MEADOWLANDS YMCA 21ST CCLC Soaring Beyond Expectations-A Statewide Afterschool Celebration The Meadowlands YMCA 21st CCLC participated at the New Jersey Department of Education Soaring Beyond Expectations celebration on June 7, 2016 in Mercerville New Jersey. The Meadowlands YMCA 21st CCLC was selected from many 21st CCLC programs. The Meadowlands YMCA 21st CCLC, in partnership with the Moonachie School District and Superintendent Dr. Johnathon Ponds, has operated since September 3, 2014. The program currently serves 140 students in grades 4 through 8 at Robert L Craig School. Phil Facendola is the Director of the YMCA program. The focused theme is STEAM where the students learn critical thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning skills. The program also provides students with health and fitness activities along with nutrition education. All students receive homework help and participate in STEAM, nutrition and fitness classes. Some of the classes offered at the program are Healthy Chefs of the Future, Zumba, Creative Lettering, Film and Media, Busy Builders and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI). Academic remediation is offered to all grades. The most popular class has been Healthy Chefs of the Future, which was presented at the state wide celebration. Laura Vlacancich, Dietitian, presented a power point about her class to all the other Directors. Laura taught a STEM class then they created a beautiful fruit parfait and a fruit watermelon slice of fruit pizza with colorful, crisp, delicious fresh fruits. Another important aspect was how The Healthy Chefs classes mesh with the arts classes taught by their art teacher, Vanessa Campos. Vanessa then had the Directors create foods from model magic and create a variety of foods for their food plate. Linda Napoli, also another asset to the program, provided assistance that day. Linda Napoli also teaches Readorium and Brain Pop to the children. They were taught how there is a connection in health and nutrition and culinary arts, visual arts, and language arts in a meaningful way that aligns with the NJ Common Core Content Standards. It was an eventful day for all that attended the conference.

NATIONAL TREE BENEFIT CALCULATOR

Trees, as anyone who's ever sat under the shade of one sipping a lemonade in their own front yard can tell you, are a boon to your lifestyle, your curb appeal and your property value. But how much is that tree actually worth, in real, American dollars? It's really hard to put a price on pretty, but we found a website that wants to try. The National Tree Benefit Calculator examines how a tree of a particular species located in a particular zip code affects cermain economic and environmental factors in the community. It's a not a precise tool, but it is a great starting point to understand how a certain type or size of tree might affect your bottom line. Once you input your zip code and the species and diameter of your tree, the calculator spits out a comprehensive analysis of that tree's benefit to your home and the surrounding area in a few different areas: • Property Values: Buyers are likely to pay more for a home with more trees and a higher Leaf Surface Area (LSA). • Storm Water Runoff: Trees block and filter street chemicals from getting into streams, rivers and oceans. • Energy Consumption: Trees offer natural shade and insulation from the elements, reducing your cooling and heating costs. • Air Quality: Trees absorb pollutants like ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide through their leaves. • Carbon Reduction: Tree's "lock up" CO2 in their roots, trunks, stems and leaves while they grow. Plus there's the reduction in a building's energy consumption, too. The Tree Benefit Calculator allows anyone to make a simple estimation of the benefits individual street-side trees provide. This tool is based on i-Tree’s street tree assessment tool called STREETS. With inputs of location, species and tree size, users will get an understanding of the environmental and economic value trees provide on an annual basis. The Tree Benefit Calculator is intended to be simple and accessible. As such, this tool should be considered a starting point for understanding trees’ value in the community, rather than a scientific accounting of precise values. For more detailed information on urban and community forest assessments, visit the i-Tree website: http://www.treebenefits.com/calculator.

ROBERT L. CRAIG SCHOOL NEWS On Thursday, April 21st, the Robert L. Craig School in Moonachie held its annual Curriculum Expo. Projects from all classes and grade levels were on display for the community. Some of the projects on display included growing plants, sculptures created in art classes and roller coasters made by the YMCA students.

Also on display was a project titled, “The Adventures of Flat Stanley,” and the PTO held its annual Book Fair. The RLC film and drama club hosted a successful bake sale, and students in the wind and Pbone ensembles performed on the music stage. There was a table to display the new Box Tops for Education contest, and parents could try their hand at computer coding in the library. Robert L. Craig School 8th grader, Katie Macalintal, was this year's Grand Prize Winner in the Annual Fire Safety Poster Contest! She was chosen as the best of all three divisions and the overall best poster in the state! Katie was awarded her prize - an Apple computer - at the End of the Year Awards Assembly June 17th, 2016 at the school. Ms. Ten Hoeve - her art teacher - is exceptionally proud of Katie and her amazing design. Understanding the components of what makes a great poster is a lesson Katie clearly aced. She demonstrates Moonachie pride and is always striving for excellence.

Congratulations!

A heartfelt thanks goes to FLOMO and Wendy Shen, the founder of FLOMO, for arranging with XYZ Printing Company who donated four 3D Printers valued at $400 each to the Robert L. Craig School. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. FLOMO is a national brand and wholesaler company of quality bags, seasonal products, school and office supplies, every day party ware, educational items like teacher building blocks and much more. FLOMO recently moved their headquarters from Teterboro, New Jersey to 115 Moonachie Avenue, Moonachie, New Jersey. Robert L. Craig School is so grateful to FLOMO and XYZ Printing Company for their generous donation. The printers will be used in the school’s arts, computer, math, science, and after school programs including our YMCA after school program. The children will be able to make chess pieces, food products, science and math related pieces, clothing and cars and so much more using these printers. Because of the generosity of donors like FLOMO and XYZ Printing Company, a huge difference has been made to our students, school and community. Our children could take advantage of the latest technological innovations with their quality products.

Poelandia: 6th Grade Fan Club Born Ms. Perez has started a stimulating, thought-provoking 6th grade book club dedicated to the master of horror himself, Edgar Allan Poe. After completing their unit on Poe, Ms. Perez noticed a staggering amount of students riveted by Poe’s cryptic charm. She recognized she couldn’t solely focus on Poe’s short stories and poems all year long, but she witnessed such an interest with the melancholy author she knew she had to think of a way to keep the conversation alive. Not only did she organize The 2016 Edgar Awards for her class (a real award show that is organized by the Mystery Writers of America) but she thought the best way to read Poe would be to start a book club dedicated to reading all of his works. 14 students pleaded to be a part of the historic club! It’s no surprise when she tweeted their first official club meeting using her educational twitter, the Mystery Writers of America liked it! Follow her on twitter and keep up with the remarkable events the 6th grade is achieving! Twitter: MsPerez_Poeland
