February 2015

The Source Document President’s Message Happy February to Everyone! Ok, I am sounding a little too happy for February. Maybe it has something to do with an upcoming Caribbean cruise!  Congratulations to the newly elected officers for the 2015-2016 year! • President – Sandra Sivertson • Secretary – Shawna Piatz

• Vice President – Jon Breckel • Treasurer – Jennifer Thorson

I am excited to see what this ambitious group of officers will achieve in the next year! Last year Sandra and Jon attended the IIA’s Leadership Academy. This year, Shawna and Jennifer will attend. The Leadership Academy energizes the officer group for the upcoming year and provides a forum to identify opportunities and approaches taken by other chapters. In the last newsletter, I solicited interest in the chapter holding a few working sessions on specific audit topics to accomplish information/knowledge sharing. I received positive feedback from several members and have identified the following list of topics. • • • •

Operational Audit Approach Financial Audit Approach Dashboard Approach to Audit Reports Obtaining Management Buy-in

• Internal Audit Evaluation • Audit Universe Risk Assessment • Audit planning process

Shawna Piatz from Basin Electric will host the first working session sometime in March. Stay tuned for the topic(s) and date! As auditors, we all run into situations where individuals expect us to blindly trust what they say. I found a quote that provides a good response to these situations. “Skepticism does not mean a lack of trust. Rather, it means, ‘I trust you, but my responsibilities require me to confirm what you and others tell me.’ ” --- IIA Tone at the Top February 2015 edition. Stay Warm! Member Spotlight Jill Steinwand, Internal Auditor II – Basin Electric Power Cooperative 1. Brief synopsis of your professional career. Throughout college, I had several internships working for North Dakota’s Senator and Representative both in Washington, D.C. and in Fargo, N.D. After graduating from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2013 with my Accounting and Economics degrees, I accepted a rotational position at Basin Electric Power Cooperative in Bismarck. I spent the next year and a half rotating through Accounts Payable, Internal Auditing, Capital Assets and Middle Office before taking a permanent position in Internal Auditing last September. 2. Why did you become a member of the IIA? Since I am new to the Internal Auditing profession, I wanted an organization to help me grow in my professional career and network with other business professionals. 3. What are some of your greatest successes or contributions? In November, I passed my final section of the CPA exam. 4. Most recent book you’ve read. I’m currently reading, “Professional Ethics: The AICPA’s Comprehensive Course” so I can pass the ethics portion of the CPA exam and officially receive my license. 5. Tell us something most people don’t know about you. My full name is Jill Imhoff Steinwand (named after my mother’s maiden name). At my college graduation, the announcer was so worried about pronouncing my middle name correctly he accidentally called me “Jeff.” 6. If you could have a superpower…which would you pick? I would love the ability to teleport from place to place or the ability to time travel. 7. Most unusual or interesting job you’ve had. While interning in Washington, D.C., I have had the opportunity to meet and hear many interesting people speak including John McCain, Marco Rubio, Mitch McConnell, Colin Powell and Alan Greenspan. I also enjoyed giving Capitol tours to North Dakota constituents. 8. Family, hobbies. My parents, Todd and Shelly, younger sister Jessie and a younger brother Andrew live in Bismarck. We also have a family dog, Murphy. I enjoy cooking, baking, exercising and spending time with family and friends.
