be letters from suppliers proving that the company can easily obtain the supplies that are needed. Most importantly, you should request a certificate of liability insurance, contractors should carry at least $500,000, but preferably $1,000,000 or more of coverage. If the contractor does not have liability coverage, you may be responsible for any damages or injuries caused by the contractor. Building codes are established by most cities, towns, and counties and may vary considerably from one jurisdiction to another. Your contract should state that the work is performed in accordance with all applicable building codes and zoning regulations in the area where you reside. A building permit is generally required when performing structural work or when a home’s basic living area is changed. Separate permits for electrical, heating, or plumbing work are required in some cases. Check with your local department of licensing and permits when starting a job to learn if a building or work permit is required. If the project does, in fact, require a building permit the contractor should apply for it in his or her name. Thus, if the contractor’s work does not pass inspection, you cannot be held financially responsible for any corrections that must be made. Terms regarding the application of any permits should be outlined in the written contract. When a government agency issues a permit for home improvement work it will inspect the work when it has reached a certain stage to make sure it complies with various codes and regulations. It is the responsibility of the contractor to arrange for these inspections. BBB® Home Remodeling Guide

Make sure the written contract includes: the contractor’s full name, address, telephone number, and professional license number. Never sign a partial or blank contract. You should make every attempt to pay a minimal or no down payment for supplies or services, especially if you have not done business with a contractor in the past. You should not make any payments for incomplete work. Schedule payments at weekly or monthly intervals or after completion of each phase of the project. All of these terms should be spelled out in the contract and clearly understood by both you and the contractor. Read every contract clause carefully and ask any questions you may have before signing. Retain a copy of the contract once it is signed, and file it in your records. •When you sign a home improvement contract in your home and in the presence of a contractor or contractor’s representative, you have three business days in which to change your mind and cancel the contract. The contractor is required to explain your cancellation rights and provide you with any cancellation forms. If you cancel, it is recommended that a notice of cancellation be sent to the contractor by certified mail with a return receipt request. Never make final payment or sign an affidavit of final release until you are satisfied with the work completed and know that all subcontractors and suppliers have been paid. •Any warranty offered on products by the contractor should be in writing and scrutinized carefully. Make certain you understand all the terms and conditions including the length of the warranty. The warranty must state whether it is a FULL warranty that gives the consumer certain automatic rights or a LIMITED warranty that restricts certain consumer rights. Right from the start, you can eliminate what are likely to be less-than-reputable contractors by considering a list of red flags common to scam artists. Greg and his employees at Community Builders strongly suggest you pay close attention to these indications that you may be dealing with a scammer, such as, if the contractor: •Has materials left over from a previous job: It is not your lucky day when a contractor shows up on your doorstep offering a cut-rate price on a project because of materials left over from a recent job at your neighbor’s house or the house “down the street.” This is a common ploy of fly-by-night operators or handymen who are based out-of-state and use their pick-up trucks as their place of business. •Asks you to get the required building permits: This could be a sign that the contractor is hoping to avoid contact with the local agency that issues such permits. Perhaps he is not licensed or registered, as required by your state or locality. A competent contractor will get all the necessary permits before starting work on the project.
•Does not list a business phone number in the local directory: This can be a red flag indicating that the contractor does not have an established business presence in-state. Or, perhaps relying on a home answering machine to “screen” customer calls. •Pressures you for an immediate decision: A reputable professional will recognize that you need time to consider many factors when choosing a contractor. It would be best to check references; look into the contractor’s standard of work, professional designations, and affiliations; verify his insurance; check to see if he needs a license (and if so, that it is valid); get written estimates from several firms based on identical project specifications; and, contact Better Business Bureau and local consumer protection agencies for information. •Asks you to pay for the entire job up-front or demands only cash: Whatever the reason, never pay for the entire project upfront. Payments should be made by credit card or check in order to provide proof of payment, if needed. Generally speaking, the down payment should not be any more than a third of the total. Greg Wolter believes, “A good contractor will have no problem providing a guarantee on his work. It’s important to ask the contractor to review his or her price protection, money-back guarantee, lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, as well as lifetime glass replacement guarantee. Most contractors will tell you that the better the guarantee, the less likely you will need it. If you follow these basic tips, your remodeling job should be worry free for years to come.”

BBB Advice on Hiring Contractors- Do You Know the Red Flags? ®
Written by: BBB® Whether you are looking to have your home windows replaced, new siding installed on your garage, or a pool built for the summer months ahead, it’s always important to find a home contractor that you can trust. Better Business Bureau recommends following this smart shopper checklist before choosing a contractor for your home. While there are many trustworthy and reliable contractors, there are always those unscrupulous few that end up charging too much and doing too little…or nothing at all.
Start With Trust
“You want a home contractor you can trust, so watch out for red flags from those just looking to make a quick buck,” said Rick Brinkley, Tulsa BBB COO. “Be especially wary of doing business with a contractor who solicits business door-to-door. This could mean that the contractor is not from a local, established business and is instead just passing through and trying to scam innocent consumers.” ®
Compare Costs
Be picky and have lots of options. Seek at least three bids from prospective contractors based on the same specifications, materials and labor needed to complete the project. Homeowners should discuss bids in detail with each contractor and ask questions about variations in pricing. The lowestpriced contractor may not be the best.
Are They Bonded/Licensed & Insured?
Make sure they are certified and insured. Consumers should ask whether the company is insured against claims covering workers’ compensation, property damage, and personal liability in case of accidents. Consumers should obtain the name of the insurance carrier and call to verify coverage. Ask whether the contractor meets licensing and bonding requirements set by the state, county, or city. Check with local authorities to find out if permits are needed before proceeding with the work. The contractor should also be aware of any required permits.
Read & Understand Your Contract
Get everything in writing. Ask whether the contractor will provide a lien waiver upon completion of the job. A lien waiver is a statement by the contractor confirming that all suppliers and subcontractors have been paid for their work. Read and understand the contract before signing. Get all verbal promises in writing. Include start and completion dates in the contract. Remember the rule of thirds and follow it. Pay one third at the start of the project, one third when work is 50 percent completed, and one third after completion.

2015 Top 10 Scams
Better Business Bureau® hears from thousands of consumers and business owners every year about a variety of scams and frauds. Many are new twists on existing scams, but scammers get more sophisticated every year in how they spoof trusted names and how they fool consumers. While BBB doesn’t have specific numbers about how many people were defrauded or for how much, here are the scams we think were most pervasive this past year:
#10 Lottery Scam: “You’ve won a contest! Or the lottery! Or the Publishers Clearinghouse
Sweepstakes! All you have to do to claim your prize is to pay some fees or taxes in advance so they can release your prize”… This is not a new scam, but it is a perennial problem. Remember, you should never have to pay a fee to claim your prize!
#9 Fake Check/Money Order Scam: “We overpaid you, but just send us the difference” (and later the check will bounce. Leaving you liable for the amount withdrawn.)
#8 Work from Home Scam: You got the job! Now just give us all of your personal information. With personal information scammers can do a lot, from draining your bank account to obtaining a new cell phone.
#7 Credit Card Scam: “You can get a better interest rate; just tell us your credit card
number and security code.” Only do busines with reliable, trustworthy companies. Use caution when providing your security code to someone who has called you. If you are in doubt, ask for the callers name and call the company back directly - call a number you are sure is directly to the company in question.
#6 Advance Fee Loan Scam: “You’ve gotten the loan, but first you need to pay a deposit or
insurance.” These “fees” are often a red flag for bogus companies or individuals that take your fee and you never receive the loan.
#5 Government Grant Scam: “You qualified for a government gran; just send the processing fee first.” If you haven’t applied for a grant, you won’t be awarded a grant. You should not have to pay a fee to receive a grant - if you have applied for one.
#4 Tech Support Scam: “You have a computer problem and we are from the tech support. Give us
remote access to your computer and we can fix it for you.” These scammers may try to gain your trust and in doing so they are able to download malware or viruses that are able to steal your personal information.
#3 Sweepstakes/Prizes/Gift Scams: “You’ve won a prize! All you have to do is pre-pay the
taxes!” Victims immediately follow instructions to wire money, but never get their “winnings.” And they’re out the money they paid for “fees and taxes.”
#2 Debt Collection Scam: “ You owe money for an old debt and you’ll be sued if you don’t pay RIGHT NOW”. These types of scams use scare tactics and high pressure to lure their victims into paying over the phone. If you are unsure of an old debt - check your credit report before paying for it.
And the top Scam of the Year, because it’s just so terrifying, is:
#1 Tax Scam: “You owe money to the
government and you’re going to be arrested if you dont pay NOW”. You receive a phone call from someone who claims to be with the IRS (U.S.) or CRA (Canada). They claim you owe money in back taxes and will be arrested or face legal consequences if you do not pay (usually by wire or prepaid debit card). The caller ID is spoofed to appear to be a government agency or the police.
Why Scams Work:
There is a science to scams, and it may surprise you to know that scammers use many of the same techniques as legitimate sales professionals. The difference, of course, is that their “product” is illegal and could cost you a fortune. Here are the major techniques they use to draw you in: Establishing a connection: The scammer builds rapport and a relationship with you. This is usually used face-to-face, as in home improvement scams and many investment scams, but also online romance scams. Source credibility: The scammer uses techniques to make themselves look legitimate, such as fake websites or hacked emails that come from a friend’s account. Most email phishing scams spoof real companies, and many scammers pretend to be someone they are not in order to add credibility. Playing on emotions: Scammers rely on emotion to get you to make a quick decision before you have time to think about it. An emergency situation or a limited time offer is usually their methodology. They count on emotional rather than rational decision-making.
What You Can Do: • Don’t be pressured into making fast decisions. • Take time to research the organization. Check them out on bbb.org, search online, etc. • Never provide your personal information (address, date-of-birth, banking information, ID numbers) to people you do not know. • Don’t click on links from unsolicited email or text messages. • If you are unsure about a call or email that claims to be from your bank, utility company, etc., call the business from the number on your bill or the back of your credit card. • Never send money by wire transfer or prepaid debit card to someone you don’t know or haven’t met in person. • Never send money for an emergency situation unless you’ve been able to verify the emergency. In 2015 BBB® launched BBB Scam Tracker to provide consumers across North America with a place to report scams and fraud, and to warn others of malicious or suspicious activities. All 112 BBBs operating in Canada and the United States are now collecting information from consumers and processing data, which is shared with law enforcement agencies for use in identifying and prosecuting scammers.

A History of Self-Regulation

The challenge of creating high ethical standards in advertising and selling is probably best remembered through the activities of one man. He was Samuel C. Dobbs, sales manager at the time and later president of The Coca-Cola Company. By 1906, the Federal Pure Food and Drug Act had been passed and, with more missionary zeal than care, the government had lodged charges against a number of firms, including the Coca-Cola Company. Dobbs’ company found itself in court on charges which the trial subsequently showed to be unfounded. But during the court proceedings, Dobbs listened to the U.S. Attorney charge Coca-Cola with false advertising of its product. Much as that bothered Dobbs, he was even more shocked at the response of his company’s own attorney: “Why all advertising is exaggerated. Nobody really believes it.” Although that attorney didn’t realize it, his remarks marked the start of the Better Business Bureau movement! (Adapted from an address by B. Tips for Household Storage

Moving into a new home is an exciting adventure. When you first see the expansive space, you may wonder how you will fill up the large rooms. However, soon life begins and before you know, you are wondering where all that space went. If you find yourself struggling to find a place to store everything you’ve accumulated over the years, here are some storage options that might work for you.
First, do an audit.
Buy Furniture That Doubles as Storage.
Before you invest a lot of time deciding where things should go; look through your closet, files and drawers to determine what can be thrown or given away. For clothes, it is a good rule of thumb to get rid of items that you have not worn for more than 12 months. A lot of your household financial documents and papers may be available online through the provider company’s website. If that is the case, discard old financial statements or bills that you can more easily access electronically. Invest in a paper shredder for these documents to protect your identity and accounts. It is very easy to allow cabinets and drawers to become cluttered over time, especially when you have to do a quick cleaning of your home when you have surprise visitors. Declutter those drawers periodically to keep from accumulating outdated flyers, menus, magazines, and newspapers. This will open them up so you can store more day-to-day items that you need to quickly reach.
If you are looking for a fresh look by replacing old, worn-out furniture, buy pieces that also can serve as storage. Consider a coffee table that has drawers or an ottoman that can open up and double as a spot to store your blankets.

Make Use of Wasted Square Footage. In closets and in the kitchen, use all of the space that is available to you. Often homeowners are giving up valuable square footage if they don’t install cabinets or shelves that go up to the ceiling. Store items that are either out of season or that are rarely accessed — such as holiday decorations — on the higher shelves where they are out of the way. This will free up the lower shelves to allow you to get to the things that you use on a regular basis. Utilize low storage with bed risers By simply raising the height of your bed a few more inches, you can gain a lot more storage space that is also hidden away. Bed risers can Page 44
be found in home design and improvement stores in different shapes, styles, textures and colors to complement your current bedroom furniture. They are inexpensive and not only give you added storage space but will also give your bedroom a new look.
Use a Dish-Drying Rack Keep coloring books and art supplies organized in a dish-drying rack. Stack the books, like plates, between the prongs. Store markers, crayons, and pencils in the utensil caddy. Use Spice Containers These squat, clear-topped jars (sold at kitchen supply stores) can keep the loose bits that accumulate on your desktop and in your drawers—stamps, Post-it notes, paper clips, rubber bands, etc.—under control. Use Velcro Tape
For the small things Use Jewelry boxes Instead of throwing away your cardboard jewelry box, clip them together to create tidy, divided storage for lipstick, pens, and pencils or whatever clutters your drawers. Use Glass Jars Grandpa’s wood-shop solution of attaching glass jars underneath a table or a shelf is tried-and-true. This trick works in the garage, the basement, and the craft room or even possibly the home office if you have an appropriate area. Nail or superglue the lids to the underside of a surface near tool storage, and then twist the jars into place. Put likesize nuts and bolts in one jar, wood screws in another, nails in another. Also, attach an empty jar so that when you’re working on a project, you can gather the necessary hardware and stow it there. Use Shower Curtain Hooks If space allows, place hooks on a closet bar and hang purses from them. Use a Paper Towel Holder For easy access to the ribbon, slide spools onto a paper towel stands post. Stack them from largest to smallest, bottom to top. When done, tape the ribbon ends to their spools to keep them neat. BBB® Home Remodeling Guide
Velcro tape is handy to keep electronic cords in check. Screw a small hook into the bottom of a desk and hang bundled wires up and out of sight. To keep track of which cord belongs to which machine, attach plastic bread tie with the name of the electronic device near the plugs. Use a Tension Rod To keep pot lids from rattling around and getting lost in kitchen drawers, position a short tension rod to create a divider. Stack pots and pans in the larger section and lean the lids against the rod on the smaller side. Use a Coat Rack Hang your most frequently worn necklaces and bracelets within easy reach on a wallmounted coat rack. Bonus: They’ll stay tangle-free when not decorating your neck. Or mount corkboard on a wall and drape necklaces from straight pins. Use a Pegboard Keep sports equipment of all shapes and sizes tidy with an adaptable pegboard. A pegboard with 1/4-inch holes will hold more weight than other sizes. The holes will also be able to accommodate hooks in three common sizes: 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 inch. Be sure to hang only lightweight items on the skinnier hooks, so they won’t pull out of the pegboard. Use a Desktop Organizer A standard desktop organizer can hold bathroom essentials, such as makeup, cotton swabs, brushes, and combs. Page 45

Got Mold? Written by: BBB Better Business Bureau serving Eastern Oklahoma (BBB®), along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are advising homeowners to be proactive when it comes to dealing with mold and mildew. Many homeowners are looking for remedies in dealing with the aftermath of the devastating floods that have hit so many homes around the country. While water damage can be a small part of the water damage problem, mold can be an ever growing, pesky problem that if not taken care of quickly, can last forever. BBB and the EPA are advising homeowners to be proactive when it comes to dealing with mold and mildew. How do molds affect people? Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, exposure to molds can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation. Some people, such as those with serious allergies to molds, may have more severe reactions. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Some people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs. In 2004, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract BBB® Home Remodeling Guide
symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition. The IOM also found limited or suggestive evidence linking indoor mold exposure and respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children. In 2009, the World Health Organization issued additional guidance, the WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality: Dampness and Mold. Other studies have suggested a potential link of early mold exposure to development of asthma in some children, particularly among children who may be genetically susceptible to asthma development, and that selected interventions that improve housing conditions can reduce morbidity from asthma and respiratory allergies, but more research is needed in this regard. In 2015, BBB received nearly 117,000 inquiries on mold and mildew eradicators. As mold can ultimately destroy anything it lands on, it is important to act smart and fast. While homeowners should always avoid handling and touching mold without wearing proper gloves and respiratory protection, there are also many other things to keep in mind. BBB and the EPA advise homeowners to consider these 10 things you should know about mold: 1. Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory complaints. Page 48
2. There is no practical way to eliminate all molds and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
8. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
3. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
4. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth. 5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by: • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside • Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers • Increasing ventilation • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning 6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth. 7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.

10. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Remodeling is a great way to create a home environment that can meet your family’s changing needs and tastes without you having to spend a lot of money. Before you spend your hard earned dollars, however, make sure that the changes you make now will have longer-term benefits for you when you look to sell your home in the future. You should find out what features are standard for homes in your neighborhood. If you only have one bathroom but most of the other homes average two or more, you will want to bring your house up to that standard. On the flipside, do not make changes to your house that are too extravagant or out-of-place for your neighborhood. Make sure you are not making changes what will turn off prospective buyers. Keep in mind that future home buyers would like to see in their next home. It is often wiser to add an additional bathroom or bedroom rather than a sunroom or sauna, for example, which are costly and will not necessarily be a priority for anyone else.
Harvard University advises that smaller or midrange jobs overall will tend to recover a higher percentage of their cost than larger, higher-end projects. According to US News replacing old elements, such as doors, windows and siding yielded a better financial return than bigger remodeling projects. A recent report found that kitchen projects yielded a higher return than bath projects, with a minor kitchen remodel adding 82.7 percent of the project’s cost back to the homes value. While the average cost of a minor kitchen remodel - new cabinet doors, appliances, counter-tops, sink, faucet, paint and hardware - was around $18,000 nationwide, according to Cost vs. Value report, savvy shoppers can do it for less than the buyer assumes. While these numbers represent national averages and percentages that may vary, you can see that remodeling is generally a worthwhile investment if you do your homework and choose a reliable, trustworthy professional. Deck or Patio? Enjoy the Outdoors with a New Living Space. A new deck or patio can be the perfect gathering place, adding a new dimension to your yard and creating space that you didn’t even know you had. A well-planned outdoor living space can become a homeowner’s backyard getaway, but the wrong deck or patio can end up as unused dead space. Keep the following in mind and you’ll find yourself enjoying the sunshine from your outdoor retreat in no time. Deck or Patio? When deciding on whether you’d like your new outdoor haven to be a patio or deck, first do some research. Some areas have building codes or terrains that dictate one or the other. Your local home builders association can be a good source of information. What kind of budget are you working with? Decks can be a more affordable option than patios, but concrete, while more expensive, tends to be the sturdiest material with the lowest maintenance needs. Several factors can determine whether a deck or patio is best for you: • How much weight does your space need to hold? • Does rain or snow create runoff problems on a flat patio surface? If you have a rough backyard terrain, a raised deck may be the better choice instead of the expense of an excavation for a patio. Materials Matter Most decks are made of wood, ranging from pressure-treated pine and fir to more durable—and pricey—woods such as red cedar, redwoods and tropical hardwoods. No matter what the type, wood decks require maintenance and even then, with less expensive woods, swelling and warping will still occur over time. To reduce the amount of maintenance required, consider composite and vinyl decking. These materials are less susceptible to swelling and also are more resistant to insects. The cost, however, can be significantly higher, particularly if coordinating railing and balustrade systems. Concrete decks, while much more expensive than wood or composite, are the most durable and require only the occasional pressure wash and periodic re-sealing.
