Volume XXXIX, Number 6 I resolve…Actually, that is as far as I have gotten on my obligatory New Year’s list of promises to myself that I know I will not keep. We all do it. We tell ourselves that this is the year we are really going to: (Choose as many as you would like.) 1. Lose weight 2. Stop procrastinating 3. Save more 4. quit ________ (fill in the blank) Unfortunately, by the Ides of March, we face the inevitable ennui of winter and most of these solemn vows are long since forgotten or rationalized away. I do not know about you, but I am very good at making what is good for me seem reasonably impossible, even detrimental. At least this way, I am not hard pressed to come up with a new list each year. I have not checked one off the old list since Nixon was President. Developing real resolve requires some honest reflection, and I’m just too stressed to reflect right now. Perhaps, I am trying to focus too much on action and not enough on attitude. A good list of resolutions should be short, gentle, comforting, and affirming. And so, for better or worse, let me share mine. They are certainly not definitive or terribly profound. My struggles are, after all, my own. However, you might find a sentence or two helpful. And so, I RESOLVE: (I thought the capital letters might make me really take these to heart.)

Those based in understanding and altruism promote growth. …to play a lot of golf. Not because golf is important, but because it is not. It keeps one humble, social, and hopeful. …to try to find middle ground between a life that is quietly, desperately, and insanely cacophonous. We teach it as “centering prayer.” When I read the great biographies, the subjects seemed to live in the “center,” calm in crisis and steadfast in adversity. …to be kinder, gentler, quieter, and more purposeful. I want to pass good news more quickly than bad, compliments tenfold to criticisms, and say I am sorry much more quickly than I do. …to accumulate less. I already have more things than I need. I have more things than I want. Should I move again, I would like to do so with a small truck with room to spare.

And lastly, I resolve to act justly – when it is popular and when it is not – when it will bring praise and when it will bring criticism – and whether it will be understood or misconstrued. WWJD? Except for the golf, those four words are probably the best list of resolutions any of us could concoct. I guess it was simpler than I thought.

1. …to spend less time in the “land of certainty” and more time in the “land of wonder.” It is so easy to become so wrapped up in the business of life that I lose contact with the beauty of life. Poetry, nature, music, and literature can refresh the soul and nurture the spirit. 2. …to try less to subjugate the will of others and to spend more time trying to understand their motivation. Relationships based solely on power almost always tend to be struggles to the end.

The mission of Roncalli High School is to educate in the Catholic traditions of spiritual growth, life-long service, and academic excellence. Roncalli High School Mission Statement, adopted May 2012.

Pierside Plaza Auction

Important Auction Meeting Wednesday, January 13th at 6:00 p.m. There will be an auction meeting for all committee members on Wednesday, January 13th, at 6:00 p.m. in the café. This is for all soliciting committee members (for booths such as Fine Art, Services, Sports, etc.) not for the food, refreshments, registration, cashiering, or raffle areas. An e-mail and postcard will be sent to all who should be there. After this meeting, the 2016 Pierside Auction will then be in full swing. Once again, the money raffle will have a first place prize of $10,000. The other prizes consist of one $2,000 winner; two $1,000 winners, and two $500 winners. Tickets are now being sold. If you would like to purchase one or more, please come to the Development Office or call us at 686-8114. The goal is to sell all 500 before auction night. Soliciting for the auction is just beginning; therefore, it’s just the right time to volunteer to help. Sign up for a committee, donate an item, or even give cash for any booth. If you have any questions concerning the auction, please call me at 686-8150 or email [email protected]

Take twelve fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor and hate, cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from all the past— have them fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time. Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot this way) but prepare one day at a time. Into each day put equal parts of faith, patience, courage, work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavor of the rest), hope, fidelity, liberality, kindness, rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad dressing— don’t do it), prayer, meditation, and one wellselected resolution. Put in about one teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor.

Music Boosters Atrium Decoration Take Down Monday, January 4th @ 5:00 pm Financial Aid UW Manitowoc will be hosting College Goal Wisconsin on Wednesday, February 24 at 6:00 p.m. It’s also referred to as “Fill out your FAFSA” night. Parents and students can bring their information along, and volunteers will be able to assist them with their FAFSA. Juniors We were notified that the PSAT scores will not be available until January. They will be given back in class along with an explanation on how to interpret them. ACT Prep class Juniors and their parents will receive an email with the dates and times listed. All sessions will be completed before the April ACT test date. It is recommended that students take the ACT in the spring of their junior year either April or June. This ensures that students have almost 3 full years of English, math, science, and social studies which will help them do better on the test.
