Become a Champion in the Race to Save More Lives The starting gun explodes and the relay race begins! The athletes accelerate from their starting blocks, taking advantage of their preparation and training to give their team the best chance to succeed. Cardiac resuscitation is not so different from a team event like this. Our race starts when someone's heart suddenly stops. Our team includes the bystander who calls 911 and starts CPR with the assistance of dispatchers, the first responders who provide early defibrillation, paramedics who incorporate advanced care and hospital nurses and doctors who continue with innovative techniques like hypothermia. The team also includes educators, program coordinators, survivor advocates, leaders, researchers who coach and mentor those on the frontline, the media, survivors and families. To be successful in consistently winning-saving lives-our team has to work together, coordinating their effort on the scene, and behind the scenes. ECCU 2012 is potentially the largest cardiac arrest survivor gathering in the nation. It is unique as a conference in representing every member of the resuscitation team. This year we're especially proud to have Dr. Dot Richardson, the beloved Olympic Gold Medal Champion who hit the home run to bring the U.S. softball team first place in the Atlanta Olympics. A gifted and inspiring leader, she'll tell her story of overcoming challenges to pursue excellence, both as an Olympian and now as an orthopedic surgeon in charge of the renowned National Training Center. Become a champion in our race to save more lives! Please join the team at ECCU 2012 in Orlando this September!-Tom Aufderheide, MD, President, Citizen CPR Foundation

TCC Tidbits TRAINING CENTER COORDINATORS: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SHARE THE INFORMATION IN THE ECC BEAT WITH YOUR INSTRUCTORS! REMINDER: Heartsaver Optional Written Exams & Certificates AHA does not require the successful completion of a written exam for its Heartsaver level courses. However, we created optional written Heartsaver exams to meet the needs of students whose employers require that they take and successfully complete an exam. Optional exams are available BY REQUEST to AHA TCCs. To request these optional exams, please contact [email protected]. TCCs/Instructors who administer an optional exam should indicate this on the student's course completion card by NOT marking through the "Optional Written Test" bubble. Also to show successful completion of an optional Heartsaver exam, certificates of completion are located on the AHA Instructor Network. They are available only to TCCs through their access to the site and can be located in the Training Centers>TCC Tools section. TCCs should print the corresponding course exam certificate and provide it to Heartsaver students who successfully complete an optional Heartsaver exam. PLEASE NOTE: Since written exams are not typically administered in Heartsaver courses, students who need to take an exam must indicate that to their Instructor. BLS and Heartsaver Instructors who receive these student requests must obtain the optional exams from their TCC.

REMINDER: ACLS & PALS Precourse Self-Assessments The ACLS and PALS Precourse Self-Assessments are considered copyrighted property of the American Heart Association. Any Training Center that wishes to provide these self-assessments through their internal, secure LMS servers must first obtain copyright permission. Copyright permission must also be obtained if TCs wish to use the precourse self-assessments for any use other than then the intended. Copyright permission can be requested using the form at this link: http://copyright.heart.org/. ALERT: AHA Courses/Quality Survey In an effort to continuously improve AHA training materials, courses and course delivery, AHA recently launched a survey focused on gaining insight from AHA TCCs, Instructors and students on the 2010 Guidelines-updated courses and materials. This survey also includes a section on the quality of course delivery. PLEASE NOTE: This survey is NOT a substitute for AHA course evaluations. If you receive questions about this survey, please assure your customers that this is an official AHA survey and encourage them to participate. We'll be gathering student feedback from now through September 2012. Thank you in advance for your participation and input. REMINDER: Changes to Heartsaver Skills Evaluator Program As of February 1, 2012, BLS Training Centers no longer need AHA National Center approval to have Heartsaver Skills Evaluators; any AHA BLS TC may have this role aligned with their TC. Please note the following regarding Heartsaver Skills Evaluator cards and materials: Paperwork for Heartsaver Skills Evaluator courses is now processed through the Training Center that conducts the courses; all paperwork for Heartsaver Skills Evaluator courses should be submitted to the TC, not to AHA National Center. Heartsaver Skills Evaluator cards are available through the AHA's Distributors and should be ordered following the same process as for all other course completion cards. All materials needed to conduct Heartsaver Skills Evaluator courses are now available to TCCs through their access to the AHA Instructor Network. These materials are located at the "Training Centers" tab, under "Skills Evaluator Info."
