Third Week Of Advent

Volunteers Still Needed to Light Advent Candles

During the season of Advent, we begin each liturgy by lighting the Advent wreath and praying for the coming of Christ. If you and/or your family would like to take part in this ceremony by lighting the advent candle at a Mass, please contact Jen Monforton @abecket.org, or call the parish office (9811333) to let her know which Mass you would prefer.

“Heaven Starts Now”

Please join us at Church on December 14th at 7 PM for a small group discussion on Fr. John Riccardo’s new book, “Heaven Starts Now Becoming a Saint Day by Day.” The book challenges all of us to be saints. And what a great way to start something anew in Advent! We will meet once a month on 2nd Wednesday evenings. The book is short so we will wrap up in the spring. Come join some of your Christian brothers and sisters in love to become better Catholics. For more information on the small group or how to order the book, please contact Dennis O’Beirne @ (734) 2233336. Hope to see you there!!!

December 11, 2016

Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent the Sunday we light the rose colored candle. Our season of preparation is dwindling down. Rose is the color of joy as we realize our Advent wait is half over. In about a week, on Monday evening, December 19th, at 7 PM we have one last opportunity to participate in a communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation with individual confession of sin and absolution. This Sacrament is a great way to help prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christmas. Also, there is one more Saturday before Christmas for the individual celebration of the Sacrament and I will be available from 3 4 PM next Saturday, December 17th. This is an appropriate season to remember to ask Mary to pray with and for us as we meditate on her joyful anticipation of the birth of her first born Son our Savior, Redeemer and God. Last Thursday, we celebrated the feast of her Immaculate Conception and this Monday, December 12th, we celebrated Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas. Mary, Mother of God., pray for us! Continue to have a very Blessed Advent!! Fr. Chris

AAA Pregnancy Resource Center

St. Thomas a' Becket has, in the past, participated in events such as the Baby Bottle Campaign and the Race for Life. Additionally, you may have chosen an ornament from our Advent tree asking to provide diapers, Wipes, onesies, or toiletries. But what or who is the AAA Pregnancy Resource Center? Why and when were they founded? What kinds of services do they provide and to whom? Where are they located? How are they supported? How much do their services cost? Do they provide pregnancy tests? In this and in succeeding articles these questions and more will be answered. The AAA Pregnancy Center opened it's doors in May, 1973 in answer to the passage of Roe vs Wade on Jan. 22, 1973, legalizing abortions in the United States. For fortythree years we have been helping women who find themselves in an unexpected problem pregnancy. The center is a Christ centered ministry, dedicated to the sanctity of life. We are totally self supporting and nonpolitical. So far this year we have had 141+ new clients, 133+ pregnancy tests, 22+ births recorded and 41+ sonograms. The Knights of Columbus is inviting St. Thomas a’Becket boys and girls from ages 5 through 14 to participate in our international "Keep Christ in Christmas" poster contest. By engaging the creativity and imaginations of our young people, we hope that they will come to a deeper understanding of the true, spiritual meaning of Christmas. Winning entries will advance to the district/region and then to state, national, and international levels. The winning entries will serve as the basis for a series of new Christmas posters that encourage a deeper understanding of the holiday. Entry forms can be obtained from Miss Betsy in the Faith Formation Office and completed posters must be submitted to her by this Wednesday, December 14th. The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by Father Michael McGivney, a parish priest in New Haven, Conn. With charity as its central commitment, we have grown to 1.9 million members worldwide. In the last decade, the Knights have donated more than $1.5 billion and gave more that 691 million hours of volunteer service to charitable causes.

Craft Show Thanks!

It is not possible to pull off a large event without the help of many hands. I sincerely thank all the members of our Craft Show Committee, our welloiled machine, many of whose work is behind the scenes and begin as early as February to complete their tasks! I would also like to thank our wonderful office staff who, among other things, fielded calls and emails and made copies and signage. Thank you to Rick and Mike for their support and “heavy lifting.” Thank you to all of the parish bakers, as well as our money counters and other volunteers who helped the day of the craft show. I appreciate all of you! We have been told by many that this is a very good event, well organized, with people who are so cheerful and welcoming. All of the proceeds of this event go right back to our church general fund. Something to be proud of. Finally, a big thank you to Fr. Chris for baking his two Caribbean Orange Coconut Bars with Butterscotch Chips for the Silent Auction! They were a hit! Our silent auction winners were Marv Dery and Pat Sullivan. Blessings of the season. Sue Martinez

Retirement Fund For Religious

This weekend is the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. An envelope is enclosed in today’s Chancellor for your use. Here are some reasons why we ask you to give…… • The total amount donated since 1988, almost $500 million would cover just one year’s costs for skilled nursing and assisted living for more than 11,000 elderly religious who now need this care. • More than 32,000 women religious and more than 5,200 men religious are past 70 and their total costs of living exceed $925 million annually. • One out of every five religious institutes has less than 20 percent of the amount needed to care for elderly members. • Skilled nursing care for frail religious averages $133 a day. (The average cost for a shared room in a skilled nursing facility in the United States is $169 per day; a private room averages $192.) • Religious retirement costs are the responsibility of the religious institute, rather than the diocese. • Religious receive approximately onethird the Social Security benefit of the average U.S. beneficiary. Less than six percent of your donations are used for administration and promotion costs. Thank you for your generosity.

Ushers Needed!

We are in need of more volunteers to be ushers at all the Masses. There is a shortage each week, yet we know that there is no shortage of helpful people here at St. Thomas a' Becket! Even if you cannot commit to being on a team, maybe you could help out during the upcoming holiday season? At Christmas there will be Masses in both the Church and Family Life Center. If you would like to give this a try, please contact the parish office, or email Mike Morency at [email protected], or Jen Monforton at jen.monforton@ abecket.org.

Yarn Collection For Canton Seniors

The senior group at the Canton Summit and other groups will always take donations of yarn of any color for projects they make for Christmas and for the sick. Please bring any yarn you would like to donate to the main parish office.

Thanks to so many of you who have been filling our wagons with food, paper goods, and cleaning and personal care items. The way it's looking, we should be able to provide our needy families with a sumptuous assortment for their Christmas enjoyment. Please continue to bring in your donations. They will all be put to good use. This Christmas we will be providing for 39 families which include 139 individuals. They are all families that we have visited in their own homes. A large percentage of them reside in trailers. There are more than 70 children represented. The children's wish list items include the same things most children wish for superheroes, dolls, toy cars, books, craft items but also items that are not at the top of most children's lists coats, boots, mittens, socks and underwear. The Advent Tree gifts that you provide will fulfill those wishes and based on your generosity from previous years, you will go above and beyond. We Vincentians are grateful for all that you give to us. Know that it will pass through our hands to those who seek our help. Together we continue to be the eyes, the hands and the feet of our beloved Savior. Just a reminder we hope to see some of you Monday, Dec. 12th to sort the advent tree gifts after morning mass, and again when we put together food baskets on Friday, Dec. 16th St. Vincent de Paul, pray for us, our benefactors and those we serve

CARDINAL DOLAN WELCOMES CONTINUED YEAR OF MERCY PROVISION FOR POST-ABORTION HEALING December 2, 2016

WASHINGTON Cardinal Timothy Dolan, chairman of the Committee on ProLife Activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), welcomed Pope Francis' November 20 apostolic letter "Miseri cordia et Misera.. " (" Mercy and Misery"). In his letter, Pope Francis extended the Year of Mercy provision granting priests worldwide a faculty related to the sin of abortion. For many years in the United States, most bishops have granted their priests this faculty. In addition to sacramental confession, the Church offers confidential and compassionate help through diocesan Project Rachel ministries. Pope Francis wrote: "I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life. In the same way, however, I can and must state that there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father" (Miseri cordia et Misera,. .12) Since 1984, dedicated ministries throughout the nation have accompanied those seeking forgive ness, healing, and peace after losing a child to abortion. Wherever a person might be in their healing journey, Project Rachel offers free, confidential help. To find the nearest diocesan healing ministry, go to the 'Find Help' map at www.hopeafterabortion.org or www.esperanzaposaborto.org.
