We’ve got them—old favorites and new exciting opportunities. They’re coming again—Study Groups—now for the 2015–2016 year, and they’re great! Regular book clubs continue: “Contemporary Fiction,” “Mystery Book Club,” “Brandeis Men’s Book Club,” “Page Turners,” Shakespeare (Twelfth Night), and “Books and Bagels.” “You’ve Gotta Have Art” and “Southwest Native American Culture Through Jewelry” are annual big winners, as is Harvey Wolfe’s classical music series, “warhorses.” If you love movies, our many cinema series continue with “Foreign Film,” Warren Bodow’s masterpieces, and “Fabulous Flicks” 1 and 2. The Rogue Theatre will again present a preview based on Strindberg’s Miss Julie. “Current Public Policy Issues” returns to a delighted crowd. The “How & Why of Jewish Worship” was too short last year, so we have doubled the days allotted to two dates. Our hobbies, games, and crafts Study Groups are returning intact: “Jewelry Making for Novices,” “Beginning Mah Jongg,” “Guided Bridge,” and “Artisan Bread.” Other groups continue unchanged: “Meditation,” “Nostalgia Trip Through the Decades,” “Let’s Meet for an Ethnic Lunch,” “Single Women’s Circle,” “Lady Boomers,” and “Eat Dessert First.” There are wonderful new classes. Barry Friedman, president of the Jewish History Museum, will lead “Jewish History in Southern Arizona,” while Sue Keller gives her previous OASIS course on “Jewish Immigration in America” and a class on Jewish art and artists. Medicine Man Gallery returns with a course on Navajo rugs. Judy Norris has brought in an artist who will teach painting in reverse on the back of glass. We have an exciting group of new classes. Lois Bodin will run “Sit ’N’ Stitch” for knitters, crocheters, embroiderers, cross-stitchers, needle pointers, and more, and Marty Kass returns with his class on “Crafting with Gourds.” We will have an Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum docent teach about the creatures in your own backyard—and your house! We are all maturing, so we have a class on planning for the future, including legal information (family trusts, wills), medical preparation (living wills and medical power of attorney), religious traditions, working with funeral homes, and dealing with death and dying. Kathy Cohen will lead a “Cinema for Singles” group, attending a movie together, with an option for a self-pay dinner afterward. We would like to start a bowling group. If you are interested in organizing such a class, contact Steve Seltzer, [email protected] or 299-3788.

Unrivaled Academic Experience: Brandeis Brandeis University has achieved something extraordinary. It is a leading research university with the feel of a small liberal arts college, where students receive personal attention from an exceptional faculty. Students who are passionate about their academics and don’t want to be limited to a single field of study belong at Brandeis. Students take ownership of their educational experience. They explore, create, learn, and grow. Students at Brandeis have hundreds of opportunities to work alongside faculty. Many publish research and scholarly papers in the best peer-reviewed science and humanities journals in the world by the end of their sophomore year!

A student said, “My friends were impressed that I’m taking a class with a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner. I told them it’s a class of 15, and she knows my name. That’s when they decided they’re also applying to Brandeis.”

Letter from Tucson VAMC The Tucson Chapter received the following letter from the Tucson VA Medical Center: On behalf of the Tucson-Southern Arizona VA HCS patients and staff, we would like to extend our appreciation to you for your donation of fifty books for the book carts on March 11, 2015. Your thoughtfulness reflects the concern that you feel for our veterans for the service they provided to all of us while in service to our country. Without your support, we could not provide for the smaller niceties that make hospitalization more bearable. Your thoughtfulness also reflects the concertn and compassion that our community feels for our veterans. Thank you for your continued support.

New Members

Be sure to place this event on your calendar. On Tuesday, August 4, 10:30 to noon, we will host all new and prospective members with a brunch at the home of Patrice Brown, 1305 E. Vía Entrada. You will learn of all the personal, community, and Brandeis benefits and opportunities available to you with your Tucson BNC membership. Contact Membership Co-VPs Terri Freed or Marilyn Lobell with the names of prospective members or if you are a new member who has not been contacted.

Community Service/ Social Justice

The Tucson chapter gives back to our community. Marilyn Lobell, our Community Service Chairman, reminds us of the organizations we are supporting this year: The Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse is in need of hotel toiletries and personal-care items. They also need NEW socks and underwear for children, teens, and women. Youth On Their Own (YOTO) is an organization that supports high school graduation of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs, and guidance. They always need teen hygiene products and school supplies. Books From Mom is a program that gives new and gently used children’s books to women in prison so they can read to their visiting offspring. Brandeis is always looking for new ways to help our community. If you have a way to help or wish to make a donation, contact Marilyn Lobell, [email protected] or 615-0877, or Arlene Gray, [email protected] or 229-0006. Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody!

The new school year is beginning, and there is need by Youth On Their Own (YOTO) for new socks, cosmetics, and school supplies for teenage

students. Emerge! can use new socks and underwear for woman and new clothes for infants, children, and teens.

Meet Your Study Group Leader When lovely young Phyllis Fassler was in training as a student nurse at Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing, an elderly patient named Max insisted she meet his nephew. She politely declined, but Max kept on insisting, and that is how Phyllis met Jordan Fassler, who not only swept her off her feet at age 19, but married her in Brooklyn after a whirlwind courtship. Jordan trained as a teacher, and they decided to settle in Tucson. where he taught middle school for 35 years. Phyllis, who was born in New Haven, Connecticut, fell in love again. This time, it was with the life she shared with her husband and two children in Tucson. Her son and daughter both lived out their mother’s dream of joining the medical profession. Her son, Eric, became a obstetriciangynecologist in Seattle, Washington. Daughter Elise is a nurse practitioner specializing in obstetrics and gynecology here in Tucson. They have produced four granddaughters who are a joy to behold. With a talented eye for fashion, it was only natural for Phyllis to try her hand in retailing. She managed the Casual Corner shop for 18 years. After the store closed, she went on to work for Talbots. Her leadership skills carried over to her organization work. She is a past president of Hadassah and currently a vice-president in the Tucson Chapter of Brandeis. After the loss of her husband Jordan, Brandeis became a life saver. Phyllis has met so many woman with whom she shares many common interests. The congeniality of the people is appealing. She wanted to be active because she recognized that her work would serve a worthy cause. She became very involved when she represented Tucson Brandeis at Shalom Tucson. This spring, Phyllis served on the nominating committee for the chapter, which went on to nominate her as Program Co-Vice President with Aimee Doctoroff. This is a job she will serve with relish. Phyllis loves music and theater and has season tickets to many events in town. She intends to find us exceptionally entertaining programs. She has great ideas, and we have a great deal to look forward to with Phyllis in charge. With her Brandeis friends, Phyllis is a member of “Single Women’s Circle,” “Foreign Films,” “You Gotta Have Art,” and “Guided Bridge” Study Groups. Our chapter is fortunate to have Phyllis Fassler on our board.

We Need Underwriters The Book Business plans to have Book Sales every second Sunday at the Book Depot. This requires changing the layout of the building. We will use the front of the building for on-line books only and the rear for a monthly Book Sale open to the general public. For these plans to succeed, we need underwriters for: 1) New roof evaporative cooler, $400. 2) New display tables for Book Sales, $35 per table. 3) Two refurbished computers, $100 each. 4) Additional tables for the computer for on-line books sales, $35. 5) Outdoor 10x10-foot tent, $50. Please send your donation to Rachel Barker, 1001 E. Camino de los Padres, Tucson 85718, made out to Brandeis University and marked in the memo as Book Depot Donation. We thank you for your support of the Book Business, which raises money for our Endowed Scholarship for a Tucson-area student accepted at Brandeis University.

What’s New at Brandeis University in Waltham? Brandeis Alumni Join the U.S. Supreme Court Bar Fourteen Brandeis University alumni were in Washington, D.C., on June 1, 2015, to be sworn into the U.S. Supreme Court bar. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg addressed the Brandeis alumni who were sworn in on June 4, and the university honored them at the swearing-in ceremony in Washington. Brandeis President Frederick M. Lawrence, who has been a member of the U.S. Supreme Court bar since 1993, welcomed the alumni to the nation’s highest court. This marked the fourth year that Brandeis has sponsored the swearing-in ceremony, a tradition started by Lawrence. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Brandeis Honorary ’96, stopped by the ceremony to greet the group, and Ginsburg stayed on to answer some questions. Lawrence presented each lawyer with a copy of Lincoln and the Jews: A History, a new book co-authored by Jonathan D. Sarna, ’75, MA’75, the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis. Frank Brandeis Gilbert, the grandson of the university’s namesake Louis D. Brandeis, an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939, also was in attendance. While at the Supreme Court, the group attended the reading of four opinions, including the court’s 8-to-1 decision in favor of a Muslim woman who was denied a job at a clothing store chain because her headscarf violated the company’s “Look Policy.”
