REBUILD BY DESIGN The Rebuild by Design project is starting to really ramp up. This is the project that is going to address the flooding in our community. The feasibility study is underway and project alternatives are being identified and evaluated. These alternatives will be presented to the community in the coming months. We would like the residents and businesses to be informed of and comment on the solutions being discussed. A Citizen Advisory Group (CAG) has been formed but will continue to accept members through the life of the project. As a member of the CAG you would meet on a monthly basis with the NJDEP Project Team, their consultants (AECOM), other residents, business owners and civic groups to discuss the solutions being evaluated, send your comments to the Executive Steering Committee, and have a real impact on the future of our community. On March 23, at the Robert L. Craig School, approximately 50 people came together for the first Citizen Advisory Group meeting. The time line of the project (2016 – 2022) was presented, as well as a road map to how this project will move forward. Three major alternatives, as well as a “no action” alternative were laid out. Since this is a Federal/State/Local project, public input is being ACTIVELY sought. You have a chance to contribute. So many times we say, “Why did they do this? Why did they do it this way? Why didn’t anyone ask us?” You are being asked. Residents, business people and government all have a say. If you have any questions about the process, or if you would like to attend a meeting, please email your interest or question or request to [email protected]. Eight people from Moonachie attended the March 23rd meeting, so there is always room for more.

BOROUGH EASTER EGG HUNT 2016 This year’s Easter Egg Hunt was a great success. It was held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 11am. The Borough Easter Egg Hunt was organized by Moonachie’s Celebrations Committee, headed by Kathy Kinsella, Tony Cirillo and Lucille Millar. The students enjoyed searching for eggs and then trading them in for great prizes. The Easter Bunny was there for fantastic picturetaking opportunities. Thank you to all who helped make this year a success.

2016 CURBSIDE GRASS COLLECTION BEGINS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6TH

Even though the Borough provides a weekly collection of grass from the residents, we BOROUGH strongly encourage back yard OF MOONACHIE composting or “cut it and leave GRASS it” as a preferred alternative. Grass will naturally decompose and provide food for new growth and healthier lawns if you cut it and leave it on the lawn. The new mulching mowers will chop the grass into smaller pieces, causing them to decompose quicker and to minimize the clumping that results from grass which has grown too long before being cut. Collecting your grass and composting it in a small bin or pile will provide you with fertilizer as it decomposes. It can also be used as ground cover to deter the growth of weeds in flowerbeds and gardens although it should not be used in gardens if the lawn has been treated with chemicals. For those residents who chose to put their cut grass out for collection, the Borough will pick-up grass, yard waste and tree trimmings every Wednesday, beginning April 6th through October 26th. Grass is not collected at the Recycling Depot any longer and must be placed at the curb in compostible paper bags for collection. Tree trimmings must be cut in 4 foot lengths and bundled not to exceed 50lbs. Tree trimmings are not to exceed 6 inches in diameter. Tree stumps, tree trunks and branches exceeding 6 inches will not be picked up in the curbside collection and must be disposed of by the resident.

Compostible paper bags can be purchased at the Municipal Building at a cost of 3 bags for $1.00. A maximum of 15 bags can be purchased at one time. The borough charges the same amount that it costs to purchase the bags from the manufacturer.

BOROUGH OF MOONACHIE BUILDING DEPARTMENT

- The Building Department of the Borough of Moonachie would like to bring to the attention of its residents that there are contractors approaching residents to resurface or extend their driveways.

DRIVEWAYS

Though the quote and price may seem to be good, the quality of workmanship, the material used and the end result may not be acceptable.

The Zoning Code of the Borough of Moonachie does regulate how much pavement can be put down on your property. A permit is required before the work can proceed, bring a copy of your survey to the Building Department. Should you have any questions as to construction or permit requirements before you sign or agree to any contract with any paving contractor, please contact the Building Department at 201-641-1857.

ABOVE GROUND AND IN GROUND POOLS - The Building

Department of the Borough of Moonachie would like to remind all residents of the Borough that above ground, as well as, in ground pools require State Construction Permits.

According to Michael Sartori, Construction Official for the Borough, state permits require inspections of pool structure, electric and plumbing work to insure that they are completed properly and safely.

Additional safety items such as the fencing or barriers, ladder protection, child resistant gates, and backflow preventers are also inspected according to Michael Sartori.

The Building Department of Moonachie may be contacted at 201-641-1857 for additional information on this or any other construction subject.

ILLEGAL APARTMENTS - The Building Department in conjunction with the Zoning Official of the Borough of Moonachie would like to inform the residents of Moonachie that the renting of illegal apartments is contrary to the Municipal Code of Moonachie 10-4. No illegal apartment may be rented and no occupancy may take place without application to the Zoning Official.

Failure to comply or establish an illegal apartment will subject the property owner to a $500 per day penalty.

Should you have any questions please contact the Zoning Official at 201-641-1857.

CLEAN WATER NJ Our storm water goes directly into our waterways via storm drains. We must all work together to keep our water clean and free from chemicals, animal waste, and petroleum products. Your everyday activities can affect water quality. Help reduce the amount of pollution that flows into our waterways by following the tips below. • Pick up after your pet. Properly dispose of pet waste into the trash or toilet. Animal waste contains coliform bacteria, which is harmful to our health and, when washed into swimming waters, can result in beach closings. • Carry a newspaper or plastic bag to pick up the waste when you walk your pet. Nuisance laws prohibit you from allowing your pet's waste to remain on private or public land. • When treating your pet and yard for fleas or ticks, check with your veterinarian for safe substitutes. Never dispose of flea dip liquid on the ground or in the storm drain. It should be disposed of as a household hazardous waste. Visit www.state.nj.us/dep/dshw/rrtp/hhwcps.htm for a list of county household hazardous waste disposal centers. • Do not feed wildlife such as geese, pigeons, ducks and deer. Feeding results in more pollution from their wastes.

PETS

Your everyday activities can affect water quality. Help reduce the amount of pollution that flows into our waterways by following the tips below. • Conserve water. Do not over water your lawn. Adjust sprinklers if water runs into the gutter. Water during cooler times of the day. • Identify pests before spraying pesticides. Ask a specialist at your garden center for advice on how to treat for that specific pest. Use integrated pest management (IPM) methods to minimize chemical use in your garden. Many IPM methods do not even require the use of chemical pesticides. • Reduce the amount of grass by planting ground cover. This reduces the need for fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. • Use natural pesticides such as milky spore and nematodes wherever possible. If you must use chemical pesticides, use them sparingly and in targeted areas. • Have your lawn tested at the county Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension office to determine if you need to fertilize. If so, use natural and slow-release nitrogen fertilizers and make sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions. Never apply to your lawn or garden if the weather calls for rain. • Use a mulching mower instead of bagging grass clippings to reduce lawn wastes and to reduce the need for fertilizer. Do not put loose leaves or grass clippings in the street. Use them in a compost pile as a source for enriched soil. If you do need to dispose of leaves or grass clippings, contact your municipality to determine the appropriate method to dispose these wastes. • If you must use herbicides, apply them directly to the weeds rather than broadcasting if possible. A healthy lawn will reduce weed growth. • Use mulch on flower beds and gardens to prevent weeds from growing and to help absorb water. • Use drought-resistant native plants in gardens and beds. These plants require less fertilizer and less water, thereby reducing the amount of potential polluted runoff.

IN THE GARDEN

Your everyday activities can affect water quality. Help reduce the amount of pollution that flows into our waterways by following the tips below. • Take your car to a service center to change oil or antifreeze. If you do change your own oil or antifreeze, do it in a garage, never on the street. Use a self-contained oil pan and discard the oil at a local service center for recycling. NEVER discard oil, gas or antifreeze into a stormwater drain. Antifreeze should be discarded at a household hazardous waste facility. Visit www.state.nj.us/dep/dshw/rrtp/hhwcps.htm for a list of local household hazardous waste facilities. • If you spill hazardous fluids, contain it immediately with rags or cat litter. Clean up the spill and properly dispose of the waste. • Check your car for leaks and schedule regular tune-ups. If you find leaks or drips, have your car repaired. • Store hazardous materials properly to prevent spills. Store them in the original closed container.

MEADOWLANDS YMCA 21ST CCLC Healthy Super Bowl Feast

21st Century Moonachie YMCA celebrated our first Healthy Super Bowl Feast for 2016. The students had to make a variety of healthy foods for their party. This demonstrated that they were able to create and enjoy wholesome foods. All of students were able to participate in this event and were grouped in different ages. Each group was accompanied by a counselor who assisted them. This showed the students that they can have fun while working in groups to accomplish their feast. There were various types of foods including a helmet carved out of a watermelon fruit bowl. They also prepared mini whole wheat bagels in which they added sauce, low fat cheese, and turkey pepperoni. Fresh soft whole wheat finger sandwiches with low sodium cold cuts accompanied by a fresh salad and crunchy whole grain baked nachos topped with delicious vegetables. They used crisp vegetables to make a vegetable platter in the shape of a football. One group made no bake healthy cereal bars with Cheerios and raisins. Sugar-free refreshments were food colored to their favorite team color, which enabled the children to drink something delicious and sugar-free. After preparing the food, everything was placed in a buffet style so everyone was able to enjoy the treats. Then they were able to take part in creative Super Bowl activities and dance to music.

ROBOTICS In its second competition ever, the Moonachie Robotics Team came in third place overall at the South Bergen Jointure Commission’s Vex IQ Bankshot Robot Competition. The competition took place at South Hackensack Memorial School on March 2, 2016. The competition was comprised of three rounds in which robots had to displace and move orange balls over a “net” or throw them into a container in 1 minute. The first two rounds involved team members controlling the robots, while the third round had robots running on automated programs created by each team. Moonachie was third in the two driver rounds and fourth in the automation round. However, the team was given the “Most Creative Design” award for having the most creative robot design. Though this was the last competition of the school year, the team will be back at it next year to build on their accomplishments!

HAVE FUN OUTDOORS – SAFELY! It's a beautiful day — the sun is shining, the birds are chirping. What could be more perfect than a bike ride? Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. The Bergen County Department of Health Services reminds all residents to wear a helmet while riding.

Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries. According to the Chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. It can save your life.

A head injury can mean brain injury. That's why it's so important to wear your bike helmet. Wearing one doesn't mean you can be reckless, but a helmet will provide some protection for your face, head, and brain in case you fall down. CPSC offers the following tips on how to correctly wear a helmet: • Wear the helmet flat atop your head, not tilted back at an angle. • Make sure the helmet fits snugly and does not obstruct your field of vision. • Make sure the chin strap fits securely and that the buckle stays fastened.

Since February 1999, all bike helmets manufactured or imported for sale in the United States have to meet the federal safety standard set by CPSC. This standard ensures that bike helmets will adequately protect the head and that chin straps will be strong enough to prevent the helmet from coming off in a crash, collision or fall. Helmets meeting the standard carry a label stating that they meet CPSC's safety standard. This will help eliminate confusion among consumers about which certification mark to look for when buying a helmet. A New Jersey law makes it mandatory to wear a bicycle helmet. Wearing one makes good sense! Protect yourself, friends and family members every time you ride. Make sure everyone has a helmet that meets standards and is wearing it properly.
